Summary

New York Times bestseller and Newbery Honor Book!

A gorgeously written, hopeful middle grade novel in verse about a young girl who must leave Syria to move to the United States, perfect for fans of Jason Reynolds and Aisha Saeed。

Jude never thought she’d be leaving her beloved older brother and father behind, all the way across the ocean in Syria。 But when things in her hometown start becoming volatile, Jude and her mother are sent to live in Cincinnati with relatives。

At first, everything in America seems too fast and too loud。 The American movies that Jude has always loved haven’t quite prepared her for starting school in the US—and her new label of “Middle Eastern,” an identity she’s never known before。

But this life also brings unexpected surprises—there are new friends, a whole new family, and a school musical that Jude might just try out for。 Maybe America, too, is a place where Jude can be seen as she really is。

This lyrical, life-affirming story is about losing and finding home and, most importantly, finding yourself。

I do not usually read middle grade books (this is the first one of this year I believe) but wow, did it do an amazing job at tackling such heavy topics。 Jude is such a loveable character and though getting to know her life and subsequent struggles, this book really does a good job talking about violence, discrimination, immigration, etc。 If I was a teacher, i would make sure to have this book on my library shelves for sure。

A phenomenal book, presenting the experiences of a girl from war torn Syria trying to assimilate into American culture at 12 years old, while still worrying about loved ones left behind。 I learned an Arabic proverb from this book that I think will have a profound effect on my relationships with the difficult people in my life: "She cannot give what she does not have。" For that reason alone I would be glad I listened to this book, narrated with great talent by Vaneh Assadourian。 A phenomenal book, presenting the experiences of a girl from war torn Syria trying to assimilate into American culture at 12 years old, while still worrying about loved ones left behind。 I learned an Arabic proverb from this book that I think will have a profound effect on my relationships with the difficult people in my life: "She cannot give what she does not have。" For that reason alone I would be glad I listened to this book, narrated with great talent by Vaneh Assadourian。 。。。more

Lyrical and careful without being maudlin or mean or exaggerated。

This is a beautiful, smart, big-hearted middle-grade novel about the Arab immigrant experience。 Loved it。

Perfect verse novel for kids who want to belongThis book is a fantastic middle grades read set in verse, short chapters。 Jude, the protagonist, is searching for a sense of belonging in her new home, the US, but I found the entire cast of characters in the book, Jude’s family as well as her new friends, were looking for that belonging and acceptance as well。 Very tight and packs a punch!

Dayle Ranallo

The main character has a strong voice。 It is a great illustration that we are more alike inside than we are different。

Kristina Mullen

Such a great middle grade read that explores the complexities of being a Syrian refugee。

There is just something about stories written in verses that hold so much power over me, and this one delivered as expected as well

This story managed to be hopeful and realistic at once。 I loved the inclusion of Arabic proverbs in the storytelling。 Representation matters, and this book is wonderful in that realm。 I think if there were an edition written in both Arabic and English, for people who could read both, it would be absolutely perfect because it could communicate Jude’s growth and narration even more deeply。

She makes you feel like a load of freshly baked bread。This book is so sweet and I loved being able to see the USA through Jude's eyes。 The book shows so many aspects, including her immigrant uncle who tries to fit in and his American daughter, Sarah, who struggles to accept her new cousin from abroad。 It's not just about being an immigrant, it's also about Jude learning to be brave and go for her dreams。 I want to be friends with her She makes you feel like a load of freshly baked bread。This book is so sweet and I loved being able to see the USA through Jude's eyes。 The book shows so many aspects, including her immigrant uncle who tries to fit in and his American daughter, Sarah, who struggles to accept her new cousin from abroad。 It's not just about being an immigrant, it's also about Jude learning to be brave and go for her dreams。 I want to be friends with her 。。。more

This is such a great book with many poignant observations about American culture。I read this one with my 7-year old, stopping every now and then to check her comprehension。 It opened up some great conversations about why some people treat others poorly and how we should view and treat those that look or believe differently than we do。(Note for anyone considering this as a read-aloud for younger kids: The book does address menstruation, but this topic is one we are already open about。 I did skip This is such a great book with many poignant observations about American culture。I read this one with my 7-year old, stopping every now and then to check her comprehension。 It opened up some great conversations about why some people treat others poorly and how we should view and treat those that look or believe differently than we do。(Note for anyone considering this as a read-aloud for younger kids: The book does address menstruation, but this topic is one we are already open about。 I did skip the word “prostitute” in one passage because I wasn’t ready to open that can of worms。 Otherwise, it was smooth sailing。) 。。。more

Middle school novel in free verseWritten in the first person by the middle school Syrian immigrant female protagonist。 I would rather not rate it because I seldom like free verse, and this not an exception。 I mostly feel free verse is an unsuitable framework for juvenile fiction, especially for fiction where I prefer a plot and a convincing voice。 There are some special moments and lines, but mostly I felt like the author tried too hard and it showed。 It did not feel seamless or authentic。 It is Middle school novel in free verseWritten in the first person by the middle school Syrian immigrant female protagonist。 I would rather not rate it because I seldom like free verse, and this not an exception。 I mostly feel free verse is an unsuitable framework for juvenile fiction, especially for fiction where I prefer a plot and a convincing voice。 There are some special moments and lines, but mostly I felt like the author tried too hard and it showed。 It did not feel seamless or authentic。 It is also message fiction, and while it is pretty well done as message fiction, message fiction, like free verse, is just not a genre I enjoy。 。。。more

I have to admit this book was AMAZING 🤩。 This book is one of those books that help open people’s eyes to what’s going on in parts of the world and how easy we have it, how much racism is in this world, and how hard it can be for refugees to be accepted by the community。 I would really Recommend EVERYONE to read this book。Ratings: Overall: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Characters: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️。5World building:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Plot:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Makes you want to keep reading: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
