I have been drawing all of my life。 The principles and skills presented seem to have come intuitively to me, but it was helpful to understand what I have been doing naturally。 That understanding has most definitely served me well。 My drawing has improved as I have consciously applied the principles and skills taught。I am convinced that anyone who wishes to learn to draw can do so by working through this book, chapter by chapter, exercise by exercise。
This book forces you to use your left side of the brain to learn to draw with the right side of the brain。 You would benefit more by getting the workbook that goes with this book and do all the exercises。

Silvia Boriani,
I absolutely love this book。 I consider it one of the best books to learn how to draw and see the world in a different way。 As an art teacher, I use many of the ideas presented in this book to teach my students how to represent and interpret reality。 It presents the ability to draw as a perception skill, which makes it much more approachable to those who always wanted but never thought it was possible to make art。This said, it isn't exactly a complete course on how to draw and paint, but a wonde I absolutely love this book。 I consider it one of the best books to learn how to draw and see the world in a different way。 As an art teacher, I use many of the ideas presented in this book to teach my students how to represent and interpret reality。 It presents the ability to draw as a perception skill, which makes it much more approachable to those who always wanted but never thought it was possible to make art。This said, it isn't exactly a complete course on how to draw and paint, but a wonderful and exciting entry door to the world of creativity and expression。 。。。more
Umide Sacoor Ahnemann,
One of the fundamental books in my library。 Not just a self-guide on how to draw, but a course on redesigning cognition itself, and the way we experience the world around us。 Might just be the shortest path to Nirvana。
Paul Molive,
These are the type of stories I love to read。 I hope I can see your work in NovelStar。 There are also a lot of talented writers in that platform。 You may check their group on Facebook。tttttttttttt
Ridhi Garg,
This book has the potential to change lives。 Not joking。 I have only worked through the first couple of chapters of this book, but with only that minimal amount of exposure, I have experienced rather astonishing changes。 I am a hopeless left-brainer, great with numbers but can't draw a decent stick-figure。 I had NEVER drawn anything that looked like the subject I was trying to draw。 I faithfully practiced the (almost ridiculously) simple exercises in the beginning lessons of this book。 I repeate This book has the potential to change lives。 Not joking。 I have only worked through the first couple of chapters of this book, but with only that minimal amount of exposure, I have experienced rather astonishing changes。 I am a hopeless left-brainer, great with numbers but can't draw a decent stick-figure。 I had NEVER drawn anything that looked like the subject I was trying to draw。 I faithfully practiced the (almost ridiculously) simple exercises in the beginning lessons of this book。 I repeated each exercise quite a bit more times than what was required, just to be sure I didn't miss anything。 I felt wonderful, but didn't think it meant anything until a few days later when I was sitting in on a very boring meeting and started doodling a picture of the face of one of the other people。 Shockingly, it was a very recognizable likeness that actually captured the expression on his face and even the texture of his hair。 If I can do it YOU CAN DO IT!! 。。。more
Igor Linares,
This is the best book you can have if you want to teach yourself how to draw form the beginning。Some other books gives you a guide on anatomy of humans or animals, others start by giving you the idea of dark and light: those are no guide for beginners on the art of drawing。 You must start by learning how to see, and Betty Edwards teaches you how。The exercises seems a little weird at the beginning but are very helpful when you finish。
Arun Shrivastava,
Not only a book about drawing, but it is also a book about living。 This brilliant approach to the teaching of drawing
Axir,
I picked up a very old edition, from when Betty still supported some beliefs about how the brain works, totally debunked nowadays (it is my understanding this has been addressed in newer editions)。 Regardless, I am just some chapters in and some exercises later and I can feel an improvement。
Kim,
Revolutionary for my artistic practice。
Dan Geiger,
If you want to get into a meditative state just pick up a pencil and draw with your opposite hand。
Kia Chuan,
Took me literally years of starts and stops and I thought I might never finish this, but I did。 Just an all-around amazing book that suited my approach: the idea that the learnings transcend the art of drawing, and that the hands-on exercises were interspersed between readings—so I felt like I was making progress even when I wasn’t drawing。 The instruction and exercises also consistently built my confidence as I could see with my own eyes the improvements that I’ve made。 10/10 would recommend to Took me literally years of starts and stops and I thought I might never finish this, but I did。 Just an all-around amazing book that suited my approach: the idea that the learnings transcend the art of drawing, and that the hands-on exercises were interspersed between readings—so I felt like I was making progress even when I wasn’t drawing。 The instruction and exercises also consistently built my confidence as I could see with my own eyes the improvements that I’ve made。 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking to pick up drawing or any illustrative art forms。 。。。more
Violetta,
This is ONLY suitable to complete novices that otherwise would never touch a pen to draw。 It's a good thing if more people feel compelled and encouraged to draw。 But this is it for the good things I have to say about this book。 For anybody interested in drawing in an artistic sense this book is a death sentence that will misguide you。 This is ONLY suitable to complete novices that otherwise would never touch a pen to draw。 It's a good thing if more people feel compelled and encouraged to draw。 But this is it for the good things I have to say about this book。 For anybody interested in drawing in an artistic sense this book is a death sentence that will misguide you。 。。。more

Since this is a textbook, reading it from cover to cover isn't really practical unless you're taking a class。 I had it when I went to school, and now basically use it for reference。 Since this is a textbook, reading it from cover to cover isn't really practical unless you're taking a class。 I had it when I went to school, and now basically use it for reference。 。。。more
Shaz,
Quite eye opening as to the logic behind drawing。 It does focus on observational drawing mostly, teaching you how to rewire your brain and learn a "right brained" way to draw better。The takeaway from this is that anyone can learn to do basic drawing, and that drawing is as hard as reading and writing, you just have to spend the time to learn。 Quite eye opening as to the logic behind drawing。 It does focus on observational drawing mostly, teaching you how to rewire your brain and learn a "right brained" way to draw better。The takeaway from this is that anyone can learn to do basic drawing, and that drawing is as hard as reading and writing, you just have to spend the time to learn。 。。。more

An essential read for anyone thinking about starting or restarting drawing。But pretty useful for those that are currently drawing。
