Summary

Yuki is a typical college student--it's just that she can't hear。 A chance encounter on a train leads to a serious crush。。。but will he give her a chance? A sweet and relatable manga romance from the creator of Shortcake Cake!

Even with a hearing aid, the voices of others are an indistinct blur for Yuki。 But she never lets that get in the way of a life full of friends, social media, and cute fashion。 One day, she's browsing her phone on train, when a tourist asks her for directions。 Yuki nearly panics。。。until the handsome Itsuomi steps in to help。 It turns out her new crush is a friend of a friend, and Yuki's world starts to widen。 But even though Itsuomi-kun can speak three languages, sign language isn't one of them。 How will Yuki communicate her budding feelings?

From the acclaimed author of Shortcake Cake, the hit shojo series with more than a million copies in print, this new work is full of real-life details about Japanese sign language and living without hearing, and it's sure to please fans of romantic stories like A Silent Voice, Kimi ni Todoke, and Love in Focus

I was not sure about this series when I read the summary, but I don't regret start reading it。 It is beautiful and I really want to see how the story and the characters develop。 I was not sure about this series when I read the summary, but I don't regret start reading it。 It is beautiful and I really want to see how the story and the characters develop。 。。。more

This continues to be an incredibly cute romance, and this volume was momentous! Very heartwarming, and I really like some of Yuki's uncertainty in this relationship。 Some potential drama with Oushi rears its head, but I'm not too terribly worried。We also see Yuki apply for a job for the first time, though it felt a bit depressing。I'm also really glad that we get into a bit more with sign language, especially one of the important aspects--fingerspelling!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Itsuomi and Yuki finally became a couple in this volume。 But that's not all that I love from it, what I love more from this is how the series really showcases the things a deaf person goes through in a relationship, more-so, I love how Morishita-sensei shows us readers some things about sign language。 I also love how Itsuomi respects Yuki in a way that he exerts effort into understanding sign language and stuff。 Anyway, I'm looking forward for more doki doki moments in the next volumes。 Itsuomi and Yuki finally became a couple in this volume。 But that's not all that I love from it, what I love more from this is how the series really showcases the things a deaf person goes through in a relationship, more-so, I love how Morishita-sensei shows us readers some things about sign language。 I also love how Itsuomi respects Yuki in a way that he exerts effort into understanding sign language and stuff。 Anyway, I'm looking forward for more doki doki moments in the next volumes。 。。。more

I've been reading manga for decades and I honestly believe this is one of my favorite all-time titles。 It never falls into the pit of manga tropes and the characters are so (mostly) likeable and real。 Every chapter is interesting and moves the plot forward。 I can't wait for more。 I've been reading manga for decades and I honestly believe this is one of my favorite all-time titles。 It never falls into the pit of manga tropes and the characters are so (mostly) likeable and real。 Every chapter is interesting and moves the plot forward。 I can't wait for more。 。。。more

I really love this series。 Yuki and Itsuo are a cute couple and I love that his voice is always gentle with Yuki。 I'm really interested in seeing how their relationship progresses。 The only thing I hate is the jealous childhood friend, because I want my ship to be happy and cruising。 I really love this series。 Yuki and Itsuo are a cute couple and I love that his voice is always gentle with Yuki。 I'm really interested in seeing how their relationship progresses。 The only thing I hate is the jealous childhood friend, because I want my ship to be happy and cruising。 。。。more

This manga continues to be very sweet。 However, I am on the fence of giving it four stars only, mainly for the fact that there is still too much “reading into things” is going on and the communication should be more。 Once again in this volume we don’t really see things from Itsuomi’s view, and I really missed that。 It was great that his view was involved in volume two。 I am glad they finally talk about things seriously and we get out answer to the “will they, won’t they” that has been building f This manga continues to be very sweet。 However, I am on the fence of giving it four stars only, mainly for the fact that there is still too much “reading into things” is going on and the communication should be more。 Once again in this volume we don’t really see things from Itsuomi’s view, and I really missed that。 It was great that his view was involved in volume two。 I am glad they finally talk about things seriously and we get out answer to the “will they, won’t they” that has been building from book one。I am excited on how things are developing but I hope the communication becomes even more frequent and clearer, there was a little too much miscommunication was in this volume for me - Yuki not daring to interpret things literally because of her shyness, Yuki sometimes missing what Itsuomi was saying because she didn’t pay attention to his face, etc。 She also said more than once that Itsoumi was hard to read and I didn’t like that, I hope this improves between them。 But in the end they did repeat and talk through these missed things so at least things were resolved in a satisfactory way。I am glad to see Yuki enter Itsuomi’s world in honest and I hope the two will grow closer。 。。。more

A Sign of Affection, Vol。 3 by suu Morishita ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐While I try to keep specifics, like dialogue, under spoiler tags, I do talk about multiple scenes throughout my review that some might find spoiler-y if you don't want to know anything that happens at all。 The biggest takeaway from this volume is that Yuki and Itsuomi (view spoiler)[are an official couple (hide spoiler)] by the end。 She confesses her feelings in sign language (view spoiler)[that she likes him。。。she taught him the sign for “I like A Sign of Affection, Vol。 3 by suu Morishita ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐While I try to keep specifics, like dialogue, under spoiler tags, I do talk about multiple scenes throughout my review that some might find spoiler-y if you don't want to know anything that happens at all。 The biggest takeaway from this volume is that Yuki and Itsuomi (view spoiler)[are an official couple (hide spoiler)] by the end。 She confesses her feelings in sign language (view spoiler)[that she likes him。。。she taught him the sign for “I like” in volume。。。two? I think。 It was as they were leaving the laundromat, I believe) (hide spoiler)], but he doesn’t see。 Then he confesses his feelings out loud (view spoiler)[ “Yuki。 Is it okay if I like you?” (hide spoiler)], which she doesn’t hear (of course) or see because she’s looking down。 These two, I swear! So cute! He drops the bomb that he’ll be travelling for a whole-ass month, but wants to make time for each other when he gets back。 Anyway, we switch to Oushi who runs into Yuki’s mom and decides to stick his nose into business it doesn’t belong in。 Basically, he gets Yuki’s phone number from her。 Why the mother didn’t question why he didn’t already have it and ask her daughter before giving it out, I don’t know。 Incidentally, he mentions his dog-sitting for someone named Izumi, who I don’t believe was ever brought up before。 We do see more of her later, though, and boy do I have thoughts! We then switch to Kyouya having a heart-to-heart with Itsuomi about his intentions toward Yuki。 You know, what a great guy! This whole way he’s been looking out for our girl’s best interests even though he has no loyalty to her while Itsuomi’s his cousin。 And no, it’s not because Kyouya is interested in Yuki himself。 Itsuomi finally reveals to Kyouya how and why he likes Yuki and it is EYE OPENING (view spoiler)[ “I don’t just look at her。 When it comes to Yuki, I gaze at her in fascination。” (hide spoiler)] And THAT, my friends, is when Kyouya finally realizes that Itsuomi’s got it bad for our girl! They’re interrupted by customers arriving, but it’s Rin-chan and Yuki。 And I’m guessing Kyouya forcing him to reflect on his feelings openly caused an urgency in him because Itsuomi almost immediately ushers Yuki outside to have a word。 Or maybe it was just a case of him taking advantage of an unexpected opportunity since he does say he was originally going to tell her this after he returned from his month-long trip。 Yeah, I’m salty about it, so what? LOL He decides to sign it to her (something he learned on his own, no less) (view spoiler)[ “Go out with me。” (hide spoiler)] And then she lip reads him saying, (view spoiler)[ “Yuki, let’s be a couple。” (hide spoiler)] Oh, my heart! I'm skipping a lot of the good stuff here, but it's SUCH a good scene。 They then go back inside and Itsuomi announces it to Rin and Kyouya, who have hilarious reactions。 Then Rin-chan, who’s always looking out for her girl, brings up the key that Yuki saw Emma give to Itsuomi。 So after basically hijacking Yuki from Rin, he walks her to Rin’s place, and brings it up with Yuki。 (view spoiler)[ “You don’t have to worry about how Emma gave me back my key。 I was just letting her borrow my unit。 But I won’t be doing that anymore。” (hide spoiler)] Which I really like - he’s taking the initiative to let her know that he’s not going to do something that would make her uncomfortable like that again, even if she wasn’t the one to express it to him。 That was a mature move on his part。 We then get the second mention of Yuki possibly traveling with him in the future, with him asking if she has a passport and saying that whenever she gets one, he’ll take her with him。 I notice that he didn’t say “might”, but that he would take her with him。 This moment sparks Yuki’s part-time job search that we see later on in the volume。 And then。。。oh my gosh, the palm against the door。。。the hug。。。adorable! There’s a scene where Kyouya calls Itsuomi while he’s at the laundromat and asks him the important questions, like Kyouya so often does。 Why did Itsuomi decide to ask Yuki out right before a month-long (grumble) trip? And again, because Kyouya seems to have an affect on him, he opens up and drops quite the bomb on Kyouya and the readers (view spoiler)[ “I didn’t wanna regret not asking her out sooner。 I know we only just started this relationship, but。。。I can’t imagine breaking up with Yuki。” (hide spoiler)] And that’s saying something, considering how young he is (only 22)。 It’s revealing because it shows the reader that he’s much more serious about her than everyone assumed, which I thought was really cool because he’s always drawn so stoic-looking。 It’s hard to get a read on him most of the time。 Incidentally, we do learn from Kyouya that Yuki isn’t Itsuomi’s first girlfriend。 It’s a throwaway comment, but I hope it doesn’t come back to bite us in the butt down the road, especially since we already have Emma to contend with。 And so begins the month-long trip。 During this time, he keeps in touch most days and Yuki spends her time looking for a job。 We get to experience her in an interview that doesn’t go well because the employer isn’t considerate of her deafness。 He’ll call her? Right。 She also meets up with Oushi and his sister, who also knows sign。 During this encounter, Oushi asks her about Itsuomi, whether she’s slept at his house。。。you know, personal stuff like that, that’s none of his business。 She’s annoyed with him and he makes a point of saying he doesn’t want her to get the wrong impression, that he wants a “cute” girlfriend (Oushi, don’t make me hurt you) and that he’s just speaking as a childhood friend。 And then。。。they reunite! Staring at each other across the train tracks, no less! From across the way, she lip reads him asking to hug her so as soon as the train passes she crosses to him with open arms。。。only for him to (view spoiler)[kiss her! (hide spoiler)] She misread what he was saying - he asked if he could (view spoiler)[kiss her, not hug her (hide spoiler)]。 She freaks out internally, but they go on to spend the afternoon together (their first date!) and the volume ends with him taking her to meet one of his two best friends, Shin。 So far this series doesn’t seem to be the type to end on dramatic cliffhangers。 You know the type -- something distressing happens and then it just ENDS and you’re left wondering what you’re going to do with your life until the next volume comes out。 These end on。。。sweet。。。cliffhangers, I guess is a way to put it。 Something sweet happens and you want to see the characters’ reactions, but you’re not worried that everything’s about to fall apart。 I appreciate that SO much。 The series also seems to be on track for their relationship to be a healthy one where if there’s an issue, they talk about it sooner rather than later, and resolve it before it grows into something huge。 And while there do seem to be a couple of people who want to inconvenience the growing romance between Yuki and Itsuomi (Oushi and Emma, respectively), it’s not “in your face” and there are indicators that while Oushi and Emma are nursing unrequited crushes, there are people in their own lives who have been waiting for the chance to love them。。。if they’d only give them a chance (view spoiler)[Shin definitely has a thing for Emma, and I think Izumi has a thing for Oushi。 You can read the chapters as they come out, so once volume 4 hits, you’ll see what I mean (hide spoiler)]。 If that’s the case, even the interloper drama might not be that bad。I really hope not。 There are enough hurdles for Yuki and Itsuomi to overcome from within their own relationship。 They don’t need outside forces pushing in, too。 。。。more

I absolutely love this series! This is such an interesting story。 Yuki was born deaf。 Her whole life, many people acted/treated her different/special when they learned she couldn't hear。 She never liked that。 Then, she meets Itsuomi, and right off the bat, he treats her with respect, never makes her feel "different"。 He also goes to great lengths to learn sign language, so he can more easily converse with her。 He was obviously smitten with her from the moment he saw her。 She fell hard for him, to I absolutely love this series! This is such an interesting story。 Yuki was born deaf。 Her whole life, many people acted/treated her different/special when they learned she couldn't hear。 She never liked that。 Then, she meets Itsuomi, and right off the bat, he treats her with respect, never makes her feel "different"。 He also goes to great lengths to learn sign language, so he can more easily converse with her。 He was obviously smitten with her from the moment he saw her。 She fell hard for him, too。 They have a wonderful love growing between them。 Itsuomi is so good at making Yuki feel loved。 It makes her so happy。 I want to say that the Mangka of this series is doing an absolutely splendid job of creating a love story involving a hearing-impaired person。 The Mangaka is not pandering to the audience, no one's making a big deal about Yuki being deaf, everyone is being kind and understanding, and while the point of being deaf is conveyed, it's not a "Oh wow the gorgeous deaf girl meets prince charming, he sweeps her off her feet, they run off and get married, never have any RL issues, and live happily ever after in a castle in the sky"。 Well, parts of that are kind of happening, but not in a demeaning, condescending, or ridiculous way。 Yuki being deaf, and the challenges she endures are being shown with grace and courage。 The Mangaka doesn't try to make Yuki's deafness the main point of this story。 No, this is a true love story, where two wonderful people meet, begin to get to know each other, and begin to fall in love。 Yuki being deaf is just a byline。 An extra topping on the pizza, extra zest in the dressing, you get my point。 This wonderful story focuses on the love that has began to grow between Yuki and Itsuomi。 I want to applaud the Mangaka for doing such an incredible amount of research, to not only correctly and properly show the signing, but to also open a door for us to be able to see the day-to-day life of a hearing-impaired college student with dignity and kindness。 。。。more

I still love the heroine and her bestie, the art is cute and beautiful, the romance isn't blowing me away but it still makes me fuzzy inside and there's just a gentleness and heart to the story that I can't pinpoint but adore it nevertheless。 4。0 stars - Just lovely! I’m very relieved to learn that Itsumoi truly does care for Yuki in a more romantic sense。 It was also really interesting seeing their relationship progress a bit。 Also, it was interesting to see more of Oushi。 I’m curious to see how he’ll react whenever he does find out that Yuki is dating Itsumoi。

Itsuomi is about to head off on another backpacking excursion, but not before he and Yuki have a heart-to-heart talk。 It turns out that honesty and communication might just play a part in a relationship after all。。。Ah, I like this book (minus those awful covers)。 There’s really nothing like it right now (I would say [and have said] that A Perfect World is probably its closest match in subject matter, but from a very different perspective) and I continue to respect the work Morishita is putting i Itsuomi is about to head off on another backpacking excursion, but not before he and Yuki have a heart-to-heart talk。 It turns out that honesty and communication might just play a part in a relationship after all。。。Ah, I like this book (minus those awful covers)。 There’s really nothing like it right now (I would say [and have said] that A Perfect World is probably its closest match in subject matter, but from a very different perspective) and I continue to respect the work Morishita is putting in here。Yuki absolutely makes this series come alive - she’s so upbeat and positive and trying her best to communicate despite being deaf。 While the art remains singularly excellent, she is practically animated on the page at times (the chibi shocked expressions in this book are beyond reproach)。Itsuomi is, despite the book’s efforts, a little too poured from the mould of ideal super boyfriend - the cool college dude with a secret romantic side who travels the world so he can see things。 Still, this wouldn’t be the first Morishita book where the male lead came a far distant second to the female (yes I am still annoyed by Shortcake Cake)。I do give him credit for being very normal with Yuki, trying to pick up more sign language, and trying to involve her in his life。 His pronouncements on how much of a pure soul she is read like something out of a trashy romance, but if that’s the worst thing he does then I’ll be pretty happy。Where this book really earns its stars by how good it continues to be at depicting Yuki’s deafness and how she handles or experiences various situations。 I found the section about her trying to find work and the boneheaded responses of the interviewer really believable (and depressing) and it provides a nice contrast to how normal Itsuomi treats her。It’s a simple change, but it really shakes up the formula。 How exactly are the two of them going to handle things when they fight? They still both have misreads and mishearings and skipped words and I love how this comes across in the text。 There are a lot of cues that you miss without hearing and I feel relatively confident the series will keep addressing this going forward。Still not sure about overprotective rival guy, who seems unsure if he’s just going to be an unwanted worried parent or just tsundere his way into a plot complication。 His sister was a cool addition to the cast though - I like that she sees right through Yuki from the get-go。3。5 stars, rounded up because of all the effort going into what it’s portraying and for not just shoving Yuki’s hearing issues to the side and making it an integral part of the storytelling while still making her a character with a disability and not a disability with some characterization。 It’s not necessarily riveting from panel to panel, but it’s overall a very good book and a satisfying end to a year of manga。 。。。more
