Summary

A diverse fantasy reimagining of Les Misérables and The Jungle Book

In the dark days following a failed French Revolution, in the violent jungle of an alternate 1828 Paris, young cat-burglar Eponine (Nina) Thenardier goes head to head with merciless royalty, and the lords of the city's criminal underworld to save the life of her adopted sister Cosette (Ettie)。

Her vow will take her from the city’s dark underbelly, through a dawning revolution, to the very heart of the glittering court of Louis XVII, where she must make an impossible choice between guild, blood, betrayal and war。

First of all I want to thank The Court of Miracles for bringing me out of a terrible reading slump! Either way, it was a fun and clever read that unfolds in a world in which the French Revolution had not happened。So, Nina's sister is sold by their father into slavery/prostitution, run by one of nine Guild Lords of The Miracle Court。 We follow Nina during her trials to get her sister back and what trials they are! Filled with mystery and assassins and thieves and ghosts, TCoM is a fast paced tale of - as the book rightly states on the front - liberty, family and treachery。I really liked Nina as a character。 Her dry humour and impatience with idiocy and frivolity of the French Court were all really fun to read。 Her encounters with the dauphin were really entertaining and while there was no full on romance in this one, the connections she does have, are all the more touching for it by the end。Goes without saying, but i recommend。 。。。more

I kindly received a copy of this book for review from NetGalley。The Court of Miracles was a captivating story set in the underground of Paris。 There are secret lords and guilds (sounds like a win already doesn't it?!) that train their members in various different skills e。g assassins, thieves etc。The story follows a member of the thieves guild who is trying to save her sister from a fate worse than death - being drugged to be used in the house of flesh。 So goes a quest to take down a guild。On th I kindly received a copy of this book for review from NetGalley。The Court of Miracles was a captivating story set in the underground of Paris。 There are secret lords and guilds (sounds like a win already doesn't it?!) that train their members in various different skills e。g assassins, thieves etc。The story follows a member of the thieves guild who is trying to save her sister from a fate worse than death - being drugged to be used in the house of flesh。 So goes a quest to take down a guild。On this quest we meet all kinds of interesting people and there is a real Les Mis vibe to the story。 The characters are interesting, well described and I was routing for them。 I'm hoping there's a sequel as I'd love to know what may happen to the queen of thieves。 。。。more

DNF @ about 60 pagesThis story just wasn't for me。 I didn't realize it would deal so heavily in child abuse, neglect, slavery, prostitution/rape, etc。 I mean, it covered just about every form of childhood trauma you could think of, and I want none of it。 I wish the story were different because I have two such beautiful editions of the book, but I found myself dreading to pick this up, so I knew it was time to quit。 DNF @ about 60 pagesThis story just wasn't for me。 I didn't realize it would deal so heavily in child abuse, neglect, slavery, prostitution/rape, etc。 I mean, it covered just about every form of childhood trauma you could think of, and I want none of it。 I wish the story were different because I have two such beautiful editions of the book, but I found myself dreading to pick this up, so I knew it was time to quit。 。。。more

The Court of Miracles is a debut novel by Kester Grant and the first book in a planned trilogy or quartet。 The novel draws inspiration from Les Misérables, The Jungle Book, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and Oliver Twist; all well-known and loved stories。I would like to disclose, while I am familiar with all inspirations for The Court of Miracles, I don’t know enough to draw the lines of similarities between the book and its inspiration except a few character names and a little of the history like the revolution/uprising against the nobility。 The Court of Miracles is centered on Nina, a skilled thief and the endurance and length she would go through for her sisters。 Grant was inspired by Eponine (Nina) and Cosette (Ettie)’s relationship from Les Misérables, or lack there of。 Questioning Hugo’s take of female action and friendships。 With that said, I think the inspiration definitely gave a hand to the framework of the novel but the characters and world building was wholly unique and original。The Court of Miracles is comprised of nine guilds, basically the underground network of the so-called deplorable of Paris。 Each Guild specializes in a type of profession。 Nina belongs to the Guild of Thieves and Ettie to the Guild of Beggars。 I found the world building fascinating。 Each guild had their own rules and codes to abide by but also rules to follow as a whole。 Readers were treated to a few of the inter-working of the main guilds。 I hope Grant goes more in depth with the guilds and explore the other guilds that were mentioned in the next books。I absolutely loved Nina。 She’s not only intelligent and a skilled thief but also a little firecracker, not afraid to make noise wherever she went。 While Nina is the main character, I must say the entire cast of characters were very well-developed, so richly detailed I can clearly picture everyone from Nina, Ettie, The Dauphin to Le Maire and Montparnasse。 I enjoyed the overall plot, but I think the characters truly make this book。 I liked and admired that all the characters were gray。 There was never a clear good versus bad or right and wrong。 Some of the so-called good guys did heinous things, some of the so-called bad guys did heroic things…everything dependent on one’ own beliefs。 I like my characters flawed, it more relatable and realistic。All in all, The Court of Miracles was a great start to what’s sure to be an incredible series。 I can easily say The Court of Miracles is one of the best novels I read so far this year and I am beyond excited that this book is a start of a series。 I can’t wait to immerse myself back into the world and with the characters… I kinda miss them already! I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a great plot or a highly character driven novel。 And although The Court of Miracles is inspired by big name titles, go in unattached knowing its a loose interpretation of them but expect to be wowed by Grant’s engrossing creative originality and storytelling。 。。。more

This is everything I want in a book。 Action packed and vivid, Kester Grant wove a story of historical fiction。 I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish and I can’t say that I found any of this to be lacking。 Yes, this is a YA, but it was great。

I was originally thinking of giving this 4 stars, but decided to give it 3。 It was a really good book, but what led me to 3 stars was that there were some confusing and/or boring parts of this story, that made it less enjoyable。 I feel like it also had some small plot holes, and the flow of the book was sort of off。 I was slightly confused, because the book suddenly jumped to multiple years later, without any real warning。 Even so, I really enjoyed the idea of this novel。 I found it very interes I was originally thinking of giving this 4 stars, but decided to give it 3。 It was a really good book, but what led me to 3 stars was that there were some confusing and/or boring parts of this story, that made it less enjoyable。 I feel like it also had some small plot holes, and the flow of the book was sort of off。 I was slightly confused, because the book suddenly jumped to multiple years later, without any real warning。 Even so, I really enjoyed the idea of this novel。 I found it very interesting that it was set right after the French Revolution, but in a slightly alternate universe, where 9 guilds were created instead。 (view spoiler)[I feel like the ending was pretty basic, and it felt like the end was sort of abrupt。 (hide spoiler)] Even so, I'm very curious to see what the next book is like。 This story could go in a lot of directions, and I'm excited about that。 Can't wait to read the next book! :) 。。。more

I’ll start off by saying that I loved this main character。 Nina is the very definition of a strong independent women。 She’s stubborn and sometimes quick to anger but she’s loyal and hyper focused。 I was not a fan of the romantic interest, it wasn’t very much and luckily didn’t feel like it got in the way of the plot but it felt less romantic and more as a light humor。 I wished we got a view of the miracle court from an outsider perspective and that we had a little more info on the courts, cause I’ll start off by saying that I loved this main character。 Nina is the very definition of a strong independent women。 She’s stubborn and sometimes quick to anger but she’s loyal and hyper focused。 I was not a fan of the romantic interest, it wasn’t very much and luckily didn’t feel like it got in the way of the plot but it felt less romantic and more as a light humor。 I wished we got a view of the miracle court from an outsider perspective and that we had a little more info on the courts, cause even with the one we should know about I felt we barely got a glimpse of it。 Unless there’s a sequel I also felt that there was a lot of loose ends that should of been tied up but were just left wondering about。 It was a good book though with an interesting world and characters I could enjoy learning more about。 。。。more

The author ruined the story by trying to make it too poetic and overloading it with longwinded metaphors。 There is also a strange obsession with Les Mis character names。 Probably should have expected as this is the advertisement line: ‘Les Misérables meets Six of Crows in this page-turning adventure’。Butttttttttt。。。 the book is slightly redeeming as the premise is exactly my kind of thing so I will definitely read the second one to see the dark themes develop。

I really enjoyed this one。 To me, the second half was definitely stronger; I sort of had to get through the first part to get to the good stuff。I love Nina and her friends, I especially love Montparnasse, please let that develop in book 2!The world building is a lot all at once, but as you go on, it becomes very easily understood。 The graphics and map at the beginning are very helpful。My only qualm is that all the time jumps are very vague。 I almost felt like I wanted every chapter to have a mon I really enjoyed this one。 To me, the second half was definitely stronger; I sort of had to get through the first part to get to the good stuff。I love Nina and her friends, I especially love Montparnasse, please let that develop in book 2!The world building is a lot all at once, but as you go on, it becomes very easily understood。 The graphics and map at the beginning are very helpful。My only qualm is that all the time jumps are very vague。 I almost felt like I wanted every chapter to have a month and year heading。 Sometimes I didn’t realize we had jumped in time, so I got quite confused。 But, that definitely didn’t ruin much。 I really enjoyed the blend of Jungle Book and Les Miz。 It’s definitely more of a Jungle Book retelling set in the world of Les Miz than a Les Miz retelling, but I really enjoyed how Grant wove it together。All in all, I’m super excited for book 2! 4 stars from me。 。。。more

DNF。 I love the cover of this book, I love the idea of this book。 I did not enjoy this book at all。 I got about halfway through before I just couldn't。 I've never really had a book actually put me in a slump half way through it。 I'll try and explain。The first few chapters of this book had me very confused。 It was written in a way that was kind of poetic but also not well done。 Things like random mentions of how the main character doesn't like water because "kittens hate water。" We don't find out DNF。 I love the cover of this book, I love the idea of this book。 I did not enjoy this book at all。 I got about halfway through before I just couldn't。 I've never really had a book actually put me in a slump half way through it。 I'll try and explain。The first few chapters of this book had me very confused。 It was written in a way that was kind of poetic but also not well done。 Things like random mentions of how the main character doesn't like water because "kittens hate water。" We don't find out the name of the main character for quite a few pages and it's a ton of chapters later that we even found out her age。 In the first few chapters I guessed she was around 8 or 9 based on how she acted/talked but come to find out I believe she was about 13。 Things like this just make it hard to care about the character when I feel like I don't know her。And the choices she makes are also pretty dumb。 There's time skips that seem to go over interesting sections to more boring sections, and the plot is。。。 well it doesn't really go anywhere until a quarter way through。 There isn't even really a glimpse of plot。 I love the ideas of this book I just couldn't stand writing it。 I found myself complaining about one thing or another every time I picked it up。 It could be I just wasn't in the mood for this type of book, maybe I'll give it another go one day, but for now, I've DNF'd it。 。。。more

God I need a good found family story and this did not disappoint。 I really loved all the French sayings, and the historical accuracy。 It was a quick read, and very fast paced so it wasn’t hard to get into。 I am in love with the love interest ( morally gray assassin anyone ) , but I just felt like their relationship could have been more prominent in the book。

I can't be bothered and I have too many books to get through to keep on with a book I'm meh about。 THIS IS SO SAD。 Maybe if I kept going I'd be rewarded with SOMETHING that makes sense or fits or feels right, but other than this being a visually SPECTACULAR book (both it's dust jacket and it's naked cover) I'm so let down。 。。。more

it’s very hard to describe my feelings for this book。 the only interesting thing here: the setting。 paris set in 1828, the political situation sets a promising background, but almost everything else failed in execution。 I found it picked up and had an actual plot one could follow after the 50% mark。 overall, it was a very easy read。the protagonist nina is rather one-dimensional and I did not like her a lot nor her narration。 no character was truly remarkable。 I felt like nothing was being descri it’s very hard to describe my feelings for this book。 the only interesting thing here: the setting。 paris set in 1828, the political situation sets a promising background, but almost everything else failed in execution。 I found it picked up and had an actual plot one could follow after the 50% mark。 overall, it was a very easy read。the protagonist nina is rather one-dimensional and I did not like her a lot nor her narration。 no character was truly remarkable。 I felt like nothing was being described well enough。 and the pacing was just so off… close to the beginning there was a three year time jump that took me some time to even understand, and then close to the end another time jump that is also only vaguely explained。 the plot and world building were very thin, and I have some real questions about the courts。every time a book gets pitched as “for fans of six of crows” I sadly get my hopes up for almost nothing。 and yet, somehow the end and whole revolutionary aspect and the character’s goals still caught my interest and if there’s a sequel I’m contemplating picking it up。 。。。more

This is a realistic historical fantasy。 It appeared to be totally absorbing and somber, intriguing, unexpected and scary in the same time。 I reccomend to get acquainted with this book for those who do not seek for love and romance, but want a thrilling and suspense story。 5 of 5。

I actually quite enjoyed this book。 This is the first time I actually liked the female MC, so I’m really satisfied with it。 I ship Nina with literally every person in the book, and she’s the definition of a badass female lead—not one of those ones like SJM books(nothing against her, but the female in her books are annoying)。 So yes, pretty good, but if you do not know anything about French then there is a few French words in there, just so you know。
