I didn’t like this。 There were some interesting parts like Oryx’s childhood and the flower business but that’s pretty much it。 My mind kept drifting。 I even had to read the wiki page to figure out what the heck this was about。 The narrator was good。

Huh? I started reading Game of Thrones before Oryx & Crake and couldn’t stand not knowing what the hell was going on。 So I picked up Oryx & Crake, and while I can say the same thing about this book, Margaret Atwood is a genius who can pull me into her writing even when it takes half the book to start to piece together the story。 She is a master story teller。 Her characters and complex and well developed, and the story is full of unbelievably imaginative detail。 I loved reading the book, but some Huh? The book opens with a dude on a beach in a post-apocalyptic setting, which had me excited。 From there, Atwood winds up the story through flashbacks and progressively reveals her idea of the end of the world, a structure which will be familiar to any reader of the Handmaid’s Tale。 I will say right away that the book gave the impression of having been written rapidly and that the elements were a little bit tossed together。 The overall tone is ironic and humorous, which I liked。 But the more it pro The book opens with a dude on a beach in a post-apocalyptic setting, which had me excited。 From there, Atwood winds up the story through flashbacks and progressively reveals her idea of the end of the world, a structure which will be familiar to any reader of the Handmaid’s Tale。 I will say right away that the book gave the impression of having been written rapidly and that the elements were a little bit tossed together。 The overall tone is ironic and humorous, which I liked。 But the more it progressed, the less it held together。The first part is still clockwork – we discover the childhood of the main character and wonder how his innocence will be crushed。 Sadly, the plot elements that are introduced will be mostly left behind and left to our imagination。 Atwood’s narrative preference is to only give out information begrudgingly, which leads to the characters never discussing the state of the world when it is obvious that a catastrophe is at play。 They live in a bubble。 The middle part is the adolescent years which flow into the adult years and which are by far the strangest part in the novel。 The friendship of Crake and Jimmy is based mainly on watching extreme content online, an ethical and moral WTF that just makes the characters weird and unrelatable。 Oryx appears quite late in the story, and she is mostly unrelatable as well as the traumatized kid with a protective layer that makes her appear simple。 There is little character development from there on。 I cannot say that any are likable or that Atwood is good at dialogue。 There are even some unpleasant YA undertones which to me is synonymous with self-centered whiny characters that would have the potential to save the world if they were not emotionally upset with dilemmas and their own immaturity。 I forget to mention that in the meantime, we have chapters for the dude on the beach。 That’s because they do not bear on the story, are not very interesting and do not really make sense。 The end is the part where the dystopian elements are introduced – all in one chapter – and massively disappoint by boiling down to an evil mastermind who wants to end the world。 。。。more

The main character's voice is so strong and the buildup to the final scenes where the reader finds out exactly what happened to bring about the end of the of world。 **SPOILER ALERT** But did anyone else feel a little let down by the fact it was a fairly stereotypical love triangle? I can see how it may be read as conveying the message that even the most brilliant minds are ruled by lust therefore Crake's plan to undo that through the Crakers was justified at least in his mind。。。Any other ideas? meu preferido da atwood até agora, uma mistura de pandemia, mudanças climáticas, ditadura, bioterrorismo。。。ou seja, pertinente e atual。

Oryx and Crake is a interesting experience。 In the beginning it feels like an eternity, but it is worth it when you get to the end。 I actually love the way the story works in two different ages, the Oryx plotline gets more and more shocking and revolting。

I was told to read these a long time ago and I finally finished the third book in this series but the world is really a long haul building idea that makes Kafka looks like it rushed its climax。 Cool world, but so slowwww and it does dystopia in a "beat the message over your head" with many aspects of the story which I don't enjoy。 I was told to read these a long time ago and I finally finished the third book in this series but the world is really a long haul building idea that makes Kafka looks like it rushed its climax。 Cool world, but so slowwww and it does dystopia in a "beat the message over your head" with many aspects of the story which I don't enjoy。 。。。more

My three words: relevant, hypnotic, character-centeredOryx and Crake is the first book in Margaret Atwood's science-fiction MaddAddam trilogy。 This installment centers on Jimmy, who is seemingly one of the last people on Earth after a tragic pandemic wiped out the majority of the population。 Through Jimmy's story we get a glimpse into life before the apocalypse and what what happened to cause such a catastrophe。First of all, Margaret Atwood is amazing at world-building and this is no exception。 My three words: relevant, hypnotic, character-centeredOryx and Crake is the first book in Margaret Atwood's science-fiction MaddAddam trilogy。 This installment centers on Jimmy, who is seemingly one of the last people on Earth after a tragic pandemic wiped out the majority of the population。 Through Jimmy's story we get a glimpse into life before the apocalypse and what what happened to cause such a catastrophe。First of all, Margaret Atwood is amazing at world-building and this is no exception。 The majority of the novel you are flashing back and forth between Jimmy's life currently and the events leading up to the end of the world。 It takes awhile to see the cause of the pandemic come to light, but it is worth it to get to know Jimmy and his two closest friends, Oryx and Crake。 Because it takes so much time to build to the catastrophe, we get a deep understanding of the warning signs and consequences of a global tragedy。Something else Atwood does well is prophesy。 As in The Handmaid's Tale, there are elements of this story that seem ridiculous at first。 However if this past four years has taught us anything it's that our world is closer to Gilead than we'd like。 "Oryx and Crake" is no exception。 Yes, we read about global pandemics in history class, but living through one the past year or so has definitely shown that Atwood is nothing if not savvy in the way she is able to take a seemingly outlandish possibility and relate it to our current circumstances。 Although the MaddAddam trilogy was written some time ago, it is definitely relevant to our current global state。I highly recommend this for fans of dystopian science fiction。 It's not supernatural in nature, so even if you're not used to reading this type of thing then it would be accessible。 I can't wait to read the rest of the series and learn more about our world along the way。 。。。more

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the mind that invented Gilead also invented wolvogs and pigoons。 I am convinced Atwood must dream exclusively in nightmare。 I loved this one because as is Atwoods style she switches between flashbacks and present time。 Giving just enough details and character development without actually revealing the overall plot until the very end。 She is a brilliant story teller and I don't think anyone needs me to tell them that。I am looking forward to the next 2 install I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the mind that invented Gilead also invented wolvogs and pigoons。 I am convinced Atwood must dream exclusively in nightmare。 I loved this one because as is Atwoods style she switches between flashbacks and present time。 Giving just enough details and character development without actually revealing the overall plot until the very end。 She is a brilliant story teller and I don't think anyone needs me to tell them that。I am looking forward to the next 2 installments in the trilogy! 。。。more

4。75, rounding up。 I wish I knew more about Oryx’s motivations, and how much she knew。 It could’ve been less vulgar, but hey, it’s post-apocalyptic。 I usually hate books that alternate between the present and extensive flashbacks, but Margaret Atwood pulls a Tim Gunn with it。 This book is gripping, thought-provoking, and crawling with interesting characters。 I’m excited that there are sequels!

3。5 star round up。 Timing of the reading is important to one's view about a book。 Had I read Oryx and Crake 18 years ago when it first came out, it would have blown away my mind。 In Atwood's world, the apocalypse is brought to you by greedy humans through climate change and genetic engineering, especially the latter。 The author's vision of genetic engineering including human embryonic experiments is wild and wildly nightmarish。 In reality, the consequence of climate change is far more imminent t 3。5 star round up。 Timing of the reading is important to one's view about a book。 Had I read Oryx and Crake 18 years ago when it first came out, it would have blown away my mind。 In Atwood's world, the apocalypse is brought to you by greedy humans through climate change and genetic engineering, especially the latter。 The author's vision of genetic engineering including human embryonic experiments is wild and wildly nightmarish。 In reality, the consequence of climate change is far more imminent than genetic engineering。 Our society is likely to be altered by climate change long before the kind of gene weapons and designer babies Atwood dreamed of。My biggest problem about the book is the characters。 Except Snowman, everyone else is one dimensional。 Crake is a stereotypical evil genius。 Oryx is somewhat a pure hearted sex slave who does not think she is a sex slave。 By the way, she is an Asian female! Another potentially interesting female character, Snowman's mother, is not explored。I still want to read the rest of the trilogy。 。。。more

I have mixed feelings about this book。 From the dystopian, apocalyptic, post-covid perspective, I very much enjoyed it。 Enough that I will probably continue the trilogy。 There is a lot that happens that let's the reader question our own reality and circumstances and begs the question, does life imitate art or art imitate life?
