Summary

Honeybees make decisions collectively--and democratically。 Every year, faced with the life-or-death problem of choosing and traveling to a new home, honeybees stake everything on a process that includes collective fact-finding, vigorous debate, and consensus building。 In fact, as world-renowned animal behaviorist Thomas Seeley reveals, these incredible insects have much to teach us when it comes to collective wisdom and effective decision making。 A remarkable and richly illustrated account of scientific discovery, Honeybee Democracy brings together, for the first time, decades of Seeley's pioneering research to tell the amazing story of house hunting and democratic debate among the honeybees。

In the late spring and early summer, as a bee colony becomes overcrowded, a third of the hive stays behind and rears a new queen, while a swarm of thousands departs with the old queen to produce a daughter colony。 Seeley describes how these bees evaluate potential nest sites, advertise their discoveries to one another, engage in open deliberation, choose a final site, and navigate together--as a swirling cloud of bees--to their new home。 Seeley investigates how evolution has honed the decision-making methods of honeybees over millions of years, and he considers similarities between the ways that bee swarms and primate brains process information。 He concludes that what works well for bees can also work well for people: any decision-making group should consist of individuals with shared interests and mutual respect, a leader's influence should be minimized, debate should be relied upon, diverse solutions should be sought, and the majority should be counted on for a dependable resolution。

An impressive exploration of animal behavior, Honeybee Democracy shows that decision-making groups, whether honeybee or human, can be smarter than even the smartest individuals in them。

Honeybee Democracy provides an incredibly thorough look into the world of honeybees and their decision making process。 It's impressive to read about the intricate ways honeybees work to decide when to leave a hive and where to establish a new residence。 I admire the patience (and courage) of researchers to dedicate themselves to unlocking the mysteries of honeybees and to apply those lessons to the human world。 Honeybee Democracy provides an incredibly thorough look into the world of honeybees and their decision making process。 It's impressive to read about the intricate ways honeybees work to decide when to leave a hive and where to establish a new residence。 I admire the patience (and courage) of researchers to dedicate themselves to unlocking the mysteries of honeybees and to apply those lessons to the human world。 。。。more

This book is honestly like a lay-friendly version of a review paper。 Which, incidentally, I am here for! Because review papers aren't generally allowed to bring in half as much personality, or fun diagrams, it is a lot more interesting to read than, say, an overview of the history of research into how honeybees select nesting sites。 (I will admit the ending - relating it back to lessons for humans - feels a tacked on。 But hey。 If this is what it takes to give me books by super enthusiastic scien This book is honestly like a lay-friendly version of a review paper。 Which, incidentally, I am here for! A delightful book about honeybee behavior。 I highly recommend if you enjoy pop sci or nature reading。

A interesting read about how intelligence can arise from simple parts and patterns。 This book follows Seeley's life work as a scientist as he investigates the complexity and skill of how bees democratically choose a location for a new hive。 The book is slowed by the heavy sharing of his statistics and methodology, but elevated when the lessons of bee democracy are applied to how the human mind and human societies make decisions as well。 A interesting read about how intelligence can arise from simple parts and patterns。 This book follows Seeley's life work as a scientist as he investigates the complexity and skill of how bees democratically choose a location for a new hive。 The book is slowed by the heavy sharing of his statistics and methodology, but elevated when the lessons of bee democracy are applied to how the human mind and human societies make decisions as well。 。。。more

Great book for Apis Melifera lovers! Starting with the pioneers of honeybees researcers Karl von Frisch and Martin Lindauer, the book is a smooth journey throughout the amazing bees society and the perfect lesson for community living, the ideal example for human society as well。

3。5 Rounding Up。 The waggle dance as voting process for honeybees is so fascinating and I was really interested in the subject matter, but I really struggled to get into this book。 Honeybee Democracy was highly recommended by the beekeeping course I took, but it ended up being the fourth book about bees I read in quick succession, so that could be a factor, but I thought the writing was much less engaging than it could have been。 I would have led with the story more and then gotten into the scie 3。5 Rounding Up。 The waggle dance as voting process for honeybees is so fascinating and I was really interested in the subject matter, but I really struggled to get into this book。 Honeybee Democracy was highly recommended by the beekeeping course I took, but it ended up being the fourth book about bees I read in quick succession, so that could be a factor, but I thought the writing was much less engaging than it could have been。 I would have led with the story more and then gotten into the science, but instead, it reads like a science report that gets into the drama of the direct democracy of honeybees。 In short, long on the academic aspect, fantastic information, but I would have leaned into the drama of the bees a bit more。 。。。more

Seeley goes into a lot of specifics。 This seems to be his style, when he writes a book it is very in-depth on the information and focused on the topic。 I would recommend to a beekeeper that has an interest in expanding knowledge and years of experience。

This book is a rare gem。 It is simultaneously interesting in a natural science and political science way。 Especially now, when we're forced to confront the failings of the US political system, there's a lot of food for thought in this。 This book is a rare gem。 It is simultaneously interesting in a natural science and political science way。 Especially now, when we're forced to confront the failings of the US political system, there's a lot of food for thought in this。 。。。more

Beautiful work, mostly empirical in nature, Seeley explains the phenomenon of bees dancing (democratically!) to come to a collective consensus on where their new hive should be when it’s time for them to move。 The book ends on a nice note about how human group decision-making processes can be improved。Also an interesting thing in the book is that the author help solve a small Cold War crisis moment: Yellow Rain。 In 1981 US Secretary of State Alexander Haig (Reagan Administration) accused the Sov Beautiful work, mostly empirical in nature, Seeley explains the phenomenon of bees dancing (democratically!) to come to a collective consensus on where their new hive should be when it’s time for them to move。 The book ends on a nice note about how human group decision-making processes can be improved。Also an interesting thing in the book is that the author help solve a small Cold War crisis moment: Yellow Rain。 In 1981 US Secretary of State Alexander Haig (Reagan Administration) accused the Soviet Union of supplying Communist Laos and Kampuchea with chemical weapons to fight insurgents based on finding yellow liquid falling from planes, turns out it was honeybee poop and not T-2 Mycotoxin。 To this day the US hasn’t taken back this accusation。 。。。more

We can learn a lot from the democratic decision-making process of honeybees。“Every year, two-thirds of the honeybees in a swarm will leave their home and spend a few days in a tree。 Meanwhile, an intrepid group of scout bees will conduct a thorough evaluation of potential new homes in the vicinity。 The careful and effective process that honeybees have evolved enables them to almost always make the right choice – and it’s a process that could serve as a model for good decision-making to us all。”

Very cool and informative book about bees - the insects that "make our world go round" - written in 2010 by Cornell University's bee expert and biology professor。 You will learn how the bees decide on their nesting spots and how they communicate with each other。 Their behavior is much more interesting than I initially thought and can indeed be compared to a democracy。 Very cool and informative book about bees - the insects that "make our world go round" - written in 2010 by Cornell University's bee expert and biology professor。 You will learn how the bees decide on their nesting spots and how they communicate with each other。 Their behavior is much more interesting than I initially thought and can indeed be compared to a democracy。 。。。more
