Summary

Simon vs。 the Homo Sapiens Agenda meets Clueless in this boy-meets-boy spin on Grease

A Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection

Only Mostly Devastated is the kind of book I wish existed when my kids were younger—a charming, funny, laugh-out-loud teen romance that reminds all readers love comes in a multitude of flavors, and they are ALL sweet。” —Jodi Picoult, New York Times–bestselling author of Small Great Things and A Spark of Light

“A delightful, heartwarming, heartrending story about family, love, friendship, and living your most authentic life。 I couldn't put it down。” —New York Times–bestselling author Sandhya Menon

Will Tavares is the dream summer fling—he’s fun, affectionate, kind—but just when Ollie thinks he’s found his Happily Ever After, summer vacation ends and Will stops texting Ollie back。 Now Ollie is one prince short of his fairytale ending, and to complicate the fairytale further, a family emergency sees Ollie uprooted and enrolled at a new school across the country。 Which he minds a little less when he realizes it’s the same school Will goes to…except Ollie finds that the sweet, comfortably queer guy he knew from summer isn’t the same one attending Collinswood High。 This Will is a class clown, closeted—and, to be honest, a bit of a jerk。

Ollie has no intention of pining after a guy who clearly isn’t ready for a relationship, especially since this new, bro-y jock version of Will seems to go from hot to cold every other week。 But then Will starts “coincidentally” popping up in every area of Ollie’s life, from music class to the lunch table, and Ollie finds his resolve weakening。

The last time he gave Will his heart, Will handed it back to him trampled and battered。 Ollie would have to be an idiot to trust him with it again。

Right? Right。

This was so sweet, fun, heart-wrenching and lovely all at the same time。 It was somewhat predictable but the characters were interesting and complex so I didn't necessarily mind the predicability of it all。 This is definitely one of the better YA books I've read! Perfect summer read, extremely enjoyable。 I flew through this book really quickly over a few sunny days and smiled my way through the whole thing。The story and characters are charming enough on their own, the comparisons to Grease are a really fun addition。A very nice, light LGBT+ Teen Romance that offers plenty of titters and swoons。

i really liked this even though i felt as tho both will and alex were really selfish at times, i feel like the only character i related to was niamh, but other than that it was really sweet

Well this is the second book I finished today。 I read this in one sitting。 This book made me laugh, smile and cry。 It was so adorable and yet had some serious moments that truly were impactful。 All these emotions are fully shown in the thanksgiving scenes。 Will and Ollie, my whole heart, so cute I love them。 Also loved Ollie’s cousins。 Such a quick and cute read that also just hits you right in the feels。 A delight and a strong 4 stars (I just wish there was more to read!)

This is such a comfort read now。 This book is so cute and lovely。 The relationship is really beautifully developed, and the characters grow and address their issues in a great way。

This was adorable! I don't usually like YA books or book that focus on characters in high school, but ,Only Most Devastated really homes in on those self-aware yet hilariously dramatic teenagers that you knew growing up。 I also can't help but relate with the experience of moving from California to another state and dealing with your own form of culture shock。 I absolutely loved Ollie's character and his self-deprecating humor。 He was so unapologetic about expressing his emotions and consistently This was adorable! An adorable book, and I absolutely loved the Grease-references (they were often subtle, and I wouldn't have even minded to have a bit more of them)。 This being said, even though I loved the story, I felt like some of the side characters were just there to adress certain issues, without really having any depth on their own。 But still, a lovely story which will hopefully have a positive impact on anyone reading it。 I wish Goodreads worked with half stars as well, I'm floating between a 3。5 and a 4 An adorable book, and I absolutely loved the Grease-references (they were often subtle, and I wouldn't have even minded to have a bit more of them)。 This being said, even though I loved the story, I felt like some of the side characters were just there to adress certain issues, without really having any depth on their own。 But still, a lovely story which will hopefully have a positive impact on anyone reading it。 I wish Goodreads worked with half stars as well, I'm floating between a 3。5 and a 4。 。。。more

With a title like 'only mostly devasates' i should probably have realized that I would be the devastated one。 In the cheesiest way possible, I laughed, I cried and I really loved it。 I found the beginning a little slow but the ending was SO worth it。 This story is sweet and heartbreaking and tackles the really tough topic of coming out。 A GREAT YA for young and old people to enjoy。 With a title like 'only mostly devasates' i should probably have realized that I would be the devastated one。 In the cheesiest way possible, I laughed, I cried and I really loved it。 I found the beginning a little slow but the ending was SO worth it。 This story is sweet and heartbreaking and tackles the really tough topic of coming out。 A GREAT YA for young and old people to enjoy。 。。。more

This book is, in shortest words, exactly what it advertises itself as- a witty, queer, coming-of-age story about teenagers figuring themselves out。 Definitely recommend, with the obligatory trigger warnings being: talk of serious sickness from the point of view of a close one, talk of death, a few instances of fatphobia and homophobia。 -The next segment contains spoilers so read at your own discretion-I was admittedly surprised by the depth of it, having expected just a relaxed read, but it's This book is, in shortest words, exactly what it advertises itself as- a witty, queer, coming-of-age story about teenagers figuring themselves out。 Definitely recommend, with the obligatory trigger warnings being: talk of serious sickness from the point of view of a close one, talk of death, a few instances of fatphobia and homophobia。 -The next segment contains spoilers so read at your own discretion-I was admittedly surprised by the depth of it, having expected just a relaxed read, but it's nevertheless commendable- its descriptions of grief are very realistic and hit hard for everyone who has lost someone, and the way the author deals with each of her characters and manages to give their characters growth is amazing。 I love how Gonzales dealt with a lot of things, but my favourite parts were definitely:1) Lara's journey from being an unlikable, mean character to, having come to terms with her sexuality and having decided to be admit her own mistakes, to being a character one could actually feel for and like。 She grew without having a magical moment where she turned into a completely different person, which is realistic, and the book left me hope that she would continue to grow and be a better time even after the story on the pages ended2) the realistic portrayal of the fatphobia that Niamh deals with on a daily basis, and the fact that it wasn't resolved by her becoming skinnier。 Instead, the 'dieting' she did was shown to effectively make her unhealthier, and once she realized that she started looking better and happier and more energized, which got her that deal in New York。 It's not something I ever saw in a book not about fat acceptance, tbh。3) the way Will and Ollie's relationship was handled。 It's a very tricky situation to deal with, and one that quickly becomes toxic。 I love that they were both shown to be in the wrong in a way, and that instead of glossing over how much it hurt Ollie to be in that relationship the way it was before, the author allowed him to move away and stand up for himself, even if later he realized that he had some things to work on too。 I can't say for sure whether I think it was a good or a bad thing that their relationship went that way, but I will say that it's very realistic, and even if not everyone agrees that it was handled the best way possible, I commend the author for doing their best to deal with it a healthy manner。 。。。more
