Summary

Captivating and action-packed, From Blood and Ash is a sexy, addictive, and unexpected fantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J。 Maas and Laura Thalassa。

A Maiden…

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own。 The life of the Maiden is solitary。 Never to be touched。 Never to be looked upon。 Never to be spoken to。 Never to experience pleasure。 Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods。 But the choice has never been hers。

A Duty…

The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself。 Because a Maiden has a heart。 And a soul。 And longing。 And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need。 He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden。

A Kingdom…

Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance。 And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred。 Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel。

YALLLLLLLLLL。 This book。。。。 I have no words。 It had literally like ALL my favorite tropes。 Took me a while to get into but I feel like that happens with any new fantasy book。 So much stuff kept happening and I had to keep reading。 SO GOOD。 After the ending I cannot wait to start the next book。 Also ✨honeydew✨

Addicted。 New favorite book。 Finished in a day, and never wanted to put it down

I think I would give 10 stars if I could。 This story was intriguing from start to finish。 It wasn’t predictable, and had a number of twists that left my jaw on the floor。 From what I had heard, I was expecting MOSTLY romance and spice, but no one told me that the story would be just as good。 I cannot wait to read the second one!!

*4。5/5 ok so the first 100 pages were sort of confusing and dull, but once it picked up, i was hooked。 i’m not really a fan of fantasy books, but this was an exception。 & the smut was great lmao

If I had known this book would be about "wolven" and "vamprys" and have overtly sexually aggressive men seducing innocent women underscored with the subsequent "I love you, no I hate you" plot I never would have picked this up。 I did so much eye-rolling I'm surprised I even bothered to finish it。 If I had known this book would be about "wolven" and "vamprys" and have overtly sexually aggressive men seducing innocent women underscored with the subsequent "I love you, no I hate you" plot I never would have picked this up。 I did so much eye-rolling I'm surprised I even bothered to finish it。 。。。more

okay so, i will say that it’s a bit hard to get into。 the world building is sort of confusing in the beginning, but the story is fast paced and the twists are amazingly written。 i absolutely loved the writing and the plot, and the characters were just as wonderful。 this is definitely one of my favorite books that i have ever read, and i plan on reading more of the blood and ash series, as well as other books/series written by Jennifer L。 Armentrout。

WELL WELL WELL, Where do I even begin? This book was absolute trash and I literally felt like I was losing brain cells。 I did not finish this book mainly because it was just so boring。600 pages of what? Utter nonsense。 There was no plot and no world-building and usually, I would allow It for the character’s sake but where do I even begin? There was NO character development and no character even remotely interested me at all - also there were no other POC except Tawny whom I didn't even know was b WELL WELL WELL, Where do I even begin? This book was absolute trash and I literally felt like I was losing brain cells。 I did not finish this book mainly because it was just so boring。600 pages of what? Utter nonsense。 There was no plot and no world-building and usually, I would allow It for the character’s sake but where do I even begin? There was NO character development and no character even remotely interested me at all - also there were no other POC except Tawny whom I didn't even know was black until I read the other reviews。 Also, the so-called “plot” was all over the place; I wouldn't be able to tell you anything that happened in this book except for the smut which was mediocre at best。Main Character -Penellaphe Balfour AKA Poppy YEP YOU READ THAT RIGHT - Apparently, her name is not Penelope (first of all this name is an absolute crime - who In their right mind would name their child that tf I don't even think I've spelled that right either)Poppy was SO SO BORING she literally had the personality of a wet sponge, even the Cravens were probably more interesting than her。 I was expecting a strong badass female lead however what we got was the complete opposite。 Poppy always plays the damsel in distress even though she can fight because sHe’S nOt LiKe oThEr GiRls。 Poppy always whines about how she's The Maiden, The Chosen One for Ascension (whatever tf that is??) and she also has some tragic backstory about how her parents died BOO HOO。 This girl annoyed me so much, always doing things that she wasn’t supposed to do (but she did them anyway??) and she received some training from Vikter (father figure/lover couldn’t tell you) which we have no clue why but at least she can use a knife。 She was supposedly portrayed to be “Pure” and had to remain that way for Ascension for the Gods but I just thought she was a horny teenager - I can’t lie。 Love interest - SPOILER ALERT - BLAND!!Hawke Flynn AKA Prince Casteel AKA The Dark OneSeems to be a little love affair between Harry Potter (Poppy The Chosen One) and Voldy (Casteel The Dark One)。 This guy was abusive, weird and disgusting who took advantage of Poppy and trapped her into losing her virginity。 He was basically a walking ICK and if he was the most handsome guy in a place named after a macadamia nut then they must have had VERY LOW standards。 I literally do not have anything nice to say about this dead character。Also, a lot of things confused me in this so-called “romance” novel - genuinely wouldn’t call it a romance at all, It definitely wasn’t the slow burn, smutty but sweet, enemies to lovers romance that I had been apprehensive about at all。Confusing things?1) Wtf is a Craven - I thought it was a zombie of some sort like a Crank from the maze runner but apparently, It’s a vampire?2) Speaking of a vampire what is a Vampry - Is that not a vampire?3) No clue what Descenters are either, are they also some sort of other creature/being4) What is an Atlantian? 5) And who are The Ascended? - I didn’t know if they were something God Like or just members of the nobilityAll there were Wolven (Werewolves) involved too which made me wonder if this book was some sick crossover between Twilight on crack and Percy Jackson with the number of random details to Greek mythology (all the random gods they had) and the vampire and werewolves combo。 This book just seemed like a very badly written Wattpad fanfic which I definitely didn’t expect from an established author like JLA。 Saying that I was deeply disappointed with this book is a colossal understatement for obvious reasons。 Tiktok and Goodreads really hyped this trainwreck of a book up and for that reason, I will NOT be reading the sequels。 The 1 ⭐️ is for Rylan who truly deserved better and that it should have been poppy who died instead。Thanks for reading this review。Lila Dazzle xoxo 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This was honestly a brutal read for me。 I started off wanting to love Poppy and adore Casteel, but both were quickly ruined for me。 75% of this book is Cas either convincing Poppy to “choose” something she might not entirely want at the moment (but he does) or actually forcing her to do so with his magical abilities or whatever。 On the other hand, Poppy is just so impulsive and reckless it’s agonizing。 It’s one thing to have us as readers be able to recognize that she has been trapped her entire This was honestly a brutal read for me。 I started off wanting to love Poppy and adore Casteel, but both were quickly ruined for me。 75% of this book is Cas either convincing Poppy to “choose” something she might not entirely want at the moment (but he does) or actually forcing her to do so with his magical abilities or whatever。 On the other hand, Poppy is just so impulsive and reckless it’s agonizing。 It’s one thing to have us as readers be able to recognize that she has been trapped her entire life, thus creating within her the desire to want to act recklessly, but she legit does something ill-advised almost every day of her life, even before Cas rolls up, and a lot of those choices usually end up endangering either her life or others as well。 Furthermore, I did not enjoy her murdering the Lord in vengeance - I Feel like it would’ve been way more powerful if it was in defense instead。I also didn’t love how early the first intimate scene was because there was no real connection established between Cas and Poppy and after that it seemed forced because they had exchanged a couple kisses - “oh okay yeah actually I’ve spent a lot of time watching him train and I guess I do find myself attracted to him”…。are we sure about that?? I will say tho that some of the banter I did enjoy, and I liked that we did get a lot of Poppy and Cas scenes following, but on the same token, a lot of the banter was cringey and filled with really questionable consent issues! Plus, every scene between them never seemed to develop their relationship on a personal level as strongly as it did on a sexual level (which I guess is whatever) but again I didn’t love how Cas was highkey forcing himself on this ignorant girl。 I guess the point was that he had to get close to her to save his brother but the ends don’t always justify the means。 I only give this 3 stars just cause I did enjoy some of the plot。 The cliffhanger was annoyingly perfect (I gasped and frantically turned the page and was left with nothing but anguish) and the whole idea of a kingdom instilling fear and submissiveness into their people through religion was kind of interesting。 Overall though, this book has a lot of problematic concerns。 I’m hoping the rest of the series isn’t as questionable and hard to get through but I’m not sure。 。。。more

I really wanted to love this book because of all the hype around it but I can’t lie, I was a bit disappointed。 The writing was really repetitive and kept going over the same 5 points throughout the whole book。 Another thing that would’ve improved the book is better world building; I just felt like it lacked depth (and had so many missed opportunities)。 Also could the “plot twist” be any more obvious? Overall, it was still an enjoyable read (the banter was very entertaining)! The book had a slow start but it really started to pick up about half way through。 I even cried a few times during the end。 I liked how the book taught us so much about this world and we were led to believe one thing, then just like Poppy everything we thought was true was completely turned on us。 I was angry at Hawke just like Poppy was as I had grown to tryst him too and I felt betrayed when his true intentions were shown。 The ending was such a cliffhanger and I can't wait to read the sec Wow! 4/5 StarsOk to summarize really everything is that basically it was good。 It was a bit chaotic for me though maybe it was because I’m just getting out of a reading slump。 I had a hard time grasping or understanding the whole plot and the world/society it was set in。 So it was harder for me to really enjoy it as much。 The ending really had me on an emotional rollercoaster。 Character Analysis:Poppy- Poppy is a stubborn bad-ass character, which totally doesn’t match the role she plays as The Maiden 4/5 StarsOk to summarize really everything is that basically it was good。 It was a bit chaotic for me though maybe it was because I’m just getting out of a reading slump。 I had a hard time grasping or understanding the whole plot and the world/society it was set in。 So it was harder for me to really enjoy it as much。 The ending really had me on an emotional rollercoaster。 Character Analysis:Poppy- Poppy is a stubborn bad-ass character, which totally doesn’t match the role she plays as The Maiden but I feel like the persona she takes on as the Maiden is like the type of female characters written by men and her real stab people in the heart self is the type of female role models written by woman authors。 I also liked how poppy had physical and mental scars。 I also liked the importance of how scars can be symbols of what we have gone through and that we are here surviving, bearing these scars。 Hawke- I loved Hawke but I always felt like he was hiding smth。 He was too how do you say “perfect”。 He believed in her and her ability to defend herself。 He told her she was beautiful and all that stuff。 It was hard not to love him and the ending really sent me on a whirlwind。 Though I have this thing in my head it literally has nothing to do with the book but I hate when men call woman “Princess”。 *start excessive cringing* I just hate it so much it seems so degrading Idk why I feel that way I just do。 It makes my insides churn and want to empty its contents right on the floor。 Back to the actual topic though Hawke teasing Poppy abt the diary is the funniest thing ever。———————————————————————————Though it was hard for me to connect with the characters on a deeper level I love them and sympathize with them。 Poppy really has been a caged bird her whole life and I really want to see how she breaks out of it。 。。。more

a) weirded out by the age difference a la Twilightb) weirded out by the manipulation of someone with less experiencec) sort of appreciate the protagonist’s desire for independence (pretty clear bildungsroman journey here) whilst struggling with the explicit descriptions of her experiences (& the discomfort described in “b” above)

3。5 stars。 Spoilers aheadThe writing was excellent, and the plot was fairly good, but it annoyed me to no end how Poppy dropped the whole "strong woman" thing as soon as one hot guy appears。 It might just be that I'm asexual and the desire annoys me, but I felt her whole relationship was skewed and weird。 I REALLY hated Hawke, and I felt like he pushed her too much to like him。 It was ok because she did like him, but if she didn't I feel like he didn't give her time to say "no"。 I still think th 3。5 stars。 Spoilers aheadThe writing was excellent, and the plot was fairly good, but it annoyed me to no end how Poppy dropped the whole "strong woman" thing as soon as one hot guy appears。 It might just be that I'm asexual and the desire annoys me, but I felt her whole relationship was skewed and weird。 I REALLY hated Hawke, and I felt like he pushed her too much to like him。 It was ok because she did like him, but if she didn't I feel like he didn't give her time to say "no"。 I still think the author is very talented, and this did hook me, I just felt the plot leaned on Hawke way too much。 。。。more
