This book is not one of my favourites by Victoria Hislop。 An easy read but The Island is much better。 I still want to go to Greece at some point。

Απογοητευτικό δυστυχώς και ανυπομονουσα τοσο πολυ να το διαβασω。 Σελιδες γραμμενες χωρις νόημα υπαρξης。 Η ιστορια του Μανωλη Βανδουλακη μετα το φονικό ξετυλίγεται μέσα απο τις σελιδες του βιβλιου και το μονο ενδιαφέρον ίσως ειναι οτι μαθαινουμε ποιος ειναι ο πατέρας της Σοφιας。

A sequel to The Island， something lots of readers have been waiting for for years Part of me was underwhelmed - I think I wanted a new story & this feels more like tying up loose ends That said I suspect the characters & story will stay with me longer than many I've been more enthralled with while reading。 It is so special to be back on Crete though & memories of personal trips to Elounda & Spinalonga。 A sequel to The Island， something lots of readers have been waiting for for years Part of me was underwhelmed - I think I wanted a new story & this feels more like tying up loose ends That said I suspect the characters & story will stay with me longer than many I've been more enthralled with while reading。 It is so special to be back on Crete though & memories of personal trips to Elounda & Spinalonga。 。。。more

The story is set on the island of Crete during the 1950s and is the follow up book to The Island。 The island is celebrating the end of leprosy and a big party is being held to welcome home the survivors。 But with the stigma of the disease it was never going to be straightforward。 I really enjoyed this book and being transported to the Greek Islands。 It was nice to revisit the story again and find out what happened to the characters。 I always enjoy books that add some factual elements to a story The story is set on the island of Crete during the 1950s and is the follow up book to The Island。 The island is celebrating the end of leprosy and a big party is being held to welcome home the survivors。 But with the stigma of the disease it was never going to be straightforward。 I really enjoyed this book and being transported to the Greek Islands。 It was nice to revisit the story again and find out what happened to the characters。 I always enjoy books that add some factual elements to a story and learning more about leprosy and the consequences of the disease were an eye opener。 。。。more

I loved The Island， the pre-cursor to this book。 It was beautifully written and I really got drawn into the story and its characters。 One August Night continues with the same characters， completing their stories。 It’s a lovely read and I’m glad I read it but it’s not as profound as The Island。

Well worth waiting for。What a beautiful written story full of emotions in true Cretan style。I loved Maria who had been through so much but still managed to see the best in people。 Her sister Anna was so completely different and must admit that I felt sorry for Maniolis and hope he found life better in Australia。

I really enjoyed the Island and when I found out about the sequel one August night。 I was delighted to read the book。 I really enjoyed it and it was nice to hear what happened to Manolis， his friend and what happened to Anna husband。 It was nice to get more information on Marie her visits towards Anna husband。 There is omniscient narrative going through the book。 Straight away I got back into the characters I left in the island。 I found this book an easy read and could not put it down。 I enjoyed I really enjoyed the Island and when I found out about the sequel one August night。 I was delighted to read the book。 I really enjoyed it and it was nice to hear what happened to Manolis， his friend and what happened to Anna husband。 It was nice to get more information on Marie her visits towards Anna husband。 There is omniscient narrative going through the book。 Straight away I got back into the characters I left in the island。 I found this book an easy read and could not put it down。 I enjoyed be back in Greece。 Thank you NetGalley for letting me read this book。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it， click here。 I cannot fathom the fact that I even considered buying that book。。。 I don't understand why Mrs Victoria wanted to write a sequel to the Island。。 It was merely a waste of time and nothing more。。 Although It was nice hearing from some characters such as Manolis and Andreas， the story did not provide any more closure than the Island did。。。 These characters were already complete。。 There was no need for her to drag the storyline any longer。。 I was hoping that Manolis would find out eventually that he I cannot fathom the fact that I even considered buying that book。。。 I don't understand why Mrs Victoria wanted to write a sequel to the Island。。 It was merely a waste of time and nothing more。。 Although It was nice hearing from some characters such as Manolis and Andreas， the story did not provide any more closure than the Island did。。。 These characters were already complete。。 There was no need for her to drag the storyline any longer。。 I was hoping that Manolis would find out eventually that he is the man who fathers Sophia， but no。。 Andreas' letter never reached its destination。。。 In the whole， the book did not introduce any new storyline， intriguing enough for the reader， and it lacked in quality， compared to the Island。。 。。。more

Ανυπομονούσα να διαβάσω τη συνέχεια από το Νησί και η αλήθεια είναι πως δε με απογοήτευσε。Ναι δεν έχει βέβαια την ένταση που έχει το νησί γιατί όπως συνήθως συμβαίνει το βιβλίο με το βασικό στόρυ που αγαπήθηκε πολύ， είναι δύσκολο να ξεπεραστεί。Παρ'ολα αυτά απόλαυσα όπως πάντα τη γραφή της Χίσλοπ και θυμήθηκα ξανά την ιστορία του πρώτου βιβλίου。Το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο μας εξηγεί και τη σκοπιά του Μανώλη， εστιάζει λίγο παραπάνω στα τελευταία γεγονότα που προηγήθηκαν του θανάτου της Άννας και βέβαια Ανυπομονούσα να διαβάσω τη συνέχεια από το Νησί και η αλήθεια είναι πως δε με απογοήτευσε。Ναι δεν έχει βέβαια την ένταση που έχει το νησί γιατί όπως συνήθως συμβαίνει το βιβλίο με το βασικό στόρυ που αγαπήθηκε πολύ， είναι δύσκολο να ξεπεραστεί。Παρ'ολα αυτά απόλαυσα όπως πάντα τη γραφή της Χίσλοπ και θυμήθηκα ξανά την ιστορία του πρώτου βιβλίου。Το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο μας εξηγεί και τη σκοπιά του Μανώλη， εστιάζει λίγο παραπάνω στα τελευταία γεγονότα που προηγήθηκαν του θανάτου της Άννας και βέβαια ακολουθεί τη πορεία των κεντρικών χαρακτήρων κυρίως όμως του Μανώλη και του Αντρέα。Το διάβασα πολύ γρήγορα， μου φάνηκε πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα η εξέλιξη που σκέφτηκε η συγγραφέας και νομίζω πως χρειαζόταν η συνέχεια αυτή για να κλείσει πιο ολοκληρωμένα η ιστορία που γνωρίσαμε στο Νησί。 。。。more

I loved the first book， how we learnt about Alexis’s past， her mother Sofia and her link with the leper colony。 We shared Maria’s journey to the island and later when she went back to the mainland。 This was a disappointment， I wanted to know how Maria’s life continued when she returned， how Sofia coped without her real parents， did Maria stay in touch with her old friends， did she revisit Spinalonga？ I wasn’t really interested in the adulterous pair or the murderer。 These three are not relevant I loved the first book， how we learnt about Alexis’s past， her mother Sofia and her link with the leper colony。 We shared Maria’s journey to the island and later when she went back to the mainland。 This was a disappointment， I wanted to know how Maria’s life continued when she returned， how Sofia coped without her real parents， did Maria stay in touch with her old friends， did she revisit Spinalonga？ I wasn’t really interested in the adulterous pair or the murderer。 These three are not relevant to the story of Alexis and Sofia in the first book。A chance missed。 。。。more

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book， The Island is my favorite book ever so I sat down with a plan to read this in one sitting。 Although I enjoyed it， it is nowhere near as engrossing as the Island was。 I felt as though Maria's character had undergone a total personalty transplant。 I couldn't wait to hear about her life after returning from Spinalonga but I found she lacked interest in this book and I had difficulty reconnecting with her。 I would have liked the book to have been more ab I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book， The Island is my favorite book ever so I sat down with a plan to read this in one sitting。 Although I enjoyed it， it is nowhere near as engrossing as the Island was。 I felt as though Maria's character had undergone a total personalty transplant。 I couldn't wait to hear about her life after returning from Spinalonga but I found she lacked interest in this book and I had difficulty reconnecting with her。 I would have liked the book to have been more about her and her dad's lives。 A good book but sadly not a patch on The Island。 。。。more

Only worth reading if you have already read The Island。 It finishes off the story but fails to convey the spirit of Greece in the way that Victoria Hislop’s other Greek novels do。

I enjoyed this book but have not given more than 4 stars as it took me time to get into it， as all of the names confused me。 It is some time since I read The Island。 Then once I got into it it finished。 I found it rather short for a story of this kind。 It felt that the author ran out of ideas or left it possible to develop another story later
