Summary

Can you be a hero。。。if society doesn't see you as a person?

Nubia has always been a little bit。。。different。 As a baby she showcased Amazonian-like strength by pushing over a tree to rescue her neighbor's cat。 But, despite having similar abilities, the world has no problem telling her that she's no Wonder Woman。 And even if she was, they wouldn't want her。 Every time she comes to the rescue, she's reminded of how people see her; as a threat。 Her moms do their best to keep her safe, but Nubia can't deny the fire within her, even if she's a little awkward about it sometimes。 Even if it means people assume the worst。

When Nubia's best friend, Quisha, is threatened by a boy who thinks he owns the town, Nubia will risk it all--her safety, her home, and her crush on that cute kid in English class--to become the hero society tells her she isn't。

From the witty and powerful voice behind A Blade So Black and with endearing and expressive art by Robyn Smith, comes a vital story for today about equality, identity and kicking it with your squad。

This is a really important and timely story。 All little girls should be able to see themselves as a superhero。 The art and colouring are just divine。

YAS! Dear Nubia, I managed a comic book store for 2 years about 10 years ago。 I read lots of DC。 I never heard of you。 I'm so, so sorry for not knowing you sooner! Or will they try to gun her down just like they gunned down the black boy from her neighborhood? Will anyone believe a strong black woman just wants to help? I loved this book。 Nubia felt like a real teenager, coping with everyday teenage things (crushes, jerks at school, secrets from friends), while also dealing with the extremely heavy, and at times life threatening, realities of American racism as a Black girl with super powers。 I appreciated the diverse perspectives we got to see on how to approach that reality from Nubia’s Moms, her friends, and the brief Wonder Woman cameo。 The characters spoke like students I’ve had, and felt true to life。 Add I loved this book。 Nubia felt like a real teenager, coping with everyday teenage things (crushes, jerks at school, secrets from friends), while also dealing with the extremely heavy, and at times life threatening, realities of American racism as a Black girl with super powers。 I appreciated the diverse perspectives we got to see on how to approach that reality from Nubia’s Moms, her friends, and the brief Wonder Woman cameo。 The characters spoke like students I’ve had, and felt true to life。 Additionally, the art was delightfully unique and full of character。I rated 4 stars instead of 5, because the escalation of the conflict felt a bit rushed for me, which left me feeling like Nubia’s development was a tad hasty as well。 Overall though, it is a poignant and engaging read。 。。。more

What a wonderful special! I'll admit, I had never heard of Nubia before - I've only gotten into comics relatively recently, and that's mostly on the Marvel side。 But this was great。 I really enjoyed the writing; the author did a great job of really painting the range of emotions of the characters, especially the teenagers。 What a wonderful special! Wow! This is such an incredible graphic novel that deals with some heavy but relevant topics, such as toxic masculinity, homophobia, entitlement, class privilege, police brutality, gun violence, bullying, and racism。 Nubia Johnson is a Black teenage girl with superpowers living in a society where being Black is a death sentence。 Her character helps us see the difficulties of trying to navigate in a broken world that assumes the worst of you。 Despite, the racism, sexism, and discrimination she en Wow! What a fantastic graphic novel!! I loved it! The story, the characters, the color scheme are great and the heroine is sublime。 The friendship Nubia, Quisha and Jason feels so genuine and true。 A little action, some heroics and a touch of romance surround the very real issues threaded throughout the story。 It’s a great synthesis of classic coming of age hero tropes and modern society。 I wholeheartedly recommend this!

Such an incredibly important piece of fiction for our modern day and age, especially one that speaks true to the experience of Black and POC in America, and throughout the world at the hands of racism, police brutality and violence。Simply incredible。 Truly。 Everyone needs to read this。

SO glad I finished this graphic novel, it is everything I hoped it would be and then some。 The way that it addresses social justice and white entitlement is incredibly well done, and it makes me so so so happy to see Nubia in the DC canon。 This graphic novel feels like the antithesis of Marvel’s ill-conceived “New Warriors” Screentime, Snowflake, and Safe Space (I wish I was making this up: https://www。marvel。com/articles/comic。。。) While the Marvel characters feel like a weird April fool’s joke SO glad I finished this graphic novel, it is everything I hoped it would be and then some。 The way that it addresses social justice and white entitlement is incredibly well done, and it makes me so so so happy to see Nubia in the DC canon。 This graphic novel feels like the antithesis of Marvel’s ill-conceived “New Warriors” Screentime, Snowflake, and Safe Space (I wish I was making this up: https://www。marvel。com/articles/comic。。。) While the Marvel characters feel like a weird April fool’s joke or something written by people who are incredibly out of touch, Nubia feels real, and her struggles as a teen, as a hero, as a young black person in America, are all handled so expertly all graphic novelists should be taking note。 。。。more

I really loved the main character (truly a lovely 3D girl), her relationship with her moms, and the friendship dynamics。 The perception people have of Nubia lends well to her being a superhero and I liked learning the backstory。 I loved the coloring especially, so shouts to Brie Henderson (colorists deserve more credit!)。 The ending was too neatly wrapped up in my opinion and the “big bad” was maybe too on the nose。 There are triggers here for sexual harassment, racism/racist comments, extrajudi I really loved the main character (truly a lovely 3D girl), her relationship with her moms, and the friendship dynamics。 The perception people have of Nubia lends well to her being a superhero and I liked learning the backstory。 I loved the coloring especially, so shouts to Brie Henderson (colorists deserve more credit!)。 The ending was too neatly wrapped up in my opinion and the “big bad” was maybe too on the nose。 There are triggers here for sexual harassment, racism/racist comments, extrajudicial killings, and gun violence/school shooting。 。。。more
