After nearly ten years of daily comics, Bill Watterson hung up his pencil in 1995 and capped off his critically acclaimed strip, Calvin & Hobbes。 Ten years later, Watterson worked with Andrews McNeel Publishing to put out a complete box set (three volumes in hardback / four in paperback)。 The result is a gorgeous collection worthy of one of the best, most consistent strips around。Calvin & Hobbes began when I was just two years old and ended just before I turned twelve, so given that I wasn’t gra After nearly ten years of daily comics, Bill Watterson hung up his pencil in 1995 and capped off his critically acclaimed strip, Calvin & Hobbes。 Ten years later, Watterson worked with Andrews McNeel Publishing to put out a complete box set (three volumes in hardback / four in paperback)。 The result is a gorgeous collection worthy of one of the best, most consistent strips around。Calvin & Hobbes began when I was just two years old and ended just before I turned twelve, so given that I wasn’t grabbing the newspaper every day as a kid, I completely missed out on Watterson’s legendary run。 With Watterson’s hard stance against licensing any of his work, there was no other way for Calvin’s world to enter my own outside of the source material。 No cartoon show, no movies, no merchandise – nothing。 After hearing for years that I should seek out and do a deep dive into Calvin & Hobbes, I took advantage of a sale and picked up the set earlier this year。This is about as perfect a series as I can imagine。 Watterson strikes the perfect tone between childhood wonder and adult perspective。 The relationship between Calvin and his stuffed tiger, Hobbes, is the template for a perfect friendship; they have each other’s back, fight and make up and genuinely bring out the best in one another。 I know that’s a little strange when you’re talking about a boy and his imagination, but Calvin and Hobbes’ partnership is one I could continue to read for years had Watterson not stopped in the mid-90s。The publisher did a wonderful job with the presentation having the daily strips retain their traditional black and white coloring as they’re laid over a slightly yellowed background。 It allows his work to pop off the page。 The full-page Sunday strips are bright and colorful and brilliantly restored。 This is especially excellent in the autumn comics where the reds, yellows and browns help to bring my favorite season to life。 I almost wish Watterson had at least allowed some licensing if only so I could get a big print to hang on the wall of my living room。While the box set will set you back over a cool one hundred dollars, it’s well worth the money。 This isn’t something released to cash in on nostalgia; it's a lovingly crafted tribute to one of the best comic strips you could possibly read。 。。。more

This is easily the best gift I’ve ever received and I read this cover to cover 4-5 times during the last 10 years。 It always manages to make me smile。 Imagination at its best coupled with dialogue that’s for all ages。

Calvin and Hobbes was a formative comic for me in many ways。In particular, far before I entered into the world of academic Philosophy I was reading the words of Hobbes (named for 17th century English philosopher Thomas Hobbes) and bothering people with speculative far too big-for-my-boots questions about purpose and happiness。 I like to think I learned a little something from Hobbes, but I think most importantly I learned kindness from Bill Watterson。

What can I say that hasn't been said? The nostalgia factor, the meanings, and different perspectives that I have while re-reading all of the comics。。It's funny, as I got closer to the end and knowing about Bill Watterson's history, it made me sad, thankful and altogether happy about how much this work of art (and this is art) means to me。 Thanks Bill, Calvin, and Hobbes for everything。 What can I say that hasn't been said? Forever my favorite comic strip of all time and a great inspiration to a lot of the newer strips, alongside Peanuts。 But Calvin & Hobbes is better, and I'm ready to fight anyone who says otherwise。 (I'm really not, everyone is free to love what they love。 Calvin and Hobbes is superior, though。) Forever my favorite comic strip of all time and a great inspiration to a lot of the newer strips, alongside Peanuts。 But Calvin & Hobbes is better, and I'm ready to fight anyone who says otherwise。 (I'm really not, everyone is free to love what they love。 Calvin and Hobbes is superior, though。) 。。。more

As a kid, reading this made me chuckle。As I’m getting older, I feel slightly sad every time I see a Calvin and Hobbes comic strip: the nostalgia just hooks on to you (if you know what I mean)This precious diamond of the 1900’s is my absolute favourite comic strip, and I believe many can agree。 Calvin calls out to the mischievous kid in each of us, while being unbelievably mature sometimes, his impossibly extensive vocabulary creates a mind blowing realisation every time I reread it。 Nostalgia ca As a kid, reading this made me chuckle。As I’m getting older, I feel slightly sad every time I see a Calvin and Hobbes comic strip: the nostalgia just hooks on to you (if you know what I mean)This precious diamond of the 1900’s is my absolute favourite comic strip, and I believe many can agree。 Calvin calls out to the mischievous kid in each of us, while being unbelievably mature sometimes, his impossibly extensive vocabulary creates a mind blowing realisation every time I reread it。 Nostalgia can be merciless, but not in this case。 。。。more

When I was a kid, I would occasionally read Calvin and Hobbes, typically on a Sunday。 I have to admit I didn’t “get it”, although I wasn’t the most aware kid at the time。 Sure, some of the adventures Calvin took as Spaceman Spiff or pretending to be a dinosaur were entertaining, but I never grasped what was really going。Fast forward years and I decided to read the entire strip straight through and I’m certainly glad I “waited” all of these years to do it。 Now that I’m much older and a father, I When I was a kid, I would occasionally read Calvin and Hobbes, typically on a Sunday。 I have to admit I didn’t “get it”, although I wasn’t the most aware kid at the time。 Sure, some of the adventures Calvin took as Spaceman Spiff or pretending to be a dinosaur were entertaining, but I never grasped what was really going。Fast forward years and I decided to read the entire strip straight through and I’m certainly glad I “waited” all of these years to do it。 Now that I’m much older and a father, I can appreciate what Watterson has done。 He’s tapped into that inner youth, that era of creativity and imagination, when the world was just opening up to you, and when you were still the primary focus of your parents。 As an adult reading this, you’re able to reminisce about the seemingly endless summer days of fun, coming up with stories while interacting with toys, wishing you didn’t have school because of the trials and tribulations of teachers and homework。 These stories allow us to relive our youth and remind us of probably the only era of pure joy in our lives。Conversely, as a parent, I can see behavior in Calvin that was in my child: the wish to stay up late, the preference to watch TV instead of going outside, lack of desire to do chores, the belief that they are the smartest person in the room, etc。 Seeing how Calvin’s parent’s both react to and deal with his behavior evokes a nodding of understanding, empathy and sympathy。 They are parents who are simply trying to raise a child with the right motivations, ethics and values, while at the same time trying to teach them the ways of the world without stifling what makes them unique。 But this all comes at a cost, which is really the definition of parenthood。Throughout the strip, Watterson uses Calvin’s unparalleled genius to pontificate on the world at large, gripe about the state of society and ponder the meaning of life。 Whether it’s about pollution, the effect of advertising on children, or simply the idea of enjoying what we have, Watterson adds a depth and conscience to this strip that elevates it above simple one-offs that only entertain for a couple of minutes。Sometimes I’d like to see what Calvin is doing with his life when he is older。 But then it dawned on me: I already know。 He’s drawing a daily comic strip about his life。Some favorites:Anything to do with snowmenThe time Calvin cut his own hairWhen Calvin couldn't wait for his beanie to arriveHobbes teasing Calvin about Susie being his Valentine 。。。more

The Quote that defines Calvin & Hobbes' by Bill Watterson to its very core and that we all wish we could apply to our own lives:In the short term, it would make me happy to go play outside; in the long term, it would make me happier to do well at school and become successful。But in the VERY long term, I know which will make better memories。so this was brilliant but i already knew that。 yet while reading it i confirmed that a) my favourite strips are still the ones with Calvin making freaky snowm The Quote that defines Calvin & Hobbes' by Bill Watterson to its very core and that we all wish we could apply to our own lives:In the short term, it would make me happy to go play outside; in the long term, it would make me happier to do well at school and become successful。But in the VERY long term, I know which will make better memories。so this was brilliant but i already knew that。 yet while reading it i confirmed that a) my favourite strips are still the ones with Calvin making freaky snowmen - it never EVER fails to make me laugh it's almost like magic haha b) I realised some things about Calvin's father this time - how their dynamic can be extreme opposites but also how much the Dad actually has a lot to do with the kid's active imagination and even his rants about society! it's probably something super obvious so it was funny to notice this while reading the complete thing, and what kinds of criticism Watterson intended in certain sequences - it just made me wanna hug Bill even more;c) I LOVED the redemption of Rosalyn in her last appearance - I almost cried watching Calvin and her playing together instead of him tormenting her haha it was a heart warming surprise, really (which was enhanced with Dad's skeptical reaction: "It's awfully late for jokes, Rosalyn" heh)。d) Hobbes is not just an imaginary friend, man - he is Calvin's self-awareness and common sense but just like everything else, he kinda fails at his task cause Calvin's desire to have fun is way more important than listening to reason。 questioning things is one of C's hobbies and H's always there to debate the validity/intrinsic goals of the explorations。e) Galaxoid and Nebular deserve a spin off, hahaha。overall, the psychology behind Calvin and Hobbes is fascinating。 the philosophy and poetry of it is wonderful。 not to mention the constant irony, cynicism and arrogant stubborness of a six year old that translates as endearing, peaceful aphorisms?! ^^ I'm so glad Bill Watterson came up with this little kid and his stuffed tiger awwww I'm emotionaaaal :')"It's a magical world, Hobbes ol'buddy。。。 Let's go exploring!THAT LAST STRIP DESERVES FIVE MILLIONS STARS ALONE!! HOW NOT TO LOVE THIS, HUH?! ;-; 。。。more
