At the turn of the century, three prominent families shaped the construction of modern-day Gotham City。 Now a madman with 300 pounds of explosives and a century-old grudge is threatening to bring it all crashing down。 Beginning with the simultaneous destruction of some of Gotham's oldest bridges, the mysterious villain is targeting the holdings and legacies of Gotham's most notable families--including the Waynes。

To uncover the truth behind the villainous Architect and his link to the city's violent past, Batman unites with Robin, Red Robin and Batman Inc。's Hong Kong operative, the Black Bat。 But can they stop their new foe's plans before it's too late? The future of Gotham started with an explosion, and it could end the very same way。。。

I don't know why but now I feel these stories already set on a well known Batman world are better than those always trying to 're-imaginate' Batman for the first time。Here we don't have Bruce, but a more futuristic world with a lot more vigilantes。 That's a little too much (in this case 4 superheroes saving the day against one single villain), but still its good to see new characters and new villains and new points。。。 even new jokes。 It's a little better than always reading about Joker or any ot I don't know why but now I feel these stories already set on a well known Batman world are better than those always trying to 're-imaginate' Batman for the first time。Here we don't have Bruce, but a more futuristic world with a lot more vigilantes。 That's a little too much (in this case 4 superheroes saving the day against one single villain), but still its good to see new characters and new villains and new points。。。 even new jokes。 It's a little better than always reading about Joker or any other main villains。The story is good as the steam punk and industrial Gotham goes, even the final plot was cool。 。。。more

A pleasent read, with a good mystery and plot。 The Bat family members interactions is fun and well written, but the story is too short to make that much of an impression。

What made me buy this book was simply the Batman era in which it is set, Dick Grayson is my favorite character and if I have the opportunity to read something new about him being the protagonist I do it, but honestly I couldn't connect with this story。 It's basically a story that encompasses Gotham City's past and present, the origins of all the elite families like the Waynes, Elliots, Cobblepots, and Kanes, as well as the not-so-elite ones like the "Gates" (basically the city's architects) a What made me buy this book was simply the Batman era in which it is set, Dick Grayson is my favorite character and if I have the opportunity to read something new about him being the protagonist I do it, but honestly I couldn't connect with this story。 It's basically a story that encompasses Gotham City's past and present, the origins of all the elite families like the Waynes, Elliots, Cobblepots, and Kanes, as well as the not-so-elite ones like the "Gates" (basically the city's architects) and a mystery from the past (a steam punk villain) that can only be solved if all the former Robins work together to unmask the situation 。。。 The good:* I found the art simple but mixed with te color makes the landscapes so beautiful, the city setting is perfect。 * The writers understand Dick Grayson well and portray his strengths and insecurities in an impeccable way。 * The interaction of all the Robins together is always appreciated。The bad:* The book is narrated in two timelines and that's not bad, but it reveals too much from the beginning and makes the ending very predictable。* The art in terms of the characters is good, but I personally did not like it。 * I understand that the additional story goes hand in hand with that "Batman Inc。" stuff DC were trying to set years ago, but it sucks。。。It's not a bad book but I didn't really enjoy it 。。。 。。。more

Batman Gates Of Gotham is a quick and a historical story about Gotham’s background, I found it to be quite interesting and also the action element also made it fun to read, just a nice quick read from author Scott Snyder and the team for this book, the cover gallery artwork is really nice and the book artwork is also pretty nice, I liked it, if you wanna know more about Gotham’s history I recommend this book!

3。5 stars。 i liked this! it really focused on the history of gotham as a city, and it was nice to see some of my favorite memories as the bat family working together。 didn’t read the annual’s because the detective comics annual couldn’t hold my interest。 the art was nice, but sometimes hard for me to see what was going on because of dark coloring。

I love the use of Dick Grayson as Batman。 Snyder seems to really understand what makes Grayson tick and it illustrates the issues that he has while being Batman。 It is a large task to take on, but he is doing it his way。

I was fascinated at the prospect of getting to learn some actual history of Gotham City - who built it and how it ended up the way it was - but ended up disappointed with how limited this vision turned out to be: it concerned mostly of one (admittedly influential) character's personal history in it all, and most of it involved a bomb threat in the present day。 Shame。 I was fascinated at the prospect of getting to learn some actual history of Gotham City - who built it and how it ended up the way it was - but ended up disappointed with how limited this vision turned out to be: it concerned mostly of one (admittedly influential) character's personal history in it all, and most of it involved a bomb threat in the present day。 Shame。 。。。more

Didn't love this one, but didn't dislike it either。 I really just prefer Bruce as Batman over Dick。 The historical flashbacks to the Gate brothers was used a little too often, it probably could have been done in maybe one, but there are several throughout。 Also wasn't a fan of Penguin's character design, and there were a few panels of other characters that were strangely drawn。 Extra points for Tim, Damian, and Cass' relationship。 I read this solely for Red Robin and Robin, and was not disappoin Didn't love this one, but didn't dislike it either。 I really just prefer Bruce as Batman over Dick。 The historical flashbacks to the Gate brothers was used a little too often, it probably could have been done in maybe one, but there are several throughout。 Also wasn't a fan of Penguin's character design, and there were a few panels of other characters that were strangely drawn。 Extra points for Tim, Damian, and Cass' relationship。 I read this solely for Red Robin and Robin, and was not disappointed。 Didn't know Black Bat was in it, so that was a plus seeing her。 。。。more

This was a really nice self-contained story。 It’s about the history of Gotham and the people that built it, and their descendants。 It gives even more background to the world of Gotham which I appreciate。 I also like the duality to the story of Gotham’s history。 Two sides of the same coin, both blaming the other, and the story you believe depends on who wronged you。The art is solid。 Distinct, bold lines with popping colors, while retaining the requisite murk for a Batman book。 The only negative I This was a really nice self-contained story。 It’s about the history of Gotham and the people that built it, and their descendants。 It gives even more background to the world of Gotham which I appreciate。 I also like the duality to the story of Gotham’s history。 Two sides of the same coin, both blaming the other, and the story you believe depends on who wronged you。The art is solid。 Distinct, bold lines with popping colors, while retaining the requisite murk for a Batman book。 The only negative I might add is that at the very end it felt a bit usual-caper to me。 I enjoyed it nonetheless though。 Add another rogue to the gallery, along with a W to Snyder’s catalogue。 。。。more

Great story that sees Dick Grayson as Batman with Red Robin, Robin and Cassandra Cain, trying to learn the history of Gotham to solve the mystery of 'The Architect' who was targetting buildings that were built by the founding fathers of Gotham。 There is also a story about the batman of France at the end written by Kyle Higgins which is fairly entertaining。 Issues included: BATMAN GATES OF GOTHAM #1-5, BATMAN ANNUAL #28 and DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #12。 Great story that sees Dick Grayson as Batman with Red Robin, Robin and Cassandra Cain, trying to learn the history of Gotham to solve the mystery of 'The Architect' who was targetting buildings that were built by the founding fathers of Gotham。 There is also a story about the batman of France at the end written by Kyle Higgins which is fairly entertaining。 Issues included: BATMAN GATES OF GOTHAM #1-5, BATMAN ANNUAL #28 and DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #12。 。。。more

A little short but not that bad。 As far as Snyder's other Dick Grayson Batman stories go, "Black Mirror" is better。 And that's mainly because the main character of this story isn't Batman, but rather Gotham and the families that built her。 If the story had been longer maybe Snyder could have explored Grayson's doubts at his success as a Batman。 A little short but not that bad。 As far as Snyder's other Dick Grayson Batman stories go, "Black Mirror" is better。 And that's mainly because the main character of this story isn't Batman, but rather Gotham and the families that built her。 If the story had been longer maybe Snyder could have explored Grayson's doubts at his success as a Batman。 。。。more

I was honestly pretty disappointed by this one。 To be fair, I went into it from Black Mirror having been convinced this was more Dick Grayson as Batman by Snyder, but that's not the case。 Despite having Snyder's name front and center everywhere, this is a Kyle Higgins book。 That's not to say he's terrible, but this story wasn't anything to write home about, and nor was the writing。 I was never intrigued and it hardly ever felt like a mystery, since there was no suspense and the reader knew what I was honestly pretty disappointed by this one。 To be fair, I went into it from Black Mirror having been convinced this was more Dick Grayson as Batman by Snyder, but that's not the case。 Despite having Snyder's name front and center everywhere, this is a Kyle Higgins book。 That's not to say he's terrible, but this story wasn't anything to write home about, and nor was the writing。 I was never intrigued and it hardly ever felt like a mystery, since there was no suspense and the reader knew what was going on basically the entire time while the bat-family stumble like chicken with their heads cut off。Although the story was very bare bones, there was something charming about the artwork。 I was never completely sold on the interiors, but the covers we're always crazy beautiful! They were like stained glass windows in churches。 But I wasn't a big fan of the bat-family。 There was just something off about their faces and body movement。 I absolutely hated the action。 There wasn't a single good fight, instead I was completely confused by every single fight scene, as characters seemingly teleported around and kept showing up behind their opponents constantly。 I never knew what the hell was going on, and I have no idea who's to blame。I really can't recommend this, with so many other amazing Batman stories out there, this one just isn't really worth your time。 。。。more

enjoyable! the plot was concise, tight, and didn't wander off into tangents。 overall it was perhaps less interesting than other batman stories have been, (view spoiler)[i。e。, this was a classic things-blow-up and people-are-trying-to-get-revenge-for-old-dead-family-members (hide spoiler)], but which such a short run i imagine anything more complicated would've simply been too overwhelming。 (view spoiler)[i will say i was disappointed in the stigmatization of psychosis and its use yet again as a enjoyable! the plot was concise, tight, and didn't wander off into tangents。 overall it was perhaps less interesting than other batman stories have been, (view spoiler)[i。e。, this was a classic things-blow-up and people-are-trying-to-get-revenge-for-old-dead-family-members (hide spoiler)], but which such a short run i imagine anything more complicated would've simply been too overwhelming。 (view spoiler)[i will say i was disappointed in the stigmatization of psychosis and its use yet again as a vehicle for destruction。 before the truth was revealed, i was much more interested in the idea that alan wayne was actually an asshole。 i do think thomas cobblepot did kill his brother, though。 some great tidbits of rich people controlling a massive city。 i wish they had done a little more visually with the idea of an infestation of evil beneath a city in the clouds。 (hide spoiler)] the dialogue left a little to be desired, but nothing egregious。 i thought the overlapping stories (aside from the obvious plot relevance) brought up wonderful parallels between the gate brothers and the batfamily drake-wayne-grayson brothers (a fact brought to my attention by my wonderful and intelligent friend ana)。 the art wasn't horrible -- certainly the first three issues were not my favorite, but dick did look very pretty, which was gratifying。 the fourth issue including dustin nguyen, one of my favorite artists, was excellent。 cass looked wonderful。by far my favorite parts were the batfamily interactions。 while i love team-ups and seeing my batfamily with other heroes, my personal favorite runs are where there's a combination of them working together by themselves。 i thought everyone was characterized well -- notably, dick's insecurities about being batman, cass being able to read body language, tim coding, damian's insecurity about his position。。。in life, really。 i was especially thrilled to see tim and damian working together, even if it was only for, like, half an issue。 frankly i'm really upset this was the year right before reboot number one, because it really feels like the company was beginning to hit their stride with characterizations and dynamics。 tim especially felt like he was growing into a competent hero of his own, while damian had been starting to work toward an outright confrontation of these issues。 i really think a tim and damian team-up would be so cool, and i think it could've realistically happened if the writers had them be on more missions together and interact more。 a slow attachment is possible。 but this is all moot because new52。 and then rebirth。 lol。it's also always great to see damian and cass interact, due to their unique backgrounds。 cass really brings out damian's fears and anxieties into full force, as he tries to downplay her abilities and achievements which, as tim adroitly notes, is because "the only real reason you don't like her。。。is that she's just one more person your father picked over you。" it's so nice to have writers who understand。 bruce showing up at the end was funny because the timeline is so weird and confusing。 and speaking of bruce。。。dick saying he could be batman/bruce saying he could be a better batman than him。。。i take issue。 i think dick can perform as batman, absolutely, but i do not think he has the mentality to maintain a batman persona longer than what he did。 i'm assuming this little bit in the dialogue was written for a nice conclusion, a feel-good answer to dick's insecurities lining the run (and also to allow for bruce to mention that he's coming back to gotham), so i get it, but i don't agree。 i think, actually, the best batman to follow bruce would be tim -- something dick actually notes earlier in the run as well。 i could talk at length about why, but i'm sure most people understand my thoughts and there is only a tangential relevance to these actual five issues。 overall fun, cute, i love when our squad of bat-related people are yelling at/laughing with/traumatizing/etc each other; a world rife with emotions and dynamics! 。。。more

This was my first experience reading a Scott Snyder-penned Batman story。 Overall, I enjoyed it。 I like the Batman stories that have some historical bent to them。 This one gets into the early days of Gotham during the Robber Baron era。 Bruce Wayne is elsewhere, so Dick Grayson is the Batman, and he's working with Wayne's son Damian as Robin, Black Bat, and Red Robin。 I enjoyed all the characters and their treatments in this book -- they were all new to me。 Definitely enjoyed the steam punk art di This was my first experience reading a Scott Snyder-penned Batman story。 Overall, I enjoyed it。 I like the Batman stories that have some historical bent to them。 This one gets into the early days of Gotham during the Robber Baron era。 Bruce Wayne is elsewhere, so Dick Grayson is the Batman, and he's working with Wayne's son Damian as Robin, Black Bat, and Red Robin。 I enjoyed all the characters and their treatments in this book -- they were all new to me。 Definitely enjoyed the steam punk art direction as well。 。。。more

。。。more
