Summary

It was a long fall from Clan Heir to common thief, but Aaron never wanted any part of his father's brutal outlander reign。 In fact, besides coin purses and jewels, there's very little in all of Cisali that interests Aaron, until he stumbles-quite literally-into a prince's bedchamber。。。

Prince Davish of Ischia is a skilled swordsman both on the field and beneath the sheets, at least when he isn't outrageously drunk。 But the wine helps him forget all the ways he's disappointed his father, his family, and soon enough, his young bride-to-be。。。

A trained Wizard of the Nine with more raw talent than real-world experience, Princess Chandra has no interest in the politically arranged marriage。 She flees to the royal city of Ischia seeking a way out of the union。 But there, she discovers something far more shocking than Prince Davish's rakish reputation。。。

The Stone of Ischia has been stolen。 A powerful talisman, The Stone protects the city from the active volcano that looms over its terraces and streets。 Without it, Ischia will be destroyed and the kingdom of Cisali will fall。 Its only hope is an unlikely band of heroes-a failed thief, a drunken prince, and a runaway wizard-who must face pirates, powerful magic, and their own carefully guarded secrets in order to find and restore the Stone of Ischia。

CW: (view spoiler)[ alcoholism, trauma, death of child, death of parent, mentions of torture, homophobia (hide spoiler)] This was a sweet quest story with a lot of great elements。 I enjoyed reading about the characters, who were likable but also flawed。 I haven't seen many characters struggling with alcoholism, so it was good to see that portrayed here。 Aaron's trauma is pretty pronounced and difficult at times to read about, but he is such a likable character, so I enjoyed seeing his growth。 I CW: (view spoiler)[ alcoholism, trauma, death of child, death of parent, mentions of torture, homophobia (hide spoiler)] This was a sweet quest story with a lot of great elements。 I enjoyed reading about the characters, who were likable but also flawed。 I haven't seen many characters struggling with alcoholism, so it was good to see that portrayed here。 Aaron's trauma is pretty pronounced and difficult at times to read about, but he is such a likable character, so I enjoyed seeing his growth。 I would have liked to see some elements of the story fleshed out a bit more or explored more deeply, but overall I enjoyed it a lot and I'll be adding more of this author to my TBR。 。。。more

This is a nice, traditional high-fantasy quest novel with a richly drawn cast of characters。 It's kind of like a D&D game with a slight tilt to the PG-13 side。 Nothing Earth-shaking (well, except maybe the volcano), but a pleasantly engaging adventure。 This is a nice, traditional high-fantasy quest novel with a richly drawn cast of characters。 It's kind of like a D&D game with a slight tilt to the PG-13 side。 Nothing Earth-shaking (well, except maybe the volcano), but a pleasantly engaging adventure。 。。。more

I'm realising this most likely won't appeal to anyone who isn't into 90s fantasy with clumsy but endearing queer elements as well as into some very oddly configured found families, but I happen to adore both so five stars it is。 I'm realising this most likely won't appeal to anyone who isn't into 90s fantasy with clumsy but endearing queer elements as well as into some very oddly configured found families, but I happen to adore both so five stars it is。 。。。more

As a female fantasy reader, it is SO refreshing to have minor female characters in positions of power。。。ie。 (forgive inaccurate memory) but generals, guards etc。 are female as often as male。 Huff's world is a breath of fresh air for non-normative gender roles! Sexually fluid and gay male leads! A heroine who cares more about developing her talent and friendships than finding romance! 30% in, and my biggest complaint is that the POV is ALL over the place, with no clear distinction of when it switches from one speaker to another。 Very frustrating, but I'll push through。 30% in, and my biggest complaint is that the POV is ALL over the place, with no clear distinction of when it switches from one speaker to another。 Very frustrating, but I'll push through。 。。。more

This really impressed me。 It's a standalone fantasy with a tight plot, well-paced action, character development, slow-burn romance, and interesting world。 And it's less than 300 pages。 The dynamics between Aaron, Darvish, and Chandra are so good。 For those interested, 2 of the main characters are bisexual, and 2 are described as not white。 This did not feel like the standard medieval Britain setting at all。 But I wish Aaron's eyebrows hadn't been repeatedly referred to as demon wings。 I can't wa This really impressed me。 It's a standalone fantasy with a tight plot, well-paced action, character development, slow-burn romance, and interesting world。 And it's less than 300 pages。 The dynamics between Aaron, Darvish, and Chandra are so good。 For those interested, 2 of the main characters are bisexual, and 2 are described as not white。 This did not feel like the standard medieval Britain setting at all。 But I wish Aaron's eyebrows hadn't been repeatedly referred to as demon wings。 I can't wait to read more of Tanya Huff's books and see what she can do with a series。 。。。more

I feel this is clearly a character-driven story, with the three mains and their relationships being the focus, but despite a pretty good setup, with three very different characters that start clashing at the beginning of their quest, it falls a bit short。 I think it owes much of this to the way the povs constantly shift。 It's not only slightly jarring, to skip between one character and the other from paragraph to paragrapgh, but it also doesn't allow the reader to really understand how any of th I feel this is clearly a character-driven story, with the three mains and their relationships being the focus, but despite a pretty good setup, with three very different characters that start clashing at the beginning of their quest, it falls a bit short。 I think it owes much of this to the way the povs constantly shift。 It's not only slightly jarring, to skip between one character and the other from paragraph to paragrapgh, but it also doesn't allow the reader to really understand how any of them feels about the others, how they perceive each other and how their impressions of one another evolve。 And because of this they feel undeveloped, and the emotional beats don't land, which a book that has no rich worldbuilding or interesting side characters to fall back to can't really afford。 It managed to rise up to three instead of two stars because of Darvish alone <3。 I do love a facetious, flippant and dissolute prince who has been made to believe he has nothing else going on for him。 。 。。。more

Also, the central trio has a couple of moments when they just look at one another and burst out laughing - but why, why do they do that? They barely know each other, they haven't been together through much and what little they have, hasn't been described well enough), using blatant mistakes such as "could care less" (if she could care less, then she really still cared a little, what is not obvious about this), relying on ridiculously bad stereotypes (so the fat mean guy is the bad guy, who could have guessed?) and lastly hoping that all the humor can be contained in a barrage of repetitive fat jokes。 There's plenty of those and it's just awkward。 I also don't think the author's skills were up to tackling such a challenging topic as a recovering alcoholic - come on, now, it was so childishly and naively portrayed, it made me cringe。 As I said the idea of the characters was not bad, but the execution was - just one example: Chandra is the young teenage girl who spent most of her life in a tower (she is also an incredibly powerful wizard but we'll let that one slide) and when she overhears Darvish, now sober and super-functioning, comforting the constantly PTSD-ing Aaron by cradling him in his arms (ok … ?) and yet neither Aaron nor Darvish use that wonderful moment to confess to their "obvious" feelings of eternal sweet LOVE, the wise Chandra thinks "Men …" - but what does she know about men? What indeed, dear Author? And what does she care for these two guys she has known for two weeks, one of which she spent watching Darvish go through a horrible bout of delirium tremens? And now he's supposed to be all ok and in love? What the actual fuck, is this book bad。 。。。more

Chandra, Aaron, and Darvish were all broken in some way and they all chose, in their own way, to close themselves off from others。 They're all stubbornly flawed and afraid to confront their demons, but they are somehow able to see the value in each other。 Really, they should be very compelling characters。 Unfortunately, we jump POVs so often that there's no time to linger on any one character and, yes, they all have very sad backstories, but we don't see them struggling to grow through it。 They Chandra, Aaron, and Darvish were all broken in some way and they all chose, in their own way, to close themselves off from others。 They're all stubbornly flawed and afraid to confront their demons, but they are somehow able to see the value in each other。 Really, they should be very compelling characters。 Unfortunately, we jump POVs so often that there's no time to linger on any one character and, yes, they all have very sad backstories, but we don't see them struggling to grow through it。 They mostly just mope。 The narrative tells me that Aaron is struggling to remain detached because of his companions, but we never actually see him interacting with them, so sure。 Chandra's idea of a good life now has Aaron and Darvish in it, but I have no idea how that happened because we don't see them interacting。There is approximately zero chemistry between them--not sexually, just。。。 as people。 They spend a good chunk of the book traveling together and I swear, they barely interact。 The narration tells me that they like each other and are struggling with that fact, but we never see them interacting and all of their narration individually is focused on their own woes。 Like, Aaron is incredibly distracted by how attracted he is to Darvish--but that's about Aaron having trouble overcoming his homophobic upbringing, not about Darvish。 Or Darvish feels jealous because Aaron and Chandra have an 'understanding' (which is, by the way, the only friendly interaction we see between Aaron and Chandra)--but again, this is about Darvish feeling guilty and shameful, not about how he feels about Aaron or Chandra。This all is further harmed by the occasional zoom-outs to see what the secondary characters are doing, so any tension that could come from the uncertainty of the situation is immediately killed。 Were they right about who took the stone? -- the answer, conveniently narrated by the man who ordered it! Has Ischia already been destroyed? How much longer do they have? -- oh, look, a POV from Darvish's brother to tell us just that。 Has Chandra's golem worked? -- wonder no more! 。。。more

This books hit such a tender spot for me - it reminded me of the reasons that I loved reading Fantasy as a kid。 The story is nice and quickly paced, the characters are a bit more open than I usually like, but I think toned perfectly for a YA-ish novel。 There is a LOT of world- and background-building that feels like it should lead into a series, but unfortunately it doesn't。 Great, quick read。 Really enjoyed it。 This books hit such a tender spot for me - it reminded me of the reasons that I loved reading Fantasy as a kid。 The story is nice and quickly paced, the characters are a bit more open than I usually like, but I think toned perfectly for a YA-ish novel。 There is a LOT of world- and background-building that feels like it should lead into a series, but unfortunately it doesn't。 Great, quick read。 Really enjoyed it。 。。。more

This is a fully fledged fantasy novel with a LGBTQ+ subplot。 I would highly reccommend this to any fan of high fantasy or lgbtq+ literature。 We have our classic trio of rogue, spellcaster and fighter, who are thrown together by circumstance to go on a quest to save their realm。 It is well written, the characters are fully fledged out and have their own goals and personalities。 A wonderful example of bringing lgbtq+ into classic storytelling, rather than centering the entire story around the roma This is a fully fledged fantasy novel with a LGBTQ+ subplot。 I would highly reccommend this to any fan of high fantasy or lgbtq+ literature。 We have our classic trio of rogue, spellcaster and fighter, who are thrown together by circumstance to go on a quest to save their realm。 It is well written, the characters are fully fledged out and have their own goals and personalities。 A wonderful example of bringing lgbtq+ into classic storytelling, rather than centering the entire story around the romantic/sexual identity of the characters。 。。。more

Probably 3。5 stars。 The plot is just okay。 Not bad but not great。 I knew this going in。 I am not here for the plot。 I am here for the poly relationship and oh man was that good。 I love these love struck morons。 All three characters are fantastic and I adore them and them helplessly pining after each other and thinking the other two are good for each other and being in denial about being sad about that。 They’re disasters and I love them。

2。5 stars。 I really ended up liking the characters, but the writing was pretty weak overall。 With a third person omniscient perspective, sometimes you'd dip in and out of multiple character's heads without so much as a paragraph break。 It made it really difficult to keep track of things, especially when the character's voices weren't really distinct enough。And while I'm definitely a fan of pining and the slow burn, to not even give me any kissing on page??
