A lot of fun！ Better than the previous book。 I really enjoyed Lupin's new rival and this book felt more believable。 It also showed a side of Arsene Lupin we haven't really gotten to know before this， which was interesting and enjoyable。 There are less slow parts and the storytelling flows more。 I'm back aboard the Lupin fan train！ A lot of fun！ Better than the previous book。 I really enjoyed Lupin's new rival and this book felt more believable。 It also showed a side of Arsene Lupin we haven't really gotten to know before this， which was interesting and enjoyable。 There are less slow parts and the storytelling flows more。 I'm back aboard the Lupin fan train！ 。。。more

I found it a bit too long with the mystery around a big secret known by the King of France and passed on to his heir until the death of Louis XVI during the French Revolution 。 The ending was unnecessarily dramatic after spending 1ime to chase the truth behind Lupin's motivation which I did not find believable， even though the narrator did because of his partiality for the thief。 I was disappointed and won't recommend this one。 I found it a bit too long with the mystery around a big secret known by the King of France and passed on to his heir until the death of Louis XVI during the French Revolution 。 The ending was unnecessarily dramatic after spending 1ime to chase the truth behind Lupin's motivation which I did not find believable， even though the narrator did because of his partiality for the thief。 I was disappointed and won't recommend this one。 。。。more

At one point Lupin is aptly described as “incomprehensible， a myth， a character in a novel， having no connection with reality。” In another passage in the book while interrogating a hesitant female the interrogator proclaims “minutes lost are never are recovered” which for the reader turns into hours lost in reading this book。

Arsène Lupin as a character is hard for me to pin down psychologically， but I feel he's finally starting to come into his own in this third installment of his adventures。 In the first collection of short stories， his modus operandi is clear （steal from the rich， the desperate， the criminal）， but his motivations are murky to me， apart from a bored disdain for the structures of ordered society。 In the second collection， his battle of wits with the legendary Herlock Sholmes and Dr。 Wilson， at least Arsène Lupin as a character is hard for me to pin down psychologically， but I feel he's finally starting to come into his own in this third installment of his adventures。 In the first collection of short stories， his modus operandi is clear （steal from the rich， the desperate， the criminal）， but his motivations are murky to me， apart from a bored disdain for the structures of ordered society。 In the second collection， his battle of wits with the legendary Herlock Sholmes and Dr。 Wilson， at least one aspect of his psychology comes into focus: Arsène Lupin is driven as much by thrill-seeking as he is by love of wealth and art。 If anything， his boredom is his motivation; crime is so easy that it takes a contest with the great English detective to move Lupin's needle。In this third book， and the first full-length novel of Arsène Lupin's adventures， I feel that the character comes into even sharper focus as he battles his most formidable foe yet。 When the net draws tighter than ever before， the mask of gentility slips， revealing beneath the stereotypically ironical French thief something else entirely: a supremely dangerous man who leads supremely dangerous men， and who will stop at nothing to ensure his own safety and survival。 For the first time， I sense that Lupin is more than a highly-intelligent fop amusing himself at society's expense， and this patina of danger improves the character's attractions for me。 I find it all the more delicious that this favorable evolution of Arsène Lupin is driven not by a great foreign detective or the police of Paris， but by that most sobering of adversaries: a 17-year-old schoolboy who is， perhaps， the mental equal even of the great Arsène Lupin。 。。。more

The Hollow Needle is my First Arsene Lupin book and unfortunately this and Arsene Lupin vs Herlock Sholmes are the only Arsene Lupin’s books that we can find at our nearby bookstores。 I really hope i can find the rest of the series soon。What i can only say is I love it but I have a gut this isn’t the best yet。 I love the character development and how Maurice Leblanc adds some historical references to spice up the adventure。 This is the second book of the series， it has already so much potentia The Hollow Needle is my First Arsene Lupin book and unfortunately this and Arsene Lupin vs Herlock Sholmes are the only Arsene Lupin’s books that we can find at our nearby bookstores。 I really hope i can find the rest of the series soon。What i can only say is I love it but I have a gut this isn’t the best yet。 I love the character development and how Maurice Leblanc adds some historical references to spice up the adventure。 This is the second book of the series， it has already so much potential！i can imagine it might have become a hype back then。Arsene Lupin’s infamous skill （mostly from pop culture featuring Lupin） for being good at tricking mind， stealth and disguise are widely known that maybe causing it a little bit predictable。 I somehow could predict his trick before reading further。Nonetheless， it makes me wanting to read more Arsene Lupin series。 。。。more

De Franse acteur Omar Sy speelt de hoofdrol in de geweldige reeks "Lupin"， waarin hij een dief portretteert die geïnspireerd wordt door de boeken over gentleman inbreker Arsène Lupin， geschreven door Maurice Leblanc in het begin van de 20e eeuw。Uiteraard kon ik het niet laten na het eerste seizoen van de serie de bibliotheek in te duiken om naar die boeken op zoek te gaan。 Ik vond een exemplaar van "De Holle Naald" en was meteen vertrokken in een vlot geschreven verhaal met levendige dialogen en De Franse acteur Omar Sy speelt de hoofdrol in de geweldige reeks "Lupin"， waarin hij een dief portretteert die geïnspireerd wordt door de boeken over gentleman inbreker Arsène Lupin， geschreven door Maurice Leblanc in het begin van de 20e eeuw。Uiteraard kon ik het niet laten na het eerste seizoen van de serie de bibliotheek in te duiken om naar die boeken op zoek te gaan。 Ik vond een exemplaar van "De Holle Naald" en was meteen vertrokken in een vlot geschreven verhaal met levendige dialogen en het ene mysterie na het andere， duidelijk geïnspireerd door de verhalen over Sherlock Holmes。 Sherlock komt zelf ook aan bod in de verhalen， maar na zijn eerste introductie kwamen er uiteraard gerechtelijke klachten vanuit de hoek van Arthur Conan Doyle， en grappig genoeg veranderde Leblanc de naam van zijn Sherlock gewoon in Herlock Sholmes。Na wat opzoekwerk blijkt dat "De Holle Naald" nog maar het derde boek is in een totaal van 25。 Uitgeverij Oevers， de oorsponkelijke Nederlandse uitgever voor deze boeken， zal nu wel in de handen wrijven met de nieuwe Netflix-serie， en gaat binnenkort een nieuwe editie van dit boek uitbrengen。 Hopelijk lezen ze de tekst dan nog even na。 Want in de editie die ik las， staan heel veel typefouten。 Ontbrekende letters， verkeerde letters， werkwoorden in een meervoudvorm terwijl het enkelvoud moet zijn， 。。。 Geen vijf bladzijden gaan voorbij zonder fout。 Een purist zou het boek al lang neergelegd hebben。Maar het verhaal is intrigerend， en best ingewikkeld om uit te leggen。 Het begint met een stelletje inbrekers in een landhuis vol kunstvoorwerpen， waar achteraf blijkt dat er toch niets verdwenen is。 Beautrelet， een jonge student， overtreft de plaatselijke politie en legt uit wat er volgens hem gebeurd is， en hij blijkt het nog bij het rechte eind te hebben ook。 Uiteindelijk neemt de jongen de uitdaging aan en zet de achtervolging in op Arsène Lupin， die uiteraard verantwoordelijk was voor de inbraak。 Zo komt hij een eeuwenoud geheim op het spoor， terug te draaien tot de tijd van Caesar en de Galliërs: een geheim dat voor het succes van alle koningshuizen zorgde die in hun tijd het geheim beheerden。 Nu is Lupin bezitter van het geheim， en daarom heeft niemand hem alsnog kunnen pakken。 Beautrelet ontcijfert echter een geheime boodschap， ontdekt de schuilplaats van Lupin， maar is dan getuige van een te snel en ook nog eens droevig einde。Net zoals ik benieuwd ben naar het tweede seizoen van de serie， die met een grote cliffhanger het eerste seizoen afsloot， ben ik benieuwd naar de andere boeken over Lupin。 Op dit moment lijkt het erop dat er nog maar drie vertaald zijn in het Nederlands， maar misschien dat daar binnenkort verandering in komt。 。。。more
