Summary

A Stonewall Honor Book

From Stonewall and Lambda Award–winning author Kacen Callender comes a revelatory YA novel about a transgender teen grappling with identity and self-discovery while falling in love for the first time。

Felix Love has never been in love—and, yes, he’s painfully aware of the irony。 He desperately wants to know what it’s like and why it seems so easy for everyone but him to find someone。 What’s worse is that, even though he is proud of his identity, Felix also secretly fears that he’s one marginalization too many—Black, queer, and transgender—to ever get his own happily-ever-after。

When an anonymous student begins sending him transphobic messages—after publicly posting Felix’s deadname alongside images of him before he transitioned—Felix comes up with a plan for revenge。 What he didn’t count on: his catfish scenario landing him in a quasi–love triangle。。。。

But as he navigates his complicated feelings, Felix begins a journey of questioning and self-discovery that helps redefine his most important relationship: how he feels about himself。

Felix Ever After is an honest and layered story about identity, falling in love, and recognizing the love you deserve。

"Felix is attending an ultracompetitive arts summer program to have a better shot at a full scholarship to Brown when someone posts Felix’s dead name beside photos of him, pre-transition, in the school’s lobby。 Felix’s plot to get revenge throws him onto the path of love and self-discovery。" (Publishers Weekly, "An Anti-Racist Children's and YA Reading List")

Maybe a 4。5。 I really loved this book! I liked how the main characters were real and quite messy。 I think when reading YA as an adult you have to remember that teenagers make mistakes and are selfish and obsess about things which you feel don’t matter as an adult。 I felt this book portrayed that but I didn’t feel bored reading it。 I loved the explorations of gender and identity and I think a lot of people will see themselves and relate to this。

I can't even begin to express how this book impacted me。 It's one of the easiest 5 stars I've given, and the first YA contemporary/romance book that has impacted me without needing to put it in perspective since I'm in my mid twenties and the typical teen drama doesn't sit well with me。 But this one is special。I went into it having read reviews that liked the book but thought Felix was a bit too vindictive or that they didn't like him because of the decision to get revenge when he's attacked。 I I can't even begin to express how this book impacted me。 It's one of the easiest 5 stars I've given, and the first YA contemporary/romance book that has impacted me without needing to put it in perspective since I'm in my mid twenties and the typical teen drama doesn't sit well with me。 But this one is special。I went into it having read reviews that liked the book but thought Felix was a bit too vindictive or that they didn't like him because of the decision to get revenge when he's attacked。 I thought, okay, so this might be another book about a teenager who makes enormous, dramatic, unreasonable mistakes, but trans people are allowed to tell their messy teen stories too。 I wanted to read it, and the cover is so pretty, so unapologetically trans, so loud and beautiful in a way I've never seen anywhere else, that I bought myself a paperback。And wow, do I disagree with the criticism。Felix makes mistakes, yeah, but everything makes sense。 He deals with so much, and does so in a way that's both convoluted but also so understandable。 I cared so much for him, rooted for him, and his decisions made sense even if they weren't necessarily the best a couple of times。 I do think there's only one thing he does that's morally wrong (still understandable given what happened to him and that he's only seventeen), and that's pretty soon into the book。 Every choice he makes after is about trying to find himself after a lifetime of confusion and hurt and feeling undeserving。 He should be allowed to figure himself and his feelings out, and as he slowly does, all I cared was to see him happy。Aside from Felix, Ezra and Leah are both amazing, lovely characters, people that were fiercely supportive。 Ezra is willing to burn down the world for Felix。 Throughout the book, Felix has to deal with pretty objectively awful situations, with hate and erasure even within the LGBTQ+ community, even within the bubble of queer kids in his summer arts program, but he also has a support system of people who defend him and challenge any instance of misgendering or hate。 I teared up a few times throughout the story, with the support group, with Felix's dad, with Pride。 This book is so gloriously written for trans and nonbinary people, for trans joy, and it's beautiful。 As a queer person that is cisgender, I connected so much with the story in ways that transcend particular identities (but oh, do I know how it feels to be proud of your queerness but not completely sure what exactly your label is, if you even have any that fits), and I am convinced that this book is so necessary for teenagers to find, both for trans and nonbinary people, for those questioning their identity, those who belong to the queer community, or simply anyone, because it's so important to read about identities other than your own and put yourself in their shoes (in Felix's case, said shoes filled with sharpie doodles)。 The descriptions of art and the element of art itself helping Felix find motivation and confidence in himself and who he is are also breathtaking and so seamlessly done。 The novel is raw, fierce, messy, so real。 It's a journey of self discovery and it's heartbreaking at times but so uplifting。 Entertaining and well written, yes, but so much more。 Also, there's a cute cat。 TW: (view spoiler)[ Transphobia, public use of dead name/pre-transition pictures, catfishing, misgendering, parental neglect, discussion of parental emotional abuse + disowning, cyber-bullying, under-age drinking and smoking (both cigarettes and pot)。 (hide spoiler)]Rep: (view spoiler)[ Black, trans demiboy queer MC, Black Bengali mlm LI, gay LI, nonbinary and trans side characters, many significant characters of diverse identities (lesbian, achillean, sapphic, gay, mixed race, Black, Puerto Rican)。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

This is about Felix Love who is transgender and wants to be in love。 There is a gallery of the old Felix before when he was a girl and sets out to find who it is。 Also Felix believes it’s Declan Keane who done it and starts messaging him and they get to talking。 Ezra is Felix’s best friend and is secretly in love with him we find out。 Felix wants to be an artist and go to brown and is struggling creatively。 I thought that Felix and Declan would get together considering that they were taking but This is about Felix Love who is transgender and wants to be in love。 There is a gallery of the old Felix before when he was a girl and sets out to find who it is。 Also Felix believes it’s Declan Keane who done it and starts messaging him and they get to talking。 Ezra is Felix’s best friend and is secretly in love with him we find out。 Felix wants to be an artist and go to brown and is struggling creatively。 I thought that Felix and Declan would get together considering that they were taking but I was glad that Felix and Ezra get together。 Loved it。 。。。more

This is my absolute favourite book I love it so much! I related to Felix in certain ways, and I love how the author talked about gender - lots of the gender struggles Felix was going through I could relate to。 I absolutely loved his and Ezras relationship, and I was very glad at how the romance played out。 This is such a good book everyone needs to read it !

Until the final 50 pages, I loved this book so much。The characters are flawed and complex。 They hurt each other without intending it, still mess things up when it comes to identity and it really adds so much to the emotional investment。The plot is full of unexpected turns and develops into a sweet romance that is full of homoerotic tension and angst。The dialogue sometimes felt like it's trying to educate me rather than driving the plot/character development forward and I think that could have be Until the final 50 pages, I loved this book so much。The characters are flawed and complex。 They hurt each other without intending it, still mess things up when it comes to identity and it really adds so much to the emotional investment。The plot is full of unexpected turns and develops into a sweet romance that is full of homoerotic tension and angst。The dialogue sometimes felt like it's trying to educate me rather than driving the plot/character development forward and I think that could have been woven into the text more subtly but it didn't bother me that much。Now we get to the final fifty pages。 Something happens there that just renders the rest of the plot entirely pointless。 All of the efforts and development of the previous pages are for nothing because they are just a tool for Felix to figure out something else and I hated that。 (view spoiler)[(I'm talking about how Declan, the one this book spends the most time developing Felix's romance arc with, just becomes a means for Felix to find out that he is supposed to be in love with his best friend。) (hide spoiler)]All in all, this book is a quick ride through a lot of intense emotions that I didn't know I had and, until the aforementioned final pages, was really enjoyable for me and I recommend this book to everyone who wants to read a queer love story with well-written characters and a lot of tension。 。。。more

That was fun! Cute, cute love story, coming of age, self discovery, first-person POV, diverse characters, a mystery to solve - many of my favorite YA fiction elements。 Plus I learned more about trans identities- perfect for June。 Read while at LAX, on Maui, and on Big Island。 Headed to a Moorpark LFL next week。

It took me a while to get invested in the story and the characters, but it was an overall good read。 Felix Ever After holds some important messages that make it worth the read。“It’s easier to accept hurt and pain, sometimes, than love and acceptance。”

This was such a beautiful read。 I loved this book with my whole being。 Identity is so hard to define, love is brutal but beautiful and it all manifests itself in different ways。 Learn it all from Felix。

my official June 1st LGBTQIA+ book for pride month and i absolutely Loved this book。。 I could really relate to a lot of the things the characters were feeling and saying about labels and sexual orientation etc。。。 This book really did hit close to home for me

I loved this book so much! The ending was beautifully written and really brought the story full circle。 This is a great read in general because it feels/is so deeply personal to the author, but is even better for anyone who is questioning their identity or is struggling to find their way in the world。

If I could, I'd give this book a 3。5。 It gripped me more than I thought it would, going into it, yet I also found parts of it to be pretty predictable as it went along。 If I could, I'd give this book a 3。5。 It gripped me more than I thought it would, going into it, yet I also found parts of it to be pretty predictable as it went along。 。。。more

A book about a trans non-binary character written by a trans non-binary writer???????? COUNT ME INNNNNN And I actually did love it。 I enjoyed the writing (even if 1st person narrative isnt really my thing), the developments, the approach to topics that some lgbt+ people find hard to talk about, everything! And being a trans non-binary person myself I did cry many times。。。

As it is pride month I wanted to dedicate my time to reading LGBTQ+ books, and this one did not dissapoint。 I love how the author didn't just focus on trans man/demiboy, but they also ensured that they were working class, a person of colour and gay。 So many voices were listened to throughout this book and it makes me so happy that a lot of people will be finally seeing characters like themselves。 Now, the main storyline was amazing。 It focused on such important issues and the root of the transph As it is pride month I wanted to dedicate my time to reading LGBTQ+ books, and this one did not dissapoint。 I love how the author didn't just focus on trans man/demiboy, but they also ensured that they were working class, a person of colour and gay。 So many voices were listened to throughout this book and it makes me so happy that a lot of people will be finally seeing characters like themselves。 Now, the main storyline was amazing。 It focused on such important issues and the root of the transphobia was something that needed to be discussed。 It made me so angry and my heart was breaking alongside Felix's and I just wanted to scream for him。 Following his journey into self-discovery, handling trauma and bigotry was beautiful。 This was such a positive story and I am so glad its out there。 Highly recommend。 。。。more

Felix is kind of a dick。 He is so judgmental to everyone he goes to school with and to the people he hangs out with。 He is especially judgy to his best friend Ezra all because Ezra has parents who have money。 Felix was also a dick to his dad。 His mom didn’t just leave him, she left his dad as well and his dad is doing everything he can to give Felix a good life。

A true hero’s journey! Oh my goodness。 I am crying for the second time this year after reading a book。 Felix has forever changed my life as a black, gay man。 Every character was beautifully flawed, and I thoroughly enjoyed how Kacen took us on a journey of self-awareness, authenticity, and discovery。 Felix’s ability to celebrate who he is and live that is something I am learning how to do at 32 years old。 This book is for every black and brown queer kid who doesn’t conform to others’ expectation A true hero’s journey! This was amazing。 I want more Felix Love in my life。 I can’t even imagine how I would react if I read this back in high school。 I love how they didn’t go with the angry mean lesbian trope。 I love Felix and Ez’s friendship。 Felix and his father, my heart。 Too precious! 💖
