Summary

Prepare for the jaw-dropping finale to the beloved New York Times bestselling series。

The long-imprisoned jinn are on the attack, wreaking bloody havoc in villages and cities alike。 But for the Nightbringer, vengeance on his human foes is just the beginning。

By his side, Commandant Keris Veturia declares herself Empress and calls for the heads of any and all who defy her rule。 At the top of the list? The Blood Shrike and her remaining family。

Laia of Serra, now allied with the Blood Shrike, struggles to recover from the loss of the two people most important to her。 Determined to stop the approaching apocalypse, she throws herself into the destruction of the Nightbringer。 In the process, she awakens an ancient power that could lead her to victory—or to an unimaginable doom。

And deep in the Waiting Place, the Soul Catcher seeks only to forget the life—and love—he left behind。 Yet doing so means ignoring the trail of murder left by the Nightbringer and his jinn。 To uphold his oath and protect the human world from the supernatural, the Soul Catcher must look beyond the borders of his own land。 He must take on a mission that could save—or destroy—all that he knows。

Started this series years ago and even met the author when she visited our school before she became her today famous self。 I have enjoyed the series, but the first book is still my favorite。 This last one ties all of the characters and plot lines up well; I found the second half of the book to be much more relatable (in terms of the series) and exciting。

4 YA stars。 Tahir's writing and plotting have gotten better with each book of the series。Who this is for: I’d argue this series is New Adult, not Young Adult, due to suggestive scenes。 4 YA stars。 Tahir's writing and plotting have gotten better with each book of the series。Who this is for: I’d argue this series is New Adult, not Young Adult, due to suggestive scenes。 。。。more

i would give it infinite starsthat's how good it is。the story, the plot, the characters。the way the author literally snatched the jobs of therapists- in this book i learnt more about hate, love and forgiveness。 they are such simple words but such complex and twisted emotions。 the way that author represents peace in all these emotions, the silence we seek, its magical。 i would give it infinite starsthat's how good it is。the story, the plot, the characters。the way the author literally snatched the jobs of therapists- in this book i learnt more about hate, love and forgiveness。 they are such simple words but such complex and twisted emotions。 the way that author represents peace in all these emotions, the silence we seek, its magical。 。。。more

VALE TODA LA PENA DEL MUNDO y lo recomiendo 100%。Voy a extrañar a los personajes y la historia pero estoy feliz de que al menos los protas principales tienen un futuro al que mirar。 。。。more

Overall the resolutions to the character arcs were satisfying。 Some frustrations: I feel like Harper and Darrin both dying, in much the same way, was redundant and uninspired。 But I also just didn’t want Harper to die。 I feel Darrin’s death would’ve been more impactful if it wasn’t so predictable and sudden/served no purpose。 I wish we would’ve gotten a bit more about the magic system and the kingdoms beyond the empire and free lands, particularly the jaduna。 Who is the blood magic? Is Mauth not the only source of magic? What are his limitations and why? None of these questions are answered, and that’s ok because it’s not a hard magic series。 But I was left with a lot of questions。 I wish the final Laia/Nighbringer show down was better。 Laia’s insistence on killing the nightbringer and her refusal to trust rehmat throughout felt off。。。 her love, empathy vs hate, anger felt unbalanced in service of the plot。 I’m not ecstatic with the way that battle happened but I still enjoyed reading it and seeing rehmat be merciful。 。。。more

The first three novels were so easy to read and well-paced。 On the other hand, I felt like someone else wrote this last novel。 I almost stopped reading multiple times and actively avoided reading it but I'm glad I stuck with it and read the whole thing。 Things I didn't like:1。 Laia has become a total Mary Sue: I had really enjoyed Laia's growth from a scared girl to a brave woman in the first two novels but since then I've disliked her more and more。 She seems to know exactly what to say to conv The first three novels were so easy to read and well-paced。 On the other hand, I felt like someone else wrote this last novel。 I almost stopped reading multiple times and actively avoided reading it but I'm glad I stuck with it and read the whole thing。 Things I didn't like:1。 Laia has become a total Mary Sue: I had really enjoyed Laia's growth from a scared girl to a brave woman in the first two novels but since then I've disliked her more and more。 She seems to know exactly what to say to convince other people, can become a pro at any weapon in a short time, gets new powers that are just what she needs to escape at that moment, and always does the 'right' thing。 I don't understand why the Tribesmen listen to her so much。 I thought Tribesmen were wary of outsiders。 I also find her selfish。 It was also very convenient that Rehmat was living in her and could give her powers when she needed them the most。 As a side note, we are told that Harper, Darin and Tas also have Rehmat within them but we are never shown what their powers are。 If you're not gonna show us, why tell us that。 She could have just said Laia and Helene had a piece of her and Darin also did but had not yet discovered it。 Why bring Tas and Harper into this too? Anyway, I especially disliked how I started to find Laia selfish when the book was trying so hard to show her as the all-caring savior of Scholars。 Yes, she is advocating for Scholar freedom (which is great) but she doesn't care about anything else or other people as long as her people are fine。 Her perspective on the world is very one-sided。 She expects everyone to understand her but doesn't reciprocate。 I was honestly shocked when she 'forgave' the Nightbringer。 She also totally gave up on Elias even after talking to Tas。 She only started to try to get through to Elias after he saved her。 Overall, I just didn't enjoy reading her chapters and just wanted to move along。 2。 Characters avoiding romance: I was fine with Elias doing this for a while even though that got boring until he finally decided to pursue his love。 But, when Sabaa Tahir put Helene through the same thing, I was very annoyed。 She sounded like a broken record player。 The back and forth with showing affection to Harper then completely avoiding him made the whole situation even worse。 I can't imagine what Harper went through - bless his heart he must have been an angel to stand that kind of attitude。3。 Elias - Mauth conflict: I don't understand why Mauth constantly keept Elias from figuring out the maelstrom。 He could have helped keep it locked away。 I was confused about Mauth's insistence in keeping Elias 'drugged up' the whole series。 Just when I thought he was starting to remember, Mauth would push through and we would be back at square one。 By the middle of the book, I felt like I was reading the same chapters of Elias fighting Mauth's power over him over and over again in different words。 Also, how did Mauth not know about the rot in the Waiting Place? I kinda understand how the 'human world' may seem like an 'ant's world' and Mauth isn't interested in its matters but if something from that 'ant world' is powerful enough to weaken Mauth, it should look at the 'ant world' closely and fix the situation。 All this time Mauth could have told Elias what to do to defeat the Nightbringer。 Mauth shouldn't need Elias to explain what's happening if it's as powerful and all-knowing as it claims to be。 4。 Killing spree: Sooo many characters died。 And so unexpectedly。 And with just a sentence。 I mean Livia had to die to get Helene to be the empress regent but she deserved a more meaningful death。 She had been through so much and I loved her character development from the kind sweet girl to the powerful empress。 She didn't deserve to die out of nowhere。 Same with Darin。 Why did he have to die? Laia was already angry enough to kill the Nightbringer and she wasn't listening to Rehmat's warnings。 She would have killed the Nightbringer with a little provocation。 Darin did not need to die, especially so suddenly。 And Harper。 Poor Harper。 He also didn't have to die。 He survived so many impossible battles that his death sounded unrealistic。 He deserved so much better。 5。 Deus ex machina: the plot gets twisted so much and all of a sudden something happens and miraculously saves the day。 Meh。6。 Constant switch between the 3 povs: I loved reading the three points of view at the beginning。 But in this novel, all three characters sounded very similar。 So much so that I had to remind myself of whose pov I was reading。 Also, as soon as I started enjoying the chapter and the character, we would switch to a different pov。 And when we returned to that pov, I would not care anymore。 7。 Keris' ending: I honestly didn't want to see Keris's 'weak' side during her conversation with the Nightbringer (especially from the Nightbringer's pov, which made her emotions even more pronounced)。 Until this point, we only saw Keris as the heartless villain who poisoned her own son and doomed him to die。 I'm not convinced that she is reminded of Elias as a baby all of a sudden and doesn't think she can kill him。 This new portrayal of Keris does not make sense。 Like many things in this novel, it is out of nowhere and too convenient for setting up her death。 For someone who has so many ambitions, I found her willingness to die super weird。 She deserved a more dramatic ending。 8。 Obsession with love: The word 'love' is repeated 309 times in this book。 Trust me I ran a command+f on the ebook。 I liked the sentiment behind making love and emotions as the most powerful thing against challenges front and center as a theme。 But we didn't have to be reminded of this constantly。 I honestly ended up skipping through those paragraphs。9。 villain's doom: The Sea of Suffering is introduced as a new villain in this novel。 It is an all-powerful force that only Mauth can barely keep away from destroying the world。 So, how can showing mercy to the Nightbringer stop the Sea? I thought once unleashed, the Sea would be unstoppable。 Yet, everything conveniently ends。 Things I liked:1。 Tiny hints throughout: I really liked the little plot twist with Mirra replacing Elias。 Sabaa Tahir left teeny tiny clues along the way too and I loved how she tied them all together at the end。 2。 3D villain: I loved reading Nightbringer's pov。 It made the villain gray rather than black-and-white。 We got to understand his motives。 This was a breath of fresh air among so many novels with one-dimensional villains and gave the novel an additional star in my rating。 I felt conflicted about which 'side' to choose。 I honestly would have been fine if Laia did not manage to defeat the Sea。 Same with Keris。 Even though I despised her and only got one chance to read her pov, I loved reading her backstory and understanding why she became who she is。 3。 Where our 3 main characters ended up: The ending for Laia, Elias and Helene made sense for their characters。 There could have been other endings more satisfying but I have peace of mind when I think of them。4。 the Tale: Oh the Tale。。。 We were reading it throughout but we never noticed until the last minute。 It was actually quite clever because I was worried that Sabaa Tahir was not going to write the whole tale out to prevent an interruption to the flow but she was actually telling us the story all along。 Genius。 I also liked how Laia promised to tell the story both as a precaution and to encourage others to see others three dimensionally。 Overall, I feel like Sabaa Tahir had an ending in mind but didn't really know how to get there so she got lost a little in the middle of this last novel but I liked how she tied everything together at the end。 。。。more
