I was told this was a book that I had to read at least once based on a recent askreddit。 Not impressed。 I was expecting greater dramatization。 Only part that shocked me was the soldier wanting to kill his own fellow soldier who was in shock and unlikely to survive from his injuries by shooting him in the head。 Basically end his misery。 Maybe I'm just not an empathetic person。 I was told this was a book that I had to read at least once based on a recent askreddit。 Not impressed。 I was expecting greater dramatization。 Only part that shocked me was the soldier wanting to kill his own fellow soldier who was in shock and unlikely to survive from his injuries by shooting him in the head。 Basically end his misery。 Maybe I'm just not an empathetic person。 。。。more

This is a chilling novel about the horrors of war coming from the point of a young German solider。 It deals with heavy themes and has vivid descriptions of the front。 I highly recommend this sad but moving novel by Erich Maria Remarque。

Hlavní postavou je PAVEL BÄUMER， který se pod vlivem nacionalistické propagandy a fanatismu svého profesora přihlásil se svými spolužáky z gymnázia dobrovolně do armády。 Prodělává výcvik plný šikanování a později se zúčastní zákopových bojů na západní frontě。 Studenti jsou zpočátku nadšeni， že se přihlásili do armády， že budou hrdě sloužit své vlasti， ale později si uvědomují hrůzy války a přejí si， aby už válka skončila a oni se mohli navrátit do svých domovů。 Autor tímto románem dobyl světovéh Hlavní postavou je PAVEL BÄUMER， který se pod vlivem nacionalistické propagandy a fanatismu svého profesora přihlásil se svými spolužáky z gymnázia dobrovolně do armády。 Prodělává výcvik plný šikanování a později se zúčastní zákopových bojů na západní frontě。 Studenti jsou zpočátku nadšeni， že se přihlásili do armády， že budou hrdě sloužit své vlasti， ale později si uvědomují hrůzy války a přejí si， aby už válka skončila a oni se mohli navrátit do svých domovů。 Autor tímto románem dobyl světového úspěchu。 Kniha se mi líbila a knihu hodnotím na 100 %。Remarque je výborný spisovatel。 V jeho románech cítíme humanistický náboj， je pro něj důležité kamarádství， lehce vypráví， dokáže napínat čtenáře až do konce。 Dočetl jsem se， že pokud se čtenář rozhodne přečíst všechny autorovy knihy， zjistí， že mnohé příběhy jsou šablonovité。 Nemohu posoudit， jestli je toto tvrzení pravdivé， ale skutečností je， že pokud se podívám na hodnocení jeho knih v Databázi knih， tak jeho knihy mají vysoká hodnocení a hodnotilo je hodně čtenářů。 Jelikož čtu příběhy z války， určitě si přečtu další knihy od tohoto autora。Viděl jsem také film， který se mi líbil。 Film z roku 1979 vznikal také v České republice。Citáty z knihy， které mne oslovily:Mlčení bobtná。 Mluvím a musím mluvit。 Tak ho oslovuji a říkám mu to。 "Kamaráde， já jsem tě nechtěl zabít。 Kdybys sem skočil ještě jednou， neudělal bych to， kdybys i ty byl rozumný。 Ale předtím jsi pro mě byl jen myšlenkou， kombinací， která žila v mém mozku a vyvolala předsevzetí - tu kombinaci jsem zabil。 Teprve teď vidím， že jsi člověk jako já。 Myslel jsem na tvé ruční granáty， na tvůj bodák， na tvé zbraně - nyní vidím tvou ženu a tvou tvář a to， co máme společné。 Odpusť mi kamaráde。 Vidím to vždycky příliš pozdě。 Proč nám neříkají znova a znova， že vy jste stejní ubožáci jako my， že se vaše matky trápí stejně jako naše a že vy i my máme stejný strach před smrtí， že stejné je umírání vaše i naše， stejná že je bolest。 。。。more

Erich marie remarque’s writing is absolutely stunning。 i wouldn’t usually pick up a war book but the sensitivity and sureness is striking and the range of description over war to peace is so effective。 I feel like an idiot trying to say what I think about it because it’s beyond words。 highly recommend to anyone

This is a book I’d never be able to sit down and read cover to cover so I’m glad I read the audio book on my morning walks。 This is really a well written story and I pondered whether its better to read a bad story that is well written or a good story not so well written。 And bad is subjective。 The writing was fabulous。 Probably the best book to understand the trials and tribulations of war。 You feel your there and you feel what the soldiers feel。While I loved Remarque’s writing and his word choi This is a book I’d never be able to sit down and read cover to cover so I’m glad I read the audio book on my morning walks。 This is really a well written story and I pondered whether its better to read a bad story that is well written or a good story not so well written。 And bad is subjective。 The writing was fabulous。 Probably the best book to understand the trials and tribulations of war。 You feel your there and you feel what the soldiers feel。While I loved Remarque’s writing and his word choice describing the scenes， my challenge had I read the physical book is that the topic wouldn’t have kept me reading。 I think I would have found other books to pick up whose story was more interesting or entertaining to me。 This sounds like a bad review but it isn’t。 I’m delighted to have listened to the book。 It may not represent today’s war but Remarque puts the reader in the trenches， on patrol， on leave， and elsewhere that soldiers end up during wars。 You feel the pain， agony， and comradeship soldiers feel。 I think this is an excellent book about human suffering during war。 。。。more

Literally my favorite classic。 It’s such a powerful book that is so moving and a honest reflection of the horrors of war。 If you haven’t read it， go read it。 This is one of those seminal classics that I feel is a little underrated， even if it’s up don’t read it， watch the movie。 I think this story should be experienced by everyone。
