On se trouve face à un petit couple dont on sait par avance qu’ils vont terminer ensemble mais qui vont devoir passer quelques difficultés pour y parvenir。 Absolument rien d’insurmontable， il s’agit tout simplement pour Shun de réussir à passer outre le fait qu’il se soit senti abandonné par Mio quand celui-ci a quitté l’île trois ans plus tôt en ne lui donnant aucune nouvelle alors qu’il le lui avait promis。Tous les deux ont un passé plutôt chargé， l’un a perdu ses parents， l’autre a abandonné On se trouve face à un petit couple dont on sait par avance qu’ils vont terminer ensemble mais qui vont devoir passer quelques difficultés pour y parvenir。 Absolument rien d’insurmontable， il s’agit tout simplement pour Shun de réussir à passer outre le fait qu’il se soit senti abandonné par Mio quand celui-ci a quitté l’île trois ans plus tôt en ne lui donnant aucune nouvelle alors qu’il le lui avait promis。Tous les deux ont un passé plutôt chargé， l’un a perdu ses parents， l’autre a abandonné sa fiancée le jour de leur cérémonie en avouant à toute sa famille qu’il est gay。Si il est évident que tout finira bien et que le seul suspense qui existe réside dans le temps que Shun va mettre pour réussir à pardonner à Mio， c’est dans l’ouverture aux autres et l’acceptation d’eux-mêmes que ce manga réussit à tirer son épingle du jeu。J’ai aimé ce côté un peu tranquille et très bienveillant。 Il est d’ailleurs à noter que l’ex-fiancée fait une apparition remarquée et remarquable sans être un personnage complètement lourdingue， qu’un couple de lesbiennes habite à proximité de l’auberge qui loge nos deux amoureux et que， contrairement à beaucoup de yaoi， la notion de consentement n’est pas piétinée à tout bout de champ。 Si Mio parait un peu vif et insistant， rien ne se passe avant que Shun ne l’ait vraiment décidé。Le style graphique est joli， les deux personnages sont vraiment bien caractérisés mais， plus que tout， c’est l’impression de lire une histoire un peu hors du temps qui m’a plu。 Cette petite île semble être ailleurs， dans une bulle complètement à part et où les personnages peuvent se trouver eux-mêmes et être enfin qui ils veulent。J’ai aimé cette sensation de liberté et d’enfin pouvoir souffler et vraiment， ça m’a donné une folle envie de partir là bas， juste pour y fermer les yeux et se reposer。 。。。more

2’5No lo he odiado ni nada。 De hecho había leído la precuela antes de este tomo autoconclusivo porque desconocía su existencia y me habían gustado mucho。 Sin embargo， siento que al ser eso， solo 1 tomo， la autora no ha tenido tiempo de desarrollar bien la historia ni los personajes。 Algunas escenas han quedado un poco precipitadas y sin trasfondo。El dibujo es precioso🤩 y aún así creo que releeré los tres tomos posteriores para refrescar y porque este me ha sabido a poco （y a poca cosa también 🤭）

Simply putting: This is without a doubt the most adorable and clearest art I have ever seen in a Manga series so far。 And the characters are so freaking adorable！！！ But apparently the plot is nothing special and moves quite fast and there were a few things I found very weird about it too。。。 But great for time-pass！

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it， click here。 With lush art and tender storyline， Kanna Kii’s graphic novel “The Stranger by the Beach” pulls readers in like the waves of Okinawa Beach as the story follows Shin Hashimoto， an aspiring open gay novelist reuniting with his childhood lover Mio Chibana。 Kii beautifully illustrated every single panel， and her attention to detail is noted from the backgrounds of Shin’s grandmothers restaurant to the emotions carved in the faces of our characters。 She utilizes the effects of “color” and lighting to With lush art and tender storyline， Kanna Kii’s graphic novel “The Stranger by the Beach” pulls readers in like the waves of Okinawa Beach as the story follows Shin Hashimoto， an aspiring open gay novelist reuniting with his childhood lover Mio Chibana。 Kii beautifully illustrated every single panel， and her attention to detail is noted from the backgrounds of Shin’s grandmothers restaurant to the emotions carved in the faces of our characters。 She utilizes the effects of “color” and lighting to her advantage， her skill very much noted when the two characters reunited; from that scene， readers could quickly sense a suddenly change in the atmosphere， simply by looking at the physical and emotional portrayal of themselves。 Mio seems to have grown into his own person， no long drowning in his dark stiff school uniform; he wears looser lighter clothes， his hair has grown out， his eyes have much more light captured within them， displaying that along the way he’s been able to settle and find peace in his own identity。 Shin， on the other hand， with his hunched posture， furrowed forehead， messy hair and messier rumpled clothing， seems exhausted。 His physical appearance replicates the emotional turmoil he’s gone through as an open gay man， simply tired by the whispering and laughing of what’s being said behind his back。 Yet despite all this， the wind blows and the sun peeks beneath the grey clouds as the two turn face-to-face once again; a nod to the eventual peace they will both find， no matter how cold the air from the mountains above blows。I also would like to highlight how Kii has perfectly sculpted Mio Chibana and Shin Hashimoto in representation the struggles of figuring out ones identity on their own。 Shin in particular was someone I was able to resonate with（yes an not just for the “gay writer part”😐）。 His first experience with judgmental behavior occurs when he overhears his first love regard his sexuality with distaste， disgusted as he [the crush] cries， “I sit next to him！” （Kii） From there on out， and especially after his first conversation with Mio， he keeps himself guarded， shielding himself from the derogatory states of his family， ex-girlfriend， and his own internal thoughts by hiding in the island of Okinawa。 Shin is a accurate portrayal of many young adults and children who， as they grown， become embarrassed and ashamed to highlight a key part of their identity， whether it may be their cultural background， gender， or sexual orientation。 This in particular is why I got mad upon seeing that people judged Mio for wearing two condoms during the last few chapters of the story。 For years， both men have gone through very different life experiences; that one moment of intimacy they were able to share just shows how much they need to learn about how to love each other。 Because for Shin AND Mio， who’ve experienced relationships with women， they simply cannot just say “it’s not that different because it’s just someone of the opposite sex”。 What they have is years of adoration， sweet gestures of leftover food and flower gifts， lessons in safe sex and communication practice and many more years of judgment and fear to undo。 But while these obstacles stretch， and the future of them is still unknown， they have each other， and for them， the presence of one another is enough for them to call each other “home” As the moon rises over the quiet stretch of Huntington Beach， and as the crowds of the pier calm， Kii’s “The Stranger by the Beach” is an alluring tale of how home can be found anywhere with anyone， even on the lonely bench by the single streetlight of Okinawa Beach。 。。。more

I also read part of its ongoing sequel and I must say， I find this manga quite biphobic lol。 There are things it does well， like dealing with homophobia and internalised homophobia and I didn’t mind its portrayal of sex， but holy crap the way Mio’s sexuality was portrayed was kind of disturbing 😅 not sure if this gets better and the issue is addressed but yeah， I did find some of it quite biphobic。
