Summary

Hugh van Cuylenburg was a primary school teacher volunteering in northern India when he had a life-changing realisation- despite the underprivileged community the children were from, they were remarkably positive。 By contrast, back in Australia Hugh knew that all too many children struggled with depression, social anxieties and mental illness。 His own little sister had been ravaged by anorexia nervosa。

How was it that young people he knew at home, who had food, shelter, friends and a loving family, struggled with their mental health, while these kids seemed so contented and resilient? He set about finding the answer and in time came to recognise the key traits and behaviours these children possessed were gratitude, empathy and mindfulness。

In the ensuing years Hugh threw himself into studying and sharing this revelation with the world through The Resilience Project, with his playful and unorthodox presentations which both entertain and inform。 Now, with the same blend of humour, poignancy and clear-eyed insight that The Resilience Project has become renowned for, Hugh explains how we can all get the tools we need to live a happier and more fulfilling life。

I started out reading it but largely listened to the Audible version which made it more engaging!I laughed and cried with all the stories Hugh shared。 A simple message with profound carry on affect。 GEM IS DIS

Everyone should read this book! If you’re reading negative reviews and deciding not to read the book。。。 how about you just read it and decide for yourself!!Hugh doesn’t claim to be an expert or a mental health professional - he’s an Australian with a passion and experiences a lot of us can relate to。 I find his talent for explaining things in a way we can all understand amazing and I really enjoyed this book and the seeds it plants in every person who reads it。 This book has a lasting impact。 Re Everyone should read this book! This book has given me time to think about my purpose in life or rather the tools to find it。 I’m still quite young and don’t really know much about the world, GEM is going to help me see the positives

This book is incredible。 Very inspiring and told in such a way I couldn’t put it down。 I love the message of the book and the way it’s portrayed in so many different situations for a range of people。 Highly recommend

This book came highly recommended by people in my course last year, and I'm glad they enjoyed it and got something from it, but it just didn't quite give me what I want from this kind of book。 The first ~third was interesting (despite the obvious privilege of the author, and some slightly iffy 'wow we have it so much better than people with disabilities/in developing countries' vibes), the rest didn't really add to the book, in my point of view (except for page numbers)。 A lot of name-dropping o This book came highly recommended by people in my course last year, and I'm glad they enjoyed it and got something from it, but it just didn't quite give me what I want from this kind of book。 The first ~third was interesting (despite the obvious privilege of the author, and some slightly iffy 'wow we have it so much better than people with disabilities/in developing countries' vibes), the rest didn't really add to the book, in my point of view (except for page numbers)。 A lot of name-dropping of sports stars or whoever who apparently are really involved in the project/practice, and then generally what seemed like an extended CV of how many people had been involved and how, along with future plans etc。 It's great that it's been useful, and it definitely is necessary for schools (and, it seems, these elite sports teams), but I think the book should've emphasised the first part, which I'm guessing is what's emphasised in the talks。 I personally didn't take anything new from this book, but the project's reach and popularity could make this a good starting point for others。 。。。more

Loved this book。 Easy read and very practical tips to incorporate GEM into daily life。

I feel this suffers from "I'm a speaker, not a writer" syndrome with many sentences that are better said than read。 Unfortunately, for me, it was about a 0。3% informative and 99。7% memoir, which was not what I was expecting at all, and thus didn't really like it。 I feel this suffers from "I'm a speaker, not a writer" syndrome with many sentences that are better said than read。 Unfortunately, for me, it was about a 0。3% informative and 99。7% memoir, which was not what I was expecting at all, and thus didn't really like it。 。。。more

I listened to the audio book which I highly recommend, listening to the stories of Stanzin and Hugh having a beer with Steve Smith make much more of an impact than I think they would when reading the book。 This book will make you re-evaluate your life!

Martha

This book has some great insight how navigate this very hectic lifestyle I sometimes find myself in。 It was my first audio book I have consumed and was great having it read by the author himself。

This would be a great book if you were new to the concepts of gratitude, empathy and mindfulness。 Practice them - they’re brilliant。 For me, this was a memoir of someone’s transition from teenage cricketer to teacher to happiness speaker。 It was full of sport references that were lost on me and didn’t give me anything new。 Having said that, men and teachers should be all over this book。

I thoroughly appreciated the authenticity of the anecdotes and vulnerability demonstrated from start to finish throughout The Resilience Project! Having never fully understood the power of GEM before, the rawness of Hugh’s reflections peeled away my scepticism with each chapter。。。 I’ve been fortunate enough to participate in two of Marty’s workshops before so can attest to the benefit of bringing him on board TRP。 He is exactly as the book describes - intense yet energetic and engaging! I really like the idea of a daily gratitude practice。 Like journaling or meditating first thing in the morning。。。 Some interesting insights and stories, but I felt like there was a lot of ego。。。 All the stories about the sports celebs he helped。。。 did anyone else think it was odd that a footballer went out and got a tattoo as a result of a talk from a stranger, even if he was supposed to be an expert’?!

After a life changing experience while teaching in India, Hugh van Cuylenburg identifies the 3 principles he believes play a major part in being happy - gratitude, empathy and mindfulness。 Told through a series of stories and events, van Cuylenburg shares just how these 3 aspects can change your life。 This truly is a book that I will recommend to every person I possibly can。 As a teacher, I may have a slight bias, but I also took a lot away from this personally。 This is the first book I can thin After a life changing experience while teaching in India, Hugh van Cuylenburg identifies the 3 principles he believes play a major part in being happy - gratitude, empathy and mindfulness。 Told through a series of stories and events, van Cuylenburg shares just how these 3 aspects can change your life。 This truly is a book that I will recommend to every person I possibly can。 As a teacher, I may have a slight bias, but I also took a lot away from this personally。 This is the first book I can think of that I actually whipped out a notebook and started writing notes。 It had me calling my family and friends and blurting out everything I loved about them。 It gave me so much to think about - not only about how to make changes to benefit my own mental health, but also how to be there for others。 I could continue to RAVE about this book, but I'll let the author sum it up:"Strip away the emotional talks, the slideshows and the background research, and we are simply educating people in how to be kind to others, be mindful of the world around them and be grateful for the things that go well for them。" 。。。more

The okker guide to gratitude! This book has some really sweet stories, but is probably better suited to someone brand new to concepts like mindfulness。 The ideal audience in my opinion would he your uncle Dean (Deano) who’s hobbies include cricket, beer and saying things like “man up”, cleverly masking his own insecurities and deep unhappiness with how life panned out。

I fell in love with this book, this mission, this vision and with his words and passion for change。 The vulnerability and deeply personal sharing of his and his sisters story are moving。 Working in a similar space as the GEM program, I honestly felt re-inspired to redefine our work, mission and passion work。 I would recommend anyone working with youth, read this book please。

The type of book that lands in your lap for a reason。 Teaching gratitude and actually practising gratitude are vastly different。 This book provides anecdotes to suggest resilience is found through Gratitude Empathy Mindfulness (GEM)。 Nothing to lose by giving it a go。

The Resilience Project came to present a talk at my work a couple of years ago, and as experienced by many people written about in this book, the presentation was a powerful and impactful experience。 This book was a great insight into the journey this project has taken, and a great reminder for me to continue to practice the GEM principles。 Would strongly recommend reading this book and if possible, getting along to one of the talks。
