Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - From the author of Uprooted and Spinning Silver comes the first book of the Scholomance trilogy, the story of an unwilling dark sorceress who is destined to rewrite the rules of magic。

"The dark school of magic I've been waiting for。" Katherine Arden, author of Winternight Trilogy

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life。

Everyone loves Orion Lake。 Everyone else, that is。 Far as I'm concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself。 I'm not joining his pack of adoring fans。

I don't need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do。 Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts, I'm probably the most dangerous thing in the place。 Just give me a chance and I'll level mountains and kill untold millions, make myself the dark queen of the world。

At least, that's what the world expects。 Most of the other students in here would be delighted if Orion killed me like one more evil thing that's crawled out of the drains。 Sometimes I think they want me to turn into the evil witch they assume I am。 The school certainly does。

But the Scholomance isn't getting what it wants from me。 And neither is Orion Lake。 I may not be anyone's idea of the shining hero, but I'm going to make it out of this place alive, and I'm not going to slaughter thousands to do it, either。

Although I'm giving serious consideration to just one

With flawless mastery, Naomi Novik creates a school bursting with magic like you've never seen before, and a heroine for the ages--a character so sharply realized and so richly nuanced that she will live on in hearts and minds for generations to come。

Wasn’t a bad read。 It was very description heavy and lots of world building through explanations。 I liked the characters though。 (Although I think we could definitely find out more about Orion but I suspect she left him a bit mysterious on purpose)。 Teetering between 4 & 4。5 ⭐️

This book was an enjoyable read in the sense that it drew me into a fascinating - if dark - world。 It definitely kept me reading。 The protagonist is set up to fail from the start, an outcast through no fault of her own, but somehow, she forges a path for herself, and gains a band of friends along the way, all while struggling not to compromise her morals, even when it seems necessary for survival。 A compelling story。

The stream of consciousness style of writing was hard to get into at first but I really enjoyed the book and the dynamic between Orion and El。

I liked this book because it was like a dark version of magic school。 I haven't read much fantasy that wasn't all unicorns and wizards, so this one was very interesting。 I will say that there was an extreme lack of dialog, at least in my opinion, and that made it a little boring at some parts, but otherwise I really liked it。 The world that Naomi Novik invented is really interesting。 I liked this book because it was like a dark version of magic school。 I haven't read much fantasy that wasn't all unicorns and wizards, so this one was very interesting。 I will say that there was an extreme lack of dialog, at least in my opinion, and that made it a little boring at some parts, but otherwise I really liked it。 The world that Naomi Novik invented is really interesting。 。。。more

Easy read that I couldn't put down。 A fantasy version of nature vs nurture, and it was so fun。 The main character's stream of consciousness is sometimes long, but always includes anecdotes and develops the character further。 It feels like a lot of time passes in the book, but doesn't really- lots of events in that packed in。 Fun magic rules/structure and you get to know the characters well! Highly recommend if you enjoy magic lore, sarcasm, and teenagers。 Warning: 1st book of 3 and this is the o Easy read that I couldn't put down。 A fantasy version of nature vs nurture, and it was so fun。 The main character's stream of consciousness is sometimes long, but always includes anecdotes and develops the character further。 It feels like a lot of time passes in the book, but doesn't really- lots of events in that packed in。 Fun magic rules/structure and you get to know the characters well! Abandoned。 Just not for me at all。

Start and finish in one day。 That says it all but if it doesn’t: a lovely take on the magic school trope。 Strong female leads and a magic system with rules that feels appropriately mysterious and accepted by the folks who live within it。

I read and loved "Spinning Silver" and "Uprooted。" I wanted to love this book -- but ultimately just couldn't, quite。Don't get me wrong。 The heroine has a remarkable, unique, entertaining narrative voice。 The setup is extremely interesting。 Kind of a cross between Harry Potter and the Hunger Games。It's just that the infodumping is persistent and constant。 The story is somehow confusing。 I never really felt I had a handle on how magic works in this universe, why the school works in the way it doe I read and loved "Spinning Silver" and "Uprooted。" I wanted to love this book -- but ultimately just couldn't, quite。Don't get me wrong。 The heroine has a remarkable, unique, entertaining narrative voice。 The setup is extremely interesting。 Kind of a cross between Harry Potter and the Hunger Games。It's just that the infodumping is persistent and constant。 The story is somehow confusing。 I never really felt I had a handle on how magic works in this universe, why the school works in the way it does, or what is really going on in a larger sense。 So the underlying construct of the story is somehow weak and problematic, and the plot never quite convincing or satisfying。But I did ultimately enjoy the book, because of the narrative voice, the unique setup and Novik's prose style。 I would recommend it, with reservations。 And yes, I probably will read the second one。 。。。more

I loved the premise of this book。 I loved the monsters and the whole idea。。。。。。 but I did not love this book。 Not at all。 3 stars might be a little generous。 I found this book to be a pretty dense read with lots of random info drops that took up pages and pages。 I feel like it slowed the story and really took away from the excitement。 After 2 weeks of reading it, I almost DNF, but I pushed through and can’t say I am glad that I did。 I feel like this book had so much potential, but for me, it jus I loved the premise of this book。 I loved the monsters and the whole idea。。。。。。 but I did not love this book。 Not at all。 3 stars might be a little generous。 I found this book to be a pretty dense read with lots of random info drops that took up pages and pages。 I feel like it slowed the story and really took away from the excitement。 After 2 weeks of reading it, I almost DNF, but I pushed through and can’t say I am glad that I did。 I feel like this book had so much potential, but for me, it just didn’t get there。 I still love some of the concepts and ideas I’m this book, but the main character was obnoxious and the story was just too slow for me to really WANT to keep reading the series。 。。。more

3。5。 Loved the concept, world building, and relationship between El and Orion; just couldn’t get past the narrator’s whiny, rambling monologues。 Will still give the next book in the series a try, since I loved Novik’s “Uprooted。”

I am completely torn when it comes to reviewing this book。 On the one hand, I didn't like it much。。。 but I did keep reading it。 The main reason for my dislike was the lack of action - so much happened in this novel, but we were just told about it all, with very little dialogue or movement on the page。 Just paragraph after paragraph after paragraph of descriptive prose。 Don't get me wrong, the prose was good - there was just too much of it! If I could give this book negative stars, I would。 Or better yet, I should be awarded stars for finishing it。 A word the author uses repetitively throughout A Deadly Education’s tedious 313 pages is “slog”。 I couldn’t have come up with a better word to describe my experience reading this pile of trash disguised as a book。 From the self-described “aggressively rude” main character to the pages and pages of info-dumping and everything in between, this book was an exercise in literary torture。 Any If I could give this book negative stars, I would。 Or better yet, I should be awarded stars for finishing it。 A word the author uses repetitively throughout A Deadly Education’s tedious 313 pages is “slog”。 I couldn’t have come up with a better word to describe my experience reading this pile of trash disguised as a book。 From the self-described “aggressively rude” main character to the pages and pages of info-dumping and everything in between, this book was an exercise in literary torture。 Any scenes with action or plot development are interrupted with pages of unintelligible backstory and witty asides from the main character。 By time you return to whatever action was happening, you’ve long forgotten what was happening in the first places。 The chapters are an average of 40 pages a piece and the only dialogue is indulgent snark doled out by the main character。 It’s just annoying and frankly exhausting。 This was perhaps one of the worst books I’ve ever read and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone。 。。。more
