Summary

Bestselling adult author of The Bear and the Nightingale makes her middle grade debut with a creepy, spellbinding ghost story destined to become a classic。 Now in paperback。

After suffering a tragic loss, eleven-year-old Ollie who only finds solace in books discovers a chilling ghost story about a girl named Beth, the two brothers who loved her, and a peculiar deal made with "the smiling man"--a sinister specter who grants your most tightly held wish, but only for the ultimate price。
Captivated by the tale, Ollie begins to wonder if the smiling man might be real when she stumbles upon the graves of the very people she's been reading about on a school trip to a nearby farm。 Then, later, when her school bus breaks down on the ride home, the strange bus driver tells Ollie and her classmates: "Best get moving。 At nightfall they'll come for the rest of you。" Nightfall is, indeed, fast descending when Ollie's previously broken digital wristwatch begins a startling countdown and delivers a terrifying message: RUN。
Only Ollie and two of her classmates heed these warnings。 As the trio head out into the woods--bordered by a field of scarecrows that seem to be watching them--the bus driver has just one final piece of advice for Ollie and her friends: "Avoid large places。 Keep to small。"
And with that, a deliciously creepy and hair-raising adventure begins。

A mysterious book。A spooky field trip。Creepy, life-like scarecrows。And a boogeyman。This was a really good, middle grade ghost story。

I find it a bit slow at first and a little bit annoyed on the part where Brian was acting like a dope of not believing whatever weird things were happening among them at the forest but a story is a story as it always happens。 In general, it was just fine for me。 A fast pace story。 It reminds me of a bit of Coraline-ish concept from Neil Gaiman, Narnia series, Hansel & Gretel and others。

After a tragic loss a year back, books have become even more important for Ollie as she can barely bring herself to tolerate school and has no interest in any activities she used to be so fond of before。 Her dad is a warm, supportive person who bakes delicious treats, knits wonderful stuff and tells silly jokes to comfort her but it's hard。And then she comes across a weeping woman about to fling a book into a swimming hole! Instinctively, Ollie grabs the book and runs home to read it。 It tells a strange but fascinating tale of a farm and two brothers one of whom went missing until the other made a secret bargain to get him back。 Forced to stop reading and go on a field trip to a farm, Ollie is spooked to find similarities between the place and the farm in the book。 She doesn't think much of it until the bus breaks down on the way, their teacher goes for help and she feels a compelling force pushing her to run and 'avoid large spaces'。 This begins an adventure in which Ollie has to make use of all her wits and courage; one in which she comes to know the two classmates who run with her and also another very important truth。It is exciting and creepy; would be more so for the target audience。 It just moves at a really fast pace and combines humour and fantasy and imagination really well。 If you like taking nostalgic trips down memory lane through books, this one is for you。 。。。more

The beginning was intriguing, but it took a strange turn。 I’m just not a fan of fantasy/ ghost style stories。

This is an awesome book。 It’s like The Wizard of Oz meets Alice in Wonderland meets Something Wicked This Way。 I love the imagery。 Like I believe at one scene she used her heart beat hard as a rabbit’s in an open field。 Then in another she used something like it was dark as witch soul。 Then at another she described the air smelling like an ordinary fall。 This book was well written, and an amazing YA novel。

This book was not amazing。 It was a bit confusing at times and didn't have a super interesting plot。 Personally, I got scared a good amount by this book。 Worth reading if you like ghost stories。 If you read Small Spaces, definitely read Dead Voices, the sequel, which is better but considerably more terrifying。 This book was not amazing。 It was a bit confusing at times and didn't have a super interesting plot。 Personally, I got scared a good amount by this book。 Worth reading if you like ghost stories。 If you read Small Spaces, definitely read Dead Voices, the sequel, which is better but considerably more terrifying。 。。。more

There are two separate instances where Ollie recalls someone saying something they never said。 There's a random line where she tells Seth "You said you'd give me water" (pg 205) where the guy had never offered her water at any point in the book, but a different scene has a major plot point that she pulls out of thin air。 "[the ghost] said that the smiling man was in the center of the maze," she says to her companions (pg 182), which is what gets them to head for the center of the maze, but the g There are two separate instances where Ollie recalls someone saying something they never said。 There's a random line where she tells Seth "You said you'd give me water" (pg 205) where the guy had never offered her water at any point in the book, but a different scene has a major plot point that she pulls out of thin air。 "[the ghost] said that the smiling man was in the center of the maze," she says to her companions (pg 182), which is what gets them to head for the center of the maze, but the ghost in question only ever said a door was in the maze, before explaining what the scarecrows are and what they do for the smiling man (pg 171) -- never anything about the location of the smiling man himself。The idea sounded cool, and I am definitely far beyond the age range intended for the book, so I won't be nitpicky about the plot or characters; I was a little disappointed with it, but I know for a fact I would have been completely terrified as a child reading this, so bumped the rating up。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really enjoyed this story!! It took me awhile to get through just because I kept getting a bit annoyed with the middle grade writing style。 It was well written, just a few things that are common in middle grade that weren't my favorite as an older reader。 Anyway, there was PLENTY I really enjoyed! I absolutely loved Ollie as a character。 I can see people not liking her, or being annoyed by her, but I really found myself connecting to her and even kind of relating to her。 I loved the way grief I really enjoyed this story!! It took me awhile to get through just because I kept getting a bit annoyed with the middle grade writing style。 It was well written, just a few things that are common in middle grade that weren't my favorite as an older reader。 Anyway, there was PLENTY I really enjoyed! I absolutely loved Ollie as a character。 I can see people not liking her, or being annoyed by her, but I really found myself connecting to her and even kind of relating to her。 I loved the way grief was portrayed through her。 The way she shut out everyone, refused to talk about her feelings, refused any help and hated sympathy from people all made my heart ache for her and also made her such an interesting character。 I think kids going through similar things could find a lot of value in Ollie。 She shows that there are many ways of showing grief, and ultimately that its ok to feel difficult things, and that you shouldn't just shut the world out and forget to live。 The atmosphere was also incredible! I loved following the kids as they slowly figured things out, and I actually found parts of this book super creepy。 I loved the creativity of the "bad Narnia" and how Beth Webster's book played into what was actually going on。 The suspense and tension in parts of this book had me actually on edge。 I also loved the watch element- the way that Ollie's mom was with her and helping to guide her。 The part where Ollie asks if her mom is there with her and the watch says "always" had me close to tears。 I thought that was such a smart thing to include。 I also loved that there were real stakes here! If the kids failed, they would all become scarecrows and no one would ever know what happened to them。 That was one of the creepiest things in the book。 Ollie's dad was also an amazing character。 The way he handled his grief was really admirable。 He let Ollie have her own space to grieve, but still was concerned and wanted her to try and move on。 I loved that he was willing to show emotion。 I also loved the glimpses we get of Ollie's life- the Egg, her dad being an avid baker and crafter (something I basically never see from a father figure), the way her mom's survival skills and knowledge of nature instilled in Ollie helped her to navigate the terrifying situation。 I also loved Coco's character。 For a while I was kind of annoyed at just how much Ollie and Brian were constantly digging at Coco and being annoyed at literally everything she did, and never giving her a break even though she wasn't doing anything THAT bad or annoying。 Brian was also being so shitty and rude (and I get he was scared or whatever) for so much of this book。 I'm glad they moved on from that and their characters developed and there was sort of an apology from Ollie and Brian。 But I loved how Coco's character showed that it's not weak to be emotional, its not weak to cry, and that she ended up showing immense courage and strength and sacrifice for her friends。 I loved that she was a character that was fearful, and wore her emotions on her sleeve, and cried at the drop of a hat。 She was so real。 Another thing that was a little weird to me was that it's mentioned early on that Brian is black (lowercase B, which is。。。not great) and that this is "notable in small town Vermont。" Yet that is literally the last time in the entire book that it's mentioned。 Of course him being Black shouldn't be his whole character, it just seems odd that she would specifically mention that him being Black was notable and then never have that affect the way he's treated or how his character may see things differently from Coco or Ollie。 Also she mentions he's from Jamaica, which again I feel could have factored into the story more, but is never mentioned again。 Overall though I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I thought it was a great horror/mystery book for any age。 。。。more

3 stars If i was younger perhaps i would have liked it much more。 The writing style is good compared to the other middle grade books that i have read。 The plot is also very nice although I got a bit bored a little over the first several chapters, but i started to kind of get a bit interested again more than halfway through so that's okay。 3 stars If i was younger perhaps i would have liked it much more。 The writing style is good compared to the other middle grade books that i have read。 The plot is also very nice although I got a bit bored a little over the first several chapters, but i started to kind of get a bit interested again more than halfway through so that's okay。 。。。more

I absolutely loved the The Winternight Trilogy so I feel like I need to read this even though I rarely read Horror (I'm easily spooked, people 🙈)It's a quick read, and I enjoyed it overall。 I'm a huge fan of anything Katherine Arden writes at this point。 A bit slow in the beginning but then I couldn't put it down as soon as the bus broke down (I don't think this is a spoiler since it's in the blurb。) I was definitely spooked。 I could only imagine how much scary this would've been to 12-y/o me。 A I absolutely loved the The Winternight Trilogy so I feel like I need to read this even though I rarely read Horror (I'm easily spooked, people 🙈)It's a quick read, and I enjoyed it overall。 I'm a huge fan of anything Katherine Arden writes at this point。 A bit slow in the beginning but then I couldn't put it down as soon as the bus broke down (I don't think this is a spoiler since it's in the blurb。) I was definitely spooked。 I could only imagine how much scary this would've been to 12-y/o me。 And good thing I live in a city where there are no scarecrows lol。 。。。more

This book is AMAZING。 I read the first couple pages of the book and still wanted to read more, AND IT WASN'T EVEN THE GOOD PART。 This book will constantly leave you wondering about what the heck is going to happen next。 (I'm pretty sure that was one of the reviews on the book) Once I found out that this book had TWO other books, I went straight to my parents to ask for them。 Something about this book is so intriguing (I think that's how you spell it。。。) I just want to know how did Katherine star This book is AMAZING。 I read the first couple pages of the book and still wanted to read more, AND IT WASN'T EVEN THE GOOD PART。 This book will constantly leave you wondering about what the heck is going to happen next。 (I'm pretty sure that was one of the reviews on the book) Once I found out that this book had TWO other books, I went straight to my parents to ask for them。 Something about this book is so intriguing (I think that's how you spell it。。。) I just want to know how did Katherine start out with kids on a bus then right this?! It gave me major Stranger things vibes and I totally dig it!I don’t really tend to read middle grade book, but I really appreciated the story of Small spaces。 I like the fact that it didn’t feel childish。 Sure if you are looking for a really scary book, that’s not it, but it’s really a perfect spooky book to read at fall。I also loved the characters, they we’re all so lovely without being perfect and they were really smart (not like most middl Oh gosh that book was so fast paced and so addictive! i can almost see myself grabbing this book at a scholastic book fair in like 2009 or something and getting obsessed with it。 pretty spooky and atmospheric mostly。 however i almost preferred the like。。。 interpersonal moments between the main characters to the actual spooky stuff, which got old pretty fast。 found myself skimming near the end

This book has been on my radar for awhile and I decided to check it out。 I am so glad that I did because it was the perfect mix of spooky and atmospheric that I enjoy in books。 Ollie is a young girl who has been having a rough time and one day she stumbles across a woman at her hiding place。 The woman acts very mysteriously and is going to throw a book in the water。 Ollie cannot let that happen and instead ends up grabbing the book from her。 As she starts reading the book Ollie encounters spooky This book has been on my radar for awhile and I decided to check it out。 I am so glad that I did because it was the perfect mix of spooky and atmospheric that I enjoy in books。 Ollie is a young girl who has been having a rough time and one day she stumbles across a woman at her hiding place。 The woman acts very mysteriously and is going to throw a book in the water。 Ollie cannot let that happen and instead ends up grabbing the book from her。 As she starts reading the book Ollie encounters spooky characters and odd things being happening。 The reason it is not a five star read for me is because I felt the beginning was fantastic but the the second half wasn't quite as strong。 I do want to read the next book and I highly recommend this book。 It would be perfect for fall if you can hang out until then。 。。。more
