Summary

London’s Slough House is where disgraced MI5 operatives are reassigned to spend the rest of their spy careers pushing paper。 But when one of these “slow horses” is kidnapped by a former soldier bent on revenge, the agents must breach the defenses of Regent’s Park to steal valuable intel in exchange for their comrade’s safety。 The kidnapping is only the tip of the iceberg, however, as the agents uncover a larger web of intrigue that involves not only a group of private mercenaries but also the highest authorities in the Security Service。 After years spent as the lowest on the totem pole, the slow horses suddenly find themselves caught in the midst of a conspiracy that threatens not only the future of Slough House, but of MI5 itself。

Real Tigers is the third book in the Slough House series by prize-winning British author, Mick Herron。 The audio version is narrated by Sean Barrett。 Slough House, that “administrative oubliette” of the intelligence service, is a repository for inconvenient or incompetent spooks: the spies who have caused embarrassment by losing a gun runner on surveillance, have anger management issues, or managed to close down Kings Cross Station in a training exercise。 The current staff of seven “slow horses” Real Tigers is the third book in the Slough House series by prize-winning British author, Mick Herron。 The audio version is narrated by Sean Barrett。 Slough House, that “administrative oubliette” of the intelligence service, is a repository for inconvenient or incompetent spooks: the spies who have caused embarrassment by losing a gun runner on surveillance, have anger management issues, or managed to close down Kings Cross Station in a training exercise。 The current staff of seven “slow horses” occupy their time with tasks like comparing census results for anomalies, or checking passports issued during the ’81 Civil Service strike。But now, one of their number has been kidnapped, and the ransom involves access to classified files。 River Cartwright’s impulsive attempt to follow this demand sees him caught, interrogated and thoroughly beaten。 It turns out to be a busy twenty-four hours for the slow horses: they are assaulted, shot at, sacked, tasered, and threatened with closure。 Weapons include a broken CD, a Klieg light, a metal pipe, and even Jackson Lamb wields a gun。 Roderick Ho pauses in his deluded belief of virility, to actually leave the office and crash a double-decker bus。Once again, Herron gives the reader a fast-paced spy novel of a very different sort。 The premise is original, and the execution is inspired。 The characters are all credibly flawed, their dialogue is full of understated dry wit, and there is plenty of humour, most of it very black and very British, with an abundance of laugh out loud moments。 There are twists and red herrings and plenty of back-stabbing and the reader will find it hard not to cheer these misfits on as they do their best。 Readers will be pleased to learn there are two further volumes of this series for their entertainment and enjoyment。 More excellent British spy fiction! 。。。more

This series continues to get better with each book。 I'm absolutely ready to jump into the next one as soon as possible。 Herron has a great ability to keep the plot moving swiftly, steadily increasing tension, but never resorting to the cheap gimmicks of other thriller writers。 Often times, those other books lead me to gobble them up fast but always feel nauseated afterwards (suckered into finishing a crappy book)。 You must absolutely read this Slough House series in order, if for nothing else th This series continues to get better with each book。 I'm absolutely ready to jump into the next one as soon as possible。 Herron has a great ability to keep the plot moving swiftly, steadily increasing tension, but never resorting to the cheap gimmicks of other thriller writers。 Often times, those other books lead me to gobble them up fast but always feel nauseated afterwards (suckered into finishing a crappy book)。 You must absolutely read this Slough House series in order, if for nothing else than to follow the characters and let their stories play out。 These aren't in-depth character novels by any stretch of the imagination (there are too many characters for that) but Herron provides just enough to keep the reader engaged and caring。 。。。more

The best-paced and most readable of the Slough House books that I have read so far。 My previous criticisms still stand - the characters are just a bit too extreme making the book continually wobble between thriller and spoof。 It's amusing reading the passages about Peter Judd (aka Boris Johnson) especially as it was written pre-Brexit and before Johnson came to power。 These passages feel less like spoof and more like prophesy。 The final shoot-out scene is well written and gripping。 A good series The best-paced and most readable of the Slough House books that I have read so far。 My previous criticisms still stand - the characters are just a bit too extreme making the book continually wobble between thriller and spoof。 It's amusing reading the passages about Peter Judd (aka Boris Johnson) especially as it was written pre-Brexit and before Johnson came to power。 These passages feel less like spoof and more like prophesy。 The final shoot-out scene is well written and gripping。 A good series。 。。。more

4。5, but I don't know how to indicate that in the star system。 I discovered this series by accident and am now joyfully making my way through it。 Oh, how I love the wit and irony displayed throughout。 And the characters continue to charm, frustrate, and engage。 Mick Herron is a fabulous writer。 4。5, but I don't know how to indicate that in the star system。 I discovered this series by accident and am now joyfully making my way through it。 Oh, how I love the wit and irony displayed throughout。 And the characters continue to charm, frustrate, and engage。 Mick Herron is a fabulous writer。 。。。more

Such a fantastic series of books。 These just get better & better。 This series had been recommended to me by a friend who had been reading them all along。 The great thing about finding out about something later on is that you have a series of fantastic books to binge on。

Outstanding dialogue, with sharp humor。 The outer dialogue is enhanced by the inner monologue that accompanies it

I had left this third book in the series for several years, so it took me a bit to realize who were the good guys, and who were not。 Once I got into it though, it was a great read, with more excitement then the previous books (from what I remembered) and the Slough House members being more with it than expected。

Another Enjoyable Slough House read。 Hopefully we get to discover more about Jackson Lamb and his motives in the next few books。

I do love this spy series。 This entry starts more slowly than some, and some of the sardonic commentary on the characters and situations becomes a bit rote。 But it's still well-written, and things really take off later in the book: breathtaking, astonishing, and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny。 And it ends in a way that I feel the need to read the next installment right away! Here's a small sample, about Roddy Ho, the hacker of the raggedy Slow Horses:"Obedient to his satnav's demands, Roderick I do love this spy series。 This entry starts more slowly than some, and some of the sardonic commentary on the characters and situations becomes a bit rote。 But it's still well-written, and things really take off later in the book: breathtaking, astonishing, and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny。 And it ends in a way that I feel the need to read the next installment right away! Here's a small sample, about Roddy Ho, the hacker of the raggedy Slow Horses:"Obedient to his satnav's demands, Roderick Ho left the motorway at the next exit, and immediately the world became darker, quieter, the ambient hum of the mindless traffic fading to a mosquito buzz。。。。 Theoretically trees were a good thing, lungs of the planet, and Ho didn't mind them in parks, but out here they loomed too large, the way unleashed dogs acquired extra menace。 They cast their shadows as if it were only by their permission that traffic was allowed to pass beneath, and Roddy Ho felt what he'd have called a threat to his sense of self, were such terms available to him。 Instead, he simply noted that they were fucking creepy, and constituted a hazard。 He made a mental note to do something about them, saved it in the folder When I'm King, and checked satnav again。" 。。。more

Complicated spy story, funny and suspenseful。 I’ve read all the books in the series up to this point, and have just realized that all of the stories revolve around internal machinations of the security service management。 No terrorists, no foreign spies, just British spy versus British spy。

4。5 stars, I'm bloody obsessed with this series。 Herron is a phenomenal storyteller, the pace and plot of each installment unspooling with such frenzied precision that they're nearly impossible to put down。 And I love how each of the recurring characters become more complex - their backstories deepening, personal mysteries untangling - with every new volume。 I can't recommend this series more highly。 4。5 stars, I'm bloody obsessed with this series。 Herron is a phenomenal storyteller, the pace and plot of each installment unspooling with such frenzied precision that they're nearly impossible to put down。 And I love how each of the recurring characters become more complex - their backstories deepening, personal mysteries untangling - with every new volume。 I can't recommend this series more highly。 。。。more

Misfit spies make good in the endThe character insights of the residents of Slough House are one of the joys of this series。 The plot is almost incidental to these tales of the anti-James Bonds of British intelligence。 The major battles joined are not against international enemies but rather the domestic bureaucracy and coming to grips with your coworkers’ quirks and foibles。

Yuval Zukerman

I love the series and will go on to the next one。 Still, a battle scene occupying almost a third of the book, over the top gags - a bit out of time。 Fun, but。。。

The Slow Horses get caught in a war between MI5’s corrupt bureaucrats。My audio edition was about 11 hours long。 A dead tree copy would be about 350 pages。 The original UK copyright was 2016。Mick Herron is a British mystery and thriller novelist。 He has about 20-books published, in two series and standalone。 This is the third book in his Slough House series。 This was the third book I’ve read by the author。 The last being the second book in the series Dead Lions (my review)。Reading this third The Slow Horses get caught in a war between MI5’s corrupt bureaucrats。My audio edition was about 11 hours long。 A dead tree copy would be about 350 pages。 The original UK copyright was 2016。Mick Herron is a British mystery and thriller novelist。 He has about 20-books published, in two series and standalone。 This is the third book in his Slough House series。 This was the third book I’ve read by the author。 The last being the second book in the series Dead Lions (my review)。Reading this third book confirms the broad themes of the series。 Slough House is an MI5 backwater where MI5 banishes unwanted employees to make them go away。 Contrary to the spy trope, Resignations Not Accepted, folks sent to Slough House are sent there to quit。 That some are either too ornery or deluded not to do so is a major theme of the series。 The principal characters at Slough House are: the mean-spirited, old warhorse, Jackson Lamb; the young scion of a MI5 service family River Cartwright; and Catherine Standish, the ex-alcoholic, Miss Moneypenny of the previous MI5 bureaucratic regime。 Herron also rotates around the other Slow Horses (Slough House exiles) to mix things up。 I like that Herron is not afraid to kill-off characters。In addition, every story has two (2), very old skool, intertwined plot lines that start separately, and converge at the end。 One of them is invariably the internal political conflicts of the corporately-styled MI5’s bureaucracy amongst themselves and Her Majesties government。 These can be as lethal as enemy action。 The other is typically, but not always an external threat to British security。 That these conflicts abet each other story-wise makes the series interesting。 From the sidelines, and the thick of it, Lamb makes the most of his collection of broken agents to preserve the nation, keep his charges as safe as possible, and maintain his isolated, position in the organization。 The minor Slow Horses have their demons and issues。 Almost all of them want to redeem themselves to The Service and become real operatives again。 (They don't get it。) The Slow Horses are in effect, Nominal Heroes。 Although, they generally rise to the occasion and outperform their apparatchik peers at MI5 HQ。 I greatly enjoyed the books in the series for their writing。 Its character driven with many POVs。 However, when listening to the stories, I continue to believe the cutting back and forth between the numerous, POV's to be confusing and needing work。 I also find it peculiar that Lamb is written in the 3rd person, while his minions are in the 1st person。 The series also uses the 3rd person omniscient POV。 I’m not sure whether I like its usage or not?The writing is also amusing-- its chock full of witty aphorisms。 Lamb's being particularly pungent。The upper echelons of MI5 have all crossed The Moral Event Horizon。 They’re all villains。 Interestingly, they're mostly all women。 Their infighting is a hindrance to the security of the nation。 Its also not petty。 In this story, Catherine Standish is kidnapped in a ploy by one MI5 bureaucrat to discredit her boss (also a woman)。 This draws in Lamb and the Slow Horses。 However, the kidnappers have a larger Scandalgate in mind。 The story was intelligent, and frequently amusing。 The intentionally, cruel, manipulating and revolting Lamb in contrast to the bureaucratically polished, cruel, manipulating, corporate-types at MI5’s London HQ is always good for a chuckle。 The spy craft was good。 The use of London geography was more limited in this story than others, but it was OK。 There was a field trip into what had to have been Surrey。 The exact location in Surrey was thoroughly obfuscated。 As the threads of the story play out, I was disappointed that Herron opted for an Ambiguous Ending。This was yet another story of Herron’s Slow Horses in conflict with MI5。 While this third book was interesting enough, I’m not certain if MI5 infighting is going to hold my interest for too many more books? 。。。more

Two things the Slow Horses books do well: keeping you guessing about where things are headed (Herron is one of the few people who can get away with occasionally lowering the stakes in a way that actually builds tension and keeps the premise intact), and capturing that feeling of what it's like to face workplace rejection。 uhh not that I would know。I love how the Horses really do live up to their reputations as fuckups。 The book would've been over in thirty pages if River Cartwright had just pick Two things the Slow Horses books do well: keeping you guessing about where things are headed (Herron is one of the few people who can get away with occasionally lowering the stakes in a way that actually builds tension and keeps the premise intact), and capturing that feeling of what it's like to face workplace rejection。 uhh not that I would know。I love how the Horses really do live up to their reputations as fuckups。 The book would've been over in thirty pages if River Cartwright had just picked up his cellphone after leaving the bridge。 But Marcus Longridge is the real winner in this book, repeatedly blowing off assignments to get ice cream or blow off steam at the gun range。 I think Roddy Ho, the antisocial hacker, is my favourite of the Slow Horses though。Also that recurring gag with Jackson Lamb and the scent of cheese, loved it。 。。。more

The third book of this series had the most uninteresting and a bit far-fetched mystery so far。 But that gets compensated since by now we’ve started loving the uniquely weird characters and their interactions。 And Herron’s one-liners are a class apart, generating a chuckle every time。

I very much enjoyed the first book in this series, could not get through the second--which I found to be quite boring--and am pleased that this book more closely resembles the first book。 An odd group of disgraced spooks at Slough House, run by Jackson Lamb who is quite a disagreeable character but who does protect his "slow horses"。 I very much enjoyed the first book in this series, could not get through the second--which I found to be quite boring--and am pleased that this book more closely resembles the first book。 An odd group of disgraced spooks at Slough House, run by Jackson Lamb who is quite a disagreeable character but who does protect his "slow horses"。 。。。more

I discovered Mick Herron's "Slough House" series when I heard an NPR reviewer call Herron the best writer of spy novels since John Le Carre。 I don't know about that, and in any case Herron, although presumably in some sort of debt to George Smiley's creator, is entirely his own man in the the first three entries in the series I've now read。 Like Le Carre, he has a distinctive, strongly assured narrative voice - one that leans heavily on Dickension description (sometimes garrulously so), rather t I discovered Mick Herron's "Slough House" series when I heard an NPR reviewer call Herron the best writer of spy novels since John Le Carre。 I don't know about that, and in any case Herron, although presumably in some sort of debt to George Smiley's creator, is entirely his own man in the the first three entries in the series I've now read。 Like Le Carre, he has a distinctive, strongly assured narrative voice - one that leans heavily on Dickension description (sometimes garrulously so), rather than on the older writer's mordant, high table ironies。 Although the plots are meticulously laid out - juggled would be more apt -black humor is the presiding element, applied most lavishly to the principal recurring character, the irrepressibly awful, but ultimately true-blue spymaster-in-decline, Jackson Lamb。 Slough House is MI5's dustbin, where disgraced spooks are sent to spend their terminal Service days doing meaningless bureaucratic paper pushing as far removed from any derring-do as possible。 But derring-do somehow finds them and in antic, often thrilling fashion they more or less rise to the occasion。 "Real Tigers," number three in the series, is even better than the first two, which is saying a lot。 This is potentially addictive stuff - twisty and tart at tamarind。 And unlike anything by Le Carre, oddly buoyant。 。。。more
