Summary

Considered by many the greatest war novel of all time, All Quiet on the Western Front is Erich Maria Remarque’s masterpiece of the German experience during World War I。

I am young, I am twenty years old; yet I know nothing of life but despair, death, fear, and fatuous superficiality cast over an abyss of sorrow。 。 。 。

This is the testament of Paul Bäumer, who enlists with his classmates in the German army during World War I。 They become soldiers with youthful enthusiasm。 But the world of duty, culture, and progress they had been taught breaks in pieces under the first bombardment in the trenches。

Through years of vivid horror, Paul holds fast to a single vow: to fight against the principle of hate that meaninglessly pits young men of the same generation but different uniforms against one another 。 。 。  if only he can come out of the war alive。

“The world has a great writer in Erich Maria Remarque。 He is a craftsman of unquestionably first rank, a man who can bend language to his will。 Whether he writes of men or of inanimate nature, his touch is sensitive, firm, and sure。”The New York Times Book Review

I was told this was a book that I had to read at least once based on a recent askreddit。 Not impressed。 I was expecting greater dramatization。 Only part that shocked me was the soldier wanting to kill his own fellow soldier who was in shock and unlikely to survive from his injuries by shooting him in the head。 Basically end his misery。 Maybe I'm just not an empathetic person。 I was told this was a book that I had to read at least once based on a recent askreddit。 Not impressed。 I was expecting greater dramatization。 Only part that shocked me was the soldier wanting to kill his own fellow soldier who was in shock and unlikely to survive from his injuries by shooting him in the head。 Basically end his misery。 Maybe I'm just not an empathetic person。 。。。more

This is a chilling novel about the horrors of war coming from the point of a young German solider。 It deals with heavy themes and has vivid descriptions of the front。 I highly recommend this sad but moving novel by Erich Maria Remarque。

A harrowing, raw look at the First World War through the eyes of a German rifleman。 Above all, the story highlights the twin rewards and plight of war: that it brings us comrades, and that it takes them away。Definitely a must-read anti-war book that more people should have read after its publication。 Perhaps then, WW2 would not have happened。

Currently my favorite book I have ever read。 This novel paints the horrifying reality of war and the individual effect on a person so well。

A very harrowing book, albeit with the occasional much needed comedic section。 Definitely gives a new perspective on all our current experiences with Covid。

A little hard to get through, but all in all a good read。 I found it interesting that the dedication said, "This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure。 。 。 It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped the shells, were destroyed by the war。" A little hard to get through, but all in all a good read。 I found it interesting that the dedication said, "This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure。 。 。 It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped the shells, were destroyed by the war。" 。。。more

A sobering book which teaches some valuable truths。 It was also easy to read and entertaining, if I can use that word to describe a book like this。

profondo, vero, crudo。 perfetto per capire, se così si può dire, l’atrocità della guerra。 ho fatto mille sottolineature。 terribilmente bello。

love me some nihilistic, 'war-is-terrible' stuff。 this book was actually incredibly harrowing and hard to read at times, especially knowing this was based on remarque's real experiences in the war。 and the writing was absolutely incredible (and the translation was v good in my opinion) in painting a picture of the horror and hopelessness of war。 love me some nihilistic, 'war-is-terrible' stuff。 this book was actually incredibly harrowing and hard to read at times, especially knowing this was based on remarque's real experiences in the war。 and the writing was absolutely incredible (and the translation was v good in my opinion) in painting a picture of the horror and hopelessness of war。 。。。more

A brilliant and remarkable account of war。 Literally similar to Matterhorn, but more intense。 Remarque expresses such realism that one feels one is in a trench fighting for life。

Ulbrich, David J。 "A male-conscious critique of Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front。" The Journal of Men’s Studies 3。3 (1995): 229-240。Оценићу књигу кад се саставим, лелуја ми од четири до пет。 。。。more

Erich marie remarque’s writing is absolutely stunning。 i wouldn’t usually pick up a war book but the sensitivity and sureness is striking and the range of description over war to peace is so effective。 I feel like an idiot trying to say what I think about it because it’s beyond words。 highly recommend to anyone

This was a book I read whilst I was at school。 At the time of reading this I hadn't read anything war related from a German perspective。 It was quite an eye opening read and one I really enjoyed。 I did read this nearly 10 years ago now but it has definitely stuck with me。 I would recommend this as a bit of an alternative read, especially if you are interested in historical novels。 I often talk about this book when any kind of war related novels are brought up and it is one that I often recommend This was a book I read whilst I was at school。 At the time of reading this I hadn't read anything war related from a German perspective。 It was quite an eye opening read and one I really enjoyed。 I did read this nearly 10 years ago now but it has definitely stuck with me。 I would recommend this as a bit of an alternative read, especially if you are interested in historical novels。 I often talk about this book when any kind of war related novels are brought up and it is one that I often recommend to people to try。 Whilst reading The Tattooist of Auschwitz and other books in this series, it was quite interesting to have read a book from the 'oppositions' point of view。 It made the whole experience a little more valued。 All Quiet on the Western Front 。。。more

This book was sitting in my shelf for AGES! Reading it now makes me feel how on earth I missed reading it for so long! What erudition, what wisdom what pain! The way he puts it in writing the complexity of feelings and maze of thoughts。。。is so touching! There are several thoughts that are a treasure of wisdom and universally applicable! The wisdom will remain with me for long!

This is a book I’d never be able to sit down and read cover to cover so I’m glad I read the audio book on my morning walks。 This is really a well written story and I pondered whether its better to read a bad story that is well written or a good story not so well written。 And bad is subjective。 The writing was fabulous。 Probably the best book to understand the trials and tribulations of war。 You feel your there and you feel what the soldiers feel。While I loved Remarque’s writing and his word choi This is a book I’d never be able to sit down and read cover to cover so I’m glad I read the audio book on my morning walks。 This is really a well written story and I pondered whether its better to read a bad story that is well written or a good story not so well written。 And bad is subjective。 The writing was fabulous。 Probably the best book to understand the trials and tribulations of war。 You feel your there and you feel what the soldiers feel。While I loved Remarque’s writing and his word choice describing the scenes, my challenge had I read the physical book is that the topic wouldn’t have kept me reading。 I think I would have found other books to pick up whose story was more interesting or entertaining to me。 This sounds like a bad review but it isn’t。 I’m delighted to have listened to the book。 It may not represent today’s war but Remarque puts the reader in the trenches, on patrol, on leave, and elsewhere that soldiers end up during wars。 You feel the pain, agony, and comradeship soldiers feel。 I think this is an excellent book about human suffering during war。  。。。more

Literally my favorite classic。 It’s such a powerful book that is so moving and a honest reflection of the horrors of war。 If you haven’t read it, go read it。 This is one of those seminal classics that I feel is a little underrated, even if it’s up don’t read it, watch the movie。 I think this story should be experienced by everyone。
