Summary

Her vengeance。 His vision。

Ari lost everything she once loved when the Five Guilds’ resistance fell to the Dragon King。 Now, she uses her unparalleled gift for clockwork machinery in tandem with notoriously unscrupulous morals to contribute to a thriving underground organ market。 There isn’t a place on Loom that is secure from the engineer turned thief, and her magical talents are sold to the highest bidder as long as the job defies their Dragon oppressors。

Cvareh would do anything to see his sister usurp the Dragon King and sit on the throne。 His family’s house has endured the shame of being the lowest rung in the Dragons’ society for far too long。 The Alchemist Guild, down on Loom, may just hold the key to putting his kin in power, if Cvareh can get to them before the Dragon King’s assassins。

When Ari stumbles upon a wounded Cvareh, she sees an opportunity to slaughter an enemy and make a profit off his corpse。 But the Dragon sees an opportunity to navigate Loom with the best person to get him where he wants to go。

He offers her the one thing Ari can’t refuse: A wish of her greatest desire, if she brings him to the Alchemists of Loom

I've been dying to read Elise Kova's books for years and I'm so glad this was my first pick by her。 The Alchemists of Loom is so richly detailed and delightfully complex from the fantastic world to the dynamic characters。 Honestly, I was kind of worried in the beginning that this would be slow and boring, but I'm happy to report that I was dead wrong。 The Alchemists of Loom is action packed and fast paced right from the first chapter。 I'm not sure where I got my preconceived notions from but I'm I've been dying to read Elise Kova's books for years and I'm so glad this was my first pick by her。 The Alchemists of Loom is so richly detailed and delightfully complex from the fantastic world to the dynamic characters。 Honestly, I was kind of worried in the beginning that this would be slow and boring, but I'm happy to report that I was dead wrong。 The Alchemists of Loom is action packed and fast paced right from the first chapter。 I'm not sure where I got my preconceived notions from but I'm just thrilled I was wrong。 The worlds of Nova and Loom are so interesting。 Kova does an amazing job at world building; I never had a hard time believing how the magic system or political system worked for example。 I will admit, there is a lot of information to take in, especially in the beginning, so I found myself easily confused。 However, the intrigue outweighed the confusion for me。 I found the dynamics between the Fenthri and the Dragons to be so fascinating。 I wish more of that was explored in this one, but I'm sure it will come up in the next two books。I wish we had gotten more from the characters as well。 Mostly because I didn't completely buy the growing attraction between Cvareh and Ari。 It felt forced to me, to be honest。 If anything I thought Florence and Ari had more chemistry than anything。 I also feel like Kova was holding back with the characters。 I don't know how to describe it but it just felt like the author played it safe a lot of the time。 From how some of the characters were described I expected a lot more from them, if that makes sense。 If you have an opportunity to listen to the audiobook, do it。 I swear this book played out like a movie in my head because of that。 Everything was so well described that I didn't have trouble picturing everything。 。。。more

Made an account just to review this book lol。 I have never heard anyone talk about this book and I cannot figure out why。 Amazing world building that was not an unreadable info dump。 Kicked off in the middle of action so you are never bored。 Found family。 Enemies to lovers (slowish burn)。 Actually loved the main two characters without finding them whiny/annoying at some point like most other books。 Well rounded characters that have more than one character trait。 Bloody, vicious, and awesome。 Fou Made an account just to review this book lol。 I have never heard anyone talk about this book and I cannot figure out why。 Amazing world building that was not an unreadable info dump。 Kicked off in the middle of action so you are never bored。 Found family。 Enemies to lovers (slowish burn)。 Actually loved the main two characters without finding them whiny/annoying at some point like most other books。 Well rounded characters that have more than one character trait。 Bloody, vicious, and awesome。 Found this book while perusing shelves at the library and I have not found a book that I devoured so quickly in a long time。 I was blown away with how quickly this book sucked me in and I could picture everything going on, without the initial confusion with the world, like most sci-fi books have。 I am very excited to find the next book in the series。 I noticed online that the author has other series that are YA that I think I'll check out as well。 Sadly, my library doesn't have them, so I'll have to find them elsewhere。 Regardless, I am definitely bookmarking this author because I became an instant fan。 Seriously just try to read the first chapter without getting sucked in。 I'll leave you with this: dragons, blood drinking, and magic/science。 。。。more

DNFIt’s my fault for not researching this book, I didn’t realize that it was steampunk。 If you like that genre, maybe you’ll like this book? It was so confusing to me though! First off, I couldn’t get a good mental image of what this place looked like, what time period it was in, etc。。 Then all these words like “revolver”, “rivet”, “fenthri”, etc。。 and when I saw a word I was familiar with (dragon) I was like “Oh! I know what that looks like!” But。。。 no I don’t。 A dragon is not a dragon I guess? Amazing characters! Great world building。It starts off a little slow, but steam rolls from then on! I loved seeing the characters interact with each other, and seeing their personality s grow。 The plot thickens and I can't wait to read the next book! Strange alliances。 Amazing characters! Another fine start to a fantasy trilogy。 I particularly like the ebb and flow of attraction between Ari and Cvareh as the story moves on。 I'm already waiting for the other two books to arrive at my library so I can sit on my deck and get completely lost in the remainder of the story。 Another fine start to a fantasy trilogy。 I particularly like the ebb and flow of attraction between Ari and Cvareh as the story moves on。 I'm already waiting for the other two books to arrive at my library so I can sit on my deck and get completely lost in the remainder of the story。 。。。more

You know, I wasn’t really sure how well I was going to like this book going into it。 The concept just didn’t seem up my alley。 But I’ll admit, I liked it better than I thought it would。 It was a little bit difficult to get into interest wise, but once I did it was worth it。 The characters’ mysterious backgrounds had me flipping the pages, the world was intricate and new, and the character bonds were genuine。

I really enjoyed listening to this one on audio。 I was wavering between a 4 and 4。5。 I'm not sure if I would have rated this as highly if I had actually read it as opposed to listening。 There were parts in the early middle that seemed to drag。 The first half of the book hovered around 3 stars for me but the second half was a solid 5。 I fell in love with Florence immediately。 She was the most endearing character。 I liked her spunk and I appreciated her ability to keep Ari in check。 I want more Ar I really enjoyed listening to this one on audio。 I was wavering between a 4 and 4。5。 I'm not sure if I would have rated this as highly if I had actually read it as opposed to listening。 There were parts in the early middle that seemed to drag。 The first half of the book hovered around 3 stars for me but the second half was a solid 5。 I fell in love with Florence immediately。 She was the most endearing character。 I liked her spunk and I appreciated her ability to keep Ari in check。 I want more Arianna and Cvareh moments。 I'm intrigued to see how things unfurl in book 2。 If you are looking for a well developed fantasy world, with slow burn romance, and hints of steampunk, I highly recommend this series。 。。。more

Impuslive main characters who claim to have a grand overarching plan but somehow can't stop themselves from attacking the second they're provoked。Disappointing side character (Florence) who is just there to be nice, be attacked, and to reveal important information to strangers。Romance coming from nowhere。 One moment they hate each other the next he's in love?I expected better from this author。 Impuslive main characters who claim to have a grand overarching plan but somehow can't stop themselves from attacking the second they're provoked。Disappointing side character (Florence) who is just there to be nice, be attacked, and to reveal important information to strangers。Romance coming from nowhere。 One moment they hate each other the next he's in love?I expected better from this author。 。。。more

Arianna has spent the last two years ridding the Loom of Dragons and Dragon influence。 Dragons being the ruling class of predators that dominate the Fenthri of the Loom。 She is a chimera, a magical blend of the two races that many deem unnatural and doomed to a cursed existence。 When she finds an injured Dragon, she agrees to aid him in finding the Alchemists in exchange for a boon。 In helping him, they both learn a lot about each other's worlds and how much different everything is than it seeme Arianna has spent the last two years ridding the Loom of Dragons and Dragon influence。 Dragons being the ruling class of predators that dominate the Fenthri of the Loom。 She is a chimera, a magical blend of the two races that many deem unnatural and doomed to a cursed existence。 When she finds an injured Dragon, she agrees to aid him in finding the Alchemists in exchange for a boon。 In helping him, they both learn a lot about each other's worlds and how much different everything is than it seemed。 It was slow-paced。 Too many changes in POVs for me to really fall in love with any of the characters。 I was struggling to find my rhythm with the book and somehow it was short but soooo long。 Arianna was frustratingly tight-lipped about everything and I wasn't seeing any justification for her mechanical prowess or for the emotional entanglements which were supposedly so intrinsic to her character。 The phrasing was repetitive, if I read "the woman I loved" one more time I was just going to DNF。 It was interesting enough for me to maybe pick up the next one just because it was so slow-burn。 I want to see the culmination of events but I don't know if I have the patience to read through it all。 I read Air Awakens a few years ago and thought it was a pretty good series and really liked her most recent standalone so I think it's somewhat due to me not being much of a steampunk fan。 I still like Elise Kova but I don't know if this series is for me。 This review and all my others can be found at: https://aworldshapedbybooks。blogspot。。。。 。。。more

LoomAn interesting book about magic and Dragons! Elise usually has a lot of characters that you follow and she does a fantastic job of keeping the different stories moving along to keep the pace going。 When one character ends on something exciting then the next character picks up and fills in the blanks that are easy to understand and continues the story。 It's impressive how she manages all the characters。 A nice blend of budding romance and action。 LoomAn interesting book about magic and Dragons! This felt pretty sci-fi at the start of the book, but more and more magical elements are introduced along the way。 It's not something I probably would have picked up on my own, but I gave it a chance after a friend recommended it, and I'll definitely be finishing the series。 This felt pretty sci-fi at the start of the book, but more and more magical elements are introduced along the way。 It's not something I probably would have picked up on my own, but I gave it a chance after a friend recommended it, and I'll definitely be finishing the series。 。。。more

3。5🌟Good points: Very entertaining。 The story moves along without a hitch。 The worldbuilding is very interesting。Not so good points: Nothing special about the writing style。 Characters can use some better (less cliché) development。I would recommend it if you need a quick and easy read。I'm probably going to check the rest of the series so I'll see then if it's worth picking up altogether。 3。5🌟Good points: Very entertaining。 The story moves along without a hitch。 The worldbuilding is very interesting。Not so good points: Nothing special about the writing style。 Characters can use some better (less cliché) development。I would recommend it if you need a quick and easy read。I'm probably going to check the rest of the series so I'll see then if it's worth picking up altogether。 。。。more

Elise Kova's Air Awakens series seems to be more popular, but I really prefer her Alchemists of Loom trilogy。 And given how dark and gritty this book is, and how much I usually don't prefer dark and gritty books, that's saying something。 This is a challenging read。 It's based on a world completely foreign to ours, where 35 years is considered a long life, families do not exist and everyone divides according to their work skill instead, so it takes a while to orient yourself and immerse into the Elise Kova's Air Awakens series seems to be more popular, but I really prefer her Alchemists of Loom trilogy。 And given how dark and gritty this book is, and how much I usually don't prefer dark and gritty books, that's saying something。 This is a challenging read。 It's based on a world completely foreign to ours, where 35 years is considered a long life, families do not exist and everyone divides according to their work skill instead, so it takes a while to orient yourself and immerse into the story。If you like lighthearted fantasy, stay away from this。 But if you don't mind a dark story that will leave you thinking about it after, this book is a great one。 。。。more

This was a real struggle。 DNF at 29%。There just lacked a freshness to this novel。 The characters I’ve seen before, the plot seemed overly formulaic, and the setting, whilst unique, wasn’t really fleshed out in any real way。 Nothing really latched onto my interests at all and picking this book up became a chore, which is my usual sign to DNF。Disappointing, considering I liked Kova’s Air Awakens series。

Well。。。 this was not the series I wanted to read from this author, but it was the only one my library had。 And being to afraid to just buy the book。。。I read this one。 And I'm glad I did。 I really enjoyed the authors writing and character development。 Granted she doesn't describe her characters in details so it's hard to imagine them。 I didn't know that Cvareh was blue with orange hair until around page 50。 And Florence had long black hair until about 100 pages。 That was only a minor annoyance。 I Well。。。 this was not the series I wanted to read from this author, but it was the only one my library had。 And being to afraid to just buy the book。。。I read this one。 And I'm glad I did。 I really enjoyed the authors writing and character development。 Granted she doesn't describe her characters in details so it's hard to imagine them。 I didn't know that Cvareh was blue with orange hair until around page 50。 And Florence had long black hair until about 100 pages。 That was only a minor annoyance。 It really was a good action pack fantasy that leaves you wanting more。 I'm looking forward to learning more about these characters and just what is going to happen to Loom。 。。。more

This was a decent book! 3。5 stars。 The world building was a bit more complicated which made the fluidity of it a bit jarring and lackluster。 But I will say, Kova knows how to build tension between characters。 And I absolutely started the second book as soon as I finished the first。

It took me a little bit to get into this, and I'm glad I stuck with it。 I really like the world and the tension between the characters。 I look forward to the next book, the story is interesting。 Though the end of the book is not the end of the story。 This definitely feels like a part 1, the book doesn't stand alone。 It took me a little bit to get into this, and I'm glad I stuck with it。 I really like the world and the tension between the characters。 I look forward to the next book, the story is interesting。 Though the end of the book is not the end of the story。 This definitely feels like a part 1, the book doesn't stand alone。 。。。more
