Summary

Oliver Marks has just served ten years in jail - for a murder he may or may not have committed。 On the day he's released, he's greeted by the man who put him in prison。 Detective Colborne is retiring, but before he does, he wants to know what really happened a decade ago。

As one of seven young actors studying Shakespeare at an elite arts college, Oliver and his friends play the same roles onstage and off: hero, villain, tyrant, temptress, ingenue, extra。 But when the casting changes, and the secondary characters usurp the stars, the plays spill dangerously over into life, and one of them is found dead。 The rest face their greatest acting challenge yet: convincing the police, and themselves, that they are blameless。

Granted it looks like I am in the minority here (although I did see a few reviews scattered with similar views to my own) but this book was just a snooze fest。 I'll hold my hands up Shakespeare wasn't something I ever really read or got excited by during school or college, I've read a few plays over the years。 But the story just sounded too intriguing to pass up, loved the whole paying homage to Shakespeare wrapped up in a big murder mystery set in the early 1990s I could literally envision the Granted it looks like I am in the minority here (although I did see a few reviews scattered with similar views to my own) but this book was just a snooze fest。 I'll hold my hands up Shakespeare wasn't something I ever really read or got excited by during school or college, I've read a few plays over the years。 But the story just sounded too intriguing to pass up, loved the whole paying homage to Shakespeare wrapped up in a big murder mystery set in the early 1990s I could literally envision the movie in my mind。However what I was greeted with was a pretentious snoozefest that was over half quotes。 There never felt like there was time to build up any kind of mystery or suspense。 No shocks or jaw dropping moments。 I was waiting for the boom, for the click and it just never happened。 Like I say the whole 1990s vibe came through and I guess I did enjoy the atmosphere and mood, I could really envision the setting and the characters but none of them were likeable for me。Overall after seeing the high scores and rave reviews, severely disappointed。 。。。more

Oh how I love dark academia and pretentious characters。 And tell me, can you find any characters more pretentious than elite theatre students who solely study Shakespeare? This book got me out of an I-don’t-even-know-how-long reading slump。 It’s awoken that same old childlike love of reading。 I made time for this; tearing through it as quickly as I could。 Not only is it beautifully written, but it is tragically lovely。 I couldn’t put it down and cannot recommend it enough to other literature, Shakespeare fiends。 If you were ever remotely interested in Shakespeare, murder mystery, and dark academia, this book is worth reading。 Even if not, this book is approachable This book got me out of an I-don’t-even-know-how-long reading slump。 It’s awoken that same old childlike love of reading。 I made time for this; tearing through it as quickly as I could。 Not only is it beautifully written, but it is tragically lovely。 I couldn’t put it down and cannot recommend it enough to other literature, Shakespeare fiends。 If you were ever remotely interested in Shakespeare, murder mystery, and dark academia, this book is worth reading。 Even if not, this book is approachable and intriguing regardless of interest or experience with those areas。 This book is a triumph and I hope Rio will write more。 。。。more

Is it a “The Secret History” knockoff? Absolutely。 Is it a good knockoff? Oh, yes, it is。I’ll be mostly comparing “If we were villains” (IWWV) with “The Secret History” (TSH) by Donna Tartt, because there’s just no way around it。 It obviously was heavily inspired by TSH, the two books have pretty much the same structure and character architypes。 I sincerely believe that in order to culturally understand IWWV you should be acquainted with TSH and its impact on the dark academia genre。 Also, TSH i Is it a “The Secret History” knockoff? Absolutely。 Is it a good knockoff? Oh, yes, it is。I’ll be mostly comparing “If we were villains” (IWWV) with “The Secret History” (TSH) by Donna Tartt, because there’s just no way around it。 It obviously was heavily inspired by TSH, the two books have pretty much the same structure and character architypes。 I sincerely believe that in order to culturally understand IWWV you should be acquainted with TSH and its impact on the dark academia genre。 Also, TSH is my favourite book。 Which means that 1) I couldn’t miss a chance to rave about it, and 2) I was destined to be critical about IWWV, TSH's self-proclaimed ideological successor。 Basically, I went into with book not really hoping to like it。 But, oops, I actually very much enjoyed it。That’s said, let us proceed。Setting/atmosphereI’m not into Shakespeare, so I thought that the setting wouldn’t appeal to me。 But I guess good writing can get through taste differences, since I was, like, strongly vibing with all the references。 The book is wonderfully stylized with ‘scenes’ for chapters and play-like dialog sequences。 And apparently random Shakespearean quoting in conversations is really my thing。 I enjoyed the theatre elements in the story, the plays the characters were performing in took up the role of foreshadowing and commented on interpersonal dynamics。Compared to TSH, IWWV’s setting is on the same level, similar but different enough for it to read like an independent novel。 And I was mostly able to ignore the logistical impossibility of such a school actually existing。 A theatre college where you are not allowed to perform anything but Shakespeare, really? In this aspect TSH made more sense, there was only one teacher who was doing his own thing, while the rest of the school was pretty typical。 I myself had a couple of slightly weird teachers throughout my life。 Like that time when our history of Japan professor made us read a book on statistics and then tortured us about how we can apply this knowledge while examining a historical document。 So, TSH was weirdly relatable in a way。 But I digress。CharactersThis is something that IWWV did better than TSH, especially in regards of handling the female characters。 TSH had only one girl in the main cast who served the sole purpose of inducing sexual tension。 The gender ratio in IWWV is reasonable, and the girls are well-rounded characters with actual personalities。 I guess we live in a slightly better world compared to when TSH was published, since now women in literature are genially considered humans。 With that, IWWV draws a noticeable inspiration from TSH’s character architypes, modifying them of course。 Like, Meredith is an upgraded version of Camilla, with the difference that Camilla is a sexual object and Meredith is a sexual object but with a developed personality and inner struggles。 And IWWV’s Richard is basically a combination of TSH’s Henry and Bunny (I have never thought it’s possible, but here we are)。Structure/plotSo, the structure of the two books is the same。 In the prologue we learn that someone died (presumably got killed), then the first half of the book leads to the accident/murder, and the second half is about how the characters deal with their friend’s death。 However, IWWV does this worse in my opinion。 In TSH we are told straight away that Bunny’s going to be killed by his peers。 Literary from the first page。 So the book is not about the how, it’s about the why。 Also, we don’t know what happens after Bunny’s death。 Do the characters get caught? Does anyone go to prison? Read to find out。 IWWV ruins the intrigue from the prologue, the MC literally comes out of prison, so we know that some way or another someone got caught。 Well, we don’t know the victim or the killer, but I figured out the rough plot (including the victim, the killer, the reason for MC’s being in prison) by chapter 2。 Admittedly, this could be because I have read TSH。 But still。 So, is it really a knockoff?Well, yes。 But it is different enough to be its own piece of writing。 I cannot deny the incredible work that went into writing all the references。 The author has made a good use of Rene Girard’s mimesis theory, it was worked nicely into the characters’ dynamic。 I loved the scene of Meredith & James’s repetition/confrontation closer to the end, both of them being the MC’s mimetic objectives。 I almost feel that the whole novel was written just for this scene, and that it’s where the main idea lies。 Also, the book managed to break my heart。 I had to take a moment to calm myself down and let my tears dry up after finishing it。 Overall, definitely would recommend。 It’s a five-star generally speaking。 But more like a 4。75-star in compared to TSH。 But again, TSH is THE favourite book of mine, so 4。75 is as high as it can get。 。。。more

I think he meant only it to reminisce and to perhaps make Oliver feel better about it, to give him some hope。 。。。more

I’m a sucker for a friend group story and was the main reason I picked this book besides the murder mystery aspect。 Put together the characters complimented each other。 Individually though some of them didn’t have much of a personality。 Oliver - our main man。 Told from his pov there is very limited information。 He is supposed to be the most ordinary man in the group。 Not too handsome or talented and always under appreciated but he is the one who just served 10 years in jail for the murder of one I’m a sucker for a friend group story and was the main reason I picked this book besides the murder mystery aspect。 Put together the characters complimented each other。 Individually though some of them didn’t have much of a personality。 Oliver - our main man。 Told from his pov there is very limited information。 He is supposed to be the most ordinary man in the group。 Not too handsome or talented and always under appreciated but he is the one who just served 10 years in jail for the murder of one of the people in the group。James - our hero。 I did quite like James, he seemed the most sensible out of them all。Alexander - the villain。 And also drug addict。 I enjoyed his parts, he seemed like the comedian in the story。Wren - ummm yeah she was very bland to me。 Besides being Richards cousin, she didn’t do much。Richard - our resident #1 man in everything 。 His got it all , the looks, the smile, the acting。 His perfect in every way。 Or so it seems。Filippa - now here’s a character I like。 Filippa is also constantly undermined。 She’s quiet, very conservative but you can always count on her to be there。 Meredith - you wish you could look like her。 The seductress。 She’s basically Richard but In female form。There were also some characters besides the 7 that were very likable。 Like their teacher Frederick that gave me a fatherly vibe to the 7 of them。The dark academia setting was very atmospheric and I felt like I was walking down Dellechers halls myself。 So the book did not disappoint scenery wise。 ButI regret to inform you that I don’t know too much about Shakespeare other than that he wrote Romeo and Juliette and …。。 also he has some very confusing English。 I’m not familiar with the theatre either。 So hence the lower rating。Also the murderer wasn’t a shocker。Unlike that ENDING! Okay this book was absolutely fantastic。 I was not prepared for this experience and I was blown away。 This story was captivating and haunting from beginning to end。 It was dark and theatrical and it made me want to read Shakespeare。 It combined my need for dark and kinda twisted story with a dramatic and thespian setting I didn't know I needed。 I literally had to take a day after finishing this book to process the ending because it left me speechless。 Okay this book was absolutely fantastic。 I was not prepared for this experience and I was blown away。 This story was captivating and haunting from beginning to end。 It was dark and theatrical and it made me want to read Shakespeare。 It combined my need for dark and kinda twisted story with a dramatic and thespian setting I didn't know I needed。 I literally had to take a day after finishing this book to process the ending because it left me speechless。 。。。more
