Summary

A beautifully illustrated edition of the New York Times bestselling classic, timed to celebrate the pivotal 42nd anniversary of the original publication--with never-before-seen illustrations by award winner Chris Riddell

Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor。

Together, this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by a galaxyful of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox--the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian (formerly Tricia McMillan), Zaphod's girlfriend, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; and Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he's bought over the years。

Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? For all the answers, stick your thumb to the stars!

Somehow, I made it through nearly four decades of life without reading this classic novel。 We'll, I have done so at long last!Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a frolicksome nonsense book full of witty British spoof after the fashion of Monty Python and Discworld。 It is richly imaginative, absurdist, and consistently extremely wry。 I am not always the most enthusiastic connoisseur of absurdist humor, generally preferring something more caustic, but I can certainly appreciate this most distinct Somehow, I made it through nearly four decades of life without reading this classic novel。 We'll, I have done so at long last!Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a frolicksome nonsense book full of witty British spoof after the fashion of Monty Python and Discworld。 It is richly imaginative, absurdist, and consistently extremely wry。 I am not always the most enthusiastic connoisseur of absurdist humor, generally preferring something more caustic, but I can certainly appreciate this most distinctive British pastime when I'm in the mood, and Hitchhiker's Guide is rich stuff in the classic fashion。 Unlike Pratchett's Discworld, which really does satirize the fantasy genre, Hitchhiker's Guide seems generally inclined to harness science fiction as a tool for satirizing modern society and philosophy of life, and some of its jokes and meanderings really do achieve lol status。With the important caveat that this sort of humor isn't apt to be everyone's cup of tea, I think Hitchhiker's Guide is a great novel, quite worthy of its immense Fandom and reputation。 。。。more

Funny and creative。 And the narration on this is fantastic。 Also, some great examples of where the science fiction of the past predicts (some) of the innovations of the future。

I’m almost sure that I read this book soon after it was published in 1979, but I didn’t remember the story, which was based on the author’s BBC radio series。 So I thought it would be fun to be reintroduced to it, and it was。 The Hitchhiker’s Guide is a humorous romp through space。 It begins when Arthur Dent is taken from Earth, just before it is destroyed, and it follows his various adventures through the galaxies。I listened to the inimitable Stephen Fry’s narration, which was excellent。 Althoug I’m almost sure that I read this book soon after it was published in 1979, but I didn’t remember the story, which was based on the author’s BBC radio series。 So I thought it would be fun to be reintroduced to it, and it was。 The Hitchhiker’s Guide is a humorous romp through space。 It begins when Arthur Dent is taken from Earth, just before it is destroyed, and it follows his various adventures through the galaxies。I listened to the inimitable Stephen Fry’s narration, which was excellent。 Although I generally dislike humorous novels, this one gave me many chuckles。 The beginning was delightful and then the story line slowed down a bit and I had to listen more carefully。 I loved the name and character of Zaphod Beeblebrox。 The Hitchhiker’s Guide was a good audio choice for a long summer drive through the mountains。This audio book reminded me of We Are Legion (We Are Bob) by Dennis E。 Taylor as both are crazy and imaginative space travel books。 。。。more

Not surprisingly, I didn’t find this quite as witty as I did when I was thirteen。 Still, it’s a fun read。

Absurd and queer* and an absolute new favourite。 Well, not a "This is the best book in the universe" or "This is absolute perfection in words" kind of a favourite。 More so the 4。5-stars "Oh, you wanted a sci-fi recommendation? Well, here you go。 Now devour it。" kind of favourite。 The humour in this book could be the definition of my humour。 So many brilliant moments and scenes from which I underlined the shit out of。 And then we have the characters。 I adored absolutely all of them。 They, togethe Absurd and queer* and an absolute new favourite。 Well, not a "This is the best book in the universe" or "This is absolute perfection in words" kind of a favourite。 More so the 4。5-stars "Oh, you wanted a sci-fi recommendation? Well, here you go。 Now devour it。" kind of favourite。 The humour in this book could be the definition of my humour。 So many brilliant moments and scenes from which I underlined the shit out of。 And then we have the characters。 I adored absolutely all of them。 They, together with the humour, was what made this book。 Which is also exactly why I understand how this can easily be a miss for some。 If you're not into absurdist fiction and frankly silly humour, I don't see how you're gonna like this。Also, I thought the dialogue is absolutely brilliant, and I mean it's also very tied to the humour and the characters。 These characters are honestly my life。 And none more so than Zaphod bloody Beeblebrox。 I honestly can't say when is the last time I've related this hard to a character, and I don't even wanna know what that says about me as a person。 God, he's just the best。The reason why this was a 4。5-star for me, rather than a full 5-star, is the fact that the plot is not exactly 10/10。 First, it moves a bit slow, and then at some points, it feels a bit rushed。 Nothing that really bothered me, but just something that doesn't allow me to give it full 5-star。 The book is still brilliant。Anyways, I can't believe this lay on the shelf for over a year before I finally read it。 It's definitely a new favourite in the sci-fi genre, and I can't wait to read the rest of Adams' works。 (A year later on reread, this is still simply my favourite scifi book so far。 I just love it to the end of the universe。)*To note, I meant queer as in odd and not LGBTQ+, altho Zaphod is Bi (or Pan or Omni or in other words would simply do anything that moves) and I take no criticism on that statement。 。。。more

Fun! Fun! Fun! I really enjoyed the audio version of this book! Stephen Frye traps your attention and keeps your laughter flowing with his narration。 All characters receive a different voice/interpretation - not that hard to follow。 The story itself (by Douglas Adams) is very entertaining。 I love an underdog, and Arthur is the perfect one: clumsy, no-social skills, a very human character who wishes to be kind (but sometimes isn't quite sure how much to risk)。 BTW, the book is much better than th Fun! Woah this was so weird。 A bit too all over the place for my liking, but there were some fun philosophical bits throughout。

3,5, I think? This was the weirdest shit。 It was funny and entertaining but it was too confusing for me to read as an audiobook。 I found myself not really paying attention and therefore becoming even more confused。 But a classic for a reason and probably the most unpredictable book I’ve ever read。

It's okay。 It's not great。 Wasn't really that funny to me, but it probably won't kill you to take a stab at it。 。 。 maybe you'll like as much as the 4 and 5 star people。 My sense of humor doesn't run in the same vein as the British, I'm much more dry, satiric, and sarcastic。 It doesn't really cut it as Science Fiction, but I've read plenty of Sci-Fi that was little more than light fantasy, so who cares? I think this is my fifth re-read of the book and as always it gave me a heady rush of joy and laughter。If mankind is ever wiped out, I hope a copy of this book survives and some random alien race find it。 First of all, they can use it as a manual for their interstellar travels。 Secondly, it perfectly encapsulates the sheer genius and absurdity of humans like nothing else。 That's a good way to remember humanity by。 I think this is my fifth re-read of the book and as always it gave me a heady rush of joy and laughter。If mankind is ever wiped out, I hope a copy of this book survives and some random alien race find it。 First of all, they can use it as a manual for their interstellar travels。 Secondly, it perfectly encapsulates the sheer genius and absurdity of humans like nothing else。 That's a good way to remember humanity by。 。。。more

A great comedic novel for young people to read。 I don't think I would re-read it again in my adulthood, but I am really glad that I experienced this at the right age to enjoy it。 The type of humor in Hitchhiker's Guide does not translate well to the medium of film, but they have made a few half bad attempts。 If you like sci-fi and you're in your late teens or early 20s, take some time to read this classic fiction novella。 It is such a skinny book and it will take you no time at all。 DON'T PANI A great comedic novel for young people to read。 I don't think I would re-read it again in my adulthood, but I am really glad that I experienced this at the right age to enjoy it。 The type of humor in Hitchhiker's Guide does not translate well to the medium of film, but they have made a few half bad attempts。 If you like sci-fi and you're in your late teens or early 20s, take some time to read this classic fiction novella。 It is such a skinny book and it will take you no time at all。 DON'T PANIC。 。。。more

A very well-written guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams。 Although I am not a dedicated fan of Sci-fi, this book is interesting enough to keep me turning the pages。 This book really amazes me for how great an human imagination can be 。。。。 well, even as far as 1971? I would say this book is so much better than the movie !
