Summary

Poe Dameron has always wanted to fly。 His mother, Shara Bey, who was an A-wing pilot for the Rebellion against the Empire, was more than happy to show her son everything she knew about flying。 But she died an untimely death, and Poe was left alone with his father, Kes Dameron, who struggles with grief and a desire to keep his son safe。

Now sixteen, Poe wants nothing more than to leave his home on the quiet moon Yavin 4 to find adventure in the wider galaxy, while his father wants nothing more than for him to stay put。 So when a group of smugglers offers Poe a job piloting them off-world, it feels like an opportunity he can't refuse。 And by the time he finds out the smugglers are actually part of the fearsome criminal enterprise called the Spice Runners of Kijimi, Poe is already in deep。 His burgeoning friendship—and perhaps more—with one young Spice Runner, Zorii, is even more incentive for Poe to stick around。 But is this the life he's meant to have Is it even the life he wants? With danger closing in, Poe will have to figure out where he stands—and what he stands for。

the best sequel trilogy character finally got his own book and all is right with the world 😌

Poe Dameron Free Fall is a decent book。 Poe sounded more like he does in the films than a teenage Poe which isn’t a huge deal。 I enjoyed the references to the Poe Dameron comics。 I recommend Free Fall on the basis that it adds to Poe’s backstory as do the comics。 I hope Segura writes more Star Wars。

I was surprisingly pleased by this entry into Canon。 It added depth to Poe's character and explained his motivations in the Sequel trilogy。 It was also enjoyable to discover more of the seedy underground of the Outer Rim territories in the Post-ROTJ New Republic, something we get Inklings of in the Mandolorian but this book added some scope。 On top of that Star Wars continues its tradition of creating YA entries that don't feel like YA entries at the end of the day。 Really the only thing young a I was surprisingly pleased by this entry into Canon。 It added depth to Poe's character and explained his motivations in the Sequel trilogy。 It was also enjoyable to discover more of the seedy underground of the Outer Rim territories in the Post-ROTJ New Republic, something we get Inklings of in the Mandolorian but this book added some scope。 On top of that Star Wars continues its tradition of creating YA entries that don't feel like YA entries at the end of the day。 Really the only thing young about this novel is the age of the main characters but their experiences and the rest of the content is far from childish, at some moments it's quite gruesome and dark。 I'm going to say 4 stars for now but part of means leans to 4。5。 。。。more

A solid young adult novel detailing Poe's experiences as a spice runner alluded to in _Rise of Skywalker_。 Segura does a good job characterizing young Poe and explaining the decisions that seem very out of character for the adult version。 A solid young adult novel detailing Poe's experiences as a spice runner alluded to in _Rise of Skywalker_。 Segura does a good job characterizing young Poe and explaining the decisions that seem very out of character for the adult version。 。。。more

DNF。 this was so badly written and also doesn't click with poe's story at all。 all disney did is pushing a stereotype on him。 i was really excited at first but it died so quickly。 TROS already made nonsense about poe and this book continued it。 DNF。 this was so badly written and also doesn't click with poe's story at all。 all disney did is pushing a stereotype on him。 i was really excited at first but it died so quickly。 TROS already made nonsense about poe and this book continued it。 。。。more

Another Poe Dameron hatchet job。 This time it's teen rebelliousness that leads him to his (blessedly short) career as a spice runner, thug, and murder accomplice! If you are a fan of Poe Dameron and the sequel trilogy, you will find this a pleasure to read。 It is fast paced, fun, and another wonderful Star Wars adventure that brings that galaxy far far away to new life in your mind。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I feel like this is a story I’ve read before only in a way that was done better。 Like honestly, there’s nothing new under the sun here AT ALL。 Your basic “grieving boy whose dad doesn’t understand him runs away from home, gets in over his head, and learns a Valuable Life Lesson”。 An old trope with nothing done to freshen it up。And then the characters。 Ugh。 At at no point does this main character feel like Poe Dameron just for starters。 And the rest of the characters are cardboard cliche tropes。 I feel like this is a story I’ve read before only in a way that was done better。 Like honestly, there’s nothing new under the sun here AT ALL。 Your basic “grieving boy whose dad doesn’t understand him runs away from home, gets in over his head, and learns a Valuable Life Lesson”。 An old trope with nothing done to freshen it up。And then the characters。 Ugh。 At at no point does this main character feel like Poe Dameron just for starters。 And the rest of the characters are cardboard cliche tropes。 The plot was repetitive, Poe keeps thinking “did I do the wrong thing” over and over and only finally comes to the conclusion “yes” at the very end。 Zorii gets more and more pissed off and her eyes flash with rage a freakish number of times。 Oh and as for tying into the movies, at the end of the book Poe realizes Zorii will never forgive him and will definitely kill him if she ever sees him again—which she very decidedly doesn’t do in the film, and even helps him out and gives him an optimistic little pep talk, even though she hates his idealistic optimism。 So。 Idk what the point of that was。 Sure, maybe she cooled off after like 20 years or however long, but then again she probably had to kill her mom over this so it seems pretty disjointed。And also like, all that and we don’t even find out how he goes home and then eventually joins the New Republic Navy??? Like the boy’s a known criminal now! How does he get that off his record enough to become a trusted pilot??? We don’t even get to see him reunite with Kes after all that??What a disaster of a book。 It’s just bad。 And Poe/Zorii has less chemistry in the entirety of their “relationship” than Finn and Poe had in a single scene so like, nice try Disney but I’m not buying itAnyway, 1 star because the cover is nice and I like the blue。 Wouldn’t recommend to anyone and will absolutely be ignoring this little tidbit of “canon”。 。。。more

This is a book aimed at the younger audience。 In this one we see a young Poe Dameron and his days as a spice runner which we learned a little about in the movie The Rise of Skywalker。 This is basically the origin story of this character。I did not like this book but I have to admit I am not a fan of this character。 The book Resistance Reborn swayed me a little bit and I was hoping this would add to it and help me like the character。 It didn't。 The problem was not the characterization of the chara This is a book aimed at the younger audience。 In this one we see a young Poe Dameron and his days as a spice runner which we learned a little about in the movie The Rise of Skywalker。 This is basically the origin story of this character。I did not like this book but I have to admit I am not a fan of this character。 The book Resistance Reborn swayed me a little bit and I was hoping this would add to it and help me like the character。 It didn't。 The problem was not the characterization of the character。 We can see the brash, impulsive behavior that we do see in the movies。 That was the only thing that I liked about this book。 The story itself was okay and doesn't deserve my harsh rating。 The problem was how it was written。 It was bland and I could care less about any of the characters。 There was no heart or emotion。 That wasn't even the worst offense。 Every time we came to a momentous confrontation the author would do a time jump and we would have to infer how this confrontation played out by the characters in the next scene。 I don't even understand this way of storytelling。 It was like watching a television program and stuff happened during the commercials offscreen。 The worst example of this way of telling a story was the finale between two supporting characters。 I have no idea how it ended even though I am done with the book。 Am I suppose to guess?I didn't know when I started reading this book that I was actually reading a fill in the blanks book。 Granted, I don't want every little minute detail painted for me。 To leave out conclusions of what should have been exciting scenes is just weird and disorientating。 This book made me hate the character even more now when I see him in the movies。 I guess that won't be a problem because it isn't like I would rewatch those movies。 。。。more

As the book is centred around one of my favourite characters, I was a little let down by this。 It wasn't bad in the slightest, just very much middle of the road。I do feel the fact we already know how it is finish, make the stakes so much less, and there wasn't anything really all that surprising。I do believe there are instances where things are done for shock, of the way certain events transpire are weird and confusing。 Not good, but not bad。 As the book is centred around one of my favourite characters, I was a little let down by this。 It wasn't bad in the slightest, just very much middle of the road。I do feel the fact we already know how it is finish, make the stakes so much less, and there wasn't anything really all that surprising。I do believe there are instances where things are done for shock, of the way certain events transpire are weird and confusing。 Not good, but not bad。 。。。more

3。5 Stars This was a really good origin story for Poe Dameron。 A setup for his character in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker。 In this story you see the building blocks or a hero。 He has made a number if mistakes, but he has a true heart。

Author Alex Segura fills in a gap left by The Rise of Skywalker as he takes the reader on a deep dive into Poe Dameron’s time as a Spice Runner of Kijimi。Missing his mother after her death and alienated from his father through grief Poe wants nothing more than to leave his home planet of Yavin 4 and explore the galaxy, testing his piloting skills along the way。 He gets his chance after an encounter with a mysterious woman named Zorii Wynn。 Free Fall charts Poe’s time in the underworld of the Sta Author Alex Segura fills in a gap left by The Rise of Skywalker as he takes the reader on a deep dive into Poe Dameron’s time as a Spice Runner of Kijimi。Missing his mother after her death and alienated from his father through grief Poe wants nothing more than to leave his home planet of Yavin 4 and explore the galaxy, testing his piloting skills along the way。 He gets his chance after an encounter with a mysterious woman named Zorii Wynn。 Free Fall charts Poe’s time in the underworld of the Star Wars galaxy that is hinted at in episode nine and it is an illuminating insight into the origins of the character as well as providing more depth to some of the fringe characters in the film, namely Zorii Bliss and Babu Frik。 Segura weaves together a simplistic tale of adventure, criminality and consequence and does so through the lens of youth and friendship。 With the book aimed at young adults some of the themes only hit surface level and interesting ideas like Poe’s inner turmoil and the weight of his choices could have been mined for better depth。 Despite this the feeling of Poe’s helplessness shines though the book and Segura makes it clear why Poe makes the choices he does without sacrificing what we already know about him from the films。 The best part of the book was the growing relationship between Poe and Zorii。 Two people from opposite ends of society who grow to care for each other, but each have their own ideals that they are not willing to compromise。 It creates a nice tension between their interactions and a sense of inevitability hangs over their time together。 The action is beautifully detailed and immersive especially as the story heads towards its conclusion and there are a few entertaining side characters that get decent arcs。 However, outside of Poe’s story there are several plot points that feel underserved or unresolved which left me with questions after the story was over and a more detailed conclusion would have served the ending better, unless of course there is a sequel planned to address this。 Free Fall is not a must-read Star Wars novel, but it is a fine adventure for Poe Dameron, it is easy to read and is an enjoyable story that you can get lost in。 It provides some knowing nods to the Rise of Skywalker which will make re-watches of that film more enjoyable and perhaps most importantly it is a fun ride in the Star Wars universe。 If you have some time on your hands, maybe check it out。 。。。more

As a book/story, it's pretty good, and a nice coming-of-age story in the Star Wars Universe。 As a part of the SW canon, it's bad and retcons a huge part of Poe's backstory just to justify Episode 9。 As a book/story, it's pretty good, and a nice coming-of-age story in the Star Wars Universe。 As a part of the SW canon, it's bad and retcons a huge part of Poe's backstory just to justify Episode 9。 。。。more

This arc is the key factor in my recommending this book to others。 The themes of self-discovery, the importance of family and honor, and healthy romantic relationships are the main pillars of this novel。 What makes it different, though, is that we already know the final product of who Poe Dameron becomes—a hero, but not without his own faults。 Overall, Star Wars: Poe Dameron Free Fall gives the reader the roadmap for how a young Poe became one and doesn’t shy away from his mistakes and the consequences that come with it, and inspiration that led him to become the Cool Resistance Star-fighter Pilot we see in the new Movies。 。。。more

Despite what I thought I was going to feel about this book and all the reviews I read, I REALLY enjoyed this book。 It was super fun to read and I felt like I was in the universe through Poe and Zoriis minds。 I wish there was more character development。 Due to there being a handful of characters the character development was a little bit flat。 But the pacing was great。 The ending was both sad and heartwarming。 Give it a read for yourself and form your own opinion。

For being the Spice Runners if Kijimi, I don't seem to recall any scene in which they actually run Spice。 Despite nearly every plot twist being predictable, Free Fall isn't a bad book even if it feels familiar to the beats of Solo: A Star Wars Story。 For having to handle a weird character development in TROS, Segura does well enough to make it an entertaining book that shows up, does the job, and leaves without remark。 A good book to read if you're between outings but I wouldn't put it too high For being the Spice Runners if Kijimi, I don't seem to recall any scene in which they actually run Spice。 Despite nearly every plot twist being predictable, Free Fall isn't a bad book even if it feels familiar to the beats of Solo: A Star Wars Story。 For having to handle a weird character development in TROS, Segura does well enough to make it an entertaining book that shows up, does the job, and leaves without remark。 A good book to read if you're between outings but I wouldn't put it too high on your to-do list otherwise。 3 1/2 Camtonos of Spice 。。。more

A light and fun read that’s not jam packed with Easter eggs like other SW books based on film characters, which is nice, because it gives the author more room to develop Poe and Zorii’s relationship and their individual stories。
