Summary

Leaves of Grass is Walt Whitman’s glorious poetry collection, first published in 1855, which he revised and expanded throughout his lifetime。 It was ground-breaking in its subject matter and in its direct, unembellished style。

Part of the Macmillan Collector’s Library; a series of stunning, clothbound, pocket sized classics with gold foiled edges and ribbon markers。 These beautiful books make perfect gifts or a treat for any book lover。 This edition is edited and introduced by Professor Bridget Bennett。

Whitman wrote about the United States and its people, its revolutionary spirit and about democracy。 He wrote openly about the body and about desire in a way that completely broke with convention and which paved the way for a completely new kind of poetry。 This new collection is taken from the final version, the Deathbed edition, and it includes his most famous poems such as ‘Song of Myself’ and ‘I Sing the Body Electric’。

A tiny book that has been sitting beautifully on my shelf since summer, on a whim, and with total disregard of the books that I planned to read this month, I picked it up。 I don’t think there was a single moment when I regretted it。 Although I did not care for all of the poems, which is only to be expected, of course, the majority of this collection stole my heart, and I was high on the beauty of the language for the rest of the day。 ✨The way he wrote about nature, and humanity’s role in it, and A tiny book that has been sitting beautifully on my shelf since summer, on a whim, and with total disregard of the books that I planned to read this month, I picked it up。 I don’t think there was a single moment when I regretted it。 Although I did not care for all of the poems, which is only to be expected, of course, the majority of this collection stole my heart, and I was high on the beauty of the language for the rest of the day。 ✨The way he wrote about nature, and humanity’s role in it, and the way his words flowed, seemed to follow the rules of another universe。 You were hooked into his sentences; greenery, rivers, the smell of the outdoors, every aspect played before your eyes, you would become absorbed by his writing, and it would come as a shock, a stumble, to see his poem finish and another begin。 Song of Myself。。。 I could talk about it forever, after reading this poem, I don’t think anyone can forget the feeling that arises from it。 ✨My favourite from this collection were, along with the aforementioned: I Sing the Body Electric, We Two Boys together Clinging, When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer, The Artilleryman’s Vision, As I Lat with My Head in Your Lap Camerado, Spirit whose work is done, The City Dead-House, The Sleepers and A Noiseless Patient Spider。 ✨The rest fell a little flat, but even so, some separate phrases were definitely note worthy。 Overall a collection worth reading, perhaps you will, like me, discover some new favourites。 I’d like to conclude this brief review with some quotes from this work。 Four stars, hence four quotes:。📖“Old age superbly rising! O welcome, ineffable grace of dying days!”📖”And as to you Death, and you bitter hug of mortality, it is idle to try to alarm me。”📖”As if any man really knew aught of my life, Why even I myself I often think know little or nothing of my real life”📖”Have you no thought O dreamer that it may be all maya, illusion?” 。。。more

With an open and fluid expression of the human experience, Whitman gives his audience the chance to transcend the restrictive realities of everyday life。
