Summary

Four seekers have arrived at the rambling old pile known as Hill House: Dr。 Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of psychic phenomena; Theodora, his lovely and lighthearted assistant; Luke, the adventurous future inheritor of the estate; and Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman with a dark past。 As they begin to cope with chilling, even horrifying occurrences beyond their control or understanding, they cannot possibly know what lies ahead。 For Hill House is gathering its powers - and soon it will choose one of them to make its own。

3。5 I read this book because I have previously watched the Netflix series。 The two are vastly different。 I mainly enjoyed the Netflix series more (and I have never liked a movie better than the book)。 In the book, I did enjoy how well the author made the character of Nell grow to become crazy。 If I were to separate the series and the book then I might have scored it a 4, which is were the half point comes from。 The ending of the book was subpar in relationships to many other horror books I have 3。5 I read this book because I have previously watched the Netflix series。 The two are vastly different。 I mainly enjoyed the Netflix series more (and I have never liked a movie better than the book)。 In the book, I did enjoy how well the author made the character of Nell grow to become crazy。 If I were to separate the series and the book then I might have scored it a 4, which is were the half point comes from。 The ending of the book was subpar in relationships to many other horror books I have read。 。。。more

BLC Monthly pick。 It had a slow start, a funny middle, and a slow ending。 I’m indifferent。

wish it was way longer, I feel like it needs to be at least another 200 pages for you to be able to actually feel satisfied with the story。 it left me with an itch that I couldn't scratch and it saddens me because I greatly enjoyed the descriptions of pure terror the guests experience, especially since the only narrator we have is Eleanor who's greatly influenced by the house and what happens in there, but also I'm greedy and I want more more more。 I wish there were multiple povs so we could exp wish it was way longer, I feel like it needs to be at least another 200 pages for you to be able to actually feel satisfied with the story。 it left me with an itch that I couldn't scratch and it saddens me because I greatly enjoyed the descriptions of pure terror the guests experience, especially since the only narrator we have is Eleanor who's greatly influenced by the house and what happens in there, but also I'm greedy and I want more more more。 I wish there were multiple povs so we could experience the haunting and the house with all of the guests, I wish we knew much more about them because I've felt great affection for them the same way Eleanor does during the book, i want to know what happens at the end of the road。 I suppose, having watched the Netflix show (which I know is not entirely based on this, so I knew it wasn't gonna be the exact same) I expected way way more - which is my fault - but the itch! I wish I could've have felt more satisfied with this because the premise is great and the book actually grips you and makes you feel like you're experiencing the haunting with Eleanor but alas。。。 three stars only。it's not a horror, which I actually appreciate, it's more about the pure terror the group experiences and it does a great job at that。 at parts, I felt so captured by the fear they all felt that it made me want to stop reading it at night, afraid I was gonna have nightmares (and I usually obsess over things, leading me to dream about them) and I think I've had some kind of weird dream there pat two nights which tells a lot about the story and how great the writing is。 so。 give me more。 。。。more

God I love Shirley Jackson and also female characters who are so lonely they go kinda crazy in a big house。 IDK what that says about me。

A very dreadful book。 the house has its own characteristic。 the characters are very well written。 Really liked that Shirley Jackson did not ever show us the ghost that lived in the house and let the reader interpret it own their own。 Definitely a 2nd read worthy book, thus the 5 star。

I really enjoyed this read。 I listened to the audiobook in one afternoon and was the perfect amount of intrigued, creeped out, and amused by all the goings-on。 The ending was so nice and unresolved, which is perfect for a book like this。 I enjoyed the atmosphere of the novel as well。 My only real complaint was the length and to a small extent the pacing。 The end w exciting, but was a bit too rushed and while Eleanor had an interesting background and trauma, it could have been nice to get to know I really enjoyed this read。 I listened to the audiobook in one afternoon and was the perfect amount of intrigued, creeped out, and amused by all the goings-on。 The ending was so nice and unresolved, which is perfect for a book like this。 I enjoyed the atmosphere of the novel as well。 My only real complaint was the length and to a small extent the pacing。 The end w exciting, but was a bit too rushed and while Eleanor had an interesting background and trauma, it could have been nice to get to know her and everyone a little better。 I really enjoyed Eleanor as a character and really being along for the ride in her descent into madness。 The ending was so interesting, really, because it shone a spotlight on her trauma。 I thought it was simultaneously awful and perfect。 Still, I really enjoyed it especially because it's not my normal type of read。 。。。more

Boooooooooooooring。。。。。。 This book is a rate example where TV show adaptations are better than actual books。 I found each and every single character to be so boring and bland。 Watching paint dry would be more entertaining than following Elenor's aggressive, mental ass all day。 Boooooooooooooring。。。。。。 This book is a rate example where TV show adaptations are better than actual books。 I found each and every single character to be so boring and bland。 Watching paint dry would be more entertaining than following Elenor's aggressive, mental ass all day。 。。。more

I’d say this was a 3。5/5 star read for me。 I liked this story overall— the one thing that I found was that it was not as horrifying as I had anticipated。 However, it was published in 1959 and I can see how it could have been horrifying during that time。I also like that the Netflix show was loosely based on this book and that the book was different than the show。

In short, I enjoyed it, but I didn’t love it。 Perhaps it’s the age of the book that makes it feel a little preoccupied with appearances, but I feel like so much energy was devoted to “dear me, what must the others think of me?” that the plot kind of kept getting dragged back。 That being said, the positive side is that the plot’s sags and turns somehow contribute to an almost disorienting effect, which makes the book even more interesting。It’s a classic for a reason, and I’m very glad I read it, In short, I enjoyed it, but I didn’t love it。 Perhaps it’s the age of the book that makes it feel a little preoccupied with appearances, but I feel like so much energy was devoted to “dear me, what must the others think of me?” that the plot kind of kept getting dragged back。 That being said, the positive side is that the plot’s sags and turns somehow contribute to an almost disorienting effect, which makes the book even more interesting。It’s a classic for a reason, and I’m very glad I read it, but I wouldn’t necessarily put it at the top of my “must read” books or anything like that。 。。。more

If you enjoy a psychological thriller, you will romp through this。 Although the main story revolves around four people staying at Hill House to provide evidence of the supernatural activities, it is more like a psychological study of one woman, Eleanor, a solitary figure, who wants to attach herself to another guest, Theodora。 Theodora has shades of the nastiest girl in school and flirts with Luke, who stands to inherit Hill House, alienating Eleanor further。 If you like Patricia Highsmith's wor If you enjoy a psychological thriller, you will romp through this。 Although the main story revolves around four people staying at Hill House to provide evidence of the supernatural activities, it is more like a psychological study of one woman, Eleanor, a solitary figure, who wants to attach herself to another guest, Theodora。 Theodora has shades of the nastiest girl in school and flirts with Luke, who stands to inherit Hill House, alienating Eleanor further。 If you like Patricia Highsmith's work, you'll enjoy that of her contemporary, Shirley Jackson, although Highsmith is the far better writer in my opinion。 As does Highsmith in some of her novels, so Jackson includes a subtle homoerotic theme to this work。 。。。more

Meh。 The beginning was good and the last chapter was fine, but the middle really dragged。

I wanted to like this book。。。I really tried! The Netflix show was so amazing to me, that I was hoping this book would be the same but more detailed, it was not。 Very slow read for me, it seemed that there was about 1 full chapter of the plot and the rest was just the 4 characters drinking and talking。 I am so disappointed with this read :(

I loved this。 I loved the main character and the story。 I think more creepy things could have happened and sometimes the writing made it a a bit hard to keep going but I related so hard to Eleanor。

I started this after watching the brilliant series on Netflix。 Whilst there are few similarities, the book still impressed me!The story concerns four main characters: Dr。 John Montague, an investigator of the supernatural; Eleanor Vance, a shy young woman who resents having lived as a recluse caring for her demanding disabled mother; Theodora, a bohemian artist implied to be in a relationship with a woman; and Luke Sanderson, the young heir to Hill House, who is host to the others。Dr Montague ha I started this after watching the brilliant series on Netflix。 Whilst there are few similarities, the book still impressed me!The story concerns four main characters: Dr。 John Montague, an investigator of the supernatural; Eleanor Vance, a shy young woman who resents having lived as a recluse caring for her demanding disabled mother; Theodora, a bohemian artist implied to be in a relationship with a woman; and Luke Sanderson, the young heir to Hill House, who is host to the others。Dr Montague has invited Theodora and Eleanor, as his guests, to Hill House as he hopes to find evidence of the supernatural。 Luke is there because he owns the house。 During their time at Hill House numerous anomalies occur and Eleanor starts to experience various supernatural events。。。。 but is it truly the supernatural? Or is Eleanor losing touch with reality? An absolutely fantastic ghost story。 Highly recommend。 。。。more

This book was absolutely chilling! The book is much different than the Netflix series。 I found it much scarier。 Jackson’s descriptions of Hill House and the events that took place there were insanely detailed and made you feel like you were alongside Eleanor and experiencing every moment。 I had so much trouble putting it down。 I strongly recommend it to any horror fans。

This book was very entertaining! Characters: Every character in this book was well-written。 Some were annoying, some were hilarious, some were smart, some were very, very odd — but each one felt authentic, and in their own way, enjoyable。 They really made the book。 Plot: As with a lot of supernatural/paranormal, there are no guaranteed answers, but I didn’t find myself minding terribly much。 There was enough that was plausible for me to be satisfied。 It could have been much more fleshed out, and This book was very entertaining! 3。5 is probably more accurate。 This book feels like it’s constantly building toward something it never quite reaches, which leaves on a somewhat unsatisfactory ending。 But it’s beautifully written and properly creepy all throughout。 There’s also quite the sexual/romantic tension between Theo and Eleanor I quite liked reading。

I read this as a book club read。 It's not the kind of book I usually pick up but I ended up liking it。 It has a bit of a slow start but then picks up and keeps pace until the end。 The characters are interesting, although they're not overly well developed。 (view spoiler)[It's definitely gothic rather than horror, so the scares walk the continual line between is it real or in their heads? and there's no resolution of that question。 It also has one of my most hated fictional characters ever, Mrs Mo I read this as a book club read。 It's not the kind of book I usually pick up but I ended up liking it。 It has a bit of a slow start but then picks up and keeps pace until the end。 The characters are interesting, although they're not overly well developed。 (view spoiler)[It's definitely gothic rather than horror, so the scares walk the continual line between is it real or in their heads? and there's no resolution of that question。 It also has one of my most hated fictional characters ever, Mrs Montague, who seems written purely to infuriate readers。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

I enjoyed "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" more, but this was a great read also。 I really enjoyed the protagonist in this one (Sorry, the name is not coming up; it's been a while since I read it)。 She felt very real, and had very real feeling emotions。 I liked the dynamic between her and the other woman (Theadora?)。 There were some quirky and funny scenes and then there were some truly eerie/sinister scenes。 Overall a great read。 I enjoyed "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" more, but this was a great read also。 I really enjoyed the protagonist in this one (Sorry, the name is not coming up; it's been a while since I read it)。 She felt very real, and had very real feeling emotions。 I liked the dynamic between her and the other woman (Theadora?)。 There were some quirky and funny scenes and then there were some truly eerie/sinister scenes。 Overall a great read。 。。。more

Maybe this was considered scary in 1959 when it was written, but I found most of the book was to be enjoyed through character interactions that actually seem to progress to some sort of head and then leave the story flat with an underwhelming ending。 The sarcasm of the characters is fun。 The haunting episodes can establish some excitement, but in the end, I felt the author struggled to find the words to concoct any real haunt worth remembering。 This was ranked number one in horror on so many lis Maybe this was considered scary in 1959 when it was written, but I found most of the book was to be enjoyed through character interactions that actually seem to progress to some sort of head and then leave the story flat with an underwhelming ending。 The sarcasm of the characters is fun。 The haunting episodes can establish some excitement, but in the end, I felt the author struggled to find the words to concoct any real haunt worth remembering。 This was ranked number one in horror on so many lists。 I am really quite disappointed。 I wouldn't even place it in top 100。 Charles Dicken's "A Christmas Carol" is a better haunt story than this。 Heck, so is "Casper the Friendly Ghost"。 。。。more
