Summary

He is Guts, the Black Swordsman, a warrior of legendary prowess — relentless, fearless, merciless。 As cold and brutal as the iron of the massive sword he wields。 Bent on revenge against the unholy forces that have branded him for sacrifice, but especially on Griffith, one of the demon lords of the Godhand。 But Griffith was once a man, the leader of the Hawks, a renowned cadre of elite fighters with a young Guts as its fiercest champion。 Though forged in a crucible of cruelty and violence, nothing could prepare Guts for a confrontation with Nosferatu Zodd, a superhuman beast who slaughters Guts’ comrades as easily as a scythe cuts wheat。 Even Guts and Griffith are no match for the abomination’s power。。。but something Griffith wears around his neck may well be!

(Zero spoiler review)Ahhh, now were talking。 If you read my review of Berserk volume 1, you would know that I wasn't completely enamoured with the opening to this long running salvo of Guts and gore。 Although, as I hinted at in that review, things are quickly set on a firmer course at the outset of this second weighty tome。 All the meandering and haphazard storytelling hones itself to a finer point, and we begin to get an insight into what is really going on in this world。 Hallelujah, praise the (Zero spoiler review)Ahhh, now were talking。 If you read my review of Berserk volume 1, you would know that I wasn't completely enamoured with the opening to this long running salvo of Guts and gore。 Although, as I hinted at in that review, things are quickly set on a firmer course at the outset of this second weighty tome。 All the meandering and haphazard storytelling hones itself to a finer point, and we begin to get an insight into what is really going on in this world。 Hallelujah, praise the demon lord。 In fact, I was quite surprised with how quickly Miura was able to turn it around, having me go from tedium and disappointed to wide eyed engagement with the turning of a few pages。 It is as if he had a good long hard look in the mirror in between finishing the third tonkabon (deluxe volumes contain 3 tonkabon's) and starting the fourth。 Deciding that it was tie to quite screwing around and really get this mother sucker punching above its weight。 Well, Mr。 Miura, you clearly got your act together, much to my relief, and Berserk volume 2 contains a lot more of what I like, and a lot less of what I don't namely Puck and the rather boring, protracted fight scenes。 Sure, they are still present to a certain degree, but they are far more reigned in。 Miura's art has also lifted to the next level, with some of the panels being so jaw droppingly gorgeous, that you will find your eyes lingering on them, despite you desperately wanting to see what's on the next page。 His quality control seems much tighter in general, with few if any panels being clearly sub standard efforts。Writing, that funny thing books usually contain, makes an appearance here too, with my favourite moments being the small character moments between the big set piece battles。 And whilst I wasn't a fan of the furthest arc of the 'flashback' (doing my best not to impart any information) as the story progresses more and more, so to did my interest and enjoyment grow once more。No, this is still far from a perfect book。 Maybe the normative components of Japanese storytelling will keep me from ever truly loving a title as much as the more lauded of the Western comics。 It is often the books very manga-ness which for me personally, holds it back just that bit too much from verging into near masterpiece territory。 Alas, this is only volume 2, and there is a long, long way to go。 I can still heartily recommend it though。 4/5OmniBen。 。。。more

The dynamic between Guts, Griffith, and Casca is what drives this series。 It is so fascinating and enthralling。 They are all great characters。 I swear I'll explode if Berserk is never finished。 Miura, please。 The dynamic between Guts, Griffith, and Casca is what drives this series。 It is so fascinating and enthralling。 They are all great characters。 I swear I'll explode if Berserk is never finished。 Miura, please。 。。。more

Miura's artwork is really improving with each volume, and in this Kindle addition, the quality of the scan is improving as well。 There are still some kanji that are difficult to read due to low resolution, but much better than volume 1。 Miura's artwork is really improving with each volume, and in this Kindle addition, the quality of the scan is improving as well。 There are still some kanji that are difficult to read due to low resolution, but much better than volume 1。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 3 years have passed and Guts is now a respected captain with the Band of the Hawk。 Tensions rise between him and Casca, while Griffith seems to pull away from the group。 Their travels lead them across the path of Nosferatu Zodd, a warrior of monstrous proportions。 After a vicious fight against Guts and Griffith, Zodd heeds the former a warning about the behelit around Griffith’s neck。 Perhaps Griffith isn’t to be trusted。。。

I'm starting to get used to these story arcs that don't line up with the volumes; always a cliffhanger or kickoff to a new story arc! This one drops a lot of plot hints, but answers very few questions。 But is it violent? In a nutshell, Guts cuts even more people in half, finally we see tie-ins to the beginning of the manga with Griffith revealing he has a behelit, and Miura simply will not draw pensises even though he keeps drawing fully nude men。

Nosferatu zodd。 I never thought I would see a vampire and superman reference in one book。。。。 But hey。。。。 Weirder things have happened。

I'm sure you can find it here。 The place you belong。 Not for nothing but this series came to me at the perfect time, it's almost too eerie。 I already cried a bunch because it's too relatable at some points。 I'm sure you can find it here。 The place you belong。 Not for nothing but this series came to me at the perfect time, it's almost too eerie。 I already cried a bunch because it's too relatable at some points。 。。。more

My all time (and only) anime/magna continues。 This particular part of the story in the late 90's anime I felt like was a bit confusing and cut short。 It didn't make much sense when I was younger at the time。 The magna really does a nice job of laying this out and providing all the missing pieces。 I feel like as well, the particular highlight of this volume (Zodd) was pretty much in and out with very little depth in the anime。 I am hoping that through the 30+ volumes of the magna that he shows up My all time (and only) anime/magna continues。 This particular part of the story in the late 90's anime I felt like was a bit confusing and cut short。 It didn't make much sense when I was younger at the time。 The magna really does a nice job of laying this out and providing all the missing pieces。 I feel like as well, the particular highlight of this volume (Zodd) was pretty much in and out with very little depth in the anime。 I am hoping that through the 30+ volumes of the magna that he shows up more often and more backstory about him is present。 Given what is within this, I am sure that will be the case。 。。。more

The first couple of Berserk volumes seemed to jump around in time, crafting an established Guts with wide renown, before taking us to kid Guts and starting to tell a story that has some semblance of chronological sense。This solid chronology is good—and represents, I think, the core of what most people think of when they think Berserk—but I also feel like I was given a glimmer of Guts's final form at the outset, a final form that I kind of prefer to this belated attempt to build up Guts and his h The first couple of Berserk volumes seemed to jump around in time, crafting an established Guts with wide renown, before taking us to kid Guts and starting to tell a story that has some semblance of chronological sense。This solid chronology is good—and represents, I think, the core of what most people think of when they think Berserk—but I also feel like I was given a glimmer of Guts's final form at the outset, a final form that I kind of prefer to this belated attempt to build up Guts and his history。 Maybe part of it is the vaguely spoilery nature of some of those earlier Berserk stories, where we see Griffith as a Bad Guy; now, in his current place in the chronology, he's a friend, a mentor。 But as readers can we really see Griffith that way, knowing he becomes an antagonist? Of course not。 That foreshadow crafts our opinion and perspective of Griffith。I'll be curious to see how the manga bridges the gap from where we are now to the Guts and Griffith we saw early in the series。 If that is handled well (and, hopefully, not stretched out too long) I'll probably end up pretty forgiving of the way these stories are sequenced。 But for now I feel like author Kentaro Miura kicked the legs out of his arc before it even started。(Still a solid 4 stars, though。) 。。。more

The Golden Age ArcA fantasticly rich, beautiful and tragic story, with some of the most amazingly written plot I can think of。 Berserk starts out with a brooding, dark avenger, with little personality left。 What get most people hooked to the story at this point, is the gore, the violence, the "I don't give a F" attitude。 If you have gotten this far, then you should know that it will change and be explained。 You will get to know why Guts is the way he is。 The story of the struggler is explained。 The Golden Age ArcA fantasticly rich, beautiful and tragic story, with some of the most amazingly written plot I can think of。 Berserk starts out with a brooding, dark avenger, with little personality left。 What get most people hooked to the story at this point, is the gore, the violence, the "I don't give a F" attitude。 If you have gotten this far, then you should know that it will change and be explained。 You will get to know why Guts is the way he is。 The story of the struggler is explained。 The 4th volume starts "The Golden Age Arc", which is so immensely good, I find it hard to describe。 The story focuses on Guts' past。 How he came to become such a badass, what his childhood was like and how he met his first, and only, friends。 It is the story of comrades, success and failures。 It is the story about hope, despair, ambition and betrayal。 The first volumes of this tale, tell us about a anti-hero。 He doesn't want to be liked and he doesn't care about life。 He lives only for revenge and hatred, and has for years。 The Golden Age Arc gives us the reasons for this。 The death and betrayal that started Guts' life and how death has followed him from he was born。He starts of with a mentor, a father and people he trusts。 He ends up alone and untrusting。 He learns to trust, learns to be a human only to experience true despair, sorrow and hatred。I envy everyone who hasn't read Berserk yet。 The whole story is such a blast that the agony of the slow releases are almost bearable。 If this is your first time reading the Golden Arc, then you will probably be blown away。 Or not。 You will probably end up reading it multiple times, and finding joy and despair all over again。 。。。more
