Summary

A murder on the high seas。 A detective duo。 A demon who may or may not exist。

It's 1634 and Samuel Pipps, the world's greatest detective, is being transported to Amsterdam to be executed for a crime he may, or may not, have committed。 Travelling with him is his loyal bodyguard, Arent Hayes, who is determined to prove his friend innocent。

But no sooner are they out to sea than devilry begins to blight the voyage。 A twice-dead leper stalks the decks。 Strange symbols appear on the sails。 Livestock is slaughtered。

And then three passengers are marked for death, including Samuel。

Could a demon be responsible for their misfortunes?

With Pipps imprisoned, only Arent can solve a mystery that connects every passenger onboard。 A mystery that stretches back into their past and now threatens to sink the ship, killing everybody on board。

The breathtaking new novel from Stuart Turton, author of the The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, winner of the Costa Best First Novel Award。

Super confusing, very involved, and I had absolutely no idea what exactly was going on until the very last pages。 Excellent Mystery, Thriller !!

This was a fun follow-up to The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, though it takes quite a bit more to get into than Turton's debut。 Like Evelyn Hardcastle, this novel also features a small cast in a locked-room mystery—but this time, we are on a boat。 I did find guess at some parts of it, and some parts were a bit disingenuous to the spirit of a mystery novel (imo) but overall had fun。 Just wish there were less mentions of shitting。 Like。 Zero mentions, honestly。 Why did I need to read about it ev This was a fun follow-up to The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, though it takes quite a bit more to get into than Turton's debut。 Like Evelyn Hardcastle, this novel also features a small cast in a locked-room mystery—but this time, we are on a boat。 I did find guess at some parts of it, and some parts were a bit disingenuous to the spirit of a mystery novel (imo) but overall had fun。 Just wish there were less mentions of shitting。 Like。 Zero mentions, honestly。 Why did I need to read about it even once, let alone multiple times。 。。。more

Well written mystery without unnecessary cursing or sex。 A splash of witty dialogue throughout。 Seems perfect for a film adaptation。

I can’t say I enjoyed this book, but it was interesting and kept my interest right through。 I would have expected more time on the island, it seemed that they came to their conclusions very quickly, almost as though Stuart had run out of ideas and inclination to write more。 Pity that it ended so abruptly, but worth reading anyway。

A really enjoyable historical thriller。 I found the ending to be really frustrating but I like the story and build up。 I feel really invested and intrigued the whole time。

4。5/5 but on the high end!God, I know it's such a cliché but I absolutely have a type I love to read: I love a hulking, brooding man who's too big for doorways, takes an inhuman amount of beatings, and has a gentle devotion to those he's allied himself with。 Like Sigrud before him, Arent is a gem。 He's the big, muscley Watson to Sammy's Sherlock and I need more books featuring his type!image credit: @coelasquidOf note on the audiobook-- I read the book with the audiobook playing at the same time 4。5/5 but on the high end!God, I know it's such a cliché but I absolutely have a type I love to read: I love a hulking, brooding man who's too big for doorways, takes an inhuman amount of beatings, and has a gentle devotion to those he's allied himself with。 Like Sigrud before him, Arent is a gem。 He's the big, muscley Watson to Sammy's Sherlock and I need more books featuring his type!image credit: @coelasquidOf note on the audiobook-- I read the book with the audiobook playing at the same time。 The audiobook was overall good, but the narrator's choice of voices and delivery of spoken lines were not acting decisions I would've made; I found his portrayal of the female characters in particular to come across more vapid and grating than how I read the text。 ymmv 。。。more

*Shocked Pikachu face* I didn't see that ending coming。 I admit that several chapters in, I was thinking ehhhh, this feels like it'll be an all right mystery, but not much more, but by about the 1/3 mark, it really took off, and then we were all on a rollercoaster all the way till the closing paragraphs! It is so unfair that my favorite authors seem to have the fewest number of books。 And as I stated in this novel, mankind can withstand almost anything except unfairness。 In all seriousness, this book was amazing。 The atmosphere was electric, the characters will developed and believable, and the mystery enthralling。

Nick Phillips

A sort of Earth-311 Sherlock Holmes meets Black Sails in a twistingly plotted high seas mystery which is almost as classic as Turton’s first novel。Wonderful, and I cannot wait for his next book which apparently will be out in two years。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 3。5 stars; I liked Turton’s Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle better BUT there was a lot to like about this one。 Honesty I liked a lot of the characters, which had been a slight issue for me in Evelyn Hardcastle, and I especially liked Arent and Sara and I fully believed their love story, too。 Also, considering I NEVER read or watch anything set before like before the 20th century lol I really enjoyed this story! The ending kind of came too fast and I had to reread some explanations to be like “ 3。5 stars; I liked Turton’s Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle better BUT there was a lot to like about this one。 Honesty I liked a lot of the characters, which had been a slight issue for me in Evelyn Hardcastle, and I especially liked Arent and Sara and I fully believed their love story, too。 Also, considering I NEVER read or watch anything set before like before the 20th century lol I really enjoyed this story! Although I do have to say, the religion major in me was disappointed to it turn out that the “devil” and “demons” were just people。 The supernatural can be real。 We don’t have to always find a logical, reasonable explanation for it lol 。。。more

A period mystery thriller set on the claustrophic setting of a boat on an 8 month long crossing。 A warning right from the start that a demon stalks the ship。。。。 we do have a top detective on board but he is locked away。。。 so the passengers must try and solve the matter themselves。 We build up on existing and new relationships as we try to uncover the secrets and lies to get to the bottom of it all。 I loved our main group of characters and this book kept me guessing right to the end。 I enjoyed ev A period mystery thriller set on the claustrophic setting of a boat on an 8 month long crossing。 A warning right from the start that a demon stalks the ship。。。。 we do have a top detective on board but he is locked away。。。 so the passengers must try and solve the matter themselves。 We build up on existing and new relationships as we try to uncover the secrets and lies to get to the bottom of it all。 I loved our main group of characters and this book kept me guessing right to the end。 I enjoyed every step of the journey 。。。more

An interesting book。 A Sherlock Holmes knockoff set in the 1700s。 A good mystery, good pace and easy to read。

I had a hard time putting this book down。 From the beginning, it throws you into the story and never lets go。 It was definitely scary at times, especially when I read it at night。 As others have said, this book is a total trip。 I don't know how Stuart Turton comes up with all of this but I'm here for it。 Looking forward to his next book。 I had a hard time putting this book down。 From the beginning, it throws you into the story and never lets go。 It was definitely scary at times, especially when I read it at night。 As others have said, this book is a total trip。 I don't know how Stuart Turton comes up with all of this but I'm here for it。 Looking forward to his next book。 。。。more

4。 5 Stars Murder on the Orient Express or any novel for murder is a ocean liner or other enclosed conveyance。 This story, however, has several twists。 It takes place in the 1600 on a sailing ship returning to Amsterdam loaded with a treasure of spices and the devil may be one of the passengers。 Who will be the first to die?

Teresa Reid

Wow。 I love this author, but not in the typical way。 His books are not “easy reads”, but the payoffs are spectacular。 Give it a try!

Some clever mysteries and generally enjoyable, but I struggled to keep track of what was going on。 The book wasn’t absorbing enough, so I picked it up for small amounts of time, then couldn’t remember details necessary to appreciate the next bit - eg who knew what, if we’re still on the same day etc。

It was a bit slow to get into but then I was hooked! Even though the setting on a ship did not really appeal to me all that much I enjoyed the mystery immensely。 The ending left me a bit salty because I had expected something a little more complicated。Mr。 Sturton, about the next book you mentioned in your notes。。。 Where can I pre-order? :]

Great story。 Very catchy, but I didn't like the ending: everything was cleared so abruptly and too quickly for my taste。Dear author, you can't save them all。 It is not fair。 🤣😅 Great story。 Very catchy, but I didn't like the ending: everything was cleared so abruptly and too quickly for my taste。Dear author, you can't save them all。 It is not fair。 🤣😅 。。。more

I just put this book down and my mind's just blown。And in scrambles。And I'm speechless。The Devil and the Dark Water has a Sherlock Holmes-Escape Room vibe, where Watson is forced to take the lead, because the other one is imprisoned in a ship cell and therefore incapacitated。 Since Watson normally has different duties and is not as experienced in solving crimes, he needs and (fortunately) gets help from a few other characters。 In the story everyone has his/her own destined role to play, while st I just put this book down and my mind's just blown。And in scrambles。And I'm speechless。The Devil and the Dark Water has a Sherlock Holmes-Escape Room vibe, where Watson is forced to take the lead, because the other one is imprisoned in a ship cell and therefore incapacitated。 Since Watson normally has different duties and is not as experienced in solving crimes, he needs and (fortunately) gets help from a few other characters。 In the story everyone has his/her own destined role to play, while still having different desires, thought and unique personalities (which feel so damn real)。 It's impossible not to root for them and it's amazing to see them interact, part and come together again。Also, as a reader you are fed just enough riddles to keep you hooked, but not enough details for the suspense to abate。 Maybe some might call the book a slow-burner, but what it actually does is build up and keep a certain suspense level (it's all about the uncovering-process) and not letting loose until the anticipated climax。 After that you're just left open-mouthed and staggering。Doesn't matter how many crime or mystery novels you've read or how many connections you've managed to detect in this story (and let's be real, it feels amazing to predict something and be right!), you'll never guess all the secrets and events。 Or the ending。I can't imagine the amount of time and planning it must have taken to write this book。Props to Stuart Turton! I can't wait to see what he brings out next! 。。。more

Tra continui enigmi e depistaggi, in un’atmosfera altalenante tra superstizione e razionalità, questo romanzo l’ho trovato sempre più noioso e frustrante, oltre che davvero troppo cervellotico。

I love books that take place on the open seas。 It took me a bit to get into this book, but once I did, I had a difficult time putting it down。 I highly recommend this for anyone who loves Sherlock Holmes-esque mysteries, tales of the sea, and ragtag groups of people banding together。

This was a hoot to read! Very entertaining。
