Summary

When a marriage proposal appears imminent for the beautiful -- if rebellious -- Lady Rose Summer, her father wants to know if her suitor's intentions are honorable。 He calls on Captain Harry Cathcart, the impoverished younger son of a baron, to do some intelligence work on the would-be fiancee, Sir Geoffrey Blandon。

After his success in uncovering Geoffrey's dishonorable motives, Harry fashions a career out of "fixing" things for wealthy aristocrats。 So when the Marquess of Hedley finds one of his guests dead at a lavish house party, he knows just the man to call。

But when Harry is caught between his client's desire for discretion and his suspicion that murder may indeed have been committed, he enlists the help of Superintendent Kerridge of the Scotland Yard and Lady Rose, also a guest at Lord Hedley's。

Set in the Edwardian world of parties, servants, and scandal, Snobbery with Violence is a delightful combination of murderous intrigue and high society。

I loved this glorious novel, fast pace and intriguing。

Really enjoyed this and loved the title。

WOW! Snobbery With Violence was quite a ride!

Lighthearted & amusing。 Recommend for Downtown Abbey fans。

Cheesy, but sometimes one needs a little fluff。

Feels like more of a romance than a mystery。 The mystery, such as it is, has a truly absurd resolution。That said, the next book might be able to focus more on the case and less on character introduction so maybe I'll give it a go。 Feels like more of a romance than a mystery。 The mystery, such as it is, has a truly absurd resolution。That said, the next book might be able to focus more on the case and less on character introduction so maybe I'll give it a go。 。。。more

A nice mystery w/o the nudity and sex that permeates the majority of books today。 Davina Porter’s narration is fantastic as always。

I had a hard time getting into this。

I found out that M。C。 Beaton wrote several books under the name Marion Chesney, so I just picked one of a first in series available on Audible plus and really enjoyed this one!

Still in my reading slump but I did finish this! I listened to the audiobook。It wasn’t amazing to me and that might be because I am in a slump but I also didn’t connect that well to the main characters。 That said, I’ll probably still read the other books in the series。It’s relatively clean with just a few swear words and mention of people sleeping around and STIs。

Started rather slow and almost lost me but then made up fir it。 Downtown vibes def with the secrets the servants help their uppers keep。 Lol。

This is the first book in the series and it was okish for me with nothing much in terms of mystery or detection。 The main leads had no chemistry between them and I found heroine Rose a bit stupid though she is very well educated and intelligent。 Her maid Daisy and hero’s manServant were more fun and ready to help their masters。 All in all a so so book and I doubt I will read the remaining in the series

I've loved the work of M。C。 Beaton for years now。 This book marked my first foray into the author writing under her real name。 The tale is well written as a whole。 It does a good job at representing the class structure of it's timeframe。 The plot seemed a bit slow going in spots as did some of the overall character development。 I must say that I enjoyed the characters of Daisy and Beckett slightly more than that of Lady Rose and Captain Harry。 But as an ensemble piece, I rather liked the banter I've loved the work of M。C。 Beaton for years now。 This book marked my first foray into the author writing under her real name。 The tale is well written as a whole。 It does a good job at representing the class structure of it's timeframe。 The plot seemed a bit slow going in spots as did some of the overall character development。 I must say that I enjoyed the characters of Daisy and Beckett slightly more than that of Lady Rose and Captain Harry。 But as an ensemble piece, I rather liked the banter between all of them。 There was enough within to keep me interested and I will more than likely pick up the next book in the series。 。。。more

Such a fun book。 People may toss this book aside thinking it’s fluff。 I’m a serious reader。 I read text books for fun。 Sometimes though a fun, light read is just the perfect book in which to dive, and this book really delivers。 (I normally read novels by Michael Connelly, David Baldacci, and Ann Cleeves, for example。)This was a a terrific and enjoyable read。 The characters are all such fun; they are well developed and most interesting, even the minor ones。 Chesney really took pains creating rich Such a fun book。 People may toss this book aside thinking it’s fluff。 I’m a serious reader。 I read text books for fun。 Sometimes though a fun, light read is just the perfect book in which to dive, and this book really delivers。 (I normally read novels by Michael Connelly, David Baldacci, and Ann Cleeves, for example。)This was a a terrific and enjoyable read。 The characters are all such fun; they are well developed and most interesting, even the minor ones。 Chesney really took pains creating rich characters that readers will enjoy。 The plot is quite plausible, and when you find out “who dunnit” you’ll see that it was there for you all along。 Chesney did not rush the ending to a cliff-like finish; she cleverly led up to it。 As a bonus, the book gives interesting, accurate insight into life below stairs and life upstairs in Edwardian England。 Great fun! Buy this book。 It’s fun。 It’s light。 It’s well written。 The commas are in the correct places, and the dialogue was delightfully written。 What’s not to enjoy? 。。。more

Cute and quick read。 Davina Porter made it more interesting than just reading it。

Not as good as the Agatha Raisin novels IMHO

3。5。。。I felt this book to be a bit slow to get into, but perhaps it is because it is the first in a series。 Overall, an easy, enjoyable read。。lots of potential for character development and that potential makes me want to read more in this series。 On to book 2。。。

Not bad for a free audible book。

Very entertaining! Impractical, improbable, implausible, but light-hearted and ridiculous。 The characters are richly described and pop off the page。 I especially enjoyed this book after watching “Bridgerton”。

I enjoyed listening to this book on audible; the title is included in my subscription。 I love the reader, Davina Porter and sometimes think she is what makes a decent book great! It is a good mystery and has potential as a series。 I do hope that possible romances between the main characters (including servants) come to fruition! I like a good romance mixed with murder!

Kim

I know I was a little distracted when listening to this, but I didn’t know who the characters were and just didn’t get into this book。

I thought I had read or at least heard of, pretty much every Marion Chesney book! And then I stumbled on this on Audible, and what a delight! An Edwardian setting, a heroine who is overeducated and spoiling for something interesting to do。 Our hero is an injured soldier short of funds, who falls into the business of "fixing" problems among high society, like investigating potential suitors or uncovering blackmail。 Especially love Daisy, former chorus girl turned ladies' maid and confidante, and I thought I had read or at least heard of, pretty much every Marion Chesney book! Audible is providing books 1-4 of the Edwardian Murder Mysteries for free right now。 When I saw that the narrator was Divina Porter。。。well, that sold me on it。 Porter could bring the phone book to life。 (Oh dear, do kids even know what a phone book is?) It's light, a bit silly, a bit predictable, but the perfect listening companion while cleaning the house。 Of course it's fairly easy to guess who the murderer is。 My favorite character was the policeman who really can't stand "his betters。" Some Audible is providing books 1-4 of the Edwardian Murder Mysteries for free right now。 When I saw that the narrator was Divina Porter。。。well, that sold me on it。 Porter could bring the phone book to life。 (Oh dear, do kids even know what a phone book is?) Really enjoyed this。Lots of characters though。

Interesting premise that takes some time to build, due to the strict class society of the period。 I do like how the lady's maid and valet, both very untraditional, not only help solve the case, but work to bring their employers together, very subtly。 Interesting premise that takes some time to build, due to the strict class society of the period。 I do like how the lady's maid and valet, both very untraditional, not only help solve the case, but work to bring their employers together, very subtly。 。。。more
