Summary

Written by Naoki Higashida, a very smart, very self-aware, and very charming thirteen-year-old boy with autism, it is a one-of-a-kind memoir that demonstrates how an autistic mind thinks, feels, perceives, and responds in ways few of us can imagine。 Parents and family members who never thought they could get inside the head of their autistic loved one, at last, have a way to break through to the curious, subtle, and complex life within。

Using an alphabet grid to painstakingly construct words, sentences, and thoughts that he is unable to speak out loud, Naoki answers even the most delicate questions that people want to know。 Questions such as: “Why do people with autism talk so loudly and weirdly?” “Why do you line up your toy cars and blocks?” “Why don’t you make eye contact when you’re talking?” and “What’s the reason you jump?” (Naoki’s answer: “When I’m jumping, it’s as if my feelings are going upward to the sky。”) With disarming honesty and a generous heart, Naoki shares his unique point of view on not only autism but life itself。 His insights—into the mystery of words, the wonders of laughter, and the elusiveness of memory—are so startling, so strange, and so powerful that you will never look at the world the same way again。

3'5It was a good first approach to what means of being autistic。 However, we must remember that this book was written by a 13 years old and comes from his own experience。 I need a more scientific approach which i will definitely try to get from other books。 "I am right here" story and the illustrations were beautiful。 3'5It was a good first approach to what means of being autistic。 However, we must remember that this book was written by a 13 years old and comes from his own experience。 I need a more scientific approach which i will definitely try to get from other books。 "I am right here" story and the illustrations were beautiful。 。。。more

This book is good and easy to read。 It is helpful and gives insight on what individuals with autism face everyday, like to see their world through their eyes because it's the authors own account of living with autism。 When I read the description/summary, I was expecting a different format。 The format of this book is question and the authors response to the question。 But I now think that this format really works for this book because it's easy to put down and then come back to later or read other This book is good and easy to read。 It is helpful and gives insight on what individuals with autism face everyday, like to see their world through their eyes because it's the authors own account of living with autism。 When I read the description/summary, I was expecting a different format。 The format of this book is question and the authors response to the question。 But I now think that this format really works for this book because it's easy to put down and then come back to later or read other books at the same time without the possibility of forgetting details or mixing the different stories together。 。。。more

The quote of the book for me: “For people with autism, living itself is a battle。”

This should be required reading for every teacher。 It should be recommended to every human。 A succinct explanation, question and answer style, of what autism feels like on the inside to people unfamiliar with the particulars in the “outside” world。 The artwork adds another level of explanation in a breathtaking visual manner。

An indispensable book for all people, but particularly for those living or working with people with autism。 This first-hand account of life with autism is gripping, informative, empathetic and vital。 To have an experiential, rather than theoretical book on this topic, is invaluable。 One I will return to many times。

Such a beautiful book。 My youngest son was diagnosed with autism this week, this book provides a wonderful insight into the mind of an autistic person, and gave me a great insight into some traits I recognise in my little boy。 Would recommend it to everyone。

such an amazing book - it’s really insightful into how autistic people think, even though it’s a very personal journey for everyone。 personally I found the courage and understanding of this young boy of 13 so heartwarming and wholesome which definitely made the book for me。 I think everyone should read this book to gain insight and understanding particularly if you have an autistic family member such as myself

I wish I had liked this more than I did。 It's been sitting on my TBR for a while, and when I saw that the audiobook was only two and a half hours I thought now was a good time to give it a go。 I don't really know what I was expecting。 I guess I wanted more facts or science, but I don't know why I thought a 13-year-old would be able to give that to me。 For what it was - explanations from a young teen with autism - the book was fine。 And I did enjoy being able to hear what autism is really like st I wish I had liked this more than I did。 It's been sitting on my TBR for a while, and when I saw that the audiobook was only two and a half hours I thought now was a good time to give it a go。 I don't really know what I was expecting。 I guess I wanted more facts or science, but I don't know why I thought a 13-year-old would be able to give that to me。 For what it was - explanations from a young teen with autism - the book was fine。 And I did enjoy being able to hear what autism is really like straight from the horse's mouth。 It offered a new perspective and helped remove the stigma that autism is synonymous with "unintelligent" or "childish。" I see where I can be better about how I interact with someone who's autistic in the future, and for that, I'm very grateful。But I also feel like the book was a little redundant。 The same questions seemed to be asked, just worded differently, and therefore, the answers felt very similar。 As the book went along, the information became less interesting and more repetitive。 Rather than the Q&A style, I would have preferred those often-similar questions being mentioned just once and then having a much more thorough reply。 I just felt that everything was very generalized, and I guess I was looking for a little more meat on the bones, so to speak。 But again, this author was only 13 at the time of writing this book, and I have to applaud that and give credit where it's due。 I certainly recognize the accomplishment of Naoki Higashida regardless of my personal opinion。 。。。more

There were many insights into Autism that I really enjoyed reading about in this book。 As someone who works with students on the Autism spectrum, I kept wondering if any of them feel the same way as the author。 I do caution that in this book the author kind of has readers assuming that each person with Autism feels as he does。 Take that with a grain of salt。 Each person is unique。 Still, I really did enjoy this book!
