Summary

Rhythm of War is the eagerly awaited sequel to Brandon Sanderson's #1 New York Times bestselling Oathbringer , from an epic fantasy writer at the top of his game。

After forming a coalition of human resistance against the enemy invasion, Dalinar Kholin and his Knights Radiant have spent a year fighting a protracted, brutal war。 Neither side has gained an advantage。

Now, as new technological discoveries begin to change the face of the war, the enemy prepares a bold and dangerous operation。 The arms race that follows will challenge the very core of the Radiant ideals, and potentially reveal the secrets of the ancient tower that was once the heart of their strength。

Another fantastic instalment! This one explores a lot of elements of mental health which I found to be a really interesting and great inclusion。 Seeing the struggles the characters face is really humanising and they add to the story as well。 The story itself has a really good build up and stays true to the 'difficult to predict' theme of all Sanderson's work so far。 Loved it! Brandon Sanderson continues to impress。 I was a little disappointed by the first 400 pages, but with a Sanderson book it pays to be patient。 The last 800 made up for it。 Yes, I'm making the point that the book is huge, but the Stormlight Archive carries a lot of technical baggage with it。 The characters continue to develop in a satisfactory manner and the onion-like central plot continues to shed layers。 I'm not going to put any spoilers in this review, but we do learn more about the nature of t Brandon Sanderson continues to impress。 I was a little disappointed by the first 400 pages, but with a Sanderson book it pays to be patient。 The last 800 made up for it。 Yes, I'm making the point that the book is huge, but the Stormlight Archive carries a lot of technical baggage with it。 The characters continue to develop in a satisfactory manner and the onion-like central plot continues to shed layers。 I'm not going to put any spoilers in this review, but we do learn more about the nature of the Radiants, the Fused, the gods and hints at what really happened in the Recreance。 He also sets up the sequel in the last few chapters。 I'd like to have seen more of Renarin in this one - it mostly focused on Kaladin, Dalinar, Shallan and Navani on the human side and Lirin, Raboniel, and Rlain on the Singer/Listener side。 Lots of flashbacks, which I don't usually like because they drag you away from the narrative line, but they do fill in some important details。Overall an excellent book。 I look forward to the next, massive, installment。 I just hope he finishes the tale。 I'm still waiting for Martin and Rothfus to get their acts together。 。。。more

Sanderson has upped his already considerable game with his latest installment of Stormlight Archive。 The story is relentless。 Feelings perfectly melded with action。 People don't go necessarily where you want, but where they're meant to be。 Massive cosmere for the deep fans。You also get credit for Physics 101 (or is it more Chem?) We shall call this review MIXED FEELINGS。I admit it。 I'm a Brandon Sanderson fan。 And I love this series and its characters。 In November, in preparation for this book's release, I read DETAILED plot summaries of books 1 and 2, and then I reread book 3, which is over 1000 pages long。And then, in November, this book came out, and I slogged through the first 200 or so pages (reading it on a Kindle, so the pages are approximate)。 All the characters were in ruts, I guessed what I thought would be one We shall call this review MIXED FEELINGS。I admit it。 I'm a Brandon Sanderson fan。 And I love this series and its characters。 In November, in preparation for this book's release, I read DETAILED plot summaries of books 1 and 2, and then I reread book 3, which is over 1000 pages long。And then, in November, this book came out, and I slogged through the first 200 or so pages (reading it on a Kindle, so the pages are approximate)。 All the characters were in ruts, I guessed what I thought would be one of the biggest plot twists of the book, and I had never loved Venli, who is one of the key viewpoints for the book。 The big kicker for me, though, was that we were 200 pages in and there had been NO INCITING INCIDENT。 And I just kind of lost interest, and set the book aside, planning to pick it up again soon。Then passed December, January, February, March, April, May。。。it was the beginning of June when I decided to give the book another chance。 And it turns out the inciting was in THE VERY NEXT CHAPTER。 If only I had read one more chapter。As soon as I hit the inciting incident, I was hooked。 I was invested in the story, in all of the characters (especially Venli), and I just had to find out what would happen。 I read 100 pages a day for 2 days, and then on the 3rd day I read 800 pages and finished the book。 And it was brilliant and beautiful and I'm so glad I read it。 (I did correctly guess the key plot twist。。。) But still。。。I wish I had been more invested those first 200 pages。 。。。more

DNF- This makes me sad, I just can’t get through it。 It just seems like rambling and I can’t connect。 I loved the first book and I had so much hope for the series, something switched and it all went downhill from there。 All the characters I loved I couldn’t get back into reading about。

4。5 starsHow do you even review a book that is 1,200+ pages long?! Stormlight Archive was my favorite series after the first 3 books - it was incredible。I'm 40% through book 4 and I dislike it。。。I'm not sure if Brandon is going through some stuff, and I genuinely do hope that this book can help people struggling with depression, but for me this arc has ruined it。 Instead of being able to go into the fantasy world and escape the drudgeries of life, I now have to read about a depressed former hero and his mental struggles。 It's not why I read this series and it h Stormlight Archive was my favorite series after the first 3 books - it was incredible。I'm 40% through book 4 and I dislike it。。。I'm not sure if Brandon is going through some stuff, and I genuinely do hope that this book can help people struggling with depression, but for me this arc has ruined it。 Instead of being able to go into the fantasy world and escape the drudgeries of life, I now have to read about a depressed former hero and his mental struggles。 It's not why I read this series and it has made the last few hundred pages a real slog。 Kadin was such a good character and is now quite unlikeable。。。 It's a real shame。 。。。more

Giving this five stars for the last 200 pages。 At times this was a total slog, and more than once during pages 400-900 I found myself thinking this book should be 600 pages, not 1200。 But then the final 200 pages entered the scene and I was crying (?), and somehow it all made sense and rendered the previous 1,000 pages worth it。 Mental health struggles were a very intentional thread throughout the story, and as I finished the last page it's clear that care shone through。 I loved the unlikely bed Giving this five stars for the last 200 pages。 At times this was a total slog, and more than once during pages 400-900 I found myself thinking this book should be 600 pages, not 1200。 But then the final 200 pages entered the scene and I was crying (?), and somehow it all made sense and rendered the previous 1,000 pages worth it。 Mental health struggles were a very intentional thread throughout the story, and as I finished the last page it's clear that care shone through。 I loved the unlikely bedfellows doing (LOTS OF) science experiments, our main man Kaladin getting in touch with his feelings, and of course Shallan (always Shallan)。 As an aside that I feel would be appreciated by this community and perhaps this community alone - I was driving with this (and only this H/T Rose DeWitt Bukater) in my backpack on the passenger's seat of my car and the passenger's side seat belt warning went off。 Because。。。my car thought this book was a person。 That's how much of a CHONKSTER this one is。 But again, worth it。 。。。more

Good read。 Easily five star, if not for the repetitive internal mumbling of an otherwise interesting character。 Here's to the hope that Sanderson doesn't pull a George RR Martin and dies before finishing Stormlight Archive。 Good read。 Easily five star, if not for the repetitive internal mumbling of an otherwise interesting character。 Here's to the hope that Sanderson doesn't pull a George RR Martin and dies before finishing Stormlight Archive。 。。。more

I just finished minutes ago and am struggling to wrap my mind around things。 Unpopular opinion but I think this COULD be my favorite of the Stromlight Archive。 All of the ties into the greater Cosmere are so fascinating。 My only problem。。。 waiting for the next one。

Best yetAmazing installation to the stormlight series。 Best book I’ve read in a while。 Highly recommend reading this series from the beginning。

This took me way to long to get through。 For such a long book it felt like not much happened。 While I love the characters and world this book was a bit of a drag。 Enjoyable, but this took effort to get through。

This had to be the most bloated book I’ve ever read。 It meandered for so long that the only logical explanation was that the climax/payoff would be epic beyond compare。 It wasn’t! It fizzled with epic proportions at the end! Very disappointed in this one。 I even took a break to read a couple other genres before starting it just in case the length of the previous entries had left any fatigue of the characters and story telling style。 It didn’t matter。 I’m just happy it’s over。

I read this monster in a week。 It was incredible。As with the other books in this series, it was slow to start for me。 And something about Shallon's early chapters really aggravated me。But in over 1200 pages, those were my only two gripes。 Because those slow to start chapters are always worth it in the end when everything explodes into a wonderful conclusion of perfectly timed twists and satisfying teary-eyed revelations。Again, Kaladin is a precious, broody cinnamon roll。 And he must be protected I read this monster in a week。 It was incredible。As with the other books in this series, it was slow to start for me。 And something about Shallon's early chapters really aggravated me。But in over 1200 pages, those were my only two gripes。 Because those slow to start chapters are always worth it in the end when everything explodes into a wonderful conclusion of perfectly timed twists and satisfying teary-eyed revelations。Again, Kaladin is a precious, broody cinnamon roll。 And he must be protected at all costs。 Seriously though, I cried during 4 separate Kaladin chapters。 I don't know how Sanderson did it, but no one can convince me Kal's not real。 The focus on mental illness in this book really spoke to me。 I felt it was a realistic portrayal of depression and makes Kaladin a flawed and relatable hero。I also loved Adolin and Maya's storyline here。 So perfect。I'm not sure how I'm going to wait years for the next book。 。。。more

Wow。I always forget how much Kaladin is my favorite character in any book ever。 I just finished this behemoth and have too many thoughts to properly review it but I believe this series will long be considered the pinnacle Fantasy Series of our generation。

Epic。 If you love the way cylons and humans grow to love each other, you’ll love Stormlight book 4。 My one critique is that Adolin/Shallan’s story was not wrapped up properly。

This is probably my least favorite of The Stormlight Archive so far。 I still appreciate the story and the characters。 The audiobook is well read as usual。 The problem is the story having to get worse before it gets better。 The exploration of mental illness was interesting, but difficult and not very enjoyable to read。

Do we know? Is this different than the。。。 Heralds giving up their blades/deciding to just leave the one Herald Tenelat alone being tortured by himself for thousands of years? The specifics of the entire Oathpact in general also completely confuse me。 What was the deal? Heralds fight [who- the Fused?] on Earth。。。 when they get killed they and the Fused go to some other planet and get tortured- by who, for how long? Until they。。。 what。 Decide to call it quits and then all go back to Earth [both them and fused?] and repeat the process?) Shallan is still tripping and everyone knows and is fine with it。 She has multiple personalities and they just take turns coming out and doing stuff。 She knows there is a spy within their group because someone keeps using her communication cube to talk to Mraize (a guy who is part of some interplanetary Ghostbloods organization whose goals are who knows what。) At some point she thinks it's her own spren Pattern who's been spying on her her entire life。 But then she remembers her traumatic memory (something she's been fighting her memory of the entire book) that before him she had some other spren and killed it (Confusion: How? When? Why did she have a spren bonding her when she was a toddler? Like all you have to do is say "I hate you" to your Spren and that breaks your oaths and turns them into a deadeye? How can a toddler swear oaths anyway or have honorable intentions。 What is seriously happening。) In Shadesmar when they get to the Honorspren fortress things look bad for Adolins case。 He asks to have a trial becuase he thinks it's not fair spren are punishing the current humans for the mistakes of the humans in the past。 The trial is looking like a sham , but at the last moment, his deadeye/shardblade Maya that they put on trial shocks everyone and actually speaks and says humans didn't abandon their oaths, the spren chose to。。。 become dead somehow。 (Confusion: what is going on- how did they become Deadeye? Why can she talk。 ) Shallan was also tasked to basically kill their judge, who is another Herald, but decides not to and merges with one of her personalities, Veil , leaving only 2 left in there which is better than 3。 When the book ends they are still down there in Shadesmar but some honorspren are ready to go bond humans now。 Another plot is the listener Venli and her (fused?) leader Leshwi and their (even bigger bad Fused Leader?) Raboneil。 (Confusion: WHAT is going on with these different types of Parshendi type species and who is who? Are singers and listeners the same? How are these different from Fused。 From my memory there were parshmen slaves and parshendi。。。 then Venli basically was given some evil spren which bonded to them to form StormForm, and then during the Everstorm this happened to everyone of their species and they all bonded with like evil Odium spren forming 。。。 what。 Listeners? Singers? Except for some of them get their minds over-written by ancient beings and get more powers and are called Fused? I am so conFused。 Ok so in Venli's case, she actually also bonded a good spren which keeps her Odium spren locked up, so she's actually Radiant, and that is how she can think 'against' Odium's influence and kindof do her own thing。 But what about everyone else who is siding with her on her rebellion thing - why are they able to resist Odium, don't they all have Odium spren? Such as Leshwi, and all the little parshendi-species people she in the end escapes with。。。) K whatever。 Venli is secretly radiant, (she can like- move ground/stone) she's with the Fused who have a secret plot to take over Urithiru which completely works。 The place is in lockdown, all of the Radiants living in there are knocked unconscious。 She secretly wants to just leave everything and basically run away and quit this war and is not a fan of Odium at all。 In the end, after being good and 'turning sides' and helping the Radiants take back Urithiru- she leaves and finds some of her old listerner people who escaped before all this corruption hiding in the Plains。 Kaladin's story- Kaladin has major PTSD and depression。 He is told he must resign basically because he keeps freezing up in battle/getting shell shocked。 Adolin makes him go out with friends even though he doesn't want to and he feels better。 He meets other soldiers with PTSD/depression and basically starts a therapy program where they all talk to each other and get fresh air, and it seems to be working。 Then, Urithiru gets taken over by the bad guys (Fused/Listeners/Possessed Parshendi。) He goes into hiding and has Teft with him, unconscious。 He's the only one -not- unconscious, but his powers are significantly weakened because they have like, poisoned the tower/the way stormlight works with something called Voidlight。 Luckily Lift also isn't affected by the tower corruption, but she does get taken prisoner for a while (until Venli breaks her out。) Kaladin basically gets sent out to single handedly fight and try to help this tower every time the bad guys (mainly Raboniel, this powerful old Fused chick) find a gem/Node and start corrupting it with Voidlight。 There's also this fused 'The Pursuer' who is really violent and mean obsessed with killing Kaladin (because Kaladin killed him once on a battle。。。 they get re-born, though。) He gets very injured but luckly Lift heals him - and Teft, and they make a plan to try and wake all the sleeping radiants and escape。 During the plan: Kaladin fights the Pursuer, and wins, and humiliates him。 However Teft is killed by Moash (their prev。 bridge 4 friend turned Evil)。 I cried and cried and cried when Teft died。 Kaladin is in complete despair。 They throw his dad off the tower and he jumps after。。。。 on the way down he is sent a vision? From Dalinar? Or Heaven? it's during a Highstorm) of his brother Tien who lets him know the whole point of life is to enjoy the time with the ones we have, even though you can't save everyone and everyone dies eventually。 He is heartened and reaches the 4th ideal and becomes stronger than ever- and goes back and helps liberate Urithiru。 Navani's story: Most people leave Urithiru to go fight in the war。 She stays back - but while she does they're taken over by those Fused/Listeners。 The leader Raboniel shares similar interests in research to her and lets her have a lab, and they research together。 They find out all sorts of things like mixing types of light, and 'eliminating' types of light。 This whole time she's secretly talking to the tower/spren (the Sibling) through a channel in the wall and trying to help her not get destroyed by the voidlight corruption from Raboniel。 At the very end they have found all of the towers nodes and are going to kill the tower/the Sibling。 Navani stabs Raboniel and is about to die (stabbed from Moash) and convinces the tower spren she IS worthy of bonding。 She speaks the words and becomes a Bondsmith radiant with the tower and is able to take back control and kick out everyone else。 She kindof mercy-kills Raboniel who wasn't quite dead and they have a moment。 It's apparent Raboniel wasn't necessarily too hyped up on Odium's plan either and wants the war to end one way or other even if her side loses (Confusion: HOW is this possible, aren't the Fused owned by Odium/don't they have his evil spren- like how is she able to have her own thoughts and plans such as 'I wish we didn't have war with humans' against Odiums will?)Dalinar's story: Dalinar and his armies and Jasna (and Szeth and Taravangian) go off to fight and take over more countries。 He decides he really needs to learn his bondsmith powers。 They go find another Herald who was a bondsmith but he's too crazy af。 He tries to steal Dalinar's spren bond with Stormfather but Szeth cuts the bond with his evil sword。 The Herald runs away to shadesmar。 They find out he's been doing horrible experiments like dissecting spren bodies? Szeth is still ultra weird。 He decides he wants to go back to Shinovar because he didn't like that the Herald had his Dad's blade。 Before he goes he kills Taravangian - but accidentally it makes him the new Odium/evil God (Confusion: Wtf? No idea whats going on with ALL of these God's like。。 what even is a God, they just seem like people? Except randomly have super powers except what ARE the powers besides showing up to everyone in visions? Also WHO are like these big people。。。 Odium, Cultivation。。。 like WHO are the Gods。 Why is apparently Cultivation there at the end hanging out and showing Odium/Taravanian around。 Wtf?) In the very end, Odium-Taravangian does something to Wit's memories (Confusion: who is Wit。) but we don't really know what。 Also Dalinar arranged for him and Odium to have a big duel in 10 days to stop the war。 Ok so the end? Obviously it was jam packed with plots and adventure and things happening but as more things occur I become more and more confused with literally everything。 It is getting super complex for me and I'm not sure if there is hope for me to understand。 I just read along and understand what I can and leave the rest to feelings of complete confusion。I leave you with hands-down my favourite quote from the entire book, "Journey before destination, you bastard。” (Navani as she finishes her oaths, heals from her knife wound, and defends against attacking Moash) 。。。more
