Summary

A magical island。 A dangerous task。 A burning secret。

Linus Baker leads a quiet, solitary life。 At forty, he lives in a tiny house with a devious cat and his old records。 As a Case Worker at the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, he spends his days overseeing the well-being of children in government-sanctioned orphanages。

When Linus is unexpectedly summoned by Extremely Upper Management he's given a curious and highly classified assignment: travel to Marsyas Island Orphanage, where six dangerous children reside: a gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, an unidentifiable green blob, a were-Pomeranian, and the Antichrist。 Linus must set aside his fears and determine whether or not they’re likely to bring about the end of days。

But the children aren’t the only secret the island keeps。 Their caretaker is the charming and enigmatic Arthur Parnassus, who will do anything to keep his wards safe。 As Arthur and Linus grow closer, long-held secrets are exposed, and Linus must make a choice: destroy a home or watch the world burn。

An enchanting story, masterfully told, The House in the Cerulean Sea is about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place—and realizing that family is yours。

A nicely written love story with a twist。 Supported by the need for justice and the development of the main character。 Morals abounding, with a bit of magic and mythical beasts to support。

I loved the message behind this book。 It was a cute, heartwarming story with great insight behind what was actually written。

5 stars。 A book for those who don't mind a little magic in a book about identity, belonging, finding your place in the world。 It's a gentle book and suitable for teens to adults although our main narrator is a 40 year old man! Dear Linus - a rotund, solitary cat lover who always seems slightly out of his depth。Highly recommended - hope you love the characters as much as I did! 5 stars。 A book for those who don't mind a little magic in a book about identity, belonging, finding your place in the world。 It's a gentle book and suitable for teens to adults although our main narrator is a 40 year old man! One of the best books I’ve read in a long time! A very sweet and unexpected story。 Not my usual genre so I was pleasantly surprised。 The character development was incredible — you really got to know each one of them。 Please do yourself a favor and read this! 💛

Heartwarming in the best way!

It was really interesting。 I went in not having read the synopsis, I think going in blind helped with the surprise on this one。

10/5 stars。 Wow, what a book。 I haven't been so profoundly touched by anything I've read in an age。 I smiled, I laughed, I may have shed a tear or two (mostly happy ones though)。 I cannot recommend this beautiful book enough 💙 10/5 stars。 Wow, what a book。 I haven't been so profoundly touched by anything I've read in an age。 I smiled, I laughed, I may have shed a tear or two (mostly happy ones though)。 I cannot recommend this beautiful book enough 💙 。。。more

It was。。。 ok。 Probably a 3-star book because I wouldn't want to read it again but because T。J。 Klune is problematic, I deducted a star。 I didn't like Linus and didn't really start getting into the story until over 1/2 way through。 I'm also not overly fond of T。J。 Klune's writing style, and because of his experiences as a white man, even though he is gay and ace, definitely colored this story about discrimination。 It was。。。 ok。 Probably a 3-star book because I wouldn't want to read it again but because T。J。 Klune is problematic, I deducted a star。 I didn't like Linus and didn't really start getting into the story until over 1/2 way through。 I'm also not overly fond of T。J。 Klune's writing style, and because of his experiences as a white man, even though he is gay and ace, definitely colored this story about discrimination。 。。。more

I loved escaping to this fantastical world where my Harry-Potter-brain could thrive in a more socially progressive narrative。 I appreciated the discussions about preconceived notions depriving people who are different of relationships and opportunities and I felt deeply for the misunderstood children。 At times, the dialogue seemed a bit too scripted and proper, but for a YA novel I understand that sometimes things need to be spelled out。 Overall, pleasant

I really was unsure what rating I should give considering the plot。 It‘s a nice story but that‘s it… Nice。 But the ending really changed everything and I‘m happy I stayed till the end。 (Which I would have done anyways)

I really really wanted to love this one, but it was so predictable and kinda cheesy。 Yes, it’s a good message, but it just didn’t keep my interest and I didn’t feel for any of the characters。
