The only problem is, she hasn't told Heather。 Actually there are a few other problems。。。

Can Birdy carry off a summer at a luxury Scottish hotel pretending to be her best friend (who incidentally is a world-class wine expert)?

And can she stop herself from falling for the first man she's ever actually liked (but who thinks she's someone else)?

If you're looking to replace that Fleabag or Bridesmaids sized hole in your life, look no further: Birdy Finch is here。 A snort-out-loud romcom with a heart of gold, The Summer Job is THE debut to lose yourself in this year。

This story has me waiting for the other shoe to drop and when it did, the carefully constructed house of cards didn’t just fall, they exploded。 Why can’t you take a supposedly posh job your friend doesn’t want and pretend to be her? It’s only for the summer。 Well, it’s never a good idea to pretend you’re someone else, unless you’re role playing and everyone is in on it。 Things aren’t exactly as they seem in the Highlands as the website would suggest。 Grab this book and have a nail biting read。

This book was exactly what I needed it to be。 And was a great light read。 I would say 3。5 stars

Ok, so here I was really excited to read this book, thinking it would be a great summer read and it thoroughly disappointed。 My first gripe is that the cover is misleading。 “Birdy has her dream job”, is not true at all。 Within the first couple of chapters you begin to realize that this is not, in fact, her dream job, but just A job。 One that she doesn’t even know how to do。 It led me to believe that she secretly got a job that she was passionate about or really wanted, under false pretences, whi Ok, so here I was really excited to read this book, thinking it would be a great summer read and it thoroughly disappointed。 My first gripe is that the cover is misleading。 “Birdy has her dream job”, is not true at all。 Within the first couple of chapters you begin to realize that this is not, in fact, her dream job, but just A job。 One that she doesn’t even know how to do。 It led me to believe that she secretly got a job that she was passionate about or really wanted, under false pretences, which would have made this book a better read in my opinion。That brings me to my second point, I did not like Birdy at all。 I mean, I get that she is developed as character by the end of the book, but it annoyed me to no end that she would pretend to take a job that she didn’t even know or like (she makes fun of the pretentious-ness a lot at the beginning)。。。it was just so irresponsible and infuriating to read。Thirdly, James, like the rest of the book, was absolutely boring。 I understand that he’s shy, but that doesn’t mean he has to be boring。 And that kind of ties the entire theme of the book together: boring。 It was a struggle to get through it and I kept pushing myself hoping for any sort of action or anything interesting about this book at all, but it disappointed。 The only reason I’m giving two stars and not one is because it was well-written。 。。。more

I received a complimentary copy of this book "The Summer Job" and all opinions expressed are my own。 I thought this was a good book。 It was a bit hard to understand some of it, the British words they use mostly。 But overall a good story line and it was funny。 I received a complimentary copy of this book "The Summer Job" and all opinions expressed are my own。 I thought this was a good book。 It was a bit hard to understand some of it, the British words they use mostly。 But overall a good story line and it was funny。 。。。more

Cute British romance。 Slow at times, but I loved Elizabeth’s witty personality。 I wish the author would have had more depth between her and James。

An ok quick read but I find it hard to really enjoy a book when the main character who I guess is supposed to be quirky is just annoying and self centered

Lovely read!!!

DNFd at page 130。。。 the super cute cover pulled me in, the promises of “fun and funny” pulled me in。。。 but I think I’m just missing the vibe everyone else seems to get from this。 I didn’t find it fun or funny and just did not connect with this one。

3。5! A fun beach read。 I loved the setting of this story。 The main character Birdie took a long time for me to warm up to, but she won me over eventually。 The romance was cute。 There were some scenes that made me cringe and the middle of the story is a little bit slow。 The twist and the ending were really good! Overall a likable fun read。

Oh my god。 I was not prepared to fall in love with this book。 I thought it would be some lighthearted book full of cheesy feel good dialogue and cliches。 And yet while the tone was lighthearted and easy to read, with several laughable moments, the book touches on more in depth topics such as belonging, alcoholism, and being true to yourself。I LOVED the budding friendship and relationship with you know who。 FINALLY a man who is soft and sweet and quiet, someone who isn't the typical macho man, wh Oh my god。 I was not prepared to fall in love with this book。 I thought it would be some lighthearted book full of cheesy feel good dialogue and cliches。 And yet while the tone was lighthearted and easy to read, with several laughable moments, the book touches on more in depth topics such as belonging, alcoholism, and being true to yourself。I LOVED the budding friendship and relationship with you know who。 FINALLY a man who is soft and sweet and quiet, someone who isn't the typical macho man, who doesn't say the wittiest things, someone who is endearing in a way that doesn't scream。 *Dreamy Sigh * Man I think I'm in love with a fictional character。 Anyways, go read this, I'm off to book a trip to Scotland。 。。。more

I wanted to like this book, I really did, but my expectations from the summary did not match up with the narrative itself。 Birdy, like so many others, dreams about running away from her going-nowhere life。 But in her case, she actually *does* run away, when she pretends to be her best friend Heather for the summer。 Heather, an up and coming sommelier, has landed a job at a run down Scottish restaurant, but chooses instead to go to Italy with her boyfriend。Birdy offers to call and get her out of I wanted to like this book, I really did, but my expectations from the summary did not match up with the narrative itself。 Birdy, like so many others, dreams about running away from her going-nowhere life。 But in her case, she actually *does* run away, when she pretends to be her best friend Heather for the summer。 Heather, an up and coming sommelier, has landed a job at a run down Scottish restaurant, but chooses instead to go to Italy with her boyfriend。Birdy offers to call and get her out of the job, but decides (after forgetting to do so) to go in her place instead。 The problem? The run down restaurant has been entirely renovated into a Michelin-worthy establishment and Birdy knows nothing about wine。 Will she survive the summer with Heather's reputation intact? While I thought this book was well-crafted--its prose is clear and the plot moves along at a pace that makes this a quick read, it really stretched the boundaries of credibility for me, and I found the characters' (namely Birdy and Heather) disrespect and immaturity (where to start? Birdy and Tim's drunken antics everywhere they go? Heather feeling she's too good to show up for a job because she thinks it's just in some dumpy little place anyway? Birdy making a fool of herself by knowing nothing about this job and conveniently falling asleep every time she needs to "study"?) is just a bridge too long for me to cross。 Not to mention: no one in this establishment is going to realize the woman who shows up is completely clueless about the position? Heather is supposed to have a stellar reputation, and so is her father。 The secondary characters were all great and Birdy didn't deserve any of them。 If only this was a book about James instead。A special thanks to NetGalley and Putnam Books for granting me this ARC to review。 I think it just came down to it not being the right book for me。 。。。more

This book really surprised me! I wanted a light, fun, happy summer read and this book was perfect。 I was so excited to to jump back in with this amazing cast of characters in the idyllic Scottish Highlands。 I loved seeing Birdy grow and find herself throughout the book, and the end is very satisfying。

DNF。 Stopped at 20%。 I think that young & quirky heroine, madcap romcom isn't my thing。 I was more annoyed by the main character than I believe I was supposed to feel。 DNF。 Stopped at 20%。 I think that young & quirky heroine, madcap romcom isn't my thing。 I was more annoyed by the main character than I believe I was supposed to feel。 。。。more

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。 Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read this one。 I was pleasantly surprised with this book。 I found it difficult to put down, even though I usually cringe when plots prolong the inevitable 'reveal'。 The writer just made it so easy to read, with her fast paced tempo and comical banter。 Birdy was also such a fun lead, and with the lovely cast in Scotland, it felt like she was home。 I li I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。 Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read this one。 I was pleasantly surprised with this book。 I found it difficult to put down, even though I usually cringe when plots prolong the inevitable 'reveal'。 The writer just made it so easy to read, with her fast paced tempo and comical banter。 Birdy was also such a fun lead, and with the lovely cast in Scotland, it felt like she was home。 I like that James was a lovely person, I don't think there's anything more attractive than that。 The descriptions of the wine, food and landscape had me wanting to get on a plane and visit。 Definitely a book I'll be recommending。 。。。more

I wanted this to be a good beach read - but it wasn’t。 I spent the majority of the time skimming the pages trying to get it over with。 The main character was boring and whiny。 There are better beach reads out there。

So I definitely enjoyed this book, it was a fun read and a great premise。 It felt a little slow to start, but once I got into it, the plot is definitely keeping me going。 Like, I was thinking “omg how is this all going to work out?!” That said, the romance really takes a back seat, and it expected it to feature a little more prominently。 And the ending was a little lack luster。 Like, you get your HEA but I think I wanted more of the conflict and working through it, instead of just like things go So I definitely enjoyed this book, it was a fun read and a great premise。 It felt a little slow to start, but once I got into it, the plot is definitely keeping me going。 Like, I was thinking “omg how is this all going to work out?!” That said, the romance really takes a back seat, and it expected it to feature a little more prominently。 And the ending was a little lack luster。 Like, you get your HEA but I think I wanted more of the conflict and working through it, instead of just like things go entirely to shit and then POOF it’s resolved, which was kind of how this felt。 。。。more

Overall, I felt kinda meh about this book。 Not necessarily bad, but not particularly memorable either。 Giving it 2。5/5 Stars。

I’ll be honest: at first I was a bit wary。 I found the main character Birdy to be super unlikeable at first and wasn’t sure I would want to keep reading from her perspective。 But if you feel the same way, hold out because this book has great character development, keeps you in the edge of your seat, and reads like a love letter to the west coast of Scotland。 Hell, I was practically ready to start planning a trip by the end of the book。 I would definitely recommend this as a fun summer read。

Almost DNF, but curiosity got the best of me so I skimmed over a good chunk of dialogue to keep following the plot。 The main character was living one big lie that never got to be much more than the back cover described。 It was so long (350+ pgs!) for what it was too。 Not for me!

Kate R

Unfortunately, I DNF at 20%。 I was so annoyed by the main character and the whole situation she cooked up I couldn't take it any longer and put it down。 This is a it's me, not you kind of situation here。 I'm definitely in the minority, so pick it up and see for yourself。 Unfortunately, I DNF at 20%。 I was so annoyed by the main character and the whole situation she cooked up I couldn't take it any longer and put it down。 This is a it's me, not you kind of situation here。 I'm definitely in the minority, so pick it up and see for yourself。 。。。more

I'm a bit late at reviewing this one。 I however, thoroughly enjoyed it。 I found it funny, thrilling and touching。 I loved the theme of growth in this book。 I love how the main character worked so hard and how the story developed。 I heard that it was going to be adapted as a series, and I can really see how the scenes could play out so well as a TV series。 There was enough humor and anticipation to carry you through to the end。 I also loved the emersive feeling of being in the Scottish setting an I'm a bit late at reviewing this one。 I however, thoroughly enjoyed it。 I found it funny, thrilling and touching。 I loved the theme of growth in this book。 I love how the main character worked so hard and how the story developed。 I heard that it was going to be adapted as a series, and I can really see how the scenes could play out so well as a TV series。 There was enough humor and anticipation to carry you through to the end。 I also loved the emersive feeling of being in the Scottish setting and the inner workings of the restaurant。 。。。more

This one was a miss for me。 There was zero chemistry between the two that are supposed to be falling for each other。 Also, this girl comes into the restaurant lying about her experience and then tries to have all these ideas for how they need to do better and I just can’t with that。

Allison

This was fun and I loved the Scottish setting。 This felt like something that would actually happen at the same time as being unrealistic。 Definitely a cute beach read。

I really liked this one! Great lighthearted romance, beautiful setting, modern characters with modern problems。 There was something satisfying about it。 Definitely add it to your summer reading list。

2。5 stars。 Pretty meh, even for a rom-com, and I really did not like the main character。 Some nice moments and if you like wine I guess this is for you。 British binge drinking culture at its finest lmao。
