Summary

WARNING: LISTENING TO THIS TAPE WILL ONLY MAKE YOU WEEP。。。Dear Listener,

If you are looking for a story about cheerful youngsters spending a jolly time at boarding school, look elsewhere。 Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire are intelligent and resourceful children, and you might expect that they would do very well at school。

Don't。

For the Baudelaires, school turns out to be another miserable episode in their unlucky lives。 Truth be told, within the chapters that make up this dreadful story, the children will face snapping crabs, strict punishments, dripping fungus, comprehensive exams, violin recitals。 S。O。R。E。, and the metric system。

It is my solemn duty to stay up all night reading my history of these three hapless youngsters into a microphone, but you may be more comfortable getting a good night's sleep。 In that case, you should probably listen to something else。

With all due respect,

The adults in these books are so annoying I want to kill them。

The triplets。。。what a fascinating couple of people。 How fortunate it seemed when the Baudelaire orphans met these fellow orphans at such an unfortunate place。 Yet。。。the Baudelaires seem to carry catastrophe everywhere they go as they continue to destroy more lives。 That sounds harsh, but think about it! How many people have died? Lost their homes? Been kidnapped? All because of the Baudelaires。。。 it just goes to show how blessed so many of us are。

One of the better ones in the series so far。 Plus the story was more interesting this time。 They finally broke from the usually new terrible guardian who doesn't believe them, Count Olaf almost gets them, and then narrowly escapes。 This time, they had friends! I'm hoping this new plot line adds interest to the rest of the series, because yikes, 8 more books sounds very tedious。 The plus is that the 3 hour audiobooks had been perfect for road trips with my kids。 One of the better ones in the series so far。 Plus the story was more interesting this time。 They finally broke from the usually new terrible guardian who doesn't believe them, Count Olaf almost gets them, and then narrowly escapes。 This time, they had friends! Was it wise to binge all three books in one sitting? Probably not。 I’m not wise。 But this series is phenomenal! I remember not enjoying Tim Burton’s adaptation that much & it was bad of me to judge a series based on a movie。。。 yet again, I’m not wise 🥲+ what a cliffhanger! Now I have to wait for the rest of the books to arrive 😭 ++ also idk how to rate these below 5 stars? what do I base it on? which book had the most depressing plot? 😬🥴

In the fifth installment in the Baudelaire story, we find the three children at Prufrock Preparatory School。 Vice Principal Nero, a very bad violinist, forces the three children to live in a fungus-covered crab-infested shack called “The Orphan Shack” by Carmelita Spats (the self-proclaimed prettiest and nicest girl at Prufrock Prep)。 There’s triplets Isadora and Duncan Quagmire, Mr。 Ramora, Mrs。 Bass, plus Coach Genghis (AKA Count Olaf) and S。 O。 R。 E。 I'm not going to lie, this one was a littl In the fifth installment in the Baudelaire story, we find the three children at Prufrock Preparatory School。 Vice Principal Nero, a very bad violinist, forces the three children to live in a fungus-covered crab-infested shack called “The Orphan Shack” by Carmelita Spats (the self-proclaimed prettiest and nicest girl at Prufrock Prep)。 There’s triplets Isadora and Duncan Quagmire, Mr。 Ramora, Mrs。 Bass, plus Coach Genghis (AKA Count Olaf) and S。 O。 R。 E。 I'm not going to lie, this one was a little boring。 A lot happens, but it’s all a little boring。 I enjoyed the characters of Isadora and Duncan and I’m glad Snicket finally gave the three children some friends。 I was glad to finish this one。。。 Looking forward to the next one, Tim Curry’s back to reading the books。。。 。。。more

This is getting darker and makes me feel so uncomfortable。 What I’m happy about though is how the books are getting longer and longer!!

The Series of Unfortunate Events had, for four books, been remarkably unremarkable。 The stories were slightly interesting, and humor was comical, but the books failed to create a connected story, nor to be a masterpiece。This is where the masterpiece started。The VFD。 No other acronym ever sent such chills thru a child's back。 VFD。 More loved than SHEILD, more than the DA, more than LEPRECON。 So much mystery surrounds it。 So much horror。 So much intrigue。 While the Austere Academy is not the most The Series of Unfortunate Events had, for four books, been remarkably unremarkable。 The stories were slightly interesting, and humor was comical, but the books failed to create a connected story, nor to be a masterpiece。This is where the masterpiece started。The VFD。 No other acronym ever sent such chills thru a child's back。 VFD。 More loved than SHEILD, more than the DA, more than LEPRECON。 So much mystery surrounds it。 So much horror。 So much intrigue。 While the Austere Academy is not the most VFD heavy book in the series, it introduces the concept。 That I am thankful for。 。。。more

This one didn’t feel as formulaic as the previous books (which was turning into a bit of a pain) (again, probably because I’m reading these for the first time as an adult)。 The Quagmire triplets are the cutest sidekicks and I’m getting a kick out of Brett Helquist’s drawing of Nero playing violin - on the wrong shoulder and holding the bow the wrong way around (which definitely explains the dying/screeching cat sounds 😆)。 Also getting a kick out of the fact that he’ My fave of the series so far! Were their parents actually good people or just as bad as Count Olaf? Or were they good people and unfortunately ended up crossing paths and getting involved with Count Olaf, which led to their death? Also were the triplets' parents involved in the same things, which is why they also met the same type of death and the Baudelaire parents? So many questions, but I'm not completely sure I want the answers to them。。。Also, the adults are awful once again。 What's new? (I hate Vice Principal Nero and if it was up to me, someone would've gotten to punch him in the face) It's horrifying how apathetic adults are to the children's suffering。 。。。more

These adults are useless。I’m glad that the stakes are being raised and a mysterious element was added because it was starting to get repetitive。

The fifth in the Series of Unfortunate Events, this one introduces us to the two Quagmire triplets。 Another character is Carmelita Spats, who, unfortunately, reminded me a great deal of a girl that I knew when I was the age of the older Bauelaires。 I give the book 3 1/2 stars for being a fun read, plus 1/2 star for nostalgia。

So far my least favorite entry but still great, and funny, nonetheless。

Sometimes this book would just keep repeating itself, but other then that it was good。

Andrea

Why is nobody looking out for these children?? Everywhere they go, the adults are horrible or clueless or both。 Glad they made some friends。

Nina

Ta część jest jedną z tych, które mniej mi się podobały。。。 Czy tylko mnie irytuje Karmelita Plujko?!

Tori

Ahh。 Poor triplets! Poor siblings。 Ahhh。

3。5* The Austere Academy was a decent installment of this series following the Baudelaires。 It wasn’t my favorite setting, but it is an important book as it begins to lay out details that I’m sure will become relevant in future books。 I do find myself considering how unrealistic these situations are and how absolutely dumb the adults that the Baudelaires have to deal with are pretty frequently while reading。 But alas, it is fiction and meant to be exaggerated。 But to what extent? I also find some of these events described to be child abuse。 Yes it’s fictional, but in any real world scenario I have to hope that someone would come to these children’s aid。 Maybe I’m overthinking it, but some of these scenarios get really dark unexpectedly for a book that’s targeted toward younger audiences。 But I do think it’s important to have stories that display the darker side of life so maybe I’m overthinking that as well。 If I were a parent, I guess I’d like to know what sort of things were happening in the book so I could discuss it with my kid as they read the story。 These books were published before trigger warnings were a thing in books though。 Anyway, I’m rambling。 Back on track, this was a decent read。 I did like the introduction of the new characters that the Baudelaires can relate to。 It’s nice that someone in their life acts like they give a care about them。 Planning to continue the series soon。 。。。more
