Summary

At once a style guide, an inspirational tome, and a how-to volume on creating one's home, this book will serve as a go-to reference for all those seeking to spur their own creativity as they embark on the creation of home。 When Diane Keaton decided that she wanted to build her own home from the ground up, she took the advice of her dear friend, film director Nancy Meyers, and took to the boards of Pinterest to find inspiration。 There she discovered the practical and the fantastical, elements and styles long adored and ones that she never knew she was drawn to。 Keaton's dream house was officially under way and this book that resulted is a compelling account of her that house, from idea to realization in brick, stone, and wood。

The House that Pinterest Built defines what home and house mean to the celebrated movie star, who is known for her love affair with houses and design。 Filled with ideas that reveal a personal yet engaging aesthetic, this volume includes compelling photos from Keaton's past homes and those she admires, as well as a multitude of details from every corner of those spaces and objects that excite and inspire the house designer and dreamer--dramatic staircases and magical light fixtures, film stills and book covers, pottery and art--drawn from the visual treasure trove known as Pinterest and Keaton's private collection, as she creates and designs her newest house。
Rich imagery is accompanied by Keaton's ideas for selecting furniture, kitchen layout, and bedroom design; she talks about the importance of lighting in the bathroom and why the living room needs to be reimagined。 Beyond the interior, she explores curb appeal and environmental sensitivity, always with an eye to making home the way it should be--a place of tranquility, a place where one is restored and where one returns to dream again and again。 The book culminates in the dream realized, the house she has imagined, designed, and made, now shared with the world for the first time in all-new photography。

"If you want to explore。 If you love to see。 If you're looking to look; this book is an example of a home made from the gifts of other people's addictive yearnings for the perfect home, with the perfect landscape and the perfect interior。 It illustrates my choices of your choices。 Who knows, you might find one of your pins here。 You might smile。 You might shake your head and say, 'This isn't what I had in mind。' You might think: 'Hey that's my kitchen。 She copied my kitchen。' But the truth is, as much as I tried, I could never entirely recreate the light filled photograph of a kitchen that led the way to the journey that brought me here。 No one can。" - Diane Keaton

Actress Diane Keaton decided to build her own house from scratch because she couldn't find exactly what she wanted。 A lot of her inspiration came from the online site Pinterest, where she found pictures of doors, ladders, people's work spaces, beds, living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, etc。Mostly pictures with minimal text。 Lots of solid black pages to take up space in the book。 Announcing each section took up a 2-page spread: the word BED took the whole 2 pages, so did BATH。 Her taste is certainl Actress Diane Keaton decided to build her own house from scratch because she couldn't find exactly what she wanted。 A lot of her inspiration came from the online site Pinterest, where she found pictures of doors, ladders, people's work spaces, beds, living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, etc。Mostly pictures with minimal text。 Lots of solid black pages to take up space in the book。 Announcing each section took up a 2-page spread: the word BED took the whole 2 pages, so did BATH。 Her taste is certainly not mine, too industrial, especially on the lighting。 Very little warmth here except for the expanses of brick and the fireplace。 A few rugs。 Not cozy at all, at least not to me。 Huge coffee table, big enough for a tall man to lie down on with plenty of space around him。 I like the reclaimed wood。 I wonder why she needed 8,000 square feet of space in a house for herself and her two children, one of whom doesn't actually live with her now。Very little says "I want this" to me。Interesting, but not a book that most people will want to buy, just get it from the library as I did。 Very fast read because of the minimal text。 Unless you care to study the pictures more than I did。 The overall impression of the book is black-and-white, even though it isn't。 Very little real color。 。。。more

A cool photography book by Diane Keaton about a three year journey building her own dream house。 In Brentwood California, she bought land and began to design her house with other designers。 She found her ideas on Pinterest and then began planning。 Of course her architects had to get her adjust to reality and what she found in Pinterest。 These photographs the stark and the color scheme is black and white。 Very interesting。 Was glad I found this book。

Well I was a tad disappointed, I didn't expect it all to be in black and white - hardly any colour in her decorating style and the pics that Diane pinned that were published in the book。 Enjoyed Diane's take on the different areas of the house, but it looks so uncomfortable, would have loved to see more people friendly sofas, chairs。 My favourite room was the library in the living room。 Well I was a tad disappointed, I didn't expect it all to be in black and white - hardly any colour in her decorating style and the pics that Diane pinned that were published in the book。 Enjoyed Diane's take on the different areas of the house, but it looks so uncomfortable, would have loved to see more people friendly sofas, chairs。 My favourite room was the library in the living room。 。。。more

Good gracious, the description of this book here on Goodreads led me to expect something else so entirely, I barely know what to say。 If you want to look at a thousand pictures of dreary, overly stylized and impersonal spaces reminiscent of delapidated farms, industrial sites and state hospitals for the criminally insane--this is definitely the book for you。I guess I was led astray by visions of Annie Hall--unfair to Keaton since Annie is a character and not the actor herself--and therefore I ex Good gracious, the description of this book here on Goodreads led me to expect something else so entirely, I barely know what to say。 If you want to look at a thousand pictures of dreary, overly stylized and impersonal spaces reminiscent of delapidated farms, industrial sites and state hospitals for the criminally insane--this is definitely the book for you。I guess I was led astray by visions of Annie Hall--unfair to Keaton since Annie is a character and not the actor herself--and therefore I expected I don't know, colorful or idiosyncratic spaces that said something about the designer/inhabitant other than "I like Pinterest and I like stark black and white contrasts with some California stuff thrown in"。So bizarre that the book is referred to as "a style guide and a how-to volume", yet the presentation of images is so blocky and disconnected from any information one might use "how-to"。 Copyright 2017, I'd be surprised if Keaton's home still looks like this--it seems like it would be more fun to engage in the exercise of creating this thematic world than it would be to actually live in it, wondering all the while if there is something wrong with your rods and cones because the world appears to have lost all color。 。。。more

Incredible book design, stellar photography, and actually a very keen sense of minimalist design that I responded to。 However, I did find the accompanying text a bit disappointing, and narcissistic。 We can't all afford an 8,000 sq。 foot warehouse-sized home and a vast team of designers and architects to realize that dream。 Incredible book design, stellar photography, and actually a very keen sense of minimalist design that I responded to。 However, I did find the accompanying text a bit disappointing, and narcissistic。 We can't all afford an 8,000 sq。 foot warehouse-sized home and a vast team of designers and architects to realize that dream。 。。。more

What a weird book。 I didn't know a thing about Diane Keaton before reading this, apart from vaguely recognizing the name, and now I know she's a complete weirdo。 This book wasn't at all what I expected。 I was surprised at how little pinterest actually factors into the book。 The first section of the book is her talking about her design style/process for each major room in the house and then showing various inspiration pictures for that room。 Her explanations though really focus much more on what What a weird book。 I didn't know a thing about Diane Keaton before reading this, apart from vaguely recognizing the name, and now I know she's a complete weirdo。 This book wasn't at all what I expected。 I was surprised at how little pinterest actually factors into the book。 The first section of the book is her talking about her design style/process for each major room in the house and then showing various inspiration pictures for that room。 Her explanations though really focus much more on what she considers important for each room, and then her talking about how she pinned lots of pics about it。 Frankly, if she left pinterest entirely out of the book, it really wouldn't change much。 I realize this is a coffee table book so the minimal text probably didn't get a lot of attention, but if you're going to title your book "The House That Pinterest Built" maybe you should spend more time describing how you went from pinning pics of pretty bathrooms to actually designing a bathroom。 The second section shows her actual home, and is opened with a couple pages in which she name-drops every single architect, designer, contractor, landscaper, etc who worked on the home over the apparently 3 years it took to build (which seems LUDICROUS to me)。 You then get to look through page after page of pictures of the ugliest home in all of California。 Holy hell it is so damn ugly。 It is ugly on the outside and it is ugly on the inside。 And she doesn't have a single thing in her home that is not black, white, or brown。 It's so sparse too! I get minimalism, but why build such a large home if you're going to leave all the rooms practically empty? The absolutely kicker is that the last two pages of the book are quotations of random people who delivered packages or that she overheard walking by saying really insulting things about it like, "No one lives here right?" "Is this a museum?" "Does anyone live here? It's so minimally decorated"。 Weird flex but ok。 。。。more

An oversized Rizzoli art book by Diane Keaton regarding how she used Pinterest to store ideas for the first home she built "from the ground up。" (Note: she is known for renovations。) She has some good ideas (but pretty well known) on how to use Pinterest, but her tastes are so very specific; i。e。 industrial steam punk gears and wheels。 She has quotes in the back on the book where people thought it was a winery, empty, etc。 anything but a home。 Most of the book consists of images Keaton bookmarke An oversized Rizzoli art book by Diane Keaton regarding how she used Pinterest to store ideas for the first home she built "from the ground up。" (Note: she is known for renovations。) She has some good ideas (but pretty well known) on how to use Pinterest, but her tastes are so very specific; i。e。 industrial steam punk gears and wheels。 She has quotes in the back on the book where people thought it was a winery, empty, etc。 anything but a home。 Most of the book consists of images Keaton bookmarked for her projects with a very small section in the back for how her house turned out。 Lucky her to have the money to indulge such tastes。 。。。more

The book is pretty abstract。 As far as basing a house on a zillion pins, you probably don't want to try this at home。 It seems like you would end up paying your architect and others a lot more to design something this way because of many hours of winnowing through "inspiration"。 The aesthetic is so industrial, the home reads like a commercial space。 Though it is instagram friendly。 Which isn't exactly a compliment。 I'm wondering if part of the point of the book is where do the pins end and the h The book is pretty abstract。 As far as basing a house on a zillion pins, you probably don't want to try this at home。 It seems like you would end up paying your architect and others a lot more to design something this way because of many hours of winnowing through "inspiration"。 The aesthetic is so industrial, the home reads like a commercial space。 Though it is instagram friendly。 Which isn't exactly a compliment。 I'm wondering if part of the point of the book is where do the pins end and the home begin。 So I give it some credit for an interesting concept, though the house doesn't seem very livable。 I'm much younger than she is。 I don't think I'd be using so many ladders in my design at 72! 。。。more

Great concept but I was underwhelmed。 The color palette throughout the book felt oppressive。

Coffee table size (this is a hefty book!) Beautiful though rather stark photos, a minimalist house design and minimal text, but an interesting journey and a story of a determined woman building a dream house。

Nancy

This was an odd book。 While it was moderately interesting seeing Keaton’s picks, But The book lacked some good photos of what the finished house looked like。 Close-ups aren’t what you want to see; wide angle shots show the entire room。 I resorted to Google for better images。

Though the photos are inspiring, don’t skip the text! Keaton offers good insight into the functions of a home, such as making bedrooms relaxing or allowing living spaces to be true living rooms and not showcases。 She’s an engaging writer。

The House that Interest Built is nothing but a collection of photos that inspired Keaton to build a monstrous 8,000sq ft house within a three year span。 More than half through the book, page 158 to be exact, we finally glimpse the inside of her home。 The most interesting bit is her kitchen which has touches of country。 The rest is minimally colored and designed verging on austere。

To each his own I always say! This is the coffee table book of Diane Keaton building her Pinterst boards in order to build her dream house。 We see pins she likes and then at the end of the book, we see her house。 I love the idea of this book - but oh the house。 I absolutely hated the house。 It is like an old factory that was turned into a house with no warmth whatsoever。 I hope it was staged - where are the things that make a home a home?
