Summary

The end is coming。

Logen Ninefingers might only have one more fight in him - but it's going to be a big one。 Battle rages across the North, the King of the Northmen still stands firm, and there's only one man who can stop him。 His oldest friend, and his oldest enemy。 It's past time for the Bloody-Nine to come home。

With too many masters and too little time, Superior Glokta is fighting a different kind of war。 A secret struggle in which no-one is safe, and no-one can be trusted。 His days with a sword are far behind him。 It's a good thing blackmail, threats and torture still work well enough。

Jezal dan Luthar has decided that winning glory is far too painful, and turned his back on soldiering for a simple life with the woman he loves。 But love can be painful too, and glory has a nasty habit of creeping up on a man when he least expects it。

While the King of the Union lies on his deathbead, the peasants revolt and the nobles scramble to steal his crown。 No-one believes that the shadow of war is falling across the very heart of the Union。 The First of the Magi has a plan to save the world, as he always does。 But there are risks。 There is no risk more terrible, after all, than to break the First Law。。。

Jus't not it for me。 The story itself was ok, the pace to slow。 I had to force myself to finish the book。 Unfortunately for me I didn't like the ending of the triology。 Jus't not it for me。 The story itself was ok, the pace to slow。 I had to force myself to finish the book。 Unfortunately for me I didn't like the ending of the triology。 。。。more

The big finish! A few surprises。 Taking fantasy tropes and flipping them。 Say one thing about Joe Abercrombie the man can write!

This was a great trilogy。 It took a bit to get into it and understand they different points of view。 There are a lot of characters to keep up with but the audiobook made it much easier。 I felt like the whole series was like a long Guy Richie movie。 I’m looking forward to reading more to see how they compare。 I laughed out loud and cheered and at times felt sad for them all。 Plus there were plenty of surprises to keep me interested to the end。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The tortured torturer villain protagonist manages to get the girl in the end, but nothing ends up too happily for anyone。 I was really hoping that Glokta would somehow discover that truth actually matters -- in the sense that torturing someone to say what you want them to say has consequences when what you wanted them to say isn't actually true -- but he didn't so much。 I wanted Severard's true confession to be only that he'd told Ferro who had sent him after her and the rest to be complete B。S。 The tortured torturer villain protagonist manages to get the girl in the end, but nothing ends up too happily for anyone。 I was really hoping that Glokta would somehow discover that truth actually matters -- in the sense that torturing someone to say what you want them to say has consequences when what you wanted them to say isn't actually true -- but he didn't so much。 I wanted Severard's true confession to be only that he'd told Ferro who had sent him after her and the rest to be complete B。S。 in an attempt to not be disfigured。 Then Glokta would feel some remorse (and peril) discovering that Frost was his real betrayer。Well written, but I wish things turned out a little less pessimistic。 。。。more

You'll forgive me if I say that this is a hard book to finish as I feel the last 10% of the book is dragging the story on and on without a real need for it。 That really takes the wind out of my sails with it, I was forcing myself to get through after Adua "survived" and the truth was fully revealed (well all we know as of right now)。 As with the previous entries in the First Law trilogy, nothing's easy for the heroes of this story, Logen faces a massive challenge of defeating his greatest enemy You'll forgive me if I say that this is a hard book to finish as I feel the last 10% of the book is dragging the story on and on without a real need for it。 That really takes the wind out of my sails with it, I was forcing myself to get through after Adua "survived" and the truth was fully revealed (well all we know as of right now)。 As with the previous entries in the First Law trilogy, nothing's easy for the heroes of this story, Logen faces a massive challenge of defeating his greatest enemy - (view spoiler)[ manages it and then some while Jezal is made king! (personally I like his development in this book, his self loathing forces him to be a type of legendary king even if he thinks he's terrible) (hide spoiler)] and a heck of a lot of other stuff goes on too。But like I said at the start, this felt like Abercrombie was stuffing the book full, from the confrontation in the North to the battle in Adua, they don't feel at all connected and are very separated narratively speaking, so much so that I felt after the events at Carleon, it felt rushed and overstuffed。Then of course there's the typical fare of the Grimdark world, "you are NOT going to get a happy ending and you're going to like it you dirty asshole, back to the mud with you!" because yeah, the only one who seems to come out of this smiling is Beyaz and do I have to say I hate this guy now? Because yeah, I sort of loathe this man with everything in me。The other problem is the lack of answers, we don't know much on magic, the other side, the seed, the Bloody Nine himself, little is explained and little is given。 I know there's further books in this world but。。。yeah I think I'm sort of done。 I'm silently of the opinion that Abercrombie didn't have a serious map out for things in this, the useless journey of the heroes in book 2 was a warning for me and the way this ended, it feels sort of spiteful really for all concerned。And no, it's got nothing to do with the violence or the graphic nature of things, I like that, it's what kept me coming back when I had to put it down for a while。 It just feels like it's being spiteful on purpose if you get me。 。。。more

I don't really have a lot to say about this series。 Abercrombie has become one of the faces of modern fantasy and earned plaudits for his realistic characterisation and subversive plotting, but I found these books pretty underwhelming。 Surprisingly it was actually the setting and lore that interested me the most, and unfortunately the mystique surrounding Kanedias and Bayaz wasn't touched upon enough for my liking。 The gritty, low-fantasy approach informs the author's writing to a fault, for bet I don't really have a lot to say about this series。 Abercrombie has become one of the faces of modern fantasy and earned plaudits for his realistic characterisation and subversive plotting, but I found these books pretty underwhelming。 Surprisingly it was actually the setting and lore that interested me the most, and unfortunately the mystique surrounding Kanedias and Bayaz wasn't touched upon enough for my liking。 The gritty, low-fantasy approach informs the author's writing to a fault, for better or worse。The characterisation is lauded by fantasy readers, and in some ways I can understand why。 There's a lot of snappy, grounded dialogue that suits the setting and a couple of characters (Bayaz, Glokta) have some depth and nuance to them。 I also quite liked the decision to go down the 'nobody is capable of change' route, at least for the most part。 Otherwise, I found many of them shallow and repetitive, and increasingly acting as the plot required them to as the story advanced。 Ferro is a rage monster, Jezal is an arrogant jackass, 'nobles bad', etc。 Logen starts out as a nice change of pace but the Sun-Tzu barbarian act grows tiresome very quickly, to say nothing of the deus-ex machina rubbish associated with him。The writing style was okay。 The author has a talent for dialogue and can keep his narrative voices relatively distinct, but has major issues with clunky description (particularly adjective addiction) that felt more like obligatory chunks to break up dialogue than something to add colour to the scenes。 The action setpieces are a bit better, albeit veering between bland and overwritten。The strongest part of this book is the ending - grappling with the unhappiness that comes with the cyclical nature of humanity was a good choice, and in keeping with the bleak tone of the series。 This book is definitely the best of the trilogy and was rescued somewhat by the ending, but on the whole the writing fell flat for me and I suspect Abercrombie's ceiling isn't a high one。 Perhaps it was the widespread acclaim or the comparisons to Glen Cook and Robert E。 Howard inflating expectations, but I was disappointed and won't be revisiting the author going forward。 。。。more

Fitting conclusion to the trilogy。 I did not like some turns, but that is because I'm trying to look for the good in people。。。Abercrombie created a dark grey, bleak world, where even the ones you root for are bastards if you think about it。 I'm not all that happy about the ending, but it is still very good。 Abercrombie's characters are the strongest point in this series。 I won't be continuing with the world immediately, but I look forward to further adventures in this world。 I have to work throu Fitting conclusion to the trilogy。 I did not like some turns, but that is because I'm trying to look for the good in people。。。Abercrombie created a dark grey, bleak world, where even the ones you root for are bastards if you think about it。 I'm not all that happy about the ending, but it is still very good。 Abercrombie's characters are the strongest point in this series。 I won't be continuing with the world immediately, but I look forward to further adventures in this world。 I have to work through a couple of things in my mind first。 You have to be realistic about things, say one thing about Joe Abercrombie, say he makes you love and hate the characters he crafted。 。。。more

The finale to an amazing trilogy。 Abercrombie had this well planned out, so many twists and turns coming to a nice conclusion。 So many of Abercrombie's story decisions surprised me, but the end of this book throws in so many revelations of the entire series。This does end in a way in which the stories of some characters can go on, some coming full circle。 I am interested in continuing on the next series in this world。This has to be my favorite fantasy series。 I can't say enough。 The characters, a The finale to an amazing trilogy。 Abercrombie had this well planned out, so many twists and turns coming to a nice conclusion。 So many of Abercrombie's story decisions surprised me, but the end of this book throws in so many revelations of the entire series。This does end in a way in which the stories of some characters can go on, some coming full circle。 I am interested in continuing on the next series in this world。This has to be my favorite fantasy series。 I can't say enough。 The characters, action and overall story and continuity of the series was so expertly done。 I can't recommend this enough。 。。。more

Story is over, well kind of。 I'm glad that Abercrombie managed to bring almost all lines to conclusion。 There are still some things open, but that's what it makes more believable。 It's not fairy tale with happy ending。 It part of a history of one nation, with some people sacrificing all, and some living from their misery。 Somebody falls, somebody rise。 And everybody has some darkness in himself。 And that's what makes this series great。Although it seemed almost impossible, at the end everything f Story is over, well kind of。 I'm glad that Abercrombie managed to bring almost all lines to conclusion。 There are still some things open, but that's what it makes more believable。 It's not fairy tale with happy ending。 It part of a history of one nation, with some people sacrificing all, and some living from their misery。 Somebody falls, somebody rise。 And everybody has some darkness in himself。 And that's what makes this series great。Although it seemed almost impossible, at the end everything fallen to its places。 Many lines that started in first book were explained。 Without haste but also without unnecessary prolonging。 Pace is just right, to keep you hooked and making you turn every page with expectation。 。。。more

I’m still struggling to know what I thought of the book – I’m not sure I didn’t like it, but I’m not sure I liked it either…? The battle scenes remained gripping and the lack of definitive heroes or villains (as one might find in epic/heroic fantasy) is successfully done, yet there was something almost defiant in how the author steadfastly determinedly clung to the book being grimdark。
