This sweet picture book will inspire students to let going of being perfect and, instead, strive for perfect-"ish。" I might use this book as part of a unit on identity。 It could encourage a conversation about how we often are defined, define others, or define ourselves by our talents and how that can be limiting。 Students will understand that they can call themselves artists, scientists, readers, explorers, etc。 even if it doesn't look exactly how they imagine it should。*Connect also to reading This sweet picture book will inspire students to let going of being perfect and, instead, strive for perfect-"ish。" I might use this book as part of a unit on identity。 It could encourage a conversation about how we often are defined, define others, or define ourselves by our talents and how that can be limiting。 Students will understand that they can call themselves artists, scientists, readers, explorers, etc。 even if it doesn't look exactly how they imagine it should。*Connect also to reading identity and what it means to be a reader。 。。。more

Cute book about a boy learning to draw in his own style rather than the “right” way。

I love how this inspire all of us to be passionate and not focus on perfection! I try to read this to my students whenever they feel like they aren’t good enough or have hit a wall。 Highly recommend it as both a children’s book and as a cute pep talk for adults。

Michelle

Recommend to art teachers or students hesitant to try new things or are perfectionists。

Decent read about being creative without being perfect。 Main character is a white boy。

sweetest little picture book all about finding the artist within us all。 such a simple, yet important message。 art, or any expression of creativity, is not about perfection。 it’s not about popularity or others’ opinions。 its not about making money or even making others smile! it’s about how YOU, the artist views it。 everyone is an artist, you need only try。

Good message about how what we say carries weight and we can use it to build people or family members up or tear them down。

I read Ish with my third grade students。 We talked about how you feel when someone appreciates your work。 They all really liked the story, and it inspired them in their own art。

Continuously surprised with Reynolds’s ability to tell so much in a simple story! Ramon loves to draw。。。。until his older brother makes fun of his artwork。 Not until his little sister surprises him with how much she loves is artwork that may not look exactly what he draws。。。。but like-ish。。。does he realize he can still enjoy his passion!

Cyril

Creative and inspiring。

I loved it。 My suspicion is that it might not translate as well to some more concrete thinking younger readers, but I don’t know that yet。 (Haven’t read to anyone, just myself。) didn’t know this was the same author as “The Dot” (a true masterpiece!) but it makes sense now。 Solid picture book。 Great for all ages, I think。

We love all the Peter Reynolds books。 Such great messages。

This is a wonderful book。 Full of encouragement and the wisdom of knowing that we are all painters of our own worlds。 This book is a testament to persevering in spite of nay-sayers and doubters and to knowing that their negativity does not have to be your truth。

Well, this is a story about a situation like that。 Ramon loves to draw and he draws everywhere。。。literally everywhere :)Until one day his older says that what Ramon is drawing is not good。。。Heartbreaking moment, when Ramon starts to doubt his craft, his drawing, his energy, his fantasy, his life and his everything。。。 He draws more and more and more but nothing is good enough。。till his little sister shows him what his art is meaning to her。Rest is the simple Have you ever had your dreams crushed? Drawing, art, this shows me it is all good! Plus the power of a mean comment, the power of a simple act of kindness。 Love this book!

Genre: Contemporary RealisticGrade: 1-3I completely related to this book and sometimes getting discouraged while working on a creative project。 It has such a good message of doing your best and being proud of the work that you create whether you are drawing or writing or doing something else。 He also provides us with a great reminder to be aware of the words that we use, especially when talking about something someone has created。 Overall, it was a great and inspiring story。

The art work was the thing that made me pick up this book。 Its simple but striking。 Its an amazing story about how everything isn't perfect and that's okay。 Art is what you feel and not what anyone else thinks。 The art work was the thing that made me pick up this book。 Its simple but striking。 Its an amazing story about how everything isn't perfect and that's okay。 Art is what you feel and not what anyone else thinks。 。。。more

This book shows that even when the world puts you down you need to get back up and be proud of what you’ve done。 It may not be perfect in everyone’s eyes but as long as it’s perfect in your that’s all that matters。 Even then some people may see the beauty in it to and those are the people you listen to。

Another inspiring book from the author。 Really left me ponder either I live of my own's expectation or other's expectation? Lesson:Do not let other people's words to waver your principles and beliefs。 Another inspiring book from the author。 Really left me ponder either I live of my own's expectation or other's expectation? This book is precious! It reminds me of Niko Draws a Feeling。 Ish follows the story of Ramon, a boy who loves to draw and his older brother taunts him that his pictures are not exact。 His sister then saves his pictures because she loves them。 This book encourages creativity in students and that their art may not be perfect。 Ish would be a great read aloud for students in kindergarten through second grade。

Yes! This one captures what it's like to love doing something。 And how easy it can be discouraged。 And maybe encouraged。 There is just a beauty and flow to this simple story。 And siblings being siblings。 Both simple and complicated。 And probably works just fine reading it aloud。 Yes!
