Summary

Welcome back to Virgin River with the books that inspired the hit Netflix series…

John “Preacher” Middleton is closing Jack’s Bar when a woman and her young son come in out of the wet night。 A marine who has seen his share of pain, Preacher knows a crisis when he sees one—the woman is covered in bruises。 He wants to protect them, and to punish whoever did this, but he knows immediately that this is more than just instinct。 Paige Lassiter has stirred up emotions in this gentle giant of a man—emotions that he has never allowed himself to feel。

Then Paige’s ex-husband turns up in Virgin River。 And if there’s one thing the marines’ motto of Semper Fidelis—always faithful—has taught Preacher, it’s that some things are worth fighting for。

I quite liked Virgin River, but this second book was a disappointing read。 The structure of the book feels so odd, at first being a book exclusively about Paige and her story, then halfway through switching characters and barely mentioning her name ever again。 Within the first words of each chapter, I feel that I could write the rest of it with how predictable it was。

Can't wait to get the next few in this series, great easy beach reads with returning characters that I love。 I really do love this series。 Can't wait to get the next few in this series, great easy beach reads with returning characters that I love。 I really do love this series。 。。。more

Reading these has me wondering what will come of the Netflix series。 The first two books develop the characters in ways the show hasn't。 I really appreciate the vast differences between the book versus the show。 Neither feel predictable。 I don't know which Preacher I prefer 😅 Reading these has me wondering what will come of the Netflix series。 The first two books develop the characters in ways the show hasn't。 I really appreciate the vast differences between the book versus the show。 Neither feel predictable。 I don't know which Preacher I prefer 😅 。。。more

As good as the first book!Robyn Carr has a gift for character development and describing the emotional tenor of a situation。 I loved the second book as much as the first and can’t wait to start on the third one!

I had a lot of bad things to say about Virgin River, the first book in this series。 I love the Netflix show。 I'm hooked on those stories, those actors as the main characters, and so on。So, even though I really still like the show a lot more than the books, this one didn't make me angry like the first one did。 I liked the way Preacher was portrayed。 And I really do hope we can get more of him and Paige on the show。 I had a lot of bad things to say about Virgin River, the first book in this series。 I love the Netflix show。 I'm hooked on those stories, those actors as the main characters, and so on。So, even though I really still like the show a lot more than the books, this one didn't make me angry like the first one did。 I liked the way Preacher was portrayed。 And I really do hope we can get more of him and Paige on the show。 。。。more

There wasn’t a lot of action until the end but I still enjoyed this one。 And I’m still ready to move on to book 3 in the series。

This story explores the heart, good and bad。I'm in love with John Preacher Middleton。 The world needs more like him。He rescues Paige, who reluctenly (sic) accepts his help and his heart。 This story explores the heart, good and bad。I'm in love with John Preacher Middleton。 The world needs more like him。He rescues Paige, who reluctenly (sic) accepts his help and his heart。 。。。more

I couldn't empathize with the characters in this book and as a result, it wasn't the page-turner I'd hoped it would be。 This is the last in the series that I will be reading。 I couldn't empathize with the characters in this book and as a result, it wasn't the page-turner I'd hoped it would be。 This is the last in the series that I will be reading。 。。。more

Rehashed content, no novelty。 Netflix made a better job of the series 😒

This book really spoke to my "good guys win and bad guys lose" ethos。 I liked the development and a refreshing display of testosterone when nothing else would work。 Trying to say I liked it and will read more of this series! Way to preachy。。。 poor plot line used as an excuse to preach a version of "good sexual relations"。 Way to preachy。。。 poor plot line used as an excuse to preach a version of "good sexual relations"。 。。。more

Virgin River: where all the women are small and strong, all the men are emotionally stunted, and all the inconvenient-to-romance-plot babies are conveniently miscarried。

entertaining enough, but rather over-the-top true love connection

4。75 ⭐️ I really enjoyed the second instalment to this series! I definitely prefer it to the first。 I loved the character development throughout and especially the new character Paige。 I found her experiences authentic and genuine。 This book definitely needs to come with a trigger warning for domestic abuse and in-utero deaths。

Natassia Wright

I was hoping for it to focus more on the two main characters from the first book and continue to build upon their relationship。 But after I got over half way in it started to get good。

Guns, home childbirth and tragedy: if you'd prefer to read an escapist romance without amniotic fluids or bullet wounds, this book isn't for you。 Shelter Mountain delves into the sexy and unsexy depths of human bodies and relationships and focuses on the minutiae of daily life in a small fictional rural area in northern California。While the TV show tends to be a bit better written than the books (so shoot me), one thing this book in the series does better is a slightly more realistic depiction o Guns, home childbirth and tragedy: if you'd prefer to read an escapist romance without amniotic fluids or bullet wounds, this book isn't for you。 Shelter Mountain delves into the sexy and unsexy depths of human bodies and relationships and focuses on the minutiae of daily life in a small fictional rural area in northern California。While the TV show tends to be a bit better written than the books (so shoot me), one thing this book in the series does better is a slightly more realistic depiction of a victim of domestic violence (DV) on the run with a child。 It always struck me as unlikely that Paige would be able to fund a new house, a new food truck business, and all those fake identity documents she had in the Netflix series: you get none of that in the book。 She has next to nothing with her, she's been through the process of pressing charges against her abusive spouse and has stayed in DV shelters in the past, and the system has failed to protect her。 However, it helps that her husband in this version is not a cop。 I'm mildly annoyed it's hinted Paige's husband's abusive behaviors are caused by his drug use, because abuse doesn't require a chemical catalyst。 It's a choice someone consciously makes to maintain power and control over someone else。 It's a larger pattern of behaviors, whether sober or under the influence。 Mostly Carr gets it right, but sometimes it's iffy。 There's also some mildly victim-blaming backstory。 Oddly, I liked reading about Mike Valenzuela and his recovery process: it reminded me of the bittersweet victories and struggles of a friend who'd had a different [spinal] injury but similar effects。 While Mike's rehab seems somewhat unrealistically fast, it doesn't underplay the longterm ramifications or the difficulties in coping with major life-altering trauma。 。。。more

This series reads way better on tape vs。 reading for yourself。 I struggled through the first installment, but enjoyed this one much better and found that the language that bothered me in the first didn’t read as awkwardly on tape。 Overall, enjoyed this story line as well。

Excellent read to the very last word!

I understand that a lot of people love this series, but after reading 2 books to give it a chance, this is just not the series for me。 Unrealistic characters, so many are “so good” and the stories move too slowly for me。

Ronald Colflesh

Probably should have stopped reading after the first virgin river novel。 More of the same 。。。you knew how it was going to end from the beginning。 Won’t read any more of this series but will probably check in when the new season comes on Netflix

Another great poignant and insightful novel written by Ms。 Carr。 This story is filled with do good but down on their luck people who end up in Virgin River for one reason or another。 The story takes us though some real tense ups and downs but eventually the bad guys get caught and the underdogs get the help and the love they need。

Virgin River #2 - 2007 - read it again & have it

Another good oneThis is book 2 of the series and again it did not disappoint。 I loved going back to Virgin River and meeting all people I already knew from first book。 It is well written, flows beautifully and keeps you engaged。 Trigger warning: might be difficult if you've been in an abusive relationship or lost a child at childbirth。 Another good oneThis is book 2 of the series and again it did not disappoint。 I loved going back to Virgin River and meeting all people I already knew from first book。 It is well written, flows beautifully and keeps you engaged。 Trigger warning: might be difficult if you've been in an abusive relationship or lost a child at childbirth。 。。。more
