Summary

Set in a lushly drawn world inspired by Inquisition Spain, Zoraida Córdova's fantasy is an epic tale of love and revenge perfect for fans of Sabaa Tahir and Sarah J。 Maas。

As a memory thief, the rarest and most feared of the magical Moria, Renata was used by the crown to carry out the King's Wrath, a siege that resulted in the deaths of thousands of her own people。

Now Renata is one of the Whispers, rebel spies working against the crown。 The Whispers may have rescued Renata years ago, but she cannot escape their mistrust and hatred—or the overpowering memories of the hundreds of souls she drained during her time in the palace。

When Dez, the commander of her unit—and the boy she's grown to love—is taken captive by the notorious Principe Dorado, Renata must return to Andalucia and complete Dez's top secret mission herself。 But as Renata grows more deeply embedded in the politics of the royal court, she uncovers a secret in her past that could change the fate of the entire kingdom—and end the war that has cost her everything。

This book took a while to catch me, but by the end, I needed to know what would happened。 And the end, though not a conclusion by any means, was satisfying enough that I felt like this story was done, even though there is so much more story to tell。 This book was full of so many twists and surprises。 Allies who became enemies and enemies who became allies and people who weren't what they seemed。 I caught some of the hints, but completely missed others。 And I love that it was set in a world that This book took a while to catch me, but by the end, I needed to know what would happened。 And the end, though not a conclusion by any means, was satisfying enough that I felt like this story was done, even though there is so much more story to tell。 This book was full of so many twists and surprises。 Allies who became enemies and enemies who became allies and people who weren't what they seemed。 I caught some of the hints, but completely missed others。 And I love that it was set in a world that was not a magical version of Europe。 Most characters were some variety of brown-skinned, and there were lots of Spanish names。 。。。more

3。5 starsI wasn’t a fan of the beginning of the book and I find Renata to be extremely frustrating。 The last quarter of this book was the best part but I’m still not sure about it。 I’ll probably just get the sequel from the library and read it to determine if I want my own copy or not。

Okay no! I don’t want relationship in book at the beginning。 I wasn’t the biggest fan of the beginning。 It was kinda boring and I think this is a series so uhhh。 I’m not hooked。 The characters were okay I guess。I liked the Spanish vibes!

This book was very slow, I felt no suspense at her having to be a double agent。 It was lack lustre for me。

A retelling of Spanish Inquisition, this is a story of discrimination, injustice, and revenge。 There are quite a few plot twists along the way, as well as betrayals。 This book also includes a magic system that is pretty well explained throughout。 Definitely a worthwhile read。

3。5⭐️I just could not get into it until the very end。 The plot just didn’t speak to me and I didn’t care about the characters very much。

Choose the option that brings you back to me。Before I start this review I want to SCREAM。 Her name is Renata, Ren, Nati, and those are just variations from her actual name。 They call her many other names。 This girl has like 15 names in the book。 *actual scream* Ugh。 It’s not just her。 Des (Andrés but it’s a secret)。 And then Castellan or Cass。 They do it to everyone。 Everyone’s name。 Okay。 Moving on。 I don’t know how I feel about this book。 The first 5% and last 5% are amazing。 The middle was so Choose the option that brings you back to me。Before I start this review I want to SCREAM。 Her name is Renata, Ren, Nati, and those are just variations from her actual name。 They call her many other names。 This girl has like 15 names in the book。 *actual scream* Ugh。 It’s not just her。 Des (Andrés but it’s a secret)。 And then Castellan or Cass。 They do it to everyone。 Everyone’s name。 Okay。 Moving on。 I don’t know how I feel about this book。 The first 5% and last 5% are amazing。 The middle was so long and detailed。 So many tiny little details。 It drove me crazy。 It was also very predictable。 Only one thing surprised me and I suspected it but for another character。 Lol。 But it might still be true since they are related。 So I’ll wait for book two。 I’m conflicted because I’m kind of mad at this book but I can’t wait for the second one。 I need it now。 There was a lot of action。 A lot of blood and death。 So much guilt。 So many missions and spies, double agents, master spies, so much treachery。 The whole book was full of double stabbing and torture but it was just meh to me。 I almost forgot about the weapon。 Now that surprised me and only the end (view spoiler)[ this whole fucking time he could leave the prison!!!!! He has superhuman strength that can bend metal and he can jump from the top of a building and run so fast he’s a blur。 So what the fuck?? Why was he staying there? And he talked about sucking the magic off of people like it was food。 Like he was hungry for it!!! They literally created a monster。 A monster they can’t control。 What??? And he just runs away and then NOTHING。 No one speaks of this new magical creature again。 (hide spoiler)] I really liked Des and Ren’s relationship。 It was steamy。 I need book two to step it up。 Lol。 Even with all the bleh parts it was good。 Anyone looking for a new fantasy full of magic and humans being the monsters, this is the book for you。 I actually really liked this。 The persecuted and hunted were the magical beings and the real monsters in the story were the nonmagical humans。 Their fear turned them into monsters。 But love was so great。 The way non magical parents protected their magical children。。。gah。 That part was great too。 Writing these down makes me realize I liked this much more than I thought。 。。。more

It took awhile for me to get into this one, but I did enjoy it once I got about a third into it。 A bit repetitious, but not bad。

I enjoyed this fast pace, YA fantasy。 I think it didn't get more than 3 stars because I spent most of the book yelling at the MC to communicate to those around her。 Her constant distrust of everyone was pretty annoying。 And her "poor me, no one's had it as hard as me, and I'm the only one who can save the world" shtick got old。 I enjoyed this fast pace, YA fantasy。 I think it didn't get more than 3 stars because I spent most of the book yelling at the MC to communicate to those around her。 Her constant distrust of everyone was pretty annoying。 And her "poor me, no one's had it as hard as me, and I'm the only one who can save the world" shtick got old。 。。。more

3。5 ⭐️So this book was a little slow and a bit boring, especially in the beginning。 I think a map and a mini glossary of the Magic’s would’ve benefitted the readers reading the story。I did feel for the MC, Renata。 She felt alone and that she really didn’t belong anywhere or really have anyone。 She did make hasty decisions but I liked that she let go and learned that she can be who SHE wants to be。This was going to be a 3 star read for me but the last 150 pages saved it and earned half a star。 It 3。5 ⭐️So this book was a little slow and a bit boring, especially in the beginning。 I think a map and a mini glossary of the Magic’s would’ve benefitted the readers reading the story。I did feel for the MC, Renata。 She felt alone and that she really didn’t belong anywhere or really have anyone。 She did make hasty decisions but I liked that she let go and learned that she can be who SHE wants to be。This was going to be a 3 star read for me but the last 150 pages saved it and earned half a star。 It picked up with a twist and more actions。 I was seating on the edge of my seat。 It ends on a cliffhanger and now I’m really excited to read Illusionary to see how it all ties up since I now have many questions。 Also。。 possible love triangle in the next book? I wanted to love this book so badly but I couldn’t get past page 120。 The book itself is so pretty and it feels like it has so much potential but it’s just so boring to the point I think I’d have more fun watching paint dry。 It’s so slow and I really tried to keep reading it because a few people told me it gets better but I just couldn’t even finish it。

Sci Fi Book Club。 This seemed so familiar when I started reading it。 I kept saying, wait have I already read this? But, no。 It was just a familiar formula。 I did like how it ended。

I loved the Spanish influence and rich writing。 Can’t wait to check out more by this author!

Fun and engaging but not that memorable。 I did enjoy the twists and loved the Latin-inspired part mixed with fantasy。 There definitely needs to be more of this in the YA world。

I have some mixed feelings about this book。 On the one hand, I really enjoyed having a fantasy world based in Spanish culture。 There is some interesting character development and a nice twist toward the end。 On the other hand it just felt very much like a number of other things I've read recently despite the setting。 There were also some editing issues (some grammatical things as well as a couple of typos), particularly toward the beginning, that kept pulling me out of the story。 I just feel lik I have some mixed feelings about this book。 On the one hand, I really enjoyed having a fantasy world based in Spanish culture。 There is some interesting character development and a nice twist toward the end。 On the other hand it just felt very much like a number of other things I've read recently despite the setting。 There were also some editing issues (some grammatical things as well as a couple of typos), particularly toward the beginning, that kept pulling me out of the story。 I just feel like I wanted to like this more than I actually did。 I'll read the next book, but I'm a little wary about where one of the storylines is going to go (view spoiler)[I'm particularly afraid that there's going to be a love triangle between Renata and the two brothers and I'm just over the sibling triangles, particularly when there's physical intimacy with both siblings。 It's squicky and I really feel like that's where this is headed (hide spoiler)] 。。。more
