Summary

The chimneys of industry rise over Adua and the world seethes with new opportunities。 But old scores run deep as ever。

On the blood-soaked borders of Angland, Leo dan Brock struggles to win fame on the battlefield, and defeat the marauding armies of Stour Nightfall。 He hopes for help from the crown。 But King Jezal’s son, the feckless Prince Orso, is a man who specialises in disappointments。

Savine dan Glokta – socialite, investor, and daughter of the most feared man in the Union – plans to claw her way to the top of the slag-heap of society by any means necessary。 But the slums boil over with a rage that all the money in the world cannot control。

The age of the machine dawns, but the age of magic refuses to die。 With the help of the mad hillwoman Isern-i-Phail, Rikke struggles to control the blessing, or the curse, of the Long Eye。 Glimpsing the future is one thing, but with the guiding hand of the First of the Magi still pulling the strings, changing it will be quite another…

An excellent look at a fictional kingdom that finds itself headed into an industrial age。 Good character development, some interesting twists, turns, and odd character connections that tie the story together well。 Enough character lines for the story to be diverse but not too many where you lose track of who is who。 A good read!

Clay Anderson

A wild ride from page 1。 Highly highly recommend。 It was just plain fun to read。

Mick Fletcher

highly satisfying, darkly satirical

Great book although not as great as the First Law Trilogy。 The fact that it is set in the same world (~30-40 years later?), and seeing some of the old characters, is a nice bonus。 Also, the new characters are really interesting and fun。 The plot itself is not quite as interesting as the one in the First Law Trilogy, but maybe it will pick up steam in the following books。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I’ll admit, at first I wasn’t onboard with Abercrombie’s decision to largely leave out the first trilogy’s characters。 In hindsight, I think that’s what makes these books tic。 In the post Game of Thrones era, most authors aren’t afraid to cut characters。 Obviously Abercrombie isn’t either, but it’s the way that he slices his threads that stands out。 It’s less shock value and more narrative device。 It also doesn’t hurt that this new crop might even be better than the first。

Fantastic, a must read!

Very good follow on to the first series。 Really enjoy his style of writing and characters。

MehThis is one of those books I wish there were sparknotes for。 I got to about page 87 and realized I was bored with every character but Rikke and it seemed like almost nothing had happened。 I skipped to the end and stuff did happen but it didn’t feel like enough to justify going back and reading the rest。

Everything I love from Abercrombie is firing on full cylinders here。 Snappy, morally ambiguous characters, outstanding action and battle sequences, and sharp writing are on masterful display。 As the first in a new trilogy but also the 7th book in the overarching world, it sets up characters new and old in surprising, fun, and in typical fashion, twisted ways。 Having read the other books prior to this, the depth you get from references to older characters or events is fantastic, but it does not b Everything I love from Abercrombie is firing on full cylinders here。 Snappy, morally ambiguous characters, outstanding action and battle sequences, and sharp writing are on masterful display。 As the first in a new trilogy but also the 7th book in the overarching world, it sets up characters new and old in surprising, fun, and in typical fashion, twisted ways。 Having read the other books prior to this, the depth you get from references to older characters or events is fantastic, but it does not bog the story down in fan service。 It's like enjoying a good glass of wine, it's great on it's own, but knowing about wine profiles and fundamentals only increases your appreciation of it。 。。。more

It took me a while to get into this story, but I think that was more on me than the book itself。 Once I found my footing, it was hard to stop。 The balance between vulgarity and sweetness, violence and wit are perfect。 Abercrombie is a talented writer and storyteller。 I had other books lined up after this, but I think I will have to head straight into The Trouble With Peace now and force myself to patiently wait for The Wisdom of Crowds this fall。

After the heroes, and red country, I was a bit worried that I had burnt out on first law, but hooooly shit was I wrong。Somehow he gets me to enjoy reading hooty tooty nobles, and keeps me laughing one line to next。 Fantastic book, top 3 so far for this year

I can't find enough ways to praise this book。 I also have a keen desire to punch the author in the guts for doing exactly that to me! Over the course of the story, he has manipulated my emotions like a boss。Many of the characters are thoroughly despicable, yet he manages to make them endearing in subtle ways。 I fell in love with Sand Dan Glokta while reading the First Law Trilogy and he's still my overall favourite, despite having a much reduced role in this story。 His daughter is also a fascina I can't find enough ways to praise this book。 I also have a keen desire to punch the author in the guts for doing exactly that to me! Very good as always。The characters are as always a strength, top notch and looking forward to getting my hands on the next one。

Fun read, took a little longer than The Blade Itself took to get the story and characters going。 Abercrombie does however get you twisted into the world the same way The First Law did and keeps you wanting more。 Ready for The Trouble With Peace!

Just finished reading A Little Hatred。As always Joe Abercrombie developed nice characters and the story plot keeps you involved in the book。The book itself was an easy read - took me 3 days for the whole book。

。。。more

This is my first novel by this author。 I really liked it。 He is very gritty and definitely doesn't pull any punches。 The humor was very well placed and the book paced along nicely。 There was a lot of setup as is usual in a first novel of a series。 I really wish there was a map。 I look forward to the next installment。 This is my first novel by this author。 I really liked it。 He is very gritty and definitely doesn't pull any punches。 The humor was very well placed and the book paced along nicely。 There was a lot of setup as is usual in a first novel of a series。 I really wish there was a map。 I look forward to the next installment。 。。。more

This book was a really bad suprise。 Abercrombie used to be my favorite contemporary author。 As a huge fan of Abercrombie´s First Law Saga i was really looking forward to reading this book。 I preordered the book and counted the days。。。 And then this dribble。。 I don´t know if Abercrombie had a stroke or joined a cult the book certainly reads that way。。Everything i loved about his former writing is gone。 Gone are the unique and fascinating, if somewhat tainted, underdog characters, gone is the thri This book was a really bad suprise。 Abercrombie used to be my favorite contemporary author。 As a huge fan of Abercrombie´s First Law Saga i was really looking forward to reading this book。 I preordered the book and counted the days。。。 And then this dribble。。 I don´t know if Abercrombie had a stroke or joined a cult the book certainly reads that way。。Everything i loved about his former writing is gone。 Gone are the unique and fascinating, if somewhat tainted, underdog characters, gone is the thrill of reading, gone is the interesting pre industrial setting with the ebbing magic in the world, gone is everything that made the series truly special and dear to me。。Now there is just another early industrial era setting with its coherent social problems。 A scenario of which i truly got tired off by now as everybody and their mother seems to write about it nowadays。。。 Pollution, social injustice, poverty of the masses, exploitation and social uproar - nothing i want to read for relaxation really。 If i want to become depressed, i only have to follow current politics。。。Maybe Abercrombie is burned out。 When i think about his new characters - a term which seems rather generous here - this would be the best explanation。 Mary Stue, daughter of Glokta, the seer daughter of Dogman, prettyboy, proud scion of house Brock, little Attila from the North son of somebody, and last but not least Orso, the son of the king (the only remotely likeable character by the way)。 They all seem underdeveloped when compared to the refreshingly unique older characters while all being overprivileged, attractive and influential。 In the old books you would root for underdogs fighting for survival, here there are no underdog main protagonists anymore, just pampered sons and daughters of old well known characters。。The daughter of Glokta would fit perfectly into Twillight, she is a real Mary Stue。 She is beautiful, intelligent infinitely rich, powerful, a great duelist, fucking the prince。。。。 There is nothing she can´t do it seems。 Good for her!Dogman´s daughter is a bit better, but not much。 She seems to have come out of a book of Marion Zimmer -Bradley。 Also, i didn´t care at all about her spurned love towards Prince Charming。。。Brock junior with his mummy issues reminded me of Prince Charming of the Shrek series。 A naive young girl´s wet dream。 Unfortunately however, i am not a young girl。 I only found him embarassing。 A Ramsay Bolton like character, the son of another well known old character。 Lastly, Orso, the only new character whose name i remember, was at least likeable。 He was a drunk, a wastrel and powerless whoremonger with good but somewhat naive intentions。 A true Prince。 Especially given who his parents are。。。 Orso has/had at least potential (even though i found the incest scene an unnecessary plot device used by Abercrombie to shock the readers)。 I just really could not care about the others and their rich/powerful people problems。 Furthermore, it seems that Abercrombie nowadays as well follows the mainstream doctrine that demands that women are omnipotent and clever almost angel-like creatures, while men are incapable and dumb brutes。 A true disgrace。The setting is a shame too。 There are two main plots:1 The social problems due to industrialization in the Midderlands *yawn*2 A new invasion from the North? What an imaginative and refreshingly new approach。。 We only had two wars against uncivilized, unwashed barbarians in this astoundingly boring area in the books before。 *sarcasm off*Conclusio: thank you for your earlier books, Abercrombie。 But you and i are done。 I hope your intention to start a new career as writer for Buffy or Twilight like books will fulfill you。。。 。。。more

Abercrombie stays true to form。 Wonderfully broken characters, brutal and unapologetic graphic descriptions of shocking events, intricate world politic machinations in the background。 Great stuff。Not a five star for the simple reason that after so many books it's becoming a mite predictable, and some scenes made me plain uncomfortable with the amount of spotlight and attention that was given to something heartbreaking。 Abercrombie stays true to form。 Wonderfully broken characters, brutal and unapologetic graphic descriptions of shocking events, intricate world politic machinations in the background。 Great stuff。Not a five star for the simple reason that after so many books it's becoming a mite predictable, and some scenes made me plain uncomfortable with the amount of spotlight and attention that was given to something heartbreaking。 。。。more

As a big fan of all of Joe Abercrombie's previous work, I found this one, the start of the Age of Madness run, hard to get into。The writing is still there, but the structure of the novel made it a difficult task to sink back into his world; there are multiple POV characters, and each (short) chapter flits between them, which meant getting to the know the new cast took a while。However, once the plot gets moving, the structure becomes easier to manage, and the last third has more than enough payof As a big fan of all of Joe Abercrombie's previous work, I found this one, the start of the Age of Madness run, hard to get into。The writing is still there, but the structure of the novel made it a difficult task to sink back into his world; there are multiple POV characters, and each (short) chapter flits between them, which meant getting to the know the new cast took a while。However, once the plot gets moving, the structure becomes easier to manage, and the last third has more than enough payoff for the setup。 。。。more
