Summary

Touraine is a soldier。 Stolen as a child and raised to kill and die for the empire, her only loyalty is to her fellow conscripts。 But now, her company has been sent back to her homeland to stop a rebellion, and the ties of blood may be stronger than she thought。

Luca needs a turncoat。 Someone desperate enough to tiptoe the bayonet's edge between treason and orders。 Someone who can sway the rebels toward peace, while Luca focuses on what really matters: getting her uncle off her throne。

Through assassinations and massacres, in bedrooms and war rooms, Touraine and Luca will haggle over the price of a nation。 But some things aren't for sale。

Hmm, this is…a hard book to review, to be perfectly honest。THE UNBROKEN is about empire and oppression, and does not flinch away from the implications of that。 It follows Touraine, a conscripted soldier, returning to her homeland for the first time since she was taken as a child。 After saving the life of the empire’s princess, she is brought into a situation where she must reckon with herself and her history, caught between empire and her own people。I think that THE UNBROKEN is a really well-cra Hmm, this is…a hard book to review, to be perfectly honest。THE UNBROKEN is about empire and oppression, and does not flinch away from the implications of that。 It follows Touraine, a conscripted soldier, returning to her homeland for the first time since she was taken as a child。 After saving the life of the empire’s princess, she is brought into a situation where she must reckon with herself and her history, caught between empire and her own people。I think that THE UNBROKEN is a really well-crafted novel, and one that provokes a lot of thought and a lot of connection。 It’s definitely a book whose plot and characters are going to stay with me for a long time, and one that I look forward to returning to in order to chew on it。At the same time, though, the primary emotion I had while reading this book was frustration。 Which I think is intentional! The choices that the characters make and the way in which it veers from well-meaning people attempting to fix things to those same people scrambling and making things worse - it’s compelling in the way Shakespearan tragedies are compelling, but it’s also madness-inducing。For the most part, I think this works。 It definitely brings to attention the difficult position the characters, Touraine in particular, find themselves in, and how all choices can seem like bad choices when you and your people have been oppressed on such a scale。 Even when her choices didn’t make complete sense, I could empathize with where she was coming from to some degree。The one thing I do wish had been a little more developed was the relationship between Touraine and the princess, Luca。 Not from a shipping point of view, I realize that’s not the point, just from a character development point of view。 I felt like the story was trying to sell me on a connection between them that I…didn’t quite see, and didn’t quite buy。Regardless, I’m interested to see where the story goes from this point on! 。。。more

Sadly I have to dnf this one。 I’m about halfway through but it has been such a drag for me, I feel like I’ve been reading it forever。 The setting and the themes are interesting but I’m not invested in the plot and not buying some of the character motivations, and was started to dread having to continue。 So I’m just going to call it a day。

4。5 🌟This lived up to all the hype, plus some。 I love fantasy novels that have characters who make bad choices in order to put their interests first。 I think it’s pretty realistic lol! The culture and world building in this story was so unbelievably good。 I actually felt fully immersed in this world from the very start of the book。

This is a big book - it crams a lot of story, a lot of history, a lot of character development into some breakneck pacing。 I admit, sometimes it was a little too much, too fast for me - I longed to linger over some of the amazing shifts and set-pieces this book holds。 But the author pulls it off and this is a solid politico-adventure-fantasy with an utterly unflinching hold on the bitter complexities of colonialism。 Touraine is amazing, Luca is not getting easy answers, and I cannot wait to see This is a big book - it crams a lot of story, a lot of history, a lot of character development into some breakneck pacing。 I admit, sometimes it was a little too much, too fast for me - I longed to linger over some of the amazing shifts and set-pieces this book holds。 But the author pulls it off and this is a solid politico-adventure-fantasy with an utterly unflinching hold on the bitter complexities of colonialism。 Touraine is amazing, Luca is not getting easy answers, and I cannot wait to see what comes next in this series。 。。。more

4⭐️ read。 Thank you to Orbit Books, C。L。 Clark and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC。 Overall, I enjoyed this story very much。 The stunning descriptions of Qazal drew me in to the story; the differences between Old Medina and New Medina were so stark。 The dehumanizing treatment of the Qazalis by the Balladarians was so heartbreaking; the dismissal of them as “dogs” was unimaginable。 I felt for the “Sands” who were conscripted to fight for a people and army who didn’t value them。The 4⭐️ read。 Thank you to Orbit Books, C。L。 Clark and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC。 Overall, I enjoyed this story very much。 The stunning descriptions of Qazal drew me in to the story; the differences between Old Medina and New Medina were so stark。 The dehumanizing treatment of the Qazalis by the Balladarians was so heartbreaking; the dismissal of them as “dogs” was unimaginable。 I felt for the “Sands” who were conscripted to fight for a people and army who didn’t value them。The character development of Touraine and Luca really made me invested and I truly rooted for both of them to succeed。 Both Touraine and Luca were incredibly flawed and made the most frustrating decisions ever, in the name of fighting for their people and the throne, respectively。 I also mourned for the deaths of some of the characters and hated that others weren’t appropriately punished, even though a couple were vanquished in the end。 I did find that I struggled through the first third of the book; other than the first few pages, the action was quite slow, even though it was heavy on character development。 Once I passed that mark, I flew through the rest of the book in a few days。 I can’t wait to see what unfolds in Book two。 。。。more

3。5 stars。I finished! Wow this took a long time, I don't even know why since it's not that long for a high fantasy (under 500 pages! That's kind of weird)。 Anyways, despite taking forever to finish it getting through didn't feel like a chore, it was genuinely entertaining。 But I have a few complaints, let me get them out of the way so I can talk about the things I did like。 Right, first is the prose。 It feels a little stilted and not very polished, there are SO MANY epithets and that's a huge pet peeve of mine。 Characters constantly refer to each other as "The soldier" "the woman" "the princess" "the conscript" and it was pretty tiring, just use the character's names I beg of you。 Also I didn't count how many times characters had "heat rush to their faces", but I'm sure the number is way too high。 Then there is Touraine, aka the reason why I don't rate this book 4 stars。 I just couldn't understand her character at all, the decisions she made through the story completely baffled me, and after the midway point she just。。。 stopped making decisions all together? She became a side character in her own story, tossed around by the most important players and serving as exposition。 I just don't get it。 We spend so much of her journey being told what her priorities are, but at the end of the book there is no trace of those things anymore, she becomes a sort of mindless character just pushing the plot forward without any sort of agency or nuance。 (view spoiler)[She messed up the peace treaty supposedly to protect the other Sands, yet after that whole debacle she joined the rebels in a fight that would put her directly against the Sands, helped them deliver a plague that affected mostly the soldiers (this wasn't said but I'm gonna imagine it affected some Sands too I mean not all of them could've had had the laughing pox, Touraine herself didn't have it)。。。 So。。。。 What? I liked the idea of her being this rogue that didn't care about rebellion or empire, just her people, but that sort of disappeared in favor of the rebellion。 (hide spoiler)]I really wish the book had had a different main character。 We have so much more interesting people on the rebel's side that it would've enriched the story so much if we'd focused on them。 Jaghotai。 Djasha。 Aranen。 They were all so much more interesting and nuanced, and I think having their POVs would've been fantastic。 I understand Touraine's story is important to tell, a person trapped between two different worlds and wanting so desperately to belong while not being deemed enough, but the execution of her journey sort of falls apart after the middle of the book, or at least that's what I felt。 Not only that, but I feel like I was spoon-fed her arc over and over again at the beginning of the story。 We were told over and over and over again what she wanted to do, what she thought, and it was clear where she was going。 There wasn't a lot of nuance here, unfortunately。 When it comes to story I have little gripes, except for the ending。 It felt kinda rushed? Not set up properly? I liked the outcome, sure, but felt like we missed some of the journey to get there。 But then there's the rest of the book, which is pretty good。 This is a complex story, difficult to execute well and while it did have a couple hiccups I overall enjoyed what C。 L。 Clark told here。Stories tackling colonization are difficult for me to read, coming from a country whose culture was completely erased by a colonizing nation。 I was told in school to be grateful it'd happened, that they'd saved us, that we were uncivilized and they brought order and progress to us。 So The Unbroken felt pretty familiar, almost personal。 I like how the conflicts were presented and how thoughtfully they were tackled。 It was frustrating and painful and real。 Other than the story, the rest of the cast was pretty good as well。 Despite my intrinsic aversion to anything that has to do with the empire, Luca was my favorite character here。 She frustrated me, too, but not because I found her a messily-written character like Touraine, but because she was very well-done and I just didn't agree with her opinions (well。。。 Obviously)。 But I liked that while Luca was humanized (though her flaws were never downplayed, which was awesome) her whole empire, and the atrocities they were committing, never was。 I enjoy well-written characters even if I don't agree with them, sometimes especially if I don't agree with them, so it was no surprise that pretty early on I took to caring about Luca。 I was genuinely interested in seeing where she was gonna go, and all the decisions she made were set up perfectly by Clark, she was a character that, at least to me, simply worked。 Yes sure she's a colonizer, royalist, imperialist, whatever else。 She's pretty terrible actually, and I don't sympathize with her struggles, but I appreciate the role she plays in the story。 And, once again, the narrative never paints Luca as this sort of savior but shows her at her lowest multiple times, this gives her room to fail and to showcases her faults, and we get to see her evolve and fight in a really satisfying way。 I don't really understand the romance, nor do I like it, so I'm glad it's such a little part of the story。 The other characters were pretty great。 Djasha and Aranen in particular being standouts, they stole every scene they were in even when their page-time was so scarce。 Overall The Unbroken is a good book, I loved the slow setup in the first half and the quick, punchy pacing towards the end。 I think some of the action scenes could've used a little work but it's far from terrible。 I'd say, however, that if you like faster fantasy then perhaps this is not for you。 There's action, yes, but not a lot and this is more an introspective and thought-provoking story。 There are some infodumps at the start, but they're brief and clean, and then Clark just sorts of throws you into the world and expects you to figure it out。 That's okay with me, the worldbuilding is actually pretty rich and done well enough I didn't have any trouble following it, but if that's not your thing then it's something to keep in mind。But if you like stories like The Traitor Baru Cormorant then this is pretty similar in tone and theme, just with a smaller scope。But hey, I had a good time, I almost rate it four stars, and I'll probably check out book 2。 。。。more

This is definitely one of the most painful books I’ve ever read… and by this, I mean that it’s not a happy book。 The main theme is around colonialism and rebellion and wow, … just wow。It did take me a while to read … the start is quite slow but the story is a difficult one - world-building whilst exploring themes and lessons taken from history。 I actually found the title quite ironic because I think this book has broken me …

I still have no idea how it works, it just seems some random shit thrown around to act as deus et machina when needed。 。。。more
