Summary

There was a time when IQ was considered the leading determinant of success。 In this fascinating book, based on brain and behavioral research, Daniel Goleman argues that our IQ-idolizing view of intelligence is far too narrow。 Instead, Goleman makes the case for "emotional intelligence" being the strongest indicator of human success。 He defines emotional intelligence in terms of self-awareness, altruism, personal motivation, empathy, and the ability to love and be loved by friends, partners, and family members。 People who possess high emotional intelligence are the people who truly succeed in work as well as play, building flourishing careers and lasting, meaningful relationships。 Because emotional intelligence isn't fixed at birth, Goleman outlines how adults as well as parents of young children can sow the seeds。

An important book of a necessary part of intelligence that should be focused on more, as the book details emotional intelligence multi-faceted virtues。 The prose is not too difficult to consume either。I found this helpful and informative, with quite a bit of important information being retained。 It's from the mid-nineties, but not really dated, in fact, sadly, a lot of the horror brought on by incidents caused by emotional illiteracies still continues。 Getting this book and absorbing its informa An important book of a necessary part of intelligence that should be focused on more, as the book details emotional intelligence multi-faceted virtues。 The prose is not too difficult to consume either。I found this helpful and informative, with quite a bit of important information being retained。 It's from the mid-nineties, but not really dated, in fact, sadly, a lot of the horror brought on by incidents caused by emotional illiteracies still continues。 Getting this book and absorbing its information would be a worthy and intelligent thing to do。 。。。more

Love this book。 I read it when my kids were little and so glad I read it again。 EQ vs IQ and why EQ is so important。

I didn't pull a lot of quotes from this (I read the 1995 version the library had), but I still found it interesting, thorough, and easy to comprehend。 I like that Goleman examines why metaphorical thinking is effective and how feelings relate to cognitive functioning。 More educators should be introduced to these concepts! Not an esay read but an important one。 To us humans - being highly social animals - emotional and social skills are the most important skills to learn to succeed and thrive in life。 Goleman bringes evidence to this - solid evidence。 Now all we need is for the rest of the world to catch up。

Emotional intelligence is perhaps the most important factor in helping us lead fulfilled lives。 Compared to IQ, it is a better predictor of academic success, job performance and life success。 And, unlike IQ, we can increase our emotional intelligence throughout life。

This book is right up my alley and one of the main reasons why I enjoy non-fiction so much。 I highly recommend this, mostly for those who are responsible for kids emotional growth (i。e。 parents, teachers)。

Despite the groundbreaking topic and good analysis of educational conducts, the book includes too many common senses while is lacking of fresh insights

Gives you the skeketon of EQ, gives great insights such as the consequences of not having EQ and how having a foul mood affects thinking。 I found these helpful。 In my opinion, explaining the domains of EQ in a little more detailed and structured way would have been better, like having a summary at the end of each chapter highlighting important points。 Overall a decent book。

Not at all。。。 This is a hard core science book。 It begins by taking a deep dive into the neurology of the brain, and how different circuits are wired to perform different functions。 While some played a critical role in the evolutionary process of the human survival, some of these "wirings" may impair one's life when they function the old way, in the modern context。And along sixteen chapters of the book, Goleman takes us in an extremely interesting journey throughout the nature of those functions, how they affect our daily lives, and eventually comes to some conclusions on how to guide those "emotional" functions of our brains instead of having them guiding us。 He breaks down the concept of "emotions", he breaks down the concept of "intelligence", and he goes through the basic elements of emotional intelligence, and how they are displayed in practice in different contexts, and finally, some insights on how individuals can be emotionally coached into having better guided emotional functions。If you are interested, have a good command of English language, and an abundance of time (or a constant small chunk of time, DAILY!), grab the book, and take your own dive into the world of emotional intelligence!Bonne voyage! 。。。more

A great book on understanding the role emotions have in our life and in the development of children。 It does a good job at explaning what EI is, emotional litteracy and on the importance of improving it in our society, in our families and in our schools。 I was expecting the book to be a guide on how to develop EI for myself but I would consider this book to be more descriptive than guiding。

Highly recommended for anybody who wants to improve the understanding on how to use emotions in their favor rather giving into them。 Recognizing what emotion plays in yourself or others in the moment takes away the power the emotion has on you。 I found this idea the most powerful in the book。 Of course there are many more amazing ideas which can be easily applied in the day to day life I was reading this book in parallel to “Crucial conversations” which were supporting well one another

Contiene información muy útil, y por lo que podemos concluir a día de hoy, atemporal。 Aunque pienso que te debe interesar mucho la psicología para que la lectura te sea amena。

I’ll come out the gate with my rating and give the book a 3。5 out of 5。 It’s not an exciting book, but rather an interesting book。 It starts with what I described as a slow, but interesting and difficult beginning, with technical terms which may, or may not interest you, but provide you with some foundation going forward。The content provided good context to refer to, and allowed me to reflect。 Speaking to my younger and future self。 I will definitely look over the book again for reference。 But a I’ll come out the gate with my rating and give the book a 3。5 out of 5。 It’s not an exciting book, but rather an interesting book。 It starts with what I described as a slow, but interesting and difficult beginning, with technical terms which may, or may not interest you, but provide you with some foundation going forward。The content provided good context to refer to, and allowed me to reflect。 Speaking to my younger and future self。 I will definitely look over the book again for reference。 But also in moving forward in being a good teacher, person, and perhaps father one day。 I would HIGHLY recommend the book to someone in the education sector, as it provides great content, context and was a good read from that perspective of educating yourself。For me, the passages which were really poignant were:The cost of emotional illiteracy -*The Fight & Shooting in school over something trivialSchool for bullies -*Working with children and seeing resultsAn emotional malaise & preventing aggression & cost of modernity (rising rates of depression) -*The definitions*Dana’s story*Depression with children*And something which I question。。。Is it due to our values why we are becoming more depressed。And my favorite and final chapter in the book (schooling the emotions), which really swung this book in my favor, as to its fantastic examples, content and context of educating emotional intelligence with young learners。Other than the final chapter。 There were good passages which formed my view, to which I would recommend you to read, and share。 。。。more

This book is amazing。 I even took notes of the eye-opening facts I want to remember for the future。For example, it literally gives a list of remedies for when you are depressed, which is precious。And it made me understand better how our brain works, which are the basis for addiction, why we get angry, and finally suggestions about how to control mood swings。

It is a great book and I recommend it to anyone。 It’s informative and well structured。 It mentions a good number of research studies and programs applied in the US。 The author starts first by stating the biological anatomy of emotions and how it’s all shaped into our brains。 Then continues discussing different aspects of the subject。 I especially liked the attractive way of dividing each chapter into smaller sections to discuss one idea; each starts with a social study or a story and then builds It is a great book and I recommend it to anyone。 It’s informative and well structured。 It mentions a good number of research studies and programs applied in the US。 The author starts first by stating the biological anatomy of emotions and how it’s all shaped into our brains。 Then continues discussing different aspects of the subject。 I especially liked the attractive way of dividing each chapter into smaller sections to discuss one idea; each starts with a social study or a story and then builds on it and reaches the result or an open question at the end。 That made the book smooth eventhough it's scientific。Emotional Intelligence is a very important topic which totally deserves to be taught in schools in each grade。 It’s simply make your life better as a child and as an adult。I was impressed about those programs mentioned in the book which aimed to teach kids IE skills, however, it’s still not the general rule for every school and every place and every country。 In my opinion, it’s not a secondary topic nor less important than math and physics。 It’s very needed skill which is acquired gradually since early ages。 In simple words, emotional intelligence is a collection of several points:- self awareness: one's ability to define one’s own feelings and understand oneself。 - managing emotions: anger and fear 。。 etc- handling anger, stress and anxiety- responding to adversities and how to deal with setbacks and recover from bad situations- managing relationships- Having empathy: reading emotions and much more! Very hard to summarise this book indeed。 I enjoyed reading this book and learned a lot。 。。。more
