Summary

A reverse harem, enemies to lovers, slow burn romance。

"The relentless clock of fate was groaning over to the next hour, ringing the arrival of a battle as old as time, sounding the final alarm, the final chance to fall to our blades or lift them high。 It was repeating infernal hours that grew hungrier with each turn, more vicious than the day, the year, the century before。"

The end was here。

The great war had begun。

I had been torn apart and remade, a marionette to dance over the coals of this world, stitched together by my tormentors。 The great masters thought they could break me down and own me。

They were wrong。

I had won my freedom, my place in this world, my golden-eyed protector by my side。

Until it happened again; the grim call of fate looking out at me through eyes of darkness, the great masters waiting with the power I needed, curses and promises in their hands。

It was time to make another deal。

It was time to play their game in earnest。

Book 2 in the Tempest of Shadows series。 Over 105,000 words。

This is a slow burn with DARK themes, unwilling anti-heroes, and one hell of a kick-ass heroine woven through a rich fantasy setting。

A Tempest of Shadows by Jane Washington is the first book in the series。 Lavenia Lihl’s story starts off with a crashing beginning and an accidental fate which will change everything in her world。 This is a novel of power and prophecy, fate and heartache, debt and desire。 The five men (Vale – the Weaver, Fjor – the Inquisitor, Helki – the Warmaster, Andel – the Scholar and Vidrol – the King) that control Lavenia’s fate are potentially more wicked then initially thought。 Every moment she’s thrown A Tempest of Shadows by Jane Washington is the first book in the series。 Lavenia Lihl’s story starts off with a crashing beginning and an accidental fate which will change everything in her world。 This is a novel of power and prophecy, fate and heartache, debt and desire。 The five men (Vale – the Weaver, Fjor – the Inquisitor, Helki – the Warmaster, Andel – the Scholar and Vidrol – the King) that control Lavenia’s fate are potentially more wicked then initially thought。 Every moment she’s thrown another curve ball, which she either needs to catch or let fall, as she plays their game。 But her resilience and strength are growing, and she won’t be as easily manipulated。 Luckily she had one person on her side and that’s Calder – the Captain, but he’s been drawn into this game just as much as Lavenia’ has。 This is a level of writing I’ve not experienced before with Jane Washington’s stories。 I love the tale woven, and how each chapter unravels more of this fantasy world。 I also really loved how each chapter was named with a single word, which after reading the chapter you realised the connection。As mentioned in the blurb there are elements of dark scenes, readers should heed this warning as scenes might be triggering。 Favourite quote: “Keep your secrets…。。That is how women beat men。 They never know what we know until it’s too late。” 。。。more

This new series from Jane is phenomenal。 I’ve always loved Jane’s books。 They always teach me something about life that I need to know at the time im reading and she is one of the few authors I read and re-read over and over again。 This new series is going to be no different。 It is a re-read for sure。 Beautifully written, phenomenal characters, a world that grabs you and holds you and a storyline that has you hooked from the first page to the last。

A minor is placed into sexual situations with grown men who abuse her。 Okay let me explain。 In this book, it is very much like the United States where the age you officially become an adult is 18。 There is nothing said about the age of consent other than the author making sure to mention that children are special and are to be protected until they turn that magical age。 The main character is 17 when this all goes down, and she does turn 18 towards the end。 So i can only assume that this girl is A minor is placed into sexual situations with grown men who abuse her。 Okay let me explain。 In this book, it is very much like the United States where the age you officially become an adult is 18。 There is nothing said about the age of consent other than the author making sure to mention that children are special and are to be protected until they turn that magical age。 The main character is 17 when this all goes down, and she does turn 18 towards the end。 So i can only assume that this girl is considered a child by the society she lives in。 Either way, its creepy。 The five men who are her captors and tormentors have to be at least 20 years older than her (its mentioned later in the books that they were searching for her for years and by that time they were considered to be these professional masters。 I can't see anyone being a master of anything under the age of 20), or even perhaps they are immortal gods who are ageless。。。 I have no idea。 There isn't a whole lot of information and fitting with the theme of the of the book things are just brushed away and not explained properly。 Its like the author wants to leave the bulk of the story up to your own interpretation。 There is very little character development。 Within the first few chapters this 17 year old girl is mutilated and raped while her mother watches。 This young girl then kills them both。 Later you come to find out that the five love interests orchestrated the entire event to happen。 You'd think that she'd would be pissed upon finding out or try to work past such an awful event。 But she doesn't。 Its brushed away。 It just doesn't matter to her or anyone else, not even her protector cares about her well being。 Its like she's just a hollow shell who has been so abused that she has shut down。 Girl you need therapy。 All the torture and bullying she is forced to endure is just accepted by her and everyone around her。 She is forced to dress in proactive clothing and is cut down by everyone weather it be by words or physical abuse。 She is placed in highly sexual situations with these men who say they hate her and find her disgusting all while her not even being considered an adult。 The only thing that makes sense to me is that she is being groomed by these older men or has already been by her mother and they are just continuing her edication。 All the while, these men are demanding she marry one of them when she becomes an adult。 Like what。This book is confusing, there are tons of inconsistencies that are never really addressed and for the most part I was confused for a great portion of this book and the second one。 The pacing is fast and slow at the same time and nothing really happens。 The climax of this book is just so shallow and is not properly given justice。 She is expected to become this amazing fighter in a few weeks and you're expected to believe that she becomes one。 It just seems impossible。 There is no way she can raise her first let alone beat a master。 I could go on about this book, but its just so forgettable and rightly so。 Please get out of my head, you don't even pay rent。 。。。more

Thought this was fairly enjoyable though I really hoped the main character would finally come out of her shell a bit more and stop taking everyone's bullshit, but I imagine it's a slower burn。 Not the most typical reverse harem that I have seen。 A bit of a "dark" reverse harem but said harem needs a bit more work。 I will continue on to see if my predictions of where this story is going turn out。 Thought this was fairly enjoyable though I really hoped the main character would finally come out of her shell a bit more and stop taking everyone's bullshit, but I imagine it's a slower burn。 Not the most typical reverse harem that I have seen。 A bit of a "dark" reverse harem but said harem needs a bit more work。 I will continue on to see if my predictions of where this story is going turn out。 。。。more

I personally couldn’t finish this。 There was just so much happening to the main character, abuse after abuse。 The language and world building was confusing at times。 It just wasn’t for me。

I'm sorry, but No!I've read 60% of this book by forcing myself hoping it gets better, but No! You don't have your main character get raped while a minor and a virgin, when she murders him and her mother who brought it on and participated by just standing there, she gets sentenced and marked as a murderer (they witness it), then belittled and tricked by evil men and women, always being a victim, I just CANNOT read anymore。 My heart bleeds while reading this! TornI usually love JW's works, but this one was so fun of angst, a hatred for being born, and burning anger at the world that it was hard to get a real grasp on any character to feel anything more than dislike for them。 There is some serious world-building, with heavy mythism, deeply veiled in magic and a way of life that it takes awhile to understand。 I'm not saying I don't like the book, just that there was so much time that had to be spent on the buildup that the cliffhanger ending left me wo TornI usually love JW's works, but this one was so fun of angst, a hatred for being born, and burning anger at the world that it was hard to get a real grasp on any character to feel anything more than dislike for them。 There is some serious world-building, with heavy mythism, deeply veiled in magic and a way of life that it takes awhile to understand。 I'm not saying I don't like the book, just that there was so much time that had to be spent on the buildup that the cliffhanger ending left me wondering what the heck happened and what it all means? How can you fight a "darkness"? I'm feeling very unequipped with how this story will go forward with what has been presented so far, but my faith in JW will have me moving to the next book hoping for more clarity。 。。。more

I have utterly mixed feelings about this book。 It has sooo much potential - the plot (or at least what I understood of it LOL), the worldbuilding (vague as fuck but interesting), the slow burn RH (not a lot of books out there in the RH genre that doesn't make me cringe instantly)。 The dark theme, the writing style I love all that。But。。。。This book lacks。。。 soul? It also lacks proper worldbuilding and proper explanation。 The story is very jumpy and half of the time I have to reread what happened because I didn't follow along。 It feels like it hasn't been proofread at all, at least with regards to pacing and character building, continuation etc (grammar, typos, punctuation are fine)。 The world is kind of intricate and the lack of proper explanation and lack of a glossary of sorts just makes it all very vague to me。Also the first book doesn't really hint at RH yet? I guess it's supposed to be the masters? Which feels odd to me because they are absolute assholes, I especially dislike the Warmaster and the King。 This book isn't really about character development, but about torment。 Lavenia is continuously spoken down to, harrassed and mistreated。 I'm not sure it can be justified, even if the masters did hint at that。 I'm all about anti hero love interests, but redeeming qualities are kind of necessary lol。 Haven't seen those yet。 There is zero nada compassion or any sort of empathy towards Lavenia (well, except for Calder, but he's not a master)。 I'm still interested to read the next book to see where the story is headed。 。。。more

This is a new author to me and I can honestly say, I really enjoyed her writing。 This is a book full of interesting characters, strange magic and whole lot of adventure。 Lavenia is a strong female character。 I really enjoyed the world building in this book, there are a lot of twists and turns in this book, never sure what is going to happen next。 I look forward to reading the next book in these series。 I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway and all opinions are my own。

I have always been in love with this author's concepts。 The way she utilizes all her words, creating this alternate-ish worlds。 The way she uses her words to paint vivid characters。 And this series was definitely not unlike her signature/brand。 Her poetry behind the prophecies was hands down amazing, too。I am salivating at the heroine's potential。 Not to say that she isn't amazing as she is right now。 But I'm your basic vengeful bwitch and I really, really want her to rain all the pain down on t I have always been in love with this author's concepts。 The way she utilizes all her words, creating this alternate-ish worlds。 The way she uses her words to paint vivid characters。 And this series was definitely not unlike her signature/brand。 Her poetry behind the prophecies was hands down amazing, too。I am salivating at the heroine's potential。 Not to say that she isn't amazing as she is right now。 But I'm your basic vengeful bwitch and I really, really want her to rain all the pain down on these meh-ish masters aka legendary assholes。 Huge shout out to Calder and his brand of oh-so-delicious angst。 Now this hero - I have fully signed up to endure all the heartbreak he would bring on this series。Safe to say that I'll be looking out for this series。 。。。more

I really wanted to love this new book by Jane Washington。。。 I really did。。。 but unfortunately this one just didn’t hit the mark for me。 I struggled getting into the story and almost gave up on numerous occasions, but I persevered and managed to finally finish it。I found the storyline confusing, with a lot of strange new made up words but with no reference dictionary to refer back for their meaning。 I also found it very difficult to warm up to the main characters in the storyline, especially the I really wanted to love this new book by Jane Washington。。。 I really did。。。 but unfortunately this one just didn’t hit the mark for me。 I struggled getting into the story and almost gave up on numerous occasions, but I persevered and managed to finally finish it。I found the storyline confusing, with a lot of strange new made up words but with no reference dictionary to refer back for their meaning。 I also found it very difficult to warm up to the main characters in the storyline, especially the five most powerful men in this fantasy realm。 They were boorish in their behaviour and put poor Lavinia through hell。 Most of the book was devoted to developing this brand new fantasy world, but there was nothing much in the way of romance for our heroine, so I’m not going to continue with this series。 。。。more
