Summary

In The Big Book of Beasts Yuval Zommer’s wonderful illustrations bring to whimsical life some of the grizzliest, hairiest, bravest, wiliest, and most fearsome beasts in the animal kingdom。 Brimming with interesting facts from beast consultant Barbara Taylor, this charming picture book is a beautiful way for parents to introduce young children to the animal world—and for older children to learn by themselves。

In the first pages children learn that beasts are wild animals that can’t be tamed and that they all defend themselves in different ways。 As the book continues young readers meet specific beasts, including armadillos, bears, tigers, and the Tasmanian devil。 The Big Book of Beasts also approaches the world of beasts thematically, looking at mythical beasts, Ice Age beasts, beasts on your street, and how to save beasts in danger of extinction。

The funny and conversational text, amazing facts, and glorious and quirky pictures will draw in young children over and over again。

This has become one of my daughter's favorite animal books this year。The Big Book of Beasts is oversized and filled with illustrations and simple facts for many different animals from honey badgers to leopards。 The general location is given for each animal as well。 The writing is simple and easy to understand, so children can pick up the facts quickly and remember them。 We've been reading about one or two animals before bedtime and it's something she looks forward to daily。 I think we'll just r This has become one of my daughter's favorite animal books this year。The Big Book of Beasts is oversized and filled with illustrations and simple facts for many different animals from honey badgers to leopards。 The general location is given for each animal as well。 The writing is simple and easy to understand, so children can pick up the facts quickly and remember them。 We've been reading about one or two animals before bedtime and it's something she looks forward to daily。 I think we'll just reread it all over again!4**** 。。。more

Worth it for the castor fact about beavers alone。 I came for the illustrations, but stayed for the animal fun facts。

I love this series of books。 Normally, I do not approve of illustrations in non-fiction (as opposed to photos) but these illustrations are sublime。

Information about common and obscure animals that are predators or fierce animals with cute illustrations。 Also has a seek and find to extend the fun time with a book!

A survey of different kinds of mammals, their unique attributes, and how they protect themselves and their homes。 Also includes some hide-n-seek activities。I liked the worldwide selection of different types of mammals。 It also highlights some that don't frequently get the spotlight, like binturongs。 I had no idea this was just about mammals from anything on the cover。 It says it is about animals of all kinds, but it is really only about mammals。 Which is great。 It'd just be nice to have a clue b A survey of different kinds of mammals, their unique attributes, and how they protect themselves and their homes。 Also includes some hide-n-seek activities。I liked the worldwide selection of different types of mammals。 It also highlights some that don't frequently get the spotlight, like binturongs。 I had no idea this was just about mammals from anything on the cover。 It says it is about animals of all kinds, but it is really only about mammals。 Which is great。 It'd just be nice to have a clue before cracking the cover。 (Wanna hear a funny librarian story? It seems some didn't even crack the cover before cataloging this。 Library of Congress has a subject heading for this title indicating it is about dragons and mythical beasts。 To be fair, I think they got it from OCLC。 Regardless, somebody made a big whoops。) At the beginning of the book is a diagram showing the different subdivisions of mammals and the book highlights two animals in each division at least。 Kids who like the ferocious mammals should enjoy all the fun facts in this book。 And hide-n-seek fans will like the hidden paw prints throughout。 。。。more

Warm-blooded animals with hair or fur have the scientific name “mammals。” Some mammals are friendly and some are beastly! Beasts are deadly, cunning, and most importantly, Wild! Here’a who’s who of the most beastly of the bunch。”Why I Like The Big Book of Beasts:~What is a beast? This is the first question answered in The Big Book of Beasts。 To know, you must know something about their claws and jaws, and then you must know how and why beasts howl, growl, and smell。~There are 19 different “beasts,” including those of the Ice Age, included in The Big Book of Beasts。 Maybe most important to know, is which of these beasts could be roaming on your street, right now!~Kids will enjoy The Big Book of Beasts。 They will flip back and forth to their favorite animals and to those unfamiliar animals。 Kids will be interested to know what makes these animals “beastly。”~The book is oversized, much taller than normal, giving it large spreads to build its theme of beasts。~Zommer hid 15 specific paw prints throughout the book (see below)。 He asks kids to find them, but to beware of the close-but-not-correct paw prints。 The illustrative answers to the hidden paws are in the back of the book, spread by spread 。 。 。 more reasons->PPBF includes resources and activities to accompany reading each book。 A link to years worth of PPBF entries also included。Originally reviewed on Kid Lit Reviews。 To read entire entry and see interior illustrations, go to: http://bit。ly/TheBigBookOfBeasts 。。。more

The more you know, even the smallest piece of information, about animals in your immediate world or on the planet, the better able you are to protect and assist them。 With spring in full swing now, our state bird, robins, can be seen everywhere。 This year, thanks to reading Robins!
