A very short, but poignant, story of complicated grief and redemption

Grief is complicated, challenging, and unique。 In this story a girl loses her grandfather, and the loss is deep and sharp indeed。 The two used to do many things together, experience the world and wonder at its many marvels。 When he is gone, the girl is at a loss for what to do。 It seems to her that the best path forward is to protect her hurting heart and she puts it in a bottle。 It is safe, but she no longer experiences wonder and curiosity, or seemingly any emotion at all。 The girl grows up an Grief is complicated, challenging, and unique。 In this story a girl loses her grandfather, and the loss is deep and sharp indeed。 The two used to do many things together, experience the world and wonder at its many marvels。 When he is gone, the girl is at a loss for what to do。 It seems to her that the best path forward is to protect her hurting heart and she puts it in a bottle。 It is safe, but she no longer experiences wonder and curiosity, or seemingly any emotion at all。 The girl grows up and seems isolated and dulled。A chance meeting with a young girl helps to change the outlook of the original girl, and helps to open her back up to life。It brings to mind a quote from Call the Midwife -- from the TV adaptation。 "You will feel better than this。 Maybe not yet, but you will。 You just keep living until you are alive again。" 。。。more

I think this book is for older children because it talks about grief and growing older and younger students may not understand the story。 These older children (4th-6th grade) are at a point in their life where things are changing and they are growing up。 They may experience things they don’t understand and they will see it change who they are。 This book will help them to see figure out how to handle these issues and know that they are now alone。 。。。more

I absolutely loved this book and the way it depicts loss in a child's life。 I love the usage of a REAL anatomical heart in the pages。 I also love how the main character's heart was in the bottle well into her adulthood, and even when she tried, she couldn't get her heart back out。 This is a great way of telling how hard it is to break down the walls we often build around ourselves。 The little girl that helps her get her heart back at the end is absolutely precious, and many times adults melt for I absolutely loved this book and the way it depicts loss in a child's life。 I love the usage of a REAL anatomical heart in the pages。 I also love how the main character's heart was in the bottle well into her adulthood, and even when she tried, she couldn't get her heart back out。 This is a great way of telling how hard it is to break down the walls we often build around ourselves。 The little girl that helps her get her heart back at the end is absolutely precious, and many times adults melt for children, as kids bring such great happiness。 I love how the last couple pages show the main character enjoying the things she enjoyed before she took her heart out, even though it was obviously different because she was now in the chair instead of the person she lost。 I love the reality of this book and how realistic the child's response was to the loss of her person。 This would be a great book for any child, especially one that has yet to experience the death of a loved one and needs to learn how that feels。 Would recommend for any age! 。。。more

I really like the full page illustrations。 Will use in my class because of the illustrations and because of the story as well。 The story is this girl finds a chair and puts her heart in a bottle。 She then becomes lonely and loses her heart。 Another kid finds it and gives it to her and she is back to her normal self。

A sweet and simple picture book about grief。 The metaphor took some explaining for my child to understand, but she enjoyed the tale。

One of the good book from the creator of Lost and found, Oliver Jeffers。 This is a picture book with a good massage。 What would you think will happen if you live without a heart? you will no longer be filled with all the curiosities of the world and didn't take much notice of anything。 Just an empty feeling。 It teaches us the importance of having a heart。 Love it very much。 One of the good book from the creator of Lost and found, Oliver Jeffers。 This is a picture book with a good massage。 What would you think will happen if you live without a heart? you will no longer be filled with all the curiosities of the world and didn't take much notice of anything。 Just an empty feeling。 It teaches us the importance of having a heart。 Love it very much。 。。。more

Beautiful illustrations, beautiful message。 Moral of the story: hearts aren't meant to be put in bottles, even if the risk is loss。 Beautiful illustrations, beautiful message。 Moral of the story: hearts aren't meant to be put in bottles, even if the risk is loss。 。。。more

Un libro que pese a estar ilustrado y tener un lenguaje sencillo que hace creer que esta dirigido a niños retrata una situación que muchos adultos experimentamos。 Ha sido uno de mis favoritos, me parece maravilloso。

“The Heart and the Bottle” is a children’s picture book which but it falls under the category of the contemporary realistic fiction genre。 The story walks you thru the journey of losing someone whether this person has died or left, this book visually details how a person may feel and how they may choose to respond。 The plot explains the process of having someone in your life whom you spend time with, may be related or not but this person has a special place in your heart。 Then they are gone, and “The Heart and the Bottle” is a children’s picture book which but it falls under the category of the contemporary realistic fiction genre。 The story walks you thru the journey of losing someone whether this person has died or left, this book visually details how a person may feel and how they may choose to respond。 The plot explains the process of having someone in your life whom you spend time with, may be related or not but this person has a special place in your heart。 Then they are gone, and your world is different because they are no longer visible or accessible to you。 The characters and the theme compliment one another you see the person in the beginning and then there gone, after the person is no longer around, the character puts her heart in a bottle。 The use of language, and illustrations does not show the actual heart being removed from the body, but it creates the illusion of such。 Afterwards the girl is sad, desolate, very disconnected from reality。 She is clearly affected by this person’s absence。 I believe this book would appeal to young readers because unfortunately we all lose someone whether it be to death or other circumstances this may help them give words to how they feel。 I would use this book and the illustrations to a child who may need some coping suggestions after a major transition in their life。 。。。more

Jeffers uses this story to carefully and sensitively address grief。 This would be a wonderful book for teaching children about grief, however I did not enjoy the association between the loss of all joy for so long。 It seemed as though the character's life was somewhat 'on hold' until she comes into contact with the young girl。 The story shows that it is okay to grieve, but also to move on and continue to live your life (as the character does after some time)。 Jeffers uses this story to carefully and sensitively address grief。 This would be a wonderful book for teaching children about grief, however I did not enjoy the association between the loss of all joy for so long。 It seemed as though the character's life was somewhat 'on hold' until she comes into contact with the young girl。 The story shows that it is okay to grieve, but also to move on and continue to live your life (as the character does after some time)。 。。。more

This was such a sweet, precious book。 This book details the story of a young girl, full of wonder with her youth, who lost a loved one who helped her in her growth, and then shields her heart by protecting it in a bottle。 Oliver Jeffers appeals to children who may have been hurt before and have a difficult time opening up to, trusting, or engaging with others in part to their past traumas, but expresses that later on in life, as the bottle prevented the girl from enjoying things to their full ex This was such a sweet, precious book。 This book details the story of a young girl, full of wonder with her youth, who lost a loved one who helped her in her growth, and then shields her heart by protecting it in a bottle。 Oliver Jeffers appeals to children who may have been hurt before and have a difficult time opening up to, trusting, or engaging with others in part to their past traumas, but expresses that later on in life, as the bottle prevented the girl from enjoying things to their full extent, the importance of working on that。 The ending melted my heart as the girl was able to recover her heart with the help of a young child still filled with that wonder, and that reminds me much of what it will be like to be an educator one day with my very own classroom, having all those littles helping to always bring out the never-aging curiosity I still hold for the world。 Absolutely recommend! 。。。more

“The darker the night, the brighter the stars,The deeper the grief, the closer is God!” ~ Fyodor DostoevskyWe always learn more from that - one little book meant for children than those thousand pager biographies。My eyes welled up upon reading this little story。 It gives me a strange, deep, mystic, visceral feeling that has no match。 No other book has touched me like this in the recent past。Everyone of us have our own grief /sadness and most of us would not be comfortable to reveal it to others。 “The darker the night, the brighter the stars,The deeper the grief, the closer is God!” ~ Fyodor DostoevskyWe always learn more from that - one little book meant for children than those thousand pager biographies。My eyes welled up upon reading this little story。 It gives me a strange, deep, mystic, visceral feeling that has no match。 No other book has touched me like this in the recent past。Everyone of us have our own grief /sadness and most of us would not be comfortable to reveal it to others。This story touches the most tender part of our heart and tells us how to come to terms with our grief。Overall。。 a must read for all the people with broken/brittle hearts。 。。。more

This book teaches a valuable lesson, but would take some reading between the lines for young readers to grasp。 The story tells about a young girl who loses someone she loves。 She grows to put her heart in a bottle to trap it from ever getting hurt again, only to find out that trapping her heart meant trapping her feelings and curiosity of the world。 She eventually discovers that in order to feel good again, she must open her heart to that loved one again。

This book is perfect。 It deals with the subject of loss for children。 It’s short, sweet and really describes the healing process in a way they can understand it。 I’m an adult and I loved it。 It brought a lot of comfort to my heart。
