Summary

‘Incredibly funny, compulsively readable’ The Times

The Discworld is very much like our own – if our own were to consist of a flat planet balanced on the back of four elephants which stand on the back of a giant turtle, that is 。 。

'What shall we do?' said Twoflower
'Panic?' said Rincewind hopefully。 He always held that panic was the best means of survival。

As it moves towards a seemingly inevitable collision with a malevolent red star, the Discworld could do with a hero。

What it doesn’t need is a singularly inept and cowardly wizard, still recovering from the trauma of falling off the edge of the world, or a well-meaning tourist and his luggage which has a mind (and legs) of its own。

Which is a shame, because that's all there is 。 。 。

Always a good timeDon’t know how many times I have read this book, but it is always new and delightful。 So much fun!

I love the way this book actually thinks skeptical like a reader would do when the read something。Good example in the dutch translation: "fiscale; als een vis kaal achter。" Just loved it also I just received the tax-papers。 All the jokes and very skeptical answers and idiot things other people do。。。 It is so correct as if it was happening for real。I definitely will read the next book。 I laughed most of the time and though I couldn't read the first book because the library didn't have it I was ab I love the way this book actually thinks skeptical like a reader would do when the read something。Good example in the dutch translation: "fiscale; als een vis kaal achter。" Just loved it also I just received the tax-papers。 All the jokes and very skeptical answers and idiot things other people do。。。 It is so correct as if it was happening for real。I definitely will read the next book。 I laughed most of the time and though I couldn't read the first book because the library didn't have it I was able to follow it (but I did saw the movie that was made about the first book, still long time ago)。One minus it has no chapters。。。 So you always stop in the story when you stop reading and that's why it took my longer to finish the book。 。。。more

One of my earliest Discworld reads and I was worried I wouldn't like it 20 years later。 Turns out, it's still great。 More crude than later stuff, but much better than Colour of Magic。 One of my earliest Discworld reads and I was worried I wouldn't like it 20 years later。 Turns out, it's still great。 More crude than later stuff, but much better than Colour of Magic。 。。。more

Slightly more unfocused than the later books。 Pratchett obviously honed his craft。 But still a great read。 I had heard that the audio on these early books is dreadful, but it seemed fine to me, using headphones。 I could hear some background noise if I listened on the speakers on my phone, but with earphones it curiously wasn't there。 Slightly more unfocused than the later books。 Pratchett obviously honed his craft。 But still a great read。 I had heard that the audio on these early books is dreadful, but it seemed fine to me, using headphones。 I could hear some background noise if I listened on the speakers on my phone, but with earphones it curiously wasn't there。 。。。more

I thought this one was better than the first one。 Maybe I got into the quirkiness of the story a bit more or I had more background and knew what to expect from the characters, but this one didn't feel like as much work as the first one。I was sad to see that our twosome goes their separate ways at the end, so I hope they hook back up at some point。But, I have got to say I had to crack up a Cohen the Barbarian, the octogenarian warrior! He was so funny。 LOL, and Twoflowers outrage about burning bo I thought this one was better than the first one。 Maybe I got into the quirkiness of the story a bit more or I had more background and knew what to expect from the characters, but this one didn't feel like as much work as the first one。I was sad to see that our twosome goes their separate ways at the end, so I hope they hook back up at some point。But, I have got to say I had to crack up a Cohen the Barbarian, the octogenarian warrior! HA, he wasn't mad that they burning the books but just that they weren't using the fire for anything useful like keeping warm or lighting a pipe! Just too funny。I'm about to go on to book three which seems to follow a different storyline, so I'll just have to see what kind of trouble the author is going to think up for this next book! 。。。more

I still haven't read all the Discworld faction books, but of the ones I have read, Rincewind's stories are my favorite。 I still haven't read all the Discworld faction books, but of the ones I have read, Rincewind's stories are my favorite。 。。。more

I’m really going to miss twoflower。 This book was just as fun as the first, and I am so excited to see what’s to come。

Ocena: 3+Wrażenia: Wiadomo, że nowsze części lepsze, ale i starym Rincewindem nie pogardzę。 I Cohenem Barbarzyńcą。 I wędrującymi sklepami。 I dziaduniem trollem。 Dla kogo: Dla tych, którym też brakuje zapachu Ankh-Morpork。

Rincewind and Twoflower ought to get a room at this point。

Aww, I love it!

This is my second Pratchett book and I just can’t get over how charming his books are。 They’re so comfy and heartfelt。 This was the break from non-stop epic fantasy that I needed。 I’m excited to continue reading about the Discworld on the back of four elephants on the back of a giant turtle shell!

Slightly better than the first。 At least this one felt like a more cohesive plot。 Was it my favorite book ever? Nah。 Was it the worst book ever? Not even close。 I've heard the third is much much better, so here we go。Also, chapters are good things, Sir Terry。 But I can appreciate the symbolism of not having chapters and just being one journey the whole way through。 I guess。 Slightly better than the first。 At least this one felt like a more cohesive plot。 Was it my favorite book ever? 9/10 -- I liked this one better than The Colour of Magic! It's still not as strong as later Discworld books, but you can tell Pratchett is gaining a foothold on how he envisions the world to be (though it was jarring to see another Weatherwax enter the picture, who I know for a fact is not relevant to Granny's story)。 The Luggage and Bethan were my favorite characters, and of course Rincewind is as pitiful as ever。 This book is the most Douglas Adams-y so far; I'd never really seen the influence 9/10 -- I liked this one better than The Colour of Magic!

Another funny, very entertaining book。

The important thing about having lots of things to remember is that you’ve got to go somewhere afterwards where you can remember them, you see? You’ve got to stop。 You haven’t really been anywhere until you’ve got back home。

A fun romp from the late, great Terry Pratchett, and a marked improvement on the first Discworld book, The Colour of Magic。 I said in my review of that earlier book that I needed more from its successor to be convinced of Pratchett's brilliance, and I am happy to say I have received such evidence。 Similar in tone to The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic nevertheless has much more about it: for one thing, this one actually has a plot。 The jokes also come much thicker and faster and never grate A fun romp from the late, great Terry Pratchett, and a marked improvement on the first Discworld book, The Colour of Magic。 I said in my review of that earlier book that I needed more from its successor to be convinced of Pratchett's brilliance, and I am happy to say I have received such evidence。 Similar in tone to The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic nevertheless has much more about it: for one thing, this one actually has a plot。 The jokes also come much thicker and faster and never grate (I only groaned once: at the looters/luters pun on page 238)。 I'm not quite 'there' yet as a fan, but I'm becoming increasingly convinced that the Discworld is going to be a good place for me to spend the odd afternoon。 。。。more

(8/10)- This is a very fun book。 It’s overall pretty enjoyable。 The world building is amazing, the characters are great, and pretty much everything else is good。 The only thing I didn’t love is the writing/absence of female characters。 There were some, but not many。

Actually a direct follow-on to the Colour of Magic, which I understand are rarer later in the series, and another excellent book。 One of my favourite things is how Terry Pratchett just occasionally goes off on tangents regarding absurd bits of worldbuilding, and it’s a delight to read。 I’m so glad there’s so much more Discworld to work through, because I’m eager for more like this。
