Summary

A striking, powerful, and moving love story following an ambitious lawyer who experiences an astonishing vision that could change her life forever。

Where do you see yourself in five years?

When Type-A Manhattan lawyer Dannie Kohan is asked this question at the most important interview of her career, she has a meticulously crafted answer at the ready。 Later, after nailing her interview and accepting her boyfriend’s marriage proposal, Dannie goes to sleep knowing she is right on track to achieve her five-year plan。

But when she wakes up, she’s suddenly in a different apartment, with a different ring on her finger, and beside a very different man。 The television news is on in the background, and she can just make out the scrolling date。 It’s the same night—December 15—but 2025, five years in the future。

After a very intense, shocking hour, Dannie wakes again, at the brink of midnight, back in 2020。 She can’t shake what has happened。 It certainly felt much more than merely a dream, but she isn’t the kind of person who believes in visions。 That nonsense is only charming coming from free-spirited types, like her lifelong best friend, Bella。 Determined to ignore the odd experience, she files it away in the back of her mind。

That is, until four-and-a-half years later, when by chance Dannie meets the very same man from her long-ago vision。

Brimming with joy and heartbreak, In Five Years is an unforgettable love story that reminds us of the power of loyalty, friendship, and the unpredictable nature of destiny。

When I picked up this book I was attracted to it immediately。 The promise of a light-hearted, romantic, chick lit novel, which as a bonus, is set in New York。The book hooked me from the start。 Its main character is Dannie, who is a recently engaged, successful lawyer。 Dannie falls asleep and when she ‘wakes’, she is in an apartment she doesn’t recognise, with a man she doesn’t know and a ring on her finger that isn’t hers。 The news is on the tv and it’s the same date, but five years later (2025) When I picked up this book I was attracted to it immediately。 The promise of a light-hearted, romantic, chick lit novel, which as a bonus, is set in New York。The book hooked me from the start。 Its main character is Dannie, who is a recently engaged, successful lawyer。 Dannie falls asleep and when she ‘wakes’, she is in an apartment she doesn’t recognise, with a man she doesn’t know and a ring on her finger that isn’t hers。 The news is on the tv and it’s the same date, but five years later (2025)。 When Dannie actually wakes, life is back to normal and she dismisses it all as a dream。 That is until by chance, Dannie meets the man of her vision four and half years later。From this point forwards in the book, I found myself constantly analysing the storyline and imagining multiple scenarios for its ending。 I even likened the plot to the film ‘The Family Man’ where Nicolas Cage gets a glimpse of a life he could have had if he had chosen a different path as his younger self。 Being a fan of this film, I was excited to finish the book with the hope of a similar ending。 As I do not want my review to include spoilers, all I will say is that I was left very disappointed and somewhat confused。 I was also a little distressed about the plot which come totally out of left-field。 Without revealing the topic, I would not have read this book if I had known upfront。 Ultimately, the book wasn’t quite as advertised。 It is chick lit for sure, as well as emotional and moving but if you are looking for an upbeat romance, then this is certainly not the book for you。 As such, my three star rating is based on my continued mixed feelings about this book。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Huh。 I honestly don’t know。 The book is kinda slow and it’s rrrreally dragging and slow throughout the whole book ( basically nothing happens)。 However, it is a good book。 I love Bella as a character and Aaron as well。 But I personally didn’t like it as much as I thought I would。 Also, when Dani and Aaron hook up at the end, it just felt kinda forced。 The whole premise of the story, the twist, the concept of the book, it was just so anticlimactic and unsatisfying。 It was like “oh I just read thi Huh。 I honestly don’t know。 The book is kinda slow and it’s rrrreally dragging and slow throughout the whole book ( basically nothing happens)。 However, it is a good book。 I love Bella as a character and Aaron as well。 But I personally didn’t like it as much as I thought I would。 Also, when Dani and Aaron hook up at the end, it just felt kinda forced。 The whole premise of the story, the twist, the concept of the book, it was just so anticlimactic and unsatisfying。 It was like “oh I just read this whole book and that’s what how they got to that point?”。 Which was another reason why I disliked this book。 。。。more

It reads easily and keeps the reader interested, it was a good book for taking a break from long fantasy books I usually read。 At some point in the book I assumed how it was going to end but that didn't diminish the reading experience at all。 It reads easily and keeps the reader interested, it was a good book for taking a break from long fantasy books I usually read。 At some point in the book I assumed how it was going to end but that didn't diminish the reading experience at all。 。。。more

Went into the book expecting nothing more than a cheesy romance (which I was okay with) and I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the book。 Dannie’s journey through love and loss is done very well in a heartwarming and equally heart wrenching way。 The beginning of the book had you suspecting that you can guess the entire plot, but as I went along I was caught off guard many times and the ending was not how I imagined it, but in a good way。 The ending also left me sobbing in my bedroom at 1a Went into the book expecting nothing more than a cheesy romance (which I was okay with) and I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the book。 Dannie’s journey through love and loss is done very well in a heartwarming and equally heart wrenching way。 The beginning of the book had you suspecting that you can guess the entire plot, but as I went along I was caught off guard many times and the ending was not how I imagined it, but in a good way。 The ending also left me sobbing in my bedroom at 1am so be prepared for that。 All in all it was a fast and easy read that will hit you in the feels and I really couldn’t ask more of it。 。。。more

Another quick and easy read。 I wasn't a fan of all the details of New York or the brand name dropping of stores and clothes。 A lot of thatv stuff distracted from the plot line。 I also don't like that it never explains how she saw into the future in the first place。 Kind of felt like a rushed concept。 Another quick and easy read。 I wasn't a fan of all the details of New York or the brand name dropping of stores and clothes。 A lot of thatv stuff distracted from the plot line。 I also don't like that it never explains how she saw into the future in the first place。 Kind of felt like a rushed concept。 。。。more

I enjoyed the interesting beginning, the unexpected ending and the build-up in the middle。The character development, likable or not, was well done! I picked up this book to move on from a terrible book I had just finished。 I read the whole thing in less than 5 hours。 It’s amazing。 Do yourself a favor and go read it now—see if you can beat my record。

This was an unexpectedly beautiful love story。 Some of the very specific name-dropping ("descriptions") detracted from the story, but those decrease in frequency eventually。 The relationships are endearing and feel very accurate。 Would make a fun choice for book club。 This was an unexpectedly beautiful love story。 Some of the very specific name-dropping ("descriptions") detracted from the story, but those decrease in frequency eventually。 The relationships are endearing and feel very accurate。 Would make a fun choice for book club。 。。。more

Very quick read。 The story was a bit cliché but I loved every second of it。

Not a literary masterpiece but this was the perfect antidote for me after my previous slog of a book! I was interested in the little mystery and the story was just the right length to keep me engaged and not draw it out for too long。A better ending than I expected which left me satisfied。

What a weird plot - and a weird ending - that has nothing to do with time travel。 Also the character development was definitely lacking。 Audiobook narrator was solid though。

In Five Years is a story about love, life, but above all never ending friendship。 The story starts at an important moment in Dannie's life but then quickly jumps her five years into the future and back again。 You start out thinking this is about romance and true love and in some ways it is but it is about so much more。 The story spins and weaves itself through Dannie's five years and shows us the things that make up our lives affect our future selves in so many ways。 We may not be who we are mea In Five Years is a story about love, life, but above all never ending friendship。 The story starts at an important moment in Dannie's life but then quickly jumps her five years into the future and back again。 You start out thinking this is about romance and true love and in some ways it is but it is about so much more。 The story spins and weaves itself through Dannie's five years and shows us the things that make up our lives affect our future selves in so many ways。 We may not be who we are meant to be or where we are meant to be and each decision we make can change what we always thought we knew。 It was a touching story with a few surprises that I didn't expect。 I completely enjoyed it and finished it quickly。 I will definitely check out more from this author。 。。。more

It's a quick heartbreaking story。。 I loved the friendship portrayed in the book as i find myself relating to have such a deep connection with my besy friend, this book definitely brought tears to my eyes, it's one of those stories you feel like the characters moved on easily afterwards but actually they will forever live in grief。 It's a quick heartbreaking story。。 I loved the friendship portrayed in the book as i find myself relating to have such a deep connection with my besy friend, this book definitely brought tears to my eyes, it's one of those stories you feel like the characters moved on easily afterwards but actually they will forever live in grief。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Wait did I miss something? What was the deal with the beach house and blue awning that Bella remembers but Danny thinks Bella has never been there? Also, she calls him Aaron so much at the beginning and no one says anything for awhile (when Bella finds out she’s pregnant and then Danny asks if she has told AARON) and then he starts referring to himself as Aaron even though he goes by Greg?

2 stars。I had higher hopes for this one。 I read another of the author's books, The Dinner List, and wasn't blown away, but figured all books are different。 Right? Well, in this case, these books actually seem to be quite similar。。。in that they're both written around a 'what-if' premise。 (Which five people, dead or alive, would you invite to your party? I loved this read! I went through it so fast; I love Rebecca Serle's writing style。 It seems like most people were upset that this wasn't a love story per say, but I really enjoyed reading about their relationships。 Every guess of where I thought it was going was quickly proven wrong, which I liked。 I do think it was super strange to try to fit in the faux-attraction between Dannie and Aaron。 There was NO indication from Bella that she would EVER be okay with this; it was so, so, so wrong。 It ma I loved this read! She was pretty one-dimensional。Overall, I would recommend。 I love books with complicated relationships。 。。。more

I like Serle’s imaginative premise of waking up in 5 years to a singular moment and “how is this my life in 5 years?”, but I’m not sure I liked how she got there in the end。 Cancer is the heaviest storyline in this book。 And the moment the main character wakes up to ends up being literally a SINGULAR MOMENT that ends up meaning nothing once we finally get to that point。I had also given 3 stars to The Dinner List by Serle。 I think she’s got great ideas, but the execution can use some more depth a I like Serle’s imaginative premise of waking up in 5 years to a singular moment and “how is this my life in 5 years?”, but I’m not sure I liked how she got there in the end。 Cancer is the heaviest storyline in this book。 And the moment the main character wakes up to ends up being literally a SINGULAR MOMENT that ends up meaning nothing once we finally get to that point。I had also given 3 stars to The Dinner List by Serle。 I think she’s got great ideas, but the execution can use some more depth and less cheap cop outs。 I listened to the audiobook which definitely made the experience though。 。。。more

I see all the hate comments because it isn’t a romance and surreal life read。 To be frank, I loved the book for that。 I liked it was real and deeply raw at times。 I liked the writing style too。 The characters were well developed and I felt like I knew each one personally。 I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns the book takes you on。 Again, not a normal, predictable read。 The only thing I did NOT enjoy was the sexual content but that is just not my style。 It was easy to skip over though, so pl I see all the hate comments because it isn’t a romance and surreal life read。 To be frank, I loved the book for that。 I liked it was real and deeply raw at times。 I liked the writing style too。 The characters were well developed and I felt like I knew each one personally。 I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns the book takes you on。 Again, not a normal, predictable read。 The only thing I did NOT enjoy was the sexual content but that is just not my style。 It was easy to skip over though, so please don’t let that alone hold you back from reading。 。。。more

I would give it 3。5。 I didn't always love the delivery, but it's an engrossing read。 I also think there should be more platonic love stories out there, so I appreciate In Five Years for showing how deep and meaningful friendships can be。 I would give it 3。5。 I didn't always love the delivery, but it's an engrossing read。 I also think there should be more platonic love stories out there, so I appreciate In Five Years for showing how deep and meaningful friendships can be。 。。。more
