Summary

Habibi, based on a Middle Eastern fable, tells the story of Dodola, who escapes being sold into slavery and rescues an abandoned baby she names Zam。 They live in isolation in an old boat in the desert。 As they age their relationship shifts from mother and son, to brother and sister and eventually lovers。 In the meantime however Dodola is forced to prostitute herself to desert traders in order to provide for Zam。 When he seeks an alternative means of income Dodola is captured by the Sultan and Zam is forced into a quest to try and rescue her。

At heart Habibi is, like Blankets, a profound love story, but it also functions as a parable about the environment and the state of the world。 Set in the place where Christianity and Islam began, it explores the fundamental connection between these religions, and also the relationship between the first and the third world and the increasingly important battle for the earth's resources。

Ambitious, but always deeply felt, Habibi is a beautifully drawn and moving graphic novel that will get a huge amount of attention。

I'm a big fan of Thompson's work and have read everything he's put out, though I was initially put-off by this work。 I let ten years or so go by before trying again, and re-reading everything he wrote in the interim。 The work is much better than I initially thought, and I am very impressed with the research that went into the book and the imaginative power that transformed such research into a coherent and compelling narrative。 But that said, this is a tough work。 In fact, I would say it's an "u I'm a big fan of Thompson's work and have read everything he's put out, though I was initially put-off by this work。 I let ten years or so go by before trying again, and re-reading everything he wrote in the interim。 The work is much better than I initially thought, and I am very impressed with the research that went into the book and the imaginative power that transformed such research into a coherent and compelling narrative。 But that said, this is a tough work。 In fact, I would say it's an "ugly" book, in that the sheer beauty of the work--the illustrations, the embellishments, the relationship of the two main characters--contrasts sharply with the relentless obsession with rape, female objectification, wanton destruction, waste, and degradation。 Obviously, Thompson is against all of this, which is part of the problem: he's so desperate to show how diseased the human race is-and in particular, his imaginative Middle East--that he can't let more than a page or two go by without rubbing it in our faces。 I feel that in a sense, he's atoning for the popularity and escapism of Blankets, and is trying to be more like Joe Sacco, creating works that have a tremendous social agenda。 In some ways, I feel like Habibi was a work of peer pressure by his more famous compatriots, who told him, "you're so talented。。。but you can't waste your talent writing love stories and cartoons of little trolls。" The best parts of the work read like a speculative fiction twist on the 1,001 Nights。 This isn't the Middle East, exactly, but it's a twisted, perverted, and somewhat biased version of the Arabic culture。 While Thompson clearly is enamored with the Koran and the spiritual numerology of that work, he also has incredible disdain for the misogynist culture he that hid women behind veils and harems。 His modern-day Middle East is a fairy tale run amok: the culture lives on sludge and waste, gleefully destroying the environment while selling young children into slavery--whether through marriage to older men, or through sexual bondage to the sultan。 Yet for all the social commentary, his Middle East is very storybook and would not be out of place in the Victorian age。 It's a bit too stereotypical, a bit too 'evil'; indeed, every man is a sex-crazed monster who thinks nothing of raping a ten year-old girl。 In many ways, this is a cartoon version of Game of Thrones, if the entire Middle East were the land of the Dothraki。 It's splendidly drawn and imagined, but the story as a whole wears thin after a hundred pages or so。 His main characters are fabulous, though, and their story is enough to keep you reading through the more tedious and regrettable moments。 That said, I can't escape the feeling that this is the work of a divided man: someone who is staying true to his talent, yet is trying to prove something to his peers。 The gusto of his former storytelling often shines through, only to be obscured by his guilty social conscience。 And while he wants us to revel in the ugliness of the human imagination, I feel that the rape scene in the desert was a bridge too far (even while admitting its thematic importance)。 Simply put, it's a work I admire and enjoyed, but only in small doses。 Whether this is because he does his job too well, or lays it on with too heavy a hand, is for other readers to decide。 What is clear is that Thompson is an artist of genius and a storyteller second to none。 Yet I feel his talents are better served in books like Blankets, Chunky-Rice, Space Dumplins, and his recent comic, Ginseng Roots。 When he can tether his imagination to his lived experience, the story feels 'lived in' and exciting。 When he takes too far a leap into a world that lives only through books and research, it feels distant and dry。 For as much as I liked the characters in his book, I had trouble feeling that they were real, that I could care about them。 I felt pity for them, but not love。 。。。more

I find it difficult to take seriously a book whose ~artfully stylised~ title says something akin to "itithhi。"Also it's a revoltingly fetishistic story and I don't care for it in the slightest! None of the art is unique to Thompson, however, given that he copied the majority of it directly from actual Islamic architecture, art, calligraphy, etc。If you can excuse racism, misogyny, rape apologism, orientalism, Islamophobia, cultural appropriation, cultural fetishism, exoticism, and CSA, then。。。 still don't bother with this book, because there's nothing left。 My final thoughts on the book is that we should issue a moratorium on Westerners writing about Arab culture, and specifically Western men writing about Arab women。 。。。more

This is the first time I've ever wished I could give a book zero stars。 This book is a fetishization of a strange caricature my culture and I truly hope no one else has to suffer through these 600 pages of garbage。 I had high hopes for this book。 I wanted to like it even though the author wasn't Arab himself, I thought he'd have done enough research into the culture to have a proper understanding of it before he wrote, published and profited off of it。 This was not the case at all。 He was no ide This is the first time I've ever wished I could give a book zero stars。 This book is a fetishization of a strange caricature my culture and I truly hope no one else has to suffer through these 600 pages of garbage。 I had high hopes for this book。 I wanted to like it even though the author wasn't Arab himself, I thought he'd have done enough research into the culture to have a proper understanding of it before he wrote, published and profited off of it。 This was not the case at all。 He was no idea what he's writing about and that's made clear very early on in the book。 1。 He puts all of the middle east under one umbrella of culture, clearly not even bothering to use basic logic to realize that a region this big will have multiple, unique but interconnected cultures。 2。 He makes assumptions about how things worked in "ancient Arabia" that are clearly just based random guesses with no factual basis whatsoever(topics like slavery, marriage and royalty)3。 He not only sexualizes the CHILDREN IN THE NOVEL but he does it a way that is extraordinarily racist and false。 This is the worst book I have ever read。 。。。more

。。。more
